[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063147] Re: No lower VRR range for display

2024-04-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Are you:

(a) experiencing a black screen like
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3419 ?
(b) commenting on a lack of options in Settings?
(c) commenting only on the build config (-Dlibdisplay_info=disabled)?
(d) experiencing some other problem?

If true then it sounds like the entire VRR feature should be
automatically disabled when it's missing(?)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2024377] Re: Adsys can't fetch GPOs

2024-04-22 Thread Eric Reiss
ALL, I am also interested in this. Have the same problems. sssd
install worked and Active Directory user login to Ubuntu 22.04.06 LTS
fine. But then adsys broke it and had to disable with pam-auth-update.
We would like to be able to use the extended GPOs from adsys. Wondering
about when it might be released.

On Ubuntu 22.04, I've followed the Wiki tutorial and verified all

installed I can't fetch GPOs. In this version the error is:

It happens when using "adsysctl update -m" or "adsysctl update
  usern...@domain.com.br /tmp/krb5c_getentId_randomdnumber" and just
  "adsysctl update" too.

I've upgrade the machine to 22.10 and the error changed to:

Public bug reported:

i've been investigating bugs of the gstreamer backend of qt
(QTBUG-122424, QTBUG-122423). it seems that we run into a pulseaudio bug
that has been fixed in pulseaudio-17.

it would be great if this patch could be backported to the pulseaudio 16-based
packages:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037015] Re: Screen corruption of webkit2gtk apps in X11 on Raspberry Pi, such as during install

2024-04-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The plan is to SRU since the installer is not the only app affected.

It's non-fatal, 23.10 was released with the same bug. But I expect to
have it fixed in time for 24.04.1

Bug description:
During the initial configuration of the Ubuntu Desktop for Raspberry
Pi (the oem-config process, derived from ubiquity), on the Mantic beta
images, after the various pages of information have been filled out
and the process moves onto configuration, the "slide deck" that is
usually displayed during the process appeared corrupted as if a
horizontal stride were incorrectly set somewhere.

I'm attached a photo of the screen (as, while I could take a
screenshot during the process, it evidently wasn't saved somewhere
  persistent).

I originally thought this might be a regression of LP: #1924251 as the
corruption in the window looks very similar (incorrect horizontal
stride causing "banding"), but I tested the embedded browser (via the
help system) after completing setup and it worked perfectly so that's
  *probably* unrelated.

Title:
Invalid escape sequences in regexes when installing gedit

Status in gedit package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On a clean install of the 24.04 beta, if you do a "sudo apt install
gedit", you get the following messages at the end of the install:

  /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gedit/plugins/externaltools/library.py:212:
SyntaxWarning: invalid escape sequence '\-'
RE_KEY = re.compile('^([a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z0-9_.\-]*)(\[([a-zA-Z_@]+)\])?$')

SyntaxWarning: invalid escape sequence '\s'
match = re.match('?%s\s*' % self.REG_GROUP, tokens)

So there are 2 issues with regexes.

Bug #2055010 reports the first of these, but not the second, and it
also reports a different issue as "the huger problem" (one that I
can't reproduce). I hope I'm making the right call in opening a new
bug report specifically for these regex issues.

  Some more details:
  - on the clean install, I did apply all available updates before trying to
install gedit
  - you can also reproduce this issue from the live ("try ubuntu") environment

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2053110] Re: openjdk-8 402 fails to install in focal, jammy, mantic on i386

2024-04-22 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi Vladimir, rmadison says it’s fixed now and it’s available for i386
again, so I undid the workaround addition.

I’ve just uploaded 8u412, but I’ve re-enabled tests for Debian. Due to
your situation with the i386 packages, you’ll have to regenerate
d/control on noble to get the i386 exclusion (I hope I got the syntax,
with both architecture and profile specification, right).

libgbm.so.1 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgbm.so.1 (0x7fd3deade000)

2024-04-22 Thread Lloyd Kvam
I think this is the line you (AND I) want to see
libgbm.so.1 => /opt/amdgpu/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgbm.so.1
(0x7f5edb3a8000)

Thanks. I looked past that.

I had an old amdgpu library that had been locally installed gumming up
the works.

I have removed the old amdgpu packages and am close to working normally.

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction.

The dpkg --status output is more readable

# dpkg --status libgbm1
Package: libgbm1
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: libs
Installed-Size: 148
Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers
Architecture: amd64
Multi-Arch: same
Source: mesa
Version: 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.34), libdrm2 (>= 2.4.75), libexpat1 (>= 2.0.1),
libwayland-server0 (>= 1.15.0), libxcb-randr0
Description: generic buffer management API -- runtime
This package contains the GBM buffer management library. It provides a
mechanism for allocating buffers for graphics rendering tied to Mesa.
 .
GBM is intended to be used as a native platform for EGL on drm or openwfd.
Homepage: https://mesa3d.org/
Original-Maintainer: Debian X Strike Force

My guess is that a dependency between libwebkit2gtk and libgbm1 was not
configured into the package management configuration.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060693] Re: No welcome/login sound on Ubuntu desktop

2024-04-22 Thread Steve Langasek
recent discussion out-of-band suggested this might have been a rpi-
specific failure, is that accurate?

Title:
No welcome/login sound on Ubuntu desktop

Status in libcanberra package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Under the Ubuntu desktop for Raspberry Pi, for several recent
releases, the startup sound from the Yaru sound theme has failed to
play both at the initial setup (from oem-config, where it used to play
just before language selection), and at the greeter.

This worked in Jammy (22.04), but on at least mantic (23.10) and the
forthcoming noble (24.04) (and possibly earlier), this has failed.
It's not due to a crash in canberra-gtk-play (used to play the sound).
The only hint that something has failed appears in the oem-config.log:

Failed to play sound: Not available

Unfortunately there's nothing else in the log that hints at why
  canberra-gtk-play is failing.

There are several similar bug report, but I doubt they are related
given their age (e.g. LP: #1002114 relates to ubuntu 12.04 which had a
very different sound stack and predates the preinstalled desktop
  images).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037015] Re: Screen corruption of slides during install on Raspberry Pi

2024-04-22 Thread Steve Langasek
This is targeted to 24.04 and marked as 'in progress' but is definitely
not landing before 24.04 GA on Thursday. What is the overall plan here?
should this go to SRU? (It can, but in that case doesn't benefit users
wrt the corruption issue in the *installer* until 24.04.1.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063143] [NEW] Frequent boot to black display

2024-04-22 Thread theofficialgman
Public bug reported:

Hardware: AMD Framework 13
OS: Ubuntu Noble 24.04
DE: Plasma Wayland
BIOS: version 3.03 and 3.05 (latest new release)
Kernel: 6.8.0-31-generic #31-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat Apr 20 00:40:06 UTC
2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This issue started about 2-3 weeks ago I believe around the time that
Ubuntu updated Noble to linux kernel 6.8 and linux firmware packages.
This issue may not be a kernel regression but instead a wayland
regression but I am not certain and looking for help.

The issue is that on boot the (internal laptop and external displays if
connected) are black but backlight is lit. I am able to boot into
recovery mode without issue since the graphics drivers are not loaded in
that case (only amd framebuffer driver and userspace mesa llvmpipe).
Cold boot from OFF seems to be the most common case for this issue and
it happens about 50-75% of the time from there. I have to force power
the device off and try again in this case. I don't know how to get
proper bootlogs from the previous boot when this is the case since
/var/log only seems to contain logs from the current boot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063128] Re: Upgrade from mantic to noble shows a debconf prompt

2024-04-22 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
This has never been a problem in previous upgrades, so something in
jackd2 must've changed in the debian packaging. We don't maintain this
in Ubuntu but rely on syncs from Debian. Furthermore, we usually force
this in when upgrading, so I'm surprised this is even happening. Perhaps
we can add it as a quirk for `ubuntu-release-upgrader` to help with?

quickly get prompted by jackd2 asking `Enable realtime process priority?`

This can be avoided with `export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive`,
that's why it didn't show up in the CI, but we can't expect users to
  rely on this.

I've attached a screenshot of the prompt, that contains more details

gnucash also suffers from the same problem

gnucash: symbol lookup error: /lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/libwebkit2gtk-4.0.so.37: undefined symbol:

This gets more critical for me personally. There are alternatives for
handling email. I have no easy replacement for gnucash.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063128] [NEW] Upgrade from mantic to noble shows a debconf prompt

2024-04-22 Thread Skia
Public bug reported:

Reproducer:

* Run Ubuntu Studio Mantic in a VM
* Run `do-release-upgrade -d` to upgrade it to Noble
* After the package download phase, the packages upgrade starts, and you
quickly get prompted by jackd2 asking `Enable realtime process priority?`

This can be avoided with `export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive`, that's
why it didn't show up in the CI, but we can't expect users to rely on
this.

I've attached a screenshot of the prompt, that contains more details on
what exactly is asked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2062916] Re: evolution has undefined symbol in newest libwebkit2gtk

2024-04-22 Thread Viraniac
I noticed this issue as well. But I will like to tell that its not due
to mesa. I have verified that libgbm provided by mesa does have the
function. In my case I am running mali drivers on one of my SBCs and its
the libmali.so file that provides libgbm.so for me. The libmali.so file
lacked the gbm_bo_create_with_modifiers2 function. I created a shim
library based on the code from XWayland that solved the problem for me.

The code for shim library can be find here -
https://github.com/viraniac/mali-
debs/blob/783569da2c73485db24c54ce4d7d0813d308f2a5/noble/arm64/VIM4/wayland/src/gbm_bo_create_with_modifiers2.c

SMB shares and other GVFS mounted network locations are not visible in
the Open/Save file window.

If I try to manually navigate to the files under `/run/user//gvfs/`
I'm getting a 'Permission denied' error.

If I open the file directly from Nautilus using right-click 'Open With',
instead I get the attached error.

Title:
LibreOffice from Ubuntu Store/snaps broken GNOME integration for
  remote smb shares

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:

  Release: 21.04

  3) What I expected to happen is using any version of LibreOffice snaps from
Ubuntu Software app (i.e. https://snapcraft.io/libreoffice ) works as it does
as if I used the default install of libreoffice. Specifically, when I open the
GNOME Files program via the icon on the bar on the left, I have an smb share
already added via "Other Locations". When I use the default libreoffice install
version as per below, when I attempt to open a file in Libreoffice Calc, the
share is visible and I'm able to open files, edit, save, close, etc.:
  apt-cache policy libreoffice
  libreoffice:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 1:7.1.6-0ubuntu0.21.04.1
Version table:

   1:7.1.2~rc2-0ubuntu2 500
  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hirsute/universe amd64
Packages

  4) However, when I completely remove all things libreoffice-* via
command line, then install the snap version, the smb share is not
  visible.

It's confirmed all packages associated with default install are
removed, and only the snap is installed. I've tried completely
removing each snap and trying a different version (e.g. stable,
candidate, edge) but it's the same problem.

I'm guessing it's something borked with the libreoffice-gnome
integration between the snap and the GNOME environment but that's a
  wild guess.

I tried the snap package as the default install Draw kept crashing
opening a particular file, and was hoping to work around it by
  installing later snap version.

WORKAROUND: Use default install of LibreOffice.

myself, because my computer is a personal one. Hard reset, same error,
Ctrl+Alt+F3, sudo apt reinstall gdm3. Obviously. I needed to finish
the update with dpkg. While dpkg was upgrading, it printed an error
  message for every WiFi connection:

„[Failed] Failed to migrate [I do not remember, something with
  /etc/netplan]”

It took at least one and a half hour to find the solution on Ask
Ubuntu. The problem was: /etc/resolv.conf became a broken link, along
with systemd-resolve.service. I needed to remove both of them and
write a new resolv.conf to fix the error.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063109] [NEW] Splash screen not rendering correctly on several flavors

2024-04-22 Thread Simon Quigley
Public bug reported:

On several flavors (I have confirmed Ubuntu Unity and Lubuntu thus far),
if the machine does not have much resources, it falls back to the text-
based Plymouth boot screen.

Steps to reproduce:
 - Find a machine with 1 core and 2 GB of RAM, a virtual machine will do.
 - Boot up a live ISO of Lubuntu or Ubuntu Unity.

Expected result: the appropriate graphical splash screen is shown.
Actual result: Only the text-based splash screen for Plymouth is shown.

2024-04-22 Thread Peter Sabaini
Just as a datapoint, the PPA has resolved my lag issues on my
Nvidia/xorg setup.

Thanks!

Details:

Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS

modinfo nvidia

version:535.171.04

I had those `MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled
properly?` journal entries as well, and did not reappear after PPA upgrade

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

Input or the entire screen may freeze at times on systems using the
  Nvidia Xorg driver with GNOME.

  [ Test Plan ]

  0. Set up a desktop with Nvidia driver 545 or 550.
  1. Log into Ubuntu, ensuring it's a Xorg session.
  2. Open a Terminal, resize it vigorously, and type several lines of text.
  3. Run: journalctl -b0 | grep MetaSyncRing
  4. Verify the above command does NOT show "MetaSyncRing" messages such as:

Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events
handled properly?
Window manager warning: MetaSyncRing: Too many reboots -- disabling

[ Where problems could occur ]

Anywhere in Nvidia (proprietary driver) Xorg sessions since the code
being modified is only used with that driver.

  [ Original Description ]

There is a noticeable delay in input while using the native terminal.
I belive it was caused by a recent software update, as this issue is
  relatively new.

I click and am asked for the password. After entering it I
expect to eventually get a shell, but after installing Authd I can
wait minutes and end up with nothing (as if it were validating the
  password).

If I enter wrong credentials I get "login incorrect" and a new user
name prompt, which is the correct behavior.

I get the same question asked when using 'sudo' but there it works.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2048781] Re: [MIR] authd

2024-04-22 Thread Didier Roche-Tolomelli
We decided to remove the authd package in noble for the time being.

The current implementation (in particular the one in the PAM module) is
not up to our standard in terms of quality and what we are confortable
to support in the long term. Rather than releasing as is and having
risky SRUs in the future changing a large part of the implementation, we
decided against this and rather polishing the code, securing it, adding
even more tests and releasing all that as a new package SRUed to the
24.04 LTS in the coming months.

That way, we won’t risk to regress any potential users and we will use an
architecture we are more confortable supporting for the next 5/10 years of the
LTS release.
It means that when we reintroduce it, we will rerequest a new MIR too as the
PAM module will largely change and we want to ensure we follow the process and
quality standard we expect for the Ubuntu distribution.

Title:
  [MIR] authd

Status in authd package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  [Availability]
  - The package authd is already in Ubuntu universe.
  - The package authd build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
  - It currently builds and works for architectures: amd64, arm64, armhf,
ppc64el, riscv64, s390x
  - Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/authd

  [Rationale]
  - Authd is the foundation for cloud-based authentication and MFA support on
Ubuntu and identity providers such as Open ID connect or Microsoft Azure /
Entra ID. This package also enables partners to create their own authentication
brokers.
  - The package authd is required to be in main for enabling cloud
authentication at provisioning time.
  - The package authd will generally be useful for corporate users.
  - No package in main or universe currently offers cloud authentication
capabilities.
  - The target release is the next LTS 24.04 LTS.

  [Security]
  - This is a new software developed and maintained by Canonical. It has no
security history.

  - No CVEs/security issues in this software in the past (There are false
positives. authd is an authentication daemon for Junos and VMWare):
    - (0) https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=authd
    - (0) https://ubuntu.com/security/cves?q==authd
    - (0) https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/authd

  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - Package does install a dpkg trigger on /usr/lib/linux/efi
  - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024)
  - Packages does not contain extensions to security-sensitive software

  - It installs a service in /usr/sbin/authd, running as root. The service has
some systemd confinement.
  - It installs a PAM module
  - It installs an NSS module.
  - Communication between authd and its brokers is done over DBus
  - Communication between the pam/nss module and authd are done over a local
DBus socket (socket activated service), using grpc.

  - Security has been kept in mind and common isolation/risk-mitigation
patterns are in place utilizing systemd isolation features, cache
directory permissions are 0700, cache file permissions are 0600.

  - /!\ This requires a security review.

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package needs post install configuration and reading of documentation.
- There isn't a safe default because the administrator must configure the
selected authentication broker corresponding to their identity providers.
  - Once installed without additional configuration, PAM requests are ignored
by authd.

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The Ubuntu Desktop team (~desktop-packages) maintains this package. It
doesn’t have any long-term and critical, open bugs:
    - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/authd

  [Quality assurance - testing]
  - There is a comprehensive, non-trivial, testsuite. The testsuite includes
integration and functional tests.
  - The testsuite runs at build time. The branch coverage is 89%:
    -
https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/actions/workflows/qa.yaml?query=branch%3Amain
    - https://app.codecov.io/gh/ubuntu/authd

  - The same test suite runs as autopkgtest. It is passing on all supported
architectures. Links to test logs:
    -
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/701470374/buildlog_ubuntu-noble-amd64.authd_0.1_BUILDING.txt.gz
- arm64 tests are flaky due to a Rust regression that makes the build very
slow and timing out.

  - Currently, autopkgtests and package build are skipping integration tests
(because it needs a VHS binary). We are working on bringing it before the 24.04
release with a mock ttyd so that we can run them there too.
  - Upstream CI also includes code sanity checks (golangci-lint, including
gosec) and

[FFe] Update authd to current version

Status in authd package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Authd is a new package in noble, in universe.

This package is not shipped by default, we made many improvements and
fixes in the current version. We don’t plan to seed it this release,
  despite the MIR being approved.

Update contains a lot of vendoring updates, and code changes (using a
C wrapper to wrap around the Go code in the PAM module to fix some
instability), multiple thousands of line due to the C wrapper in
particular. The diff itself will not be meaningful.

Part of meaningful fixes are the default group being added and ssh
precheck API. Full changelog is available at
  https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/pull/237/files.

It also fixes a vulnerability by depending on latest Go and latest
  x/net/http.

This is the code level we are testing and relying on.

  message for every WiFi connection:

„[Failed] Failed to migrate [I do not remember, something with

  built with the ATK bridge, but not enabling it by default;
keep jessie on, stretch and sid and mantic/noble off the list:
please report bugs for issues with the bridge, so sthibault
  can find, debug, fix them

  See LP: #1916327

The alternative is to publish atk-wrapper for i386 in mantic, jammy

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2057651] Re: Rename the ubuntu-advantage-tools package

2024-04-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package wsl-pro-service - 0.1.4

---
wsl-pro-service (0.1.4) noble; urgency=medium

  * Vendor manually on the host as the go mod vendoring when using
dpkg-buildpackage works in a different environment.

wsl-pro-service (0.1.3) noble; urgency=medium

  * Pin Go toolchain to 1.22.2 to fix the following security vulnerabilities:
- GO-2024-2687
  * Use self-signed certificate chain to communicate with the Windows Agent
over mTLS. (LP: #2060548)
  * Simplify the communication with the agent removing the double server.
  * Send the READY signal to systemd earlier.
  * Renamed ubuntu-advantage-tools to ubuntu-pro-client (LP: #2057651)
  * Restrict landscape.conf file permissions. (thanks iosifache)
  * Adds a default 'wsl' tag to Landscape configs.
  * Removed and obfuscated log messages that could leak sensitive information.
  * More robust handling output of cmd.exe commands.
  * More careful validation of the .address file contents.
  * Updated dependencies.

  Fix Released

Bug description:
From ubuntu-advantage-tools v31, it has been renamed to ubuntu-pro-
client. The current package is now a transitional package pointing to
  ubuntu-pro-client. wsl-pro-service depends on ubuntu-advantage-tool
thus we should rename the dependency to ubuntu-pro-client to avoid
having the transitional package as a dependency.

[FFe] Update and seed wsl-pro-service in the WSL images

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in wsl-pro-service package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
This is a new package for this release. It’s only functional with a
Windows agent which is not publically released and under beta for now.

As the end of the beta will be after the 24.04 release, we want to get
as close as possible to the current code level, knowing that current
code will still certainly grow feature-wise once with the Beta user
  feedback.

However, having it seeded (the MIR is approved and security issues
fixed but the certificate one, which has been discussed as minor for
now) with the current code level will be great to diminish the diff
when the SRU that will be needed then.

The impact is on existing non beta users (and beta users are using a
ppa with the ppa containing the current code level).

Current diff is large as the development is very active and won’t
really provide anything more. Note that it contains also a packaging
  change to fix bug #2057651.

It also fixes a vulnerability by depending on latest Go and latest
  x/net/http.
