[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028469] Re: Use less generic name for monitors.xml to avoid clashing with other desktops
> I've always thought the generic name is useful because it potentially allows multiple desktop environments to share a single layout... Assuming that didn't break any of them. monitors.xml generated by GNOME is incompatible with monitors.xml generated by MATE (see file layouts in the top post), which is indicated in the title of this issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2028469 Title: Use less generic name for monitors.xml to avoid clashing with other desktops Status in Mutter: Unknown Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Opinion Bug description: Expected behaviour cinnamon is using a dedicated name, cinnamon-monitors.xml. Actual behaviour GNOME's monitors.xml: ``` 0 0 yes Virtual-1 ??? 0x 0x 1600 900 60 0 0 1 yes Virtual-1 unknown unknown unknown 1600 900 60 ``` MATE's monitors.xml: ``` no ??? 0x 0x 1600 900 60 0 0 normal no no yes ``` Steps to reproduce the behaviour Both GNOME and MATE can be installed on the same distro. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028438] Re: gnome-control-center crash
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps: 1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us. Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2028438 Title: gnome-control-center crash Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Suddenly today, while doing a backup (rsync) system started going to sleep... I have the same problem -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1979891 Title: Firefox becomes unusable when adjusting window size Status in Mozilla Firefox: New Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: OS version: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Firefox version: 1:1snap1-0ubuntu2 - 101.0.1 (64-bit) Sometimes when I adjust the size of a Firefox window, that window becomes messed up: the contents don't fill the window, not all the controls are visible, and clicks are offset, so if I click on one spot, the window behaves as if I clicked on a different spot (so it's impossible to use Firefox in that window anymore). I seem to remember being able to fix this by dragging and dropping the window onto a different monitor or workspace in the GNOME Activities view, but I'm currently experiencing the problem and that is not helping. I took a screenshot of what's currently going on (attached) which happened when I tried to maximize the window. This is on a laptop with an external monitor that I'm using in portrait mode, via a USB-C connection that's converted to HDMI. I had plugged in to the external monitor a few minutes before this happens, and plugging in or possibly unplugging seems to make this bug more likely. This is a relatively new problem, starting within the last few weeks. (Maybe after I switched to the snap version of Firefox? However, - when you switch to the other desktop environment, the screen resolution - is reset because their setup in monitors.xml is different. + Steps I used to reproduce the issue in Ubuntu 22.04 (as a virtual machine): + * Log into GNOME + * Ubuntu comes with GNOME, so install MATE in addition: `sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extras mate-desktop-environment` + * Run `$ gnome-control-center display`, change the "Resolution" to 1600x900, click on the "Apply": This will 1) generate "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml", 2)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1996652] Re: Nautilus search is slow and jumbles keyboard input on 22.10
** Changed in: ibus Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to ibus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1996652 Title: Nautilus search is slow and jumbles keyboard input on 22.10 Status in ibus: Fix Released Status in ibus package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Since my upgrade to 22.10, I've found the search box in Nautilus (files) essentially unusable. It is notably sluggish to launch and browse in general. But most detrimental to the usability is this: The characters do not appear in real time as I type. When they do appear, they are sometimes jumbled or in reverse (consistently reproducible). As I type in the file search box, the circular cursor spins intermittently, then the UI catches up and it's not what I typed. For example, I just typed "umbrella" into the search box, and Nautilus searched for: "umballer" Off-the-cuff test #2, searched for "Ubuntu" and I ended up with "Ubunut" ... you can't make this up. :-) Test #3, typed Launchpad, ended up with a search for "Laudaphcn". Keyboard input everywhere else on the system is otherwise normal and snappy. No pun intended, really. FWIW Nautilus files preferences are as default (Search in subfolders, Show thumbnails, File count == This computer only). $ apt-cache policy nautilus nautilus: Installed: 1:43.0-1ubuntu1 Candidate: 1:43.0-1ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1:43.0-1ubuntu1 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu kinetic/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status $ uname -r 5.19.0-23-generic $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 22.10 Release:22.10 $ snap list Name Version RevTracking Publisher Notes bare 1.0 5 latest/stable canonical✓ base core 16-2.57.2 13886 latest/stable canonical✓ core core18 20221027 2620 latest/stable canonical✓ base core20 20221027 1695 latest/stable canonical✓ base gnome-3-34-18040+git.3556cb3 77 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - gnome-3-38-20040+git.6f39565 119latest/stable canonical✓ - google-cloud-sdk 409.0.0 298latest/stable google-cloud-sdk✓ classic gtk-common-themes 0.1-81-g442e511 1535 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - snap-store 41.3-64-g512c0ff 599latest/stable/… canonical✓ - snapd 2.57.417336 latest/stable canonical✓ snapd snapd-desktop-integration 0.1 14 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - Side question: Since this system has transitioned across several upgrades from 20.04 to 22.10, do I really need all of these core* and gnome* snaps? *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1968213 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1968213 It is advised to select the best business for the task and, more crucially, high-quality supplies. Then I go to settings > appearanace to adjust dock icon size and my dock and Desktop icons are reset to default icons. This happens every time I open settings>appearance. It overrides gnome-tweaks icon settings. I expected to be able to change the dock icon size without my icon theme being changed and my icon settings to stay as I had set them in Tweaks. I can reset the icon theme in Tweaks and they stay set after reboot. Then if I open settings again and use appearance feature of any kind my Tweaks icon settings revert to Yaru. In get_basename() and g_file_get_basename(), when the file name cannot be parsed, NULL is returned; Nautilus does not check this and this results in a NPD and a crash. The issue on GNOME GitLab explains this pretty well: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/2376 And the code in question is also in Nemo and Caja. History of the code: The faulty code was introduced in Nautilus 2.20, before Nemo and Caja were forked; these file managers have the same issue and same code in the function. The simplest POC I found was running this via DBus, which I'm not 100% sure if I've altered correctly for Nemo and Caja, but regardless for Nautilus this results in a crash. ``` Nov 27 20:38:32 Joshua-2210Test nautilus[5433]: g_object_ref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed Nov 27 20:38:32 Joshua-2210Test kernel: [ 825.449866] pool-org.gnome.[5439]: segfault at 0 ip 7f3058c6c570 sp 7f3051dfa968 error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.7400.0[7f3058c03000+8f000] Nov 27 20:38:32 Joshua-2210Test kernel: [ 825.449878] Code: 0f 85 bc fe ff ff e9 42 ff ff ff 66 66 2e 0f 1f 84 00 00 00 00 00 0f 1f 40 00 f3 0f 1e fa 48 89 d1 48 85 f6 0f 89 b0 00 00 00 <0f> b6 07 84 c0 75 15 eb 27 0f 1f 80 00 00 00 00 0f b6 42 01 48 8d ``` Attached is the poc.py, made by Wu Chunming. ** Nemo ** Upstream, version 5.6.0: (more advanced/verbose) upstream patch: https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/commit/b9953e61f61724f46740ac77317720549cdf6005 possible further problems: https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/commit/33c37a82e88a8e6b289b3b0d2010ce0caece4bdb ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 22.10 Package: nautilus 1:43.0-1ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.19.0-23.24-generic 5.19.7 Uname: Linux 5.19.0-23-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.23.1-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Sun Nov 27 20:41:20 2022 GsettingsChanges: InstallationDate: Installed on 2022-09-18 (70 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 22.10 "Kinetic Kudu" - Alpha amd64 (20220918) ProcEnviron: SHELL=/bin/bash LANG=en_US.UTF-8 TERM=xterm-256color XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= PATH=(custom, no user) SourcePackage: nautilus UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) usr_lib_nautilus: file-roller 43.0-1 nautilus-extension-gnome-terminal 3.46.2-1ubuntu1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/caja/+bug/1998060/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Sorry to hear you're still having problems. Since the new issue has different symptoms on a different Ubuntu release we should track it in a different bug. If the machine is not booting (black screen) then try accessing the grub menu (tap Escape or hold Shift during early boot) and select recovery mode. The print appears always b/w regardless color printing was enabled or not. Printing from LibreOffice produces a color print. This behavior (bug) is reproducible on three upgraded machines. It would be nice to have color print back again. [ Impact ] If the PPD file for a printer has a ColorModel option and the only choice in it for printing in color is not named RGB but CMYK instead, the printer cannot be made printing in color with intuitive methods, usually selcting the color choice in the print dialog (which makes ColorModel=CMYK be sent along with the job). Only an ugly command-line-based workaround, running the command lpadmin -p PRINTER -o print-color-mode-default=color makes the printer print in color. An example for printers with such PPDs are printers from RICOH and OEM (Lanier, InfoTec, Savin, ..), so many high-end color laser printers are affected. [ Test Plan ] Remove the workaround if you had applied it: lpadmin -p PRINTER -R print-color-mode-default If you have an affected printer, print a PDF file (or use the print functionality in an application) with colored content and choose the setting for color printing in the print dialog. When printing via command line do lp -d PRINTER -o ColorModel=CMYK FILE.pdf Without the SRU applied you will get a grayscale/monochrome printout, with it applied, you will get a colored printout. To test without a printer: Stop CUPS: sudo systemctl stop cups Edit /etc/cups/cups-files.conf to have a line FiileDevice Yes and start CUPS again: sudo systemctl start cups Then create a queue using the attached sample PPD file: lpadmin -p color-test -E -v file:/tmp/printout -P Ricoh- PDF_Printer-PDF.ppd Print a file to this queue as described above. When the job is done ("lpstat" does not show it any more), open /tmp/printout with a text editor. Check whether it contains a line @PJL SET RENDERMODE=COLOR near its beginning, and NOT a line @PJL SET RENDERMODE=GRAYSCALE [ Where problems could occur ] The patches are simple and they are also for some time in newer CUPS versions (2.4.2 and newer) which are included in several distributions (Ubuntu 22.10, 23.04, and others) and did not cause any complaints about color printing. So the regression potential is very low. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2023776] Re: Ubuntu 23.04 + Gnome + Nvidia 525 + Vsync = low fps in Xorg sessions
Hello Daniel, I apologize for the huge delay, but I have been experiencing a number of show stopping issues that I have yet to recover from. As written above: After all the issues that I had with Ubuntu 23.04, I decided to "downgrade" to Ubuntu 22.04.2, which was working just fine at first, see comment above. I was using the recommended and "tested" Nvidia driver 525, which was the one that the Ubuntu additional drivers tool suggested. Recently Nvidia released the proprietary Nvidia driver version 535, which was made available via Ubuntu 22.04.2. So I ran the Ubuntu system updates utility like I usually would, in the hopes of Ubuntu picking up the newest Nvidia driver automatically, like it has always done in the past. Ubuntu did find and suggest to install the new Nvidia driver, but... Just like on Ubuntu 23.04, Ubuntu 22.04.2 also mentioned something about a "partial upgrade", see attached screenshots below. Trying to click on "continue" instead didn't offer any updates, so I went back to the "partial upgrade" option, because my system wasn't getting any updates whatsoever ever since this "issue" appeared out of nowhere. In the middle of the "partial upgrade" my 22.04.2 system went black, meaning all of my screens turned off randomly, and the computer would not react to any user input whatsoever. After being forced to perform a hard reboot, the computer did not want to boot, spitting out several "journal errors" during the boot process. I would like to mention that this was a fresh install of 22.04.2 - not a single ppa etc. was added manually - just a handful of native apps installed as Snap via the official Ubuntu Software Center (including Steam, also installed via the Ubuntu Software Center). I hardly used the system, because I was still in the process of transferring over the data that I had to recover from my busted 23.04 install. A few notes here: - this happened totally randomly - previous system updates were completed without any issues whatsoever - there were no issues whatsoever before the new Nvidia driver 535 - the partial upgrade option mentioned a bunch of Nvidia 535 modules to be installed - and the old 530 driver to be removed - and it also mentioned a ton of other things to be updated as well, including the kernel and a bunch of Ubuntu desktop files Digging around I found out that both this and the low latency kernel subject is a common and repeating issue: - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1443779/why-doesnt-this-software- updater-warning-tell-me-what-is-going-to-be-installed - https://www.reddit.com/r/Kubuntu/comments/14ndb7a/why_do_i_keep_getting_these_oracle_and_lowlatency/ - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1334791/not-all-updates-can-be- installed-in-software-updater - https://askubuntu.com/questions/725481/ubuntu-software-updater-not- all-updates-can-be-installed - https://www.google.com/search?channel=fs=ubuntu- sn=ubuntu+nvidia+partial+upgrade Verdict: Now I have to recover my freshly installed 22.04.2 system again, just like I did with 23.04 a few days ago. Since I don't have the time to troubleshoot this yet again, I am now forced to go for a clean install again, but I will be using a different distro this time around as it seems that even Ubuntu LTS has become highly unstable / unusable for Nvidia users. This is extremely aggravating to say the least. This entire ordeal will set me back another one or two weeks at the very least. Been an Ubuntu user for decades now, and recently switched from AMD to Nvidia gpu, and it's been nothing but trouble thus far, sadly. Using an AMD gpu was flawless for the most part, but on Nvidia it's one headache after another on Ubuntu. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2023776 Title: Ubuntu 23.04 + Gnome + Nvidia 525 + Vsync = low fps in Xorg sessions Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Currently using Nvidia driver 525, which is the "tested" and recommended driver according to Ubuntu's additional driver tool (as of this writing). - manually resizing "files" windows = low fps and a little bit of pixelation - moving windows around = drop in fps every now and then - opening the Gnome overview = sometimes buttery smooth 60fps but sometimes stuttery low fps that takes time to "catch up" to smoothness again - resizing Chromium or Firefox window = low fps, glitchy window behaviour etc. How to fix it?
