[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2024560] Re: Check if 0010-set-language needs to be update for the new languages property

2023-06-24 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I did some tests and identified a problem. If I use language-selector-
gnome to change from English (US) to Swedish, it looks like this:

$ sudo cat /var/lib/AccountsService/users/gunnar | grep Lang
Languages=sv:en_US:en;

Next:
* Relogin
* Open g-c-c from terminal and switch to Region & Language

Then you see this error message:

00:59:54.0364 **[11007]: WARNING: Couldn't get locale for
language: sv:en_US:en
00:59:54.0366 GnomeDesktop[11007]:CRITICAL:
gnome_get_language_from_locale: assertion '*locale != '\0'' failed

This can be dealt with in different ways, but for now I think it's
better to change 0010-set-language.patch so it does not write the colon
separated language list into the accountsservice keyfile. That way the
language selector in lightdm-gtk-greeter keeps working as well.

So I have uploaded a change, which also allowed me to drop language-not-
xpg.patch.

Not sure if the upstream project is at all useful for us. In any case I
kind of fear the it will cause more issues...

I've rebased 0010-set-language to apply correctly but we should review
if we need to adapt the patch to apply a similar logic to the new
languages property that it's doing for old language one

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2007652] Re: [snap] PWA don't launch as applications, just another chromium window

2023-06-24 Thread zwn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1732482 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1732482

I am aware of the problem with desktop files & snaps. Therefore I am
launching the installed app directly from Chromium page available at
chrome://apps to circumvent the problem (of not being able to pick up
the desktop file). That makes me believe that this is not a duplicate of
the linked bug since desktop files are not part of the reproducible test
case.

[snap] PWA don't launch as applications, just another chromium window

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have recently converted from deb to snap package of chromium and
progressive web applications (PWAs) launch just as another window of
chromium and are not recognized as separate application by the window
manager (for example when switching using Super+Tab) or dock (grouped
  under chromium windows).

This is either a regression of the snap package vs deb or ubuntu 20.04
vs ubuntu 18.04 (I am not able to differentiate between these two
  since both happened together).

Bug description:
I have two screen, side by side, with IDs (2) and (3) ; physically and
within GNOME Control Center, the setup is as is:

   [ (3) ][ (2) ]

The Screen with identifier (2) is defined as the main screen.

My multiscreen setup in GNOME Control Center is:
   - Fixed number of workspace (12)
   - Workspaces only on main screen

The issue is that whenever I move from one workspace to the other
(using keyboard shortcuts CTRL+ALT+(<-|->), the system gives focus to
the secondary screen, identifier (3) above.

This is really super painful on a day-to-day basis because I spend
half of my time fixing the focus and/or inputing in the wrong window.
It already made me loose valuable work because of a CTRL+C in the
  wrong window.

As much as I can recall, this was not the behavior in previous releases.

We are testing gnome-shell 42.9 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS now. Therefore, I
am marking this a duplicate of the tracking bug for that update.

Title:
Last LTS version of ubuntu use a deprecated gnome version with crashes
  and known performance issues

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Sometimes gnome becomes too slow and consumes too much CPU, during the
day sometimes it runs very smoothly and suddenly it gets extremely
slow and the cpu consumption gets too high.

I have notified the Gnome development team of this, providing all
possible evidence, but they have told me that my system uses an
outdated and unsupported version of Gnome:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/6788

It is the version that comes by default in the latest updated version
  of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Why is Ubuntu using an outdated version that has known performance
issues?, how can I fix the problem I'm currently having with my
  system?

  The main problem:

  Enviroment:

  whk@whk-MS-7D53:~$ lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
  Release: 22.04
  Codename: jammy
  whk@whk-MS-7D53:~$ gnome-shell --version
  GNOME Shell 42.5

I don't use third party extensions in gnome shell, the problem is observed in
xorg and in wayland.
  My hardware:

  - CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
  - RAM: 128 GB 3200Mhz.
  - Disk: WD BLACK 2TB SN770 NVMe.
  - Motherboard: MSI MPG X570S Edge.
  - GPU: XFX Speedster MERC319 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT.

Sometimes gnome becomes too slow and consumes too much CPU, during the day
sometimes it runs very smoothly and suddenly it gets extremely slow and the cpu
consumption gets too high, the dock barely responds, the windows move very
slowly, but at the same time I can open a new generation game and run
excellently at 60fps (need for speed heat over steam), so I doubt it's a
graphic driver problem.
I don't know why this happens, it happens randomly during the course of the
day. I've checked the computer logs but currently I don't see anything relevant.

Some time ago I raised a similar problem:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/tracker/-/issues/342 , i still have the
same symptoms but without the log messages in rsyslog.

I have created a video reproducing this problem:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRhgkfbu4AI
  Some points to consider:

  - I don't use gnome shell extensions.
  - Gnome software and Snap store are uninstalled so the consumption issue
doesn't go that way.
  - All my apps are closed, I don't have any personal apps open in the
background.
  - The open directory has no files so I rule out that it could be a high load
due to content rendering.
  - Disk usage is low so there are no IO blocks.
  - The whole gnome environment gets slow, not just the windows, but also the
context menu display, side dock navigation and top menu display when trying to
shut down the computer, but the content of the other applications is very fast,
so I don't think it's a general problem with the equipment or hardware,
otherwise the other applications would have a very bad performance, but it's
not like that. I think the problem is caused solely by gnome, but I don't know
how to diagnose this.

If you need more information or to run some kind of diagnostic, let me
  know.

While booting I expect to see the graphical splash without errors.

When I boot Ubuntu I get two errors from grub telling that no server has
been specified and no suitable video mode found. Although I have edited
the grub file and added the resolution of my monitor there. As of now I
have turned grub boot into text only and the errors went away but the
boot process is still minus a graphical splash.

  GSmartControl & NVME drive

Status in udisks2 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 18.04.5 (Linux Mint 19.3)
  gsmartcontrol 1.1.3-1, amd64

I see that GSmartControl cannot work with NVME (SSD disk) correctly. I
test with WD SN550 - 1TB, blue NVME drive.

  Problem:
gsmartcontrol list my drive as /dev/nvme0n1. That is OK, but there is parent
drive (/dev/nvme0) and that is not listed. /dev/nvme0 has some important
information related to SMART, including value of TBW.

Other issue is that gsmartcontrol cannot identify NVME disk, it list
  it as "Unknown model".

I dump here output from GSmartControl and after that dump from tool
  smartctl.
