[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-04-01 Thread John Johansen
We have an update of the firefox profile coming that supports the
/opt/firefox/firefox location used as the default install for the
firefox downloaded directly from mozilla.org

If you are running firefox out of your home directory, that will not be
directly supported and you will need to chose to do one of the following
to fix the issue.

1. The recommended way is updating the firefox profile in
/etc/apparmor.d/firefox by adding the location you have firefox
installed, and then reloading the profile with sudo apparmor_parser -r
/etc/apparmor.d/firefox.

2. You can disable user namespaces, this will keep firefox from trying
to use them as part of ts sandbox https://lwn.net/Articles/673597/

3. the least recommended way to fix this is you can disable the finer
grained user namespace restrictions as outlined in
https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-23-10-restricted-unprivileged-user-
namespaces

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

five years to fix an smb login error. And here I thought my company dev cycle

I am also affected by this bug on Linux Mint 20 with Thunar as file manager.
Just came here to get a bit shocked and to let people know the bug is still out

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2019137] Re: gnome-software should (?) be separated from the packagekit

This has been done in Debian Unstable and I have requested a Feature

Title:
gnome-software should (?) be separated from the packagekit

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
Given that the Snap Store is currently the default in Ubuntu instead
of GNOME Software, the only reason GNOME Software (along with the Snap
Store) can be installed is to support Flatpak applications.

In the current instance, if you want to add flatpak support, GNOME
Software is installed with both the apt packagekit add-on and the
flatpak plugin, which is duplication of work (Software Updater already
works on updates, and Snap Store works on showing deb apps).

And since the future app store explicitly refuses [1], [2] to support
flatpak applications, users who need this package format will be
forced to put GNOME Software with everything I pointed out above.

Therefore, it would be very nice if the developers removed the
packagekit add-on from the "gnome-software part" and made it a "plug-
  in for gnome-software".

I, unfortunately, have no such experience with packaging deb packages
at the moment, and it turns out that it will obviously be necessary to
work out both the code part (which, as far as I can see, won't be very
difficult [3]), as well as the part where we will have to figure out
where and how to insert the plugin as mandatory (for example, when the
user completely gives up on snap packages) and as optional (because
  the Snap Store already stands).

Also, let me know if this needs to be sent to upstream (Debian) instead of
here.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056767] Re: DRAFT [FFe] gnome-software package split

2024-04-01 Thread Jeremy Bícha
** Description changed:

- As requested by the Ubuntu Release Team, I am providing early notice of
- a Feature Freeze Exception I intend to request soon (approximately March
- 27)
-
- What is Needed Now
- -
- Waiting a few days for review of
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/gnome-software/-/merge_requests/16
-
  Impact
  --
- I request permission to land a change I am making in Debian to split
gnome-software's .deb support into a separate package,
gnome-software-plugin-deb, to match the existing -snap and -flatpak packages.
This will allow users and flavors to specifically opt into the parts of the
GNOME Software experience they want. For instance, someone may want to use only
the Flatpak part because they use the Snap Store to manage .debs and Snaps. Or
maybe they want a different combination.
+ I request permission to sync the gnome-software packaging from Debian. The
biggest change is splitting gnome-software's .deb support into a separate
package, gnome-software-plugin-deb, to match the existing -snap and -flatpak
packages. This will allow users and flavors to specifically opt into the parts
of the GNOME Software experience they want. For instance, someone may want to
use only the Flatpak part because they use the Snap Store to manage .debs and
Snaps. Or maybe they want a different combination.

This has been requested by multiple users on Ubuntu Discourse and at
least one Launchpad bug and one Debian bug.

- Potential Problems
- ---
- gnome-software has an explicit Recommend: gnome-software-plugin-deb so that
people upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will keep the deb support installed. That
recommends will be dropped for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS because it won't be needed
then. (There is a Depends on the virtual packages that enable installing apps.)
-
- Other Related Changes
- -
- I am dropping the fwupd plugin to Suggests so upgrades to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
will likely get it uninstalled and new installs won't have it either unless a
user explicitly installs it later.
+ fwupd plugin
+
+ I am dropping the fwupd plugin (now in a separate package too) to Suggests so
upgrades to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will likely get it uninstalled and new installs
won't have it either unless a user explicitly installs it later.

Ubuntu Desktop includes the firmware-updater snap. Several Ubuntu
desktop flavors also include it. For people who don't want snaps, there
is also the gnome-firmware app packaged as a .deb.

Because Ubuntu already has update-manager to handle apt update
notifications, I am also dropping the autostart file to reduce
  background RAM use.

A few Ubuntu desktop flavors do not provide any firmware updater app at
all. Ubuntu Budgie developers thought a firmware updater app was too
technical for inclusion in the default Ubuntu 24.04 LTS install.

+ autostart
+ -
+ I have also dropped the autostart file since the fwupd plugin is no longer
included by default and Ubuntu already has ways to notify users about available
apt updates (update-manager and unattended upgrades) and snaps already
automatically update.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag in native terminal on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-01 Thread Egmont Koblinger
> [amirsalarsafaei] I downgraded my mutter to 45.0-3ubuntu3 but the
issues persists

Mentioning just in case:

You should downgrade all the packages built from mutter's source that
you have installed, including libmutter-13-0, mutter-common, mutter-
common-bin etc. (Or at least I don't know which one really matters.)

And then you need to log out of your graphical session and log back in,
otherwise the previous mutter keeps running.

I'm pointing these out because this suspected mutter change is the only
relevant that has a reasonable chance of causing the issues, and
multiple people have reported that downgrading fixed the issue for them,
yet you report that it didn't for you. At this point we have to consider
that you might have made a mistake during downgrading, rather than the
bug being somewhere else.

> how to downgrade my mutter to specific version without apt?

I'd download these older packages from packages.ubuntu.com (as you
presumably already did with mutter), install them with `dpkg -i`, and
put them on "hold" (something like: `echo "mutter hold" | sudo dpkg
--set-selections`, and repeat for the other packages).

> an interesting thing is that the gnome-console is fine but other vte
based terminals have severe lag.

gnome-console uses gtk4 (and in turn the gtk4 variant of vte), others
use gtk3 (and in turn the gtk3 variant of vte). (I'm just stating this
as a fact. Don't ask how it triggers the bug to manifest with one but
not with the other, I don't know.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag in native terminal on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-01 Thread Ian Flintoft
I am seeing similar interactivity issues on fully updated 22.04 on a Dell
Precision laptop with Nvidia + X11 that started a day or so ago. Most
noticeable in the terminal with lag/stuttering and seemingly lost keyboard
inputs, but also affecting other apps with stuttering keyboard inputs and
sometimes seemingly lost mouse clicks.

I will try downgrading mutter and suggested.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag in native terminal on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-01 Thread amirsalarsafaei
So I'm on release 23.10 kernel 6.7.10-060710-generic x11 + nvidia 545 drivers +
gnome 45.2
yesterday I upgraded these packages:

2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade mutter-common:all 45.2-0ubuntu3 45.2-0ubuntu4
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade gir1.2-mutter-13:amd64 45.2-0ubuntu3 45.2-0ubuntu4
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade libmutter-13-0:amd64 45.2-0ubuntu3 45.2-0ubuntu4
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade mutter-common-bin:amd64 45.2-0ubuntu3 45.2-0ubuntu4
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade libpulse-mainloop-glib0:amd64 1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4
1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4.1
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade libpulse0:amd64 1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4
1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4.1
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade libxnvctrl0:amd64 510.47.03-0ubuntu1
550.54.14-0ubuntu1
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade nvidia-settings:amd64 510.47.03-0ubuntu1
550.54.14-0ubuntu1
2024-03-31 14:25:59 upgrade snapd:amd64 2.60.4+23.10.1 2.61.3+23.10

and the bug appeared afterward unfortunately I couldn't downgrade to mutter
45.2-0ubuntu3 as it was no longer available through package manager but I
downgraded my mutter to 45.0-3ubuntu3 but the issues persists. 45.0-3ubuntu3.

an interesting thing is that the gnome-console is fine but other vte
based terminals have severe lag. Does anyone know how to downgrade my
mutter to specific version without apt? Do I just have to build it from
the git and replace it? (I'm scared of breaking my environment)

I can confirm the issue (I am on ubuntu 22.04 nvidia + x11). gnome-
terminal, emacs and similar applications was lagging. Starting an
application that updated the screen continuously (such as glxgears)
seems to have alleviated the problem.

Downgrading mutter to from 42.9-0ubuntu7 (which I got in the latest
upgrade yesterday) to 42.0-3ubuntu2 (release, which was easy to get hold
of) seems to have fixed the problem.
