[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2064077] [NEW] Overridding Left and Right do not work

2024-04-28 Thread Fabrice
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I just installed Ubuntu 24.4 and set my favourite keyboard shortcuts.
I want to use Super+Left and Super+Right to navigate between workspaces. I
disabled the "split view left" and "split view right" which I don't like at
all, and set "Move to workspace left" to Super+Left and "Move to workspace
right" to Super+Right.

I rebooted the computer. Despite all of that, Super+Left still does the
"split view left" thing, and ditto for Super+Right.

How can I get those keyboard shortcuts to do what I want?

Thank you,

  Fabrice

  I've been using Ubuntu for almost 2 years and it's been working fine. I use a
KVM switch (built in Benq monitor) all the time.
  Since last month Ubuntu randomly crashes when I switch back to it.

  Or it could be wake up/suspend, I can't see when it exactly happens,
  it's just logging screen after crash.

  I am running: openVPN, firefox (dozen tabs), chrome (ms teams), slack,
  postman, 3x Intellij IDEA, VS Code

  System logs don't show anything meaningful to me or Google and I don't
  know how to get a clue as to what's going on.

  I suspect a new version of MS Teams that was introduced a few weeks ago.
  Please help me

  I cannot reproduce the crash or find anything on the web about it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2064073] [NEW] gnome-terminal display lags on keypresses

2024-04-28 Thread John Broadhead
Public bug reported:

For a few weeks now my terminal has had an odd hang of up to nearly a second.
Usually on the first character I type in a line. I'd say it happens on at least
one out of 5 times. At first I thought that maybe it was something that bash
was doing in the background, but I went to a bare Linux VT (Ctrl+Alt+F5) and
there is never any hangup there.
I also installed and tried stterm, and that doesn't appear to have the same
problem at all either.

I tried using the X.org display driver, rather than the Nvidia one (I
have an RTX 2770) and that seemed to make the problem go away in gnome-
terminal. But oddly, there aren't any similar hangs in games or anything
else, just gnome-terminal. Although I think I also experienced something
similar in the Ubuntu settings app in text input fields. So maybe
there's something in common between those apps?

ACCEPTABLE DAY TO DAY WORK-AROUND.

WHY DO I HAVE TO BEG FOR THIS TO GET

  [Impact]
  The so called "browsing a windows network" made use of an SMB1 protocol
version feature. Recent versions of samba, including the one released with
bionic, default to a higher versions of the protocol which lacks this feature.
As a result, the "other locations -> windows network" tab in Nautilus is empty
even when there are windows or samba machines in the network.
  Accessing such machines directly, via smb:/// type urls,
continues to work.

  The fix is two-fold:
  - introduce a new samba API call that can be used to set the protocol version
to use
  - change applications to make use of this API call to set the protocol versio
to SMB1/NT1 just for the network browsing

  gvfs was updated to make use of this api call, if detected at build
  time. To complete this SRU, gvfs needs a no-change rebuild *after*
  samba was accepted into proposed.

  [Test case]
  * Launch a bionic desktop vm. You can start with a server one, and then
install the "ubuntu-desktop" package. In the same command, also install the
packages we need for this test:
  $ sudo apt update
  $ sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop samba smbclient

  * set a password for the ubuntu user, so you can login at the graphical
console
  $ sudo passwd ubuntu

  * set the same password for the ubuntu samba user:
  sudo smbpasswd -a ubuntu

  * add a simple [pub] share to samba:
  $ printf "[pub]\n\tpath=/tmp\n\tguest ok = no\n" | sudo tee -a
/etc/samba/smb.conf

  * reboot
  $ sudo reboot

  * login at the graphical console as the ubuntu user. Go through the
  first-user-setup motions as you want.

  * try to browse the windows network via "other locations -> windows
  network". You will get an empty folder.

  * update the samba and gvfs packages
  * logout and login again on the gui, browse the windows network again. This
time it will show the "WORKGROUP" folder, and if you click through, you will
see yourself (your VM) and the [pub] share, among others.

  * click on the "pub" share, select registered user and login with the
  ubuntu credentials you created earlier with

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2061079] Re: GTK-ngl (new default backend) rendering issues with the nvidia 470 driver

2024-04-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  When the Nvidia 470 driver is used GTK 4 fails to render most text
  labels.

  [ Workaround ]

  Install a newer Nvidia driver using the 'Additional Drivers' app if you
- can. Otherwise add GSK_RENDERER=gl to /etc/environment and reboot.
+ can. Otherwise add GSK_RENDERER=gl (or GSK_RENDERER=vulkan) to
+ /etc/environment and reboot.

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Install the Nvidia 470 driver on a system that supports it, being
  careful to ensure that Nvidia is the PRIMARY GPU of the system. So
  usually a desktop.

  2. Open the Settings app and verify that all the icons in the side menu
  are visible.

  3. Open Nautilus and verify that no file icons are missing their text
  labels.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  Anywhere else in the rendering of GTK 4 apps.

  [ Additional information ]

  With nvidia driver, all GTK4 applications have label rendering issues.

  They are not refresh until passing the cursor over them, giving blank
  windows. The corner are white and not themed. Passing from one app scren
  to another one reproduces the issue.

  gnome-control-center or files, for instance, are blank by default.

  As suggested by seb128, exporting GSK_RENDERER=gl fixes the issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063892] Re: How to « star » an item in Nautilus 46 / Ubuntu 24.04 ?

2024-04-28 Thread Coeur Noir
What ?

Ok now it's buried one click further, therefore almost invisible.

That may not be a bug but a counter-intuitive « new » way.

So is there a method to add back an entry for « starring an item » into the (
right-click ) context-menu ?
That would make this feature « faster » reachable.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2064039] Re: TB Snap fails to import/display large mbox-file completely

2024-04-28 Thread sverris
** Description changed:

  I use TB 115.10.1 (snap) since today, after a system upgrade of Lubuntu
  23.10 to 24.04 via terminal. All was fine before the update. I use Pop,
  no Imap. Transition to TB snap seemed fine but one the various mbox-
  files were not properly imported/displayed. All attempts to properly
  import it by hand failed. The mbox-file is ~2.4 GB containing a large
  archive of e-mails from 2013 on, yet just ~1.4GB are displayed. When I
  try to import the file, it seems to start but then no e-mails are
  actually imported. So I see not all e-mails in my inbox (the last 3
  years are missing). All my other mbox-files are much smaller - and
  they're all fine.
+
+ Addition: I just tried TB as a flatpak-installation in Lubuntu, and
+ there I can import all data/mbox-files from my existing TB 115.10.1.
+ (snap) just fine. Maybe that helps...

  BUGGY. As no driver alternatives are available right now for Ubuntu
  24.04, now I am having a hard time.

  [UPDATE] Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM
  Before updating to Ubuntu 24.04, I do sudo apt upgrade to update my packages
on Ubuntu 23.10 first.
  [UPDATE] Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM

  Then I found that every program in GTK4/Libadwaita renders with
  missing characters, even gdm (I cannot take a screenshot of gdm, but
  the problems are the same).

  I toggled "Antialising" in GNOME tweaks, and some characters return
  TEMPORARILY. Then I opened a new GTK4/Libadwaita program, problems re-
  occur.

  Besides, problems exist in Xorg/Wayland, as Ubuntu 23.10 uses
  Xwayland.

  Problems exist in Plasma. Texts in desktop icons are missing, too.

  AND I FOUND THAT the "Graphics" Section (the driver name) has been
  changed to "AMD Readon 680M" after the update (I think it is something
  like "AMD Rembrandt" before sudo apt upgrade). (I toggled in GNOME
  tweaks to make the window display graphics info; if I re-open it,
  fonts will be missing again)

  If I hover on the place where text should display, some texts may
  display but icons would not.

  This problem affects my life qualify, thus I need to make clear where
  it is the problem. GTK4? Libadwaita? Graphics? Ubuntu? Because
  problems does not occur on GTK3 based apps, thus I can submit this
  issue in Firefox.

  I tried to open GNOME Calendar and use journalctl to capture logs

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2064039] Re: TB Snap fails to import/display large mbox-file completely

2024-04-28 Thread sverris
** Description changed:

  I use TB 115.10.1 (snap) since today, after a system upgrade of Lubuntu
- 23.10 to 24.04 via terminal. All was fine before the update. Transition
- to TB snap seemed fine but one the various mbox-files is not properly
- imported/displayed. All attempts to properly import it by hand failed.
- The mbox-file is ~2.4 GB containing a large archive of e-mails from 2013
- on, yet just ~1.4GB can be imported or displayed. So I see not all
- e-mails in my inbox (the last 3 years are missing). All my other mbox-

Bug description:
  Fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04. Boot takes too long. Everything seems
  corrent, plymount's loading screen disapears after a while (few
  seconds) and black screen happends. This is the time when GDM3 should
  shows up. I have to wait few minutes and then after changing TTY by
  pressing i.e. CTRL+ALT+F2 and then immediately switch back by
  CTRL+ALT+F1 GDM3 shows up.

  I figured out, that "plymouth-quit-wait.service" took too much (4+ minutes).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2064034] [NEW] Boot takes a long time due to "plymouth-quit-wait"

2024-04-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04. Boot takes too long. Everything seems
corrent, plymount's loading screen disapears after a while (few seconds)
and black screen happends. This is the time when GDM3 should shows up. I
have to wait few minutes and then after changing TTY by pressing i.e.
CTRL+ALT+F2 and then immediately switch back by CTRL+ALT+F1 GDM3 shows
up.

I figured out, that "plymouth-quit-wait.service" took too much (4+ minutes).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2064037] [NEW] GDM session crashes after returning from a screen-off.

2024-04-28 Thread Jon Crall
Public bug reported:

I've written an AskUbuntu question about this:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1511958/screen-lock-keeps-occuring-
on-24-04-even-though-i-believe-ive-disabled-it/1512075#1512075

Originally I thought it was gnome not respecting my setting to prevent
locking the screen after idling, but after discussing the issue on
matrix (https://matrix.to/#/!EJhpCQHHqqcNicfiql:xentonix.net/$kPbn-
fqDZgoG4s6PyQfki8tcSKJUpGH9QrXZSSV_vKY?via=decred.org=matrix.org=ubuntu.com)
I think it is actually just a gdm or gnome-shell crash that happens when
the PC idles, the screen turns off, and then I wake it.

To summarize the symptom. I have the PC set to disable the screen after
being idle for 5 minutes. I also set it such that it should not lock the
session when this happens. (I want to turn on the screen and get right
back to where I was without password overhead). What I've observed is
that when I give the idle PC keyboard input, it wakes to a login screen,
and when I login my windows from the previous session are completely
gone (although tmux sessions are still alive).

I've attached a relevant section of `journalctl --user` from around the
time when I last tried to interact with the idle PC. I believe the
"wake" event happens at `Apr 28 13:42:43` at which point we start seeing
whoopsie messages:

```
Apr 28 13:42:44 toothbrush systemd[1]: Started whoopsie.service - crash report
submission.
```

And then what looks like logs indicating that I was logged out and the
previous session was ended:

```
Apr 28 13:42:56 toothbrush systemd[1]: run-user-1000-gvfs.mount: Deactivated
successfully.
Apr 28 13:42:57 toothbrush gdm-password][60731]:
pam_unix(gdm-password:session): session closed for user joncrall
Apr 28 13:42:57 toothbrush systemd[1]: session-61.scope: Deactivated
successfully.
Apr 28 13:42:57 toothbrush systemd[1]: session-61.scope: Consumed 12min 9.467s
CPU time.
Apr 28 13:42:57 toothbrush systemd-logind[1790]: Session 61 logged out. Waiting
for processes to exit.
Apr 28 13:42:57 toothbrush systemd-logind[1790]: Removed session 61.
```

The time from `13:42:44` to `13:43:07` where I get:

```
Apr 28 13:43:07 toothbrush systemd-logind[1790]: New session 221 of user
joncrall.
Apr 28 13:43:07 toothbrush systemd[1]: Started session-221.scope - Session 221
of User joncrall.
```

seems about right, because it takes a few seconds to go from de-idling
the machine to seeing any sort of display.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2061079] Re: GTK-ngl (new default backend) rendering issues with the nvidia 470 driver

2024-04-28 Thread Momo77
The proposed workaround works for me for the 470 using gt710 card, but I
feel that it slows the windows rendering while moving them (like a slow
FPS).

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  When the Nvidia 470 driver is used GTK 4 fails to render most text
  labels.

  [ Workaround ]

  Install a newer Nvidia driver using the 'Additional Drivers' app if
  you can. Otherwise add GSK_RENDERER=gl to /etc/environment and reboot.

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Install the Nvidia 470 driver on a system that supports it, being
  careful to ensure that Nvidia is the PRIMARY GPU of the system. So
  usually a desktop.

  2. Open the Settings app and verify that all the icons in the side
  menu are visible.

Passing from one app
  scren to another one reproduces the issue.

  gnome-control-center or files, for instance, are blank by default.

  As suggested by seb128, exporting GSK_RENDERER=gl fixes the issue.

Title:
  Xserver Display flickers when mouse pointer is inside narrow
  horizontal range band (kernel related)

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:

  My machine information is following :
  HP EliteBook 840 G3
  Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz
  VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520]
  xrandr -q active mode on laptop display : 1368x768 60.01

  Tried using 6.8.8-060808 kernel (instead of the lubuntu 24.04 default shipped
kernel 6.8.0-31), same issue.
  Rolling back the kernel to 6.7 fixed the problem,maybe there were some video
driver changes from kernel 6.7 to 6.8 ?

  While using the 6.8 kernel I did some experiments:

  disabled picom in startup , no effect

  Tried changing display resolution, just moves vertical position of band.
  (at the above resolution 1368x768 vertical mouse pointer flicker range is
around 640 ( measured running watch -t -n 0.0001 xdotool getmouselocation from
a bash terminal)

  Tried moving refresh rate slightly around 60 Hz by creating a new
  modeline using cvt tool and adding new mode with xrandr, no effect.

  tried connecting external display on laptop VGA port and duplicating
  screen and the issue seems to disappear.

  tried capturing a video of the desktop using ffmpeg with x11grab, but
  it does not show the issue.

  I attached a short video of the laptop display flicker I recorded
  using my phone

Title:
  [upstream] Proportional line spacing under 100 % makes first line too
  low in LibreOffice Writer

Status in LibreOffice:
  Confirmed
Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Using proportional line spacing with less than 100 % makes the first
  line of each paragraph and each page considerably lower than all the
  other lines.

  This problem is an issue particularly with fonts designed for Arabic,
  where the default line spacing is very big so as to allow for space
  for optional vowel marks below and above the line. If these marks are
  not used, the space between the lines is often too big. If I change
  line spacing to proportional 80 %, most of the lines look fine but the
  first line of each paragraph and of each page (even without a
  paragraph break) gets crammed into the second line. As a user, I would
  rather expect the first line to have the same visual height as all the
  other lines. See the attached document and screenshots using Noto
  Naskh Arabic and 80 % line spacing.

This is not limited to English, nor to small values. Here you can see it
affecting Hebrew noticeably at 95% proportional line spacing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2062082] Re: 24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem

2024-04-28 Thread Alexandre Hen
I had a lot of performance issues with nvidia-driver-535 and nautilus too
(installed by default with 24.04 and my RTX 2080 card), but on X11.
Loading /usr/share/ directory could take 10-15 seconds.

Updating manually my drivers to nvidia-driver-550, without using ubuntu-
drivers, seems to have resolved this issue for me for the moment.

Title:
  24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Apologies if I have misfiled this bug - this is a report of an issue
  affecting Wayland in Ubuntu 24.04 beta.

  Using 24.04 beta logging in with Wayland. Nautilus has very
  significant performance issues. Doesn't happen when logging in with
  Xorg instead of Wayland.

  Opening Nautilus windows - including normal windows navigation, and
  the file download location dialogue in things like Chrome - extremely
  slow. Takes approx. 10 seconds to process user double clicking to open
  folder. Attempting to drag folder across screen usually doesn't work,
  or takes a very long time.

  Not very skilled at debugging, but programmes like Gimp, which has its
  own built-in folder explorer for choosing a location to save an image,
  do not have this problem. Ubuntu 24.04 with X does not have this
  problem. No performance issues have been noticed with folder
  navigation, stat'ing files etc. over the command line. It is only
  nautilus and Wayland that give me this issue, so I suspect it is not
  an issue with my SSD.

  The following output was observed when starting nautilus over the
  command line:

  /home/me/ $ nautilus .
  ** Message: 23:43:50.560: Connecting to org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files
  libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen

  After approx. 10 seconds, the folder opened on screen. I double clicked on a
sub directory, and it took about 9 seconds to open.

  I have attempted to show that this is not an issue with my SSD here:

  /home/me/ $ date; cd workspace/; touch foo.txt; ls foo*; cd ../; date;
  Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024
  foo.txt
  Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024

  As you can see, no unusual slowdown was observed.

  Obtaining the following setting for my bug report, I note that the
  'Settings' GUI utility is among the areas affect by my very
  significant system slowdown. I have copied some details about my
  system including its graphics card in case that helps.

2024-04-28 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future
users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709.ReportingBugs.

The package of chromium for 24.04/noble is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-
browser/2:1snap1-0ubuntu2 which is not what you're using. If you wish
to file a bug report on your chromium package, you'd have to file it
with whomever packaged it (PPA owner), as it's not a Ubuntu 24.04
package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063992] [NEW] thumbnails are not shown

2024-04-28 Thread Sergey Ivanov
Public bug reported:

I firstly reported to gnome directly to
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/loupe/-/issues/359
All details there.
But now i see that real issue that someone decides to leave 45's version of eog
on gnome's 46 one.
On fedora on the same machine everything works fine.
Personally i don't understand how version control of packages is done in
release version of os!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2009825] Re: snap thunderbird cannot sign messages with external gnupg

2024-04-28 Thread Giovanni Rito Russo
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS now manages Thunderbird with only the snap package,
this makes it impossible to use openpgp private keys stored on tokens
like yubikey because even activating the
"mail.openpgp.allow_external_gnupg" option in the snap package it has no
effect, which instead works with thunderbird deb package. in practice it
does not recall the gnupgp keys stored in ubuntu. Is there any way to
fix this bug?

  I don't know if this is an expected consequence of the sandboxed

  To reproduce:
  Set mail.openpgp.allow_external_gnupg to true.
  Add external key in account settings. Key is found and set.
  Compose empty e-mail message to self, tick Digitally Sign option.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063985] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device

2024-04-28 Thread N
** Description changed:

  I've been experiencing an issue since performing a fresh install of
  Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on launch day. While my external NTFS USB hard drive is
  visible in the Ubuntu dock upon plugging it in, trying to mount it or
  access its contents gives me an 'Unable to access "2.0 TB Volume" ...
- Error mounting /dev/sda1"' pop-up.
+ Error mounting /dev/sda1' pop-up.

  I was able to get the external hard drive to mount via Terminal with the
  help of an article (https://linovox.com/how-to-fix-failed-to-mount-
  wrong-fs-type-bad-option-bad-superblock-on-linux/). However, its files
  are only accessible by navigating to my newly created '/mnt/Media'
  folder.

  The drive is not visible in Nautilus as it usually would be, but I can
  see it in the Disks app (which is also how I unmount it).

  Also I'm not sure whether this is related, but I get an error when I
  attempt to use Steam's Restore Game Backup feature. Upon trying to
  browse for the desired backup folder (which is on the external drive), I
  get the pop-up 'The folder contents could not be displayed ... Operation
  not supported'. From here I can still navigate to and select a folder on
  the internal hard drive, but not on the external one.

  My external hard drive had been working fine with Ubuntu 22.04 a few
  hours earlier in the day, and it currently functions normally on my
  Chromebook as well. Running 'Check Filesystem' in Disks says it is
  healthy. I also tried out a couple of my other USB sticks—which happen
  to use the FAT32 and Ext4 file systems—and they mounted normally.

  The version of gvfs that I have on my system is '1.54.0-1ubuntu2'.

  Hope this helps.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063986] [NEW] no "send to..." in the nautilus context menu

2024-04-28 Thread frenchy82
Public bug reported:

hi,
In ubuntu 24.04, nautilus-sendto is included in the installation. But it has no
effect on nautilus.

In nautilus, click on a file, then right click on it and there is no
"send to..." in the context menu so there is no way to send a file to
thunderbird from nautilus as expected

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056434] Re: Thunderbird profile not migrated to snap

2024-04-28 Thread Pablo Angulo
Thanks for your answer, Sebastien. I think you nailed it.
There was not enough free space to copy the profile and the profile was not
copied.
I had tried to softlink my old profile from .thunderbird info
snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird but that did not work, as I described, and
it still doesn't.

However, moving the thunderbird profile instead of softlinking did solve
the problem.

The maybe a problem, though, since some people like myself have massive
profiles with years of emails, and users are warned about the root space
they need for the upgrade, but not the space in the home directory.
Specially if several users share the computer.

Regards

Title:
  Thunderbird profile not migrated to snap

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Today's update installed the thunderbird snap and removed the
  thunderbird binary but it did not migrate my thunderbird profile.

  Now I don't have access to any old mails anymore.

  Looking at ~/.thunderbird:

  $ cat profiles.ini
  [Profile1]
  Name=default
  IsRelative=1
  Path=ao6t0qef.default
  Default=1

  [InstallFDC34C9F024745EB]
  Default=ji04wv64.default-release
  Locked=1

  [Profile0]
  Name=default-release
  IsRelative=1
  Path=ji04wv64.default-release

  [General]
  StartWithLastProfile=1
  Version=2

  ji04wv64.default-release is the folder that should have been migrated.
