[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060291] Re: [Intel N95] Horizontal line artifact/ghosting when scaling windows to a certain width

2024-04-09 Thread Abram Wiebe
Seems to not happen with items built with Qt. but is definitely
happening with gedit, and system, nautilus, calclator and modal file
window. It does not appear to be transient because I can open and close
calculator and it will still happen. I don't know if that means it's a
problem with gtk, or gnome. But from my loose understanding of Linux
GUI development it seems to be restricted to apps likely built with the
same widget toolkit.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060291] Re: Horizonral line artifact/ghosting when scaling windows to a certain width

2024-04-06 Thread Abram Wiebe
The artifact moves when the window moves, which suggests that something
is either wrong with the library drawing on the surface (supported by
only some programs being affected), or the compositor.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1987159] Re: Drop VNC support from GNOME Remote Desktop in Kinetic

2024-04-06 Thread Abram Wiebe
This should at the very least be a setting, or you should provide a way
to hook an arbitrary screen sharing service into the control panel so a
3rd party developer can still provide an integrated interface to manage
the service.

Drop VNC support from GNOME Remote Desktop in Kinetic

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:

Status in gnome-remote-desktop package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
RDP has significantly improved privacy and performance compared to
  VNC.

I am struggling to find any use cases where GNOME's VNC should be
  preferred to RDP.

GNOME is so far unwilling to provide full VNC options in the GNOME
  Settings app.

The VNC feature was labeled as Legacy in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

There is value in only providing a single remote desktop method by
  default that works well.

gnome-remote-desktop 43 by default only builds the RDP provider and so
far I haven't seen complaints about that.

Therefore, I think we should drop the VNC feature for Ubuntu 22.10.

  Otherwise, we need to:
  1. enable VNC in gnome-remote-desktop 43
  2. Update the VNC patch in gnome-control-center 43

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060291] [NEW] Horizonral line artifact/ghosting when scaling windows to a certain width

2024-04-06 Thread Abram Wiebe
Public bug reported:

When scaling some windows in some programs down horizontal lines appear
that seem to be part of the texture memory somewhere else on the screen.

This only occurs in some programs like nautilus and gedit, but not in
others like terminal or Firefox.

It did however occur when I opened the dialog in firefox to attach the
screen capture.

Problem did not occur on prior Ubuntu 20.04. I upgraded because the
intel graphics acceleration for Intel N95 chipset was not supported.
Thus the system used software rendering.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060291] Re: Horizonral line artifact/ghosting when scaling windows to a certain width

2024-04-06 Thread Abram Wiebe
Some similar issues involve a stripe of corrupted graphics memory along
the entire width of the framebuffer. THIS IS NOT THAT ISSUE. It's more
like a bunch of 1px lines are spilling an image from somewhere else on
the screen. In particular one of the screenshots shows the taskbar
spilling on top of the desktop background by way of a nautilus window.

Title:
Drop VNC support from GNOME Remote Desktop in Kinetic

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Under Ubuntu 22, I was trying to make NVIDIA CUDA work, but I can't because
the only compatible mix of CUDA and drivers results in a virtual dependency
problem.

The latest version of the nividia-drivers on my system is 510,for all
packages newer than this the persistence daemon fails. No problem I
  suppose, I'll just install 510 and cuda-drivers-510.

Only that doesn't work, because apparently though this package is
installed it doesn't rprovide any of the xorg-video-abi virtual
packages like it did in prior versions.
