[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1564156] Re: xenial: invalid opcode when using llvmpipe

2016-04-25 Thread Abhinav Upadhyay
Jason, I checked the sha256 sum of the ISO. It is correct. I also tried
setting nomodeset in the live USB and then booting. It didn't hang then
but nothing really happened, it didn't start the installation. I could
see the screen and move the mouse around but no option to start the
installation.

I switched to tty1 and saw dmesg (I don't quite remember if it was dmesg
or something else) but I saw the messages: "invalid opcode when using
llvmpipe".

[Description updated to reflect state of 16.04 release ISO]

  == In summary ==

If you have an Intel Skylake (6th gen) CPU and an NVIDIA GPU (or
possibly other GPUs that likewise require use of the llvmpipe opengl
software fallback), a work-around is needed to install Ubuntu 16.04
  desktop.

To work-around this, you'll need to:

  1) Choose "Install Ubuntu" in the pre-boot menu (rather than "Try
  Ubuntu without installing")

  2) Check "Download updates while installing Ubuntu"

** Note: "Download updates while installing Ubuntu" doesn't currently
seem to be working. If after installing 16.04 on effected Skylake
hardware you find that Unity/Compiz is broken, switch to a VT with
  Control+Alt+F1, login, and then run:

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You should see the `libllvm3.8` package get updated. After a reboot,
  Unity/Compiz should be working.

  == In detail ==

The Ubuntu 16.04 desktop ISOs include libllvm3.8 1:3.8-2ubuntu1, which
has a bug that results in invalid JIT code generation when using the
mesa llvmpipe opengl software fallback on Skylake CPUs.

When you encounter this bug, Unity/Compiz will fail to start, and
you'll see something like this in dmesg:

  [ 2092.557913] traps: compiz[10155] trap invalid opcode
  ip:7efc940030d4 sp:7ffccd914ea0 error:0

libllvm3.8 1:3.8-2ubuntu3 fixes this issue, but the fix did not make
it onto the 16.04 release ISOs. It will be included on the 16.04.1
  ISOs.

2016-04-25 Thread Abhinav Upadhyay
I am trying to boot from a 16.04 live USB and it is hanging up when I
say "Install Ubuntu" or "Try Ubuntu without installing". Will there be a
new ISO released with the fix?

Low Brightness when started after battery discharge in suspend state

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04 after which i have noticed this issue and able
to reproduce it.
After the system discharges during suspend state and i reboot it after
connecting power. The screen brightness is very low.
Sometimes the decrease brightness key works which infact increases the

Eclipse Freezes, Causes Hard System Freeze

Status in “eclipse” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
During routine use on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Eclipse Indigo (version in
repos) intermittently will freeze and become unresponsive (Window is
grayed-out, CPU maxed out). Occasionally this causes the entire system
to freeze (no input accepted, images on screen frozen). The only way
to recover from this freeze is to hold the power button down for a
  hard reset.

The problem is intermittent- repeating the same sequence of actions
which led to a freeze cannot produce another freeze.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 151365] Re: Autosave doesn't work for Unsaved Documents

2012-02-08 Thread Abhinav Upadhyay
Sure, this is quite an old bug and yet it is still there. I guess they
might be willing to fix it now. It would be great if someone from the
Ubuntu Desktop team talks to them.

Autosave doesn't work for Unsaved Documents

  New
Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Autosave doesn't happen if the document has *never* been saved. It should,
since data can be lost if there is a crash while an unsaved document is in the
  editor.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 151365] Re: Autosave doesn't work for Unsaved Documents

2012-02-07 Thread Abhinav Upadhyay
I remember having a chat with the Gedit developers regarding this bug.
They believe that fixing this bug is not the solution, rather gedit
should not crash at the first place.
