[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028469] Re: Use less generic name for monitors.xml to avoid clashing with other desktops

Assuming that didn't break any of them.

monitors.xml generated by GNOME is incompatible with monitors.xml
generated by MATE (see file layouts in the top post), which is indicated
in the title of this issue.

Title:
  Use less generic name for monitors.xml to avoid clashing with other
  desktops

Status in Mutter:
  Unknown
Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
   Expected behaviour
  cinnamon is using a dedicated name, cinnamon-monitors.xml. This doesn't cause
the file to be overwritten by the display preferences if other desktop
environment are used on the same distro. If MATE and GNOME followed the same
approach, the file name would be mate-monitors.xml, and gnome-monitors.xml,
respectively.

   Actual behaviour
  GNOME's monitors.xml:

  ```
    0
    0
    yes
    Virtual-1
    ???
    unknown
    1600
    900
    60
  ```
  MATE's monitors.xml:
  ```
    no
    ???
    0x
    0x
    1600
    900
    60
    normal
    no
    no
    yes
  ```

   Steps to reproduce the behaviour
  Both GNOME and MATE can be installed on the same distro. Both DEs are
installing "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml" via manually configured display GUI
preferences:
  * GNOME via `$ gnome-control-center display`
  * MATE via `$ mate-display-properties`

  Steps I used to reproduce the issue in Ubuntu 22.04 (as a virtual machine):
  * Log into GNOME
  * Ubuntu comes with GNOME, so install MATE in addition: `sudo apt-get install
mate-desktop-environment-extras mate-desktop-environment`
  * Run `$ gnome-control-center display`, change the "Resolution" to 1600x900,
click on the "Apply": This will 1) generate "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml", 2)
[Screenshot_ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso-clone_2023-07-24_23_43_56](/uploads/dc4ba73ddfae955fcafa948e3a164581/Screenshot_ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso-clone_2023-07-24_23_43_56.png).
 Close the window.
  * Log out from GNOME. From the display manager, log into MATE.
  * As you can see, the [screen resolution (1600x900 configured in GNOME) not
used by
MATE](https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-control-center/assets/6416073/adffa08e-cf08-499d-8dc3-9e7800e4d7e9),
 instead a fallback resolution is used.
  * Run `$ mate-display-properties`, just click on the "Apply" button (you
don't have to click on the "Keep this configuration" button that pop-ups in the
dialoge-box), it will overwrite "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml"
  * Log out from MATE. From the display manager, log into GNOME.
  * As you can see,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028438] Re: gnome-control-center crash

2023-07-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

I've always thought the generic name is useful because it potentially

Regardless, this isn't the place to discuss such a change. The

2023-07-25 Thread Mike Ferreira
Further. When this originally happened, this was while checking a
strange occurrence of the laptop going into hibernation... When all
settings in the BIOS is set to not go to sleep... And everything in
dconf set not to go to sleep. I don't know if this is related, but... It
is still going to sleep.

And Settings will not start.

Bug description:
  OS version: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
  Firefox version: 1:1snap1-0ubuntu2 - 101.0.1 (64-bit)

  Sometimes when I adjust the size of a Firefox window, that window
  becomes messed up: the contents don't fill the window, not all the
  controls are visible, and clicks are offset, so if I click on one
  spot, the window behaves as if I clicked on a different spot (so it's
  impossible to use Firefox in that window anymore). I seem to remember
  being able to fix this by dragging and dropping the window onto a
  different monitor or workspace in the GNOME Activities view, but I'm
  currently experiencing the problem and that is not helping. I took a
  screenshot of what's currently going on (attached) which happened when
  I tried to maximize the window. This is on a laptop with an external
  monitor that I'm using in portrait mode, via a USB-C connection that's
  converted to HDMI. I had plugged in to the external monitor a few
  minutes before this happens, and plugging in or possibly unplugging
  seems to make this bug more likely. This is a relatively new problem,
  starting within the last few weeks. (Maybe after I switched to the
  snap version of Firefox? I guess that was when I upgraded from the
  previous LTS version of Ubuntu.)

  42.5-0ubuntu1 to 42.9-0ubuntu2, and I noticed that chrome no longer
  renders properly. Notice the missing image header on the Ubuntu
  website and the garbled right click menu here:

  https://i.imgur.com/BPnqfVG.png

  I downgraded gnome-shell and gnome-shell-common version to
  42.0-2ubuntu1, restarted gnome, and the rendering issues went away:

  https://i.imgur.com/CzEPgqY.png

  I upgraded gnome-shell and gnome-shell-common again to the latest and
  the rendering issues came back. Going to chrome://settings/system and
  disabling hardware acceleration fixes the rendering issues (but now I
  don't  have hardware acceleration).

  I'm running the latest stable version of chrome which was released a
  few weeks ago: 114.0.5735.198

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028469] Re: Use less generic name for monitors.xml to avoid clashing with other desktops

2023-07-25 Thread David Hedlund
** Description changed:

   Expected behaviour
  cinnamon is using a dedicated name, cinnamon-monitors.xml. This doesn't cause
the file to be overwritten by the display preferences if other desktop
environment are used on the same distro. If MATE and GNOME followed the same
approach, the file name would be mate-monitors.xml, and gnome-monitors.xml,
respectively.

   Actual behaviour
  GNOME's monitors.xml:

  ```
    0
    0
    yes
    Virtual-1
    ???
    0x
    unknown
    unknown
    1600
    900
    60
  ```
  MATE's monitors.xml:
  ```
    no
    ???
    0x
    0x
    1600
    900
    60
    0
    0
    normal
    no
    no
    yes
  ```

   Steps to reproduce the behaviour
  Both GNOME and MATE can be installed on the same distro. Both DEs are
installing "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml" via manually configured display GUI
preferences:
  * GNOME via `$ gnome-control-center display`
  * MATE via `$ mate-display-properties`

  The screen resolution is used directly (no need to log out). However,
  when you switch to the other desktop environment, the screen resolution
  is reset because their setup in monitors.xml is different.

+ * Log into GNOME
+ * Ubuntu comes with GNOME, so install MATE in addition: `sudo apt-get install
mate-desktop-environment-extras mate-desktop-environment`
+ * Run `$ gnome-control-center display`, change the "Resolution" to 1600x900,
click on the "Apply": This will 1) generate "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml", 2)

  (files) essentially unusable. It is notably sluggish to launch and
  browse in general. But most detrimental to the usability is this:

  The characters do not appear in real time as I type. When they do
  appear, they are sometimes jumbled or in reverse (consistently
  reproducible). As I type in the file search box, the circular cursor
  spins intermittently, then the UI catches up and it's not what I
  typed.

  For example, I just typed "umbrella" into the search box, and Nautilus
searched for:
  "umballer"

  Off-the-cuff test #2, searched for "Ubuntu" and I ended up with
  "Ubunut" ... you can't make this up. :-)

  Test #3, typed Launchpad, ended up with a search for "Laudaphcn".

  Keyboard input everywhere else on the system is otherwise normal and
  snappy.  No pun intended, really.

  FWIW Nautilus files preferences are as default (Search in subfolders,
  Show thumbnails, File count == This computer only).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028674] [NEW] Automatically switch profiles based on plugged-in status

2023-07-25 Thread kristbaum
Public bug reported:

As of now there is no option to switch power profiles automatically,
based on the status (plugged-in or not) of the device. It would be a
very useful feature, and would work around the requirement to create
user scripts and download gnome-extensions.

E.g:

It is advised to select the best business for the task and, more
crucially, high-quality supplies. Why use subpar materials when you can
select top names like Farrow and Ball, Dulux, Johnstone, or Sadolin? We
can only get the best effects if we use the proper

  reboot. Then if I open settings again and use appearance feature of

  references to this bug on Google. It is annoying to many Ubuntu users!

Bug description:
  A bug for the triage/patching of CVE-2022-37290.

  In get_basename() and g_file_get_basename(), when the file name cannot
  be parsed, NULL is returned; Nautilus does not check this and this
  results in a NPD and a crash.

  The issue on GNOME GitLab explains this pretty well:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/2376

  And the code in question is also in Nemo and Caja.

  History of the code: The faulty code was introduced in Nautilus 2.20,
  before Nemo and Caja were forked; these file managers have the same
  issue and same code in the function.

  The simplest POC I found was running this via DBus, which I'm not 100%
  sure if I've altered correctly for Nemo and Caja, but regardless for
  Nautilus this results in a crash.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2023776] Re: Ubuntu 23.04 + Gnome + Nvidia 525 + Vsync = low fps in Xorg sessions

2023-07-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry to hear you're still having problems.

Since the new issue has different symptoms on a different Ubuntu release
we should track it in a different bug. If you are still willing to use
Ubuntu then please open a new bug about the new issue. If the machine is
not booting (black screen) then try accessing the grub menu (tap Escape
or hold Shift during early boot) and select recovery mode. In recovery
mode please then run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot1.txt
  journalctl -b-2 > prevboot2.txt

and attach the resulting text files to the new bug, not this one.

Title:
  Ubuntu 23.04 + Gnome + Nvidia 525 + Vsync = low fps in Xorg sessions

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Currently using Nvidia driver 525, which is the "tested" and
  recommended driver according to Ubuntu's additional driver tool (as of
  this writing).

  - manually resizing "files" windows = low fps and a little bit of
  pixelation

  - moving windows around = drop in fps every now and then

  - opening the Gnome overview = sometimes buttery smooth 60fps but
  sometimes stuttery low fps that takes time to "catch up" to smoothness
  again

  - resizing Chromium or Firefox window = low fps, glitchy window
  behaviour etc.

  How to fix it? Well, this is what I found works thus far:

  - disable both "vsync" and "allow flipping" in Nvidia-settings

  - now everything is buttery smooth again; all animations, apps, games
  and more

  - doing this will introduce lots of tearing on the Gnome desktop and
  applications though

  - then force full composition pipeline to get rid of the tearing by
  adding this start-up line to Ubuntu's start-up applications: nvidia-
  settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0
  {ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"

  - Use Wayland alternatively: Wayland doesn't have any of these issues
  at all, it's a buttery smooth fully vsynced experience ootb, but a
  bunch of new problems arise instead: Can't set global hotkeys for
  recording in OBS, OBS recording performance is pretty bad, Gnome
  folder windows start flickering somestimes, Gnome windows glitch out
  when trying to resize them manually, Steam flickering sometimes,
  browsers such as Firefox and Chromium have to be set to Wayland mode
  in order to solve stuttering video playback issues, Nvidia-settings is
  missing a bunch of settings and features when compared to X11... and

Bug description:
  After upgrading from 20.04 LTS to 22.04 LTS I can't print colored PDF
  document. The print appears always b/w regardless color printing was
  enabled or not. Printing from LibreOffice produces a color print. This
  behavior (bug) is reproducible on three upgraded machines. It would be
  nice to have color print back again.

  [ Impact ]

  If the PPD file for a printer has a ColorModel option and the only
  choice in it for printing in color is not named RGB but CMYK instead,
  the printer cannot be made printing in color with intuitive methods,
  usually selcting the color choice in the print dialog (which makes
  ColorModel=CMYK be sent along with the job).

  Only an ugly command-line-based workaround, running the command

  lpadmin -p PRINTER -o print-color-mode-default=color

  makes the printer print in color.

  An example for printers with such PPDs are printers from RICOH and OEM
  (Lanier, InfoTec, Savin, ..), so many high-end color laser printers
  are affected.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Remove the workaround if you had applied it:

  lpadmin -p PRINTER -R print-color-mode-default

  If you have an affected printer, print a PDF file (or use the print
  functionality in an application) with colored content and choose the
  setting for color printing in the print dialog. When printing via
  command line do

  lp -d PRINTER -o ColorModel=CMYK FILE.pdf

  Without the SRU applied you will get a grayscale/monochrome printout,
  with it applied, you will get a colored printout.

  To test without a printer:

  Stop CUPS:

  sudo systemctl stop cups

  Edit /etc/cups/cups-files.conf to have a line

  FiileDevice Yes

  and start CUPS again:

  sudo systemctl start cups

  Then create a queue using the attached sample PPD file:

  lpadmin -p color-test -E -v file:/tmp/printout -P Ricoh-
  PDF_Printer-PDF.ppd

  Print a file to this queue as described above. When the job is done
  ("lpstat" does not show it any more), open /tmp/printout with a text
  editor. Check whether it contains a line

  @PJL SET RENDERMODE=COLOR

  near its beginning, and NOT a line

  @PJL SET RENDERMODE=GRAYSCALE

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  The patches are simple and they are also for some time in newer CUPS
  versions (2.4.2 and newer) which are included in several distributions
  (Ubuntu 22.10, 23.04, and others) and did not cause any complaints
  about color printing. So the regression potential is very low.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2023776] Re: Ubuntu 23.04 + Gnome + Nvidia 525 + Vsync = low fps in Xorg sessions

2023-07-25 Thread Alexander
Hello Daniel, I apologize for the huge delay, but I have been
experiencing a number of show stopping issues that I have yet to recover
from.

As written above: After all the issues that I had with Ubuntu 23.04, I
decided to "downgrade" to Ubuntu 22.04.2, which was working just fine at
first, see comment above. I was using the recommended and "tested"
Nvidia driver 525, which was the one that the Ubuntu additional drivers
tool suggested. Recently Nvidia released the proprietary Nvidia driver
version 535, which was made available via Ubuntu 22.04.2. So I ran the
Ubuntu system updates utility like I usually would, in the hopes of
Ubuntu picking up the newest Nvidia driver automatically, like it has
always done in the past. Ubuntu did find and suggest to install the new
Nvidia driver, but...

Just like on Ubuntu 23.04, Ubuntu 22.04.2 also mentioned something about
a "partial upgrade", see attached screenshots below. Trying to click on
"continue" instead didn't offer any updates, so I went back to the
"partial upgrade" option, because my system wasn't getting any updates
whatsoever ever since this "issue" appeared out of nowhere. In the
middle of the "partial upgrade" my 22.04.2 system went black, meaning
all of my screens turned off randomly, and the computer would not react
to any user input whatsoever. After being forced to perform a hard
reboot, the computer did not want to boot, spitting out several "journal
errors" during the boot process.

I would like to mention that this was a fresh install of 22.04.2 - not a
single ppa etc. was added manually - just a handful of native apps
installed as Snap via the official Ubuntu Software Center (including
Steam, also installed via the Ubuntu Software Center). I hardly used the
system, because I was still in the process of transferring over the data
that I had to recover from my busted 23.04 install.

A few notes here:

- this happened totally randomly
- previous system updates were completed without any issues whatsoever
- there were no issues whatsoever before the new Nvidia driver 535
- the partial upgrade option mentioned a bunch of Nvidia 535 modules to be
installed
- and the old 530 driver to be removed
- and it also mentioned a ton of other things to be updated as well, including
the kernel and a bunch of Ubuntu desktop files

Digging around I found out that both this and the low latency kernel
subject is a common and repeating issue:

- https://askubuntu.com/questions/1443779/why-doesnt-this-software-
updater-warning-tell-me-what-is-going-to-be-installed

-
https://www.reddit.com/r/Kubuntu/comments/14ndb7a/why_do_i_keep_getting_these_oracle_and_lowlatency/

all-updates-can-be-installed

- https://www.google.com/search?channel=fs=ubuntu-
sn=ubuntu+nvidia+partial+upgrade

Verdict:

Now I have to recover my freshly installed 22.04.2 system again, just
like I did with 23.04 a few days ago. Since I don't have the time to
troubleshoot this yet again, I am now forced to go for a clean install
again, but I will be using a different distro this time around as it
seems that even Ubuntu LTS has become highly unstable / unusable for
Nvidia users. This is extremely aggravating to say the least. This
entire ordeal will set me back another one or two weeks at the very
least. Been an Ubuntu user for decades now, and recently switched from
AMD to Nvidia gpu, and it's been nothing but trouble thus far, sadly.
Using an AMD gpu was flawless for the most part, but on Nvidia it's one
headache after another on Ubuntu.

  - then force full composition pipeline to get rid of the tearing by
  adding this start-up line to Ubuntu's start-up applications: nvidia-
  settings --assign

  kwin might crash after running some time

  Two commits have been reverted upstream since 22.2.x branch was
  closed, needs those backported to fix this.

  [Test case]

  Run kwin for a day or so, which is usually enough time to hit this.

  Crash happens mostly on a notification popups, so system must be
  actively receiving notifications to test the crash. Without that crash
  may not happen even in a week of runtime.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  This just reverts two commits, and they have been upstream for a few
  months now, so these causing a regression is unlikely.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1990341] Re: [SRU] Support to install nvidia driver by allowing list

2023-07-25 Thread Dirk Su
Tested with Nvidia GPU 10de:2717. Disable restricted in jammy-updates
and jammy-security, which make Nvidia 525 unavailable. Add
/etc/customer_supported_gpus.json

{

{
  "devid": "0x2717",
  "name": "TEST 2717",
  "branch": "510.60",
  "feature": [
"runtimepm"
  ]
}
  ]
}

Type "ubuntu-driver list" in console did not show anything.

  [ Impact ]

   * In NVIDIA new GPU release cycle, NVIDIA ships their new GPUs to
  OEM/ODM for production.

  In the meantime, NVIDIA usually notify OEM/ODM/Canonical (under NDA)
  to use a specific nvidia version to development/production.

  NVIDIA and OEN/ODM will announce the next generation combination at
  the same time usually when the factory ready to ship the product.

  We made Ubuntu as a leading distribution supports many cutting edge
  devices, it's time to have an official way to make the nvidia
  installation consistent in unannounced (yet) nvidia devices to support
  OEM/ODM factory shipment for our growing counterparts.

  [ Test Plan ]

   * Steps to make sure it works:

  1. pick a cutting edge nvidia graphic.
  2. remove nv-525 from the pool by removing restricted in jammy-updates and
jammy-security
  3. check the nv support status:
  ```
  $ ubuntu-drivers list
  oem-fix-gfx-nvidia-ondemandmode
  libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom
  oem-somerville-cinccino-meta
  ```
  4. modify custom file
  ```
  $ cat /etc/custom_supported_gpus.json
  {
    "chips": [
  {
    "devid": "0x24BA",
    "name": "TEST 24BA",
    "branch": "580.1234",
    "features": [
  "runtimepm"
    ]
  },
  {
    "devid": "0x25BC",
    "name": "TEST 25BC",
    "branch": "510",
    "features": [
  "runtimepm"
    ]
  }
    ]
  }
  ```
  5. make sure the hook works
  ```
  $ ubuntu-drivers list
  nvidia-driver-510, (kernel modules provided by nvidia-dkms-510)
  oem-fix-gfx-nvidia-ondemandmode
  libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom
  oem-somerville-cinccino-meta
  [ Where problems could occur ]
   * This feature only impact target system has a custom file
  "/etc/custom_supported_gpus.json". And it won't generate automatically
  which should not impact normal users
