[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-04 Thread Cristiano Fraga G. Nunes
Hello Daniel van Vugt,

I wanted to express my gratitude for your efforts. I've recently tested
your mutter version with the following packages:

- gir1.2-mutter-10_42.9-0ubuntu7vv1_amd64.deb
- libmutter-10-0_42.9-0ubuntu7vv1_amd64.deb
- mutter-common_42.9-0ubuntu7vv1_all.deb

I'm pleased to report that the bug I encountered has been successfully
resolved. Additionally, I'm using NVIDIA with driver version "nvidia-
driver-535".

Once again, thank you for your work!

Best regards.

  [ Impact ]

Input or the entire screen may freeze at times on systems using the
  Nvidia Xorg driver with GNOME.

  [ Test Plan ]

  0. Set up a desktop with Nvidia driver 545 or 550.
  1. Log into Ubuntu, ensuring it's a Xorg session.
  2. Open a Terminal, resize it vigorously, and type several lines of text.
  3. Verify that input never froze for any perceptible period of time.
  4. Run: journalctl -b0 | grep MetaSyncRing
  5. Verify the above command does NOT show messages such as:

Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Too many reboots -- disabling

[ Where problems could occur ]

Anywhere in Nvidia (proprietary driver) Xorg sessions since that's the
  code being modified.

  [ Original Description ]

There is a noticeable delay in input while using the native terminal.
I belive it was caused by a recent software update, as this issue is
  relatively new.

Chromium Snap & KDE Plasma 6: AppArmor Profile Update Needed

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy x64

I hope this is the correct package to assign this request to:

In KDE Plasma 6, the Chromium snap cannot longer access KDE Wallet to
  decrypt its password store.

This makes all stored passwords unavailable as soon as the system is
upgraded from Plasma 5 to Plasma 6.

Chromium writes the following error messages to the console:

  -
  [5362:5362:0324/103716.837413:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(576)] Failed to call
method: org.kde.KWallet.isEnabled: object_path= /modules/kwalletd6:

  [5362:5362:0324/103716.838295:ERROR:kwallet_dbus.cc(503)] Error contacting
kwalletd6 (close)
  -

Followed by hundreds of messages as the following:

  -
  ERROR:login_database.cc(1046) Password decryption failed, encryption_result
is 2
  -

It appears to work to "just" whitelist the new kwalletd module name in

  /var/lib/snapd/apparmor/profiles/snap.chromium.chromium (and maybe
  /var/lib/snapd/apparmor/profiles/snap.chromium.chromedriver ?)

  followed by

  $ systemctl restart apparmor
  $ systemctl restart snapd.apparmor
  $ systemctl restart apparmor

(Not sure if both of these are necessary, and if so, in what order.)

  and completely restart Chromium.

The new KWallet section looks as follows - I only added the ",6" to
  the patterns:

  -

  # KWallet's client API is still in use in KDE/Plasma. It's DBus API relies
upon
  # member data for access to its 'folders' and 'entries' and it therefore does
  # not allow for application isolation via AppArmor. For details, see:
  # - https://cgit.kde.org/kdelibs.git/tree/kdeui/util/kwallet.h?h=v4.14.33
  #
  dbus (receive, send)
  bus=session
  path=/modules/kwalletd{,5,6}
  interface=org.freedesktop.DBus.*
  peer=(label=unconfined),

  dbus (receive, send)
  bus=session
  path=/modules/kwalletd{,5,6}
  interface=org.kde.KWallet
  peer=(label=unconfined),

  -

I hope that at least this report may be found by other people running
into the same trouble I just did...

aptdaemon is abandoned and unmaintained. It has already been dropped

Bug description:
  [context]
ADSys is a tool designed for administering and implementing Group Policy
Objects (GPOs) from Active Directory on Linux systems. It includes a suite of
services and commands that empower administrators to efficiently manage policy
updates and maintain compliance with organizational business rules.

Given that ADSys directly interfaces with Active Directory and needs
to align with new business requirements in LTS releases, it has been
essential to keep the package consistently updated with the latest
changes of ADSys upstream source. As ADSys is a key component of our
commercial offerings, our customers anticipate the availability of
recently implemented features in the 22.04 release.

Now that ADSys has a complete set of features, the request is to
proceed with a one-off release of ADSys 0.14.1 to 22.04. Please note
that any new features introduced in subsequent versions will be
exclusively available in 24.04 and later releases.

This version includes a comprehensive end to end automated test suite
that runs ADSys against a real Active directory environment.

Version 0.14.1 is available for 22.04 in a PPA
  (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-enterprise-
desktop/+archive/ubuntu/adsys) and already used in production by
  customers.

At this time of writing the number of open issues is 1 in Launchpad
and 16 in GitHub including 6 enhancements. None of them have a high or
  critical importance.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No 23.04 won't get a fix and also shouldn't have the bug, because it
reached end-of-life in January;

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

That said, I've seen evidence that there might be other ways to trigger
similar issues on Nvidia so it's possible other releases could get into
a similar state and need the same fix. But for now the only supported
releases that definitely contain the bug are 22.04 and 23.10.

Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events

[ Where problems could occur ]

Anywhere in Nvidia (proprietary driver) Xorg sessions since that's the
  code being modified.

  [ Original Description ]

There is a noticeable delay in input while using the native terminal.
I belive it was caused by a recent software update, as this issue is
  relatively new.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058409] Re: Install of tevlive-full hangs: tex/context/base/mkiv/l-sandbox.lua:180: module 'socket.core' not found

I've prepared a patch like suggested by @pjb1008 but I wasn't able to
build a package with this patch.

EDIT: But I can confirm that adding the option "--socket" to the luatex
command fixes the issue.

Bug description:

The issue is being discussed upstream on
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/issues/3252 , the test is new
and is currently buggy. Upstream/Debian/Ubuntu already disabled
similar tests in 2.79.1 but that one as not noticed to fail because
it's skipped during build so is only showing now in the installed-
tests result and in autopkgtest. (And the package is in
Debian/experimental where it didn't get tested by the Debian CI)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-04 Thread Mikael Wikman
Amazing work @vanvugt, and thank you for the speedy update, holidays,
and all. The fix is working great on my 23.10 system.

Is there any chance we might see a fix for 23.04 as well?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
And no I don't think we ever had much chance of catching this in early
testing, because:

* I didn't know some of the code being moved is only used on Nvidia.

* Even after I started testing Nvidia in response to this bug and
developing a fix, the problem is very subtle for me. Almost
imperceptible other than the log messages. So I would not have noticed
it as a bug myself.

* No one on the team who does use Nvidia has mentioned it to me yet.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060204] [NEW] Resolution drop on third monitor on USB C

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a laptop with an integrated intel intel gpu, 2/3 days ago it was working
fine; I have 1 monitor plugged with hdmi and the other one with USB-c
Now, the one plugged with USB-C get a lower resolution 1024*768 (not
changeable) if the HDMI is plugged at the same time (it works well if I only
have the USB c plugged)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-04 Thread Filip M
This one really affects my productivity. It's not only terminal it's also slack
and some other apps.
Looking forward to @Daniel's PPA.
This also raises a question of testing upstream packages by Ubuntu team, as
clearly this wasn't tested in all possible usage cases. I understand not
everything can be tested in depth, but a bug of this magnitude needs to be
triaged ASAP and not in weeks time frame. It's bad for enterprise users, and
it's bad for all the newcomers. We decade old Ubuntu users are kinda used to
this situations, not happy but used to it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This bug was properly triaged one day after it was submitted. On a
weekend and public holiday even.

The proposed fix is ready for testing on 22.04:
https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/ubuntu/mutter

Unfortunately 23.10 is having issues with flaky test cases so hasn't
been published yet.

Title:
  [snap] unable to read /proc/pressure/{cpu,io,memory}

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
During normal operation, chromium wants to read
/proc/pressure/{cpu,io,memory} but is denied by the Apparmor policy:

  $ journalctl -b0 -k --grep 'chromium.chromium' | grep -F

Note that simply starting the browser doesn't prompt it try and read
those files, you need to do something more involving like watching
  Youtube for example.

Bug description:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1942616] Re: Settings Power says high hardware temperature

2024-04-04 Thread Mario Limonciello
Anyone still affected by this, can I please ask you to check the 0.21
release? It's been uploaded to Noble. I've also got it backported on a
PPA that can be used on Jammy or Mantic:

https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/ppd

After upgrading if you're seeing this message still, can you please
gather the value of "/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo" at
the same time as the problem?

If that is set then this isn't the "fault" of power-profiles-daemon but
rather the hardware, kernel, or other software.

However the "reason" string emitted by power-profiles-daemon might need
some improvements.
