[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2015-03-18 Thread Albert Pool
@philipballew I'm not aware of another bug report, and don't have time to look
for one at present. I'm a Linux Mint user myself; Cinnamon has its own issues
with Eduroam. besides, there is no 14.10 based Linux Mint at present, so the
14.10 problems don't really affect me.
What I said in #186 was how a friend with Ubuntu on a Mac, got eduroam working.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 463078] Re: Dia export to Cairo PNG causes mangled text fonts

2015-01-20 Thread Albert Pool
This bug affects me too on Linux Mint 17.1 with dia 0.97.2-15ubuntu1
from the Ubuntu Trusty repository. I'll probably look at the procedure
posted by penalvch tonight.

Title:
Dia export to Cairo PNG causes mangled text fonts

Status in dia package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: dia

  Description:Ubuntu 9.10
  Release:9.10

  dia 0.97-2
  dia-common 0.97-2
  dia-libs 0.97-2
  libcairo2 1.8.8-2ubuntu1
  libfreetype6 2.3.9-5
  libpango1.0-0 1.26.0-1
  libpango1.0-common 1.26.0-1

Method to demonstrate: load the file text.dia then export to PNG using
Cairo and export to PNG using Pixbuf -- the character layout has a strange gap
in the Cairo output. Note that output PNG files are also attached to this bug
report, and this problem happens with various other more complex dia outputs as
well as this simple example.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-11-23 Thread Albert Pool
As I said already, 14.10 has another problem.
Go to Network Settings or Network Connections, edit the Eduroam connection, and
go to the WiFi Security tab.
Here set the authentication type to Protected EAP instead of the default
Tunneled TLS which is wrong for eduroam, at least on my university.

It is unrelated to this bug so feel free to open a new bug for it, if
you did not need to do this in past releases of Ubuntu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-10-10 Thread Albert Pool
Aravind,

That line is already deleted if you add the connection with the latest
updates to NetworkManager installed.

If you're still having trouble, probably the wrong authentication type is set
in the wifi security settings. Default is TTLS, but at least my university
(Utrecht University, NL) needs PEAP here for its Eduroam network. The inner
authentication is MSCHAPv2 but I think that was right by default.
Settings may be different at your university but I think it's certainly worth
giving it a try.
When you are asked for the certificate, choose to ignore it (unless you know
which one to specify).

Future questions about this are better asked on a forum instead. This is
a closed bug.

Title:
Please provide option to make NetworkManager verify only the root
certificate of the signed cert chain (WPA2-Enterprise)

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
I have to use a chain certificate, that had all certificates involved
in the verification of the AP. this seems uncomfortable and breaks
design (of at least the eduroam networks).

The (German) eduroam networks are all signed with a certificate of the
corresponding university or college CA, which is signed by the DFN
(german scientific network) which is signed by Deutsche Telekom Root
CA (installed by default on ubuntu)

By opting to verify the complete chain, I have to set up various
  configurations for various locations.

The eduroam network is designed to enable students from all over the
world to log in to worldwide higher education networks with their
  home-university's login.

There should be an option to only verify the root certificate of the
  signed cert chain.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-06-09 Thread Albert Pool
Linux Mint has implemented the upstream fix for system-ca-certs in their
repository packages which can be found at
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/upstream/n/network-manager-applet/

You can install these DEBs on Ubuntu 14.04 too (since Linux Mint 17 is
based on Ubuntu 14.04), then remove the connection and add it again;
system-ca-certs will not appear then if you click ignore when you're
asked to choose a certificate.

With Mint 17 I am able to connect to Eduroam out-of-the-box, I just have
to choose PEAP as authentication method and enter my details.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-06-05 Thread Albert Pool
The system-ca-certs problem has been fixed in Linux Mint 17.

What may remain, though, is that the right authentication type such as
TTLS or PEAP is not selected automatically. For me PEAP had to be chosen
to connect to Eduroam; your institution should be able to tell which of
these types you need (since for example Android also asks for this). But
that is unrelated to this bug, if you know which type to use you can
select it yourself in the network settings.

2014-04-30 Thread Albert Pool
@ Peter Matulis

Comment #17 at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=702608#c17
clearly describes why it makes no sense to require choosing a
certificate for WPA2 Enterprise wireless.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-03-30 Thread Albert Pool
Indeed, the upstream fix did not reach debian/ubuntu yet. Even Sid does not
have it yet, so I guess we'll need to be patient, until 14.10 or something like
that.
I did, however, bring this to the attention of the Linux Mint developers.
Should Mint provide a fixed network-manager-gnome package, it could be made
available for download for Ubuntu users too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-03-23 Thread Albert Pool
In upstream Gnome the bug has been fixed with commit:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/network-manager-
applet/commit/?id=c798c40c5dce3bc6d9b615621cefe59660b5a504

The Gnome bug report also includes some comments by Stefan Winter from
Eduroam (the wifi network of many universities including mine),
describing why this needs to be changed. Ubuntu developers please take a
look at this comment by him:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=702608#c17

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1192210] [NEW] Canon drivers are no longer installable on Raring because of libcupsys2

2013-06-18 Thread Albert Pool
Public bug reported:

Since Raring, libcups2 no longer provides libcupsys2 which means Canon printing
drivers in .deb form are not installable anymore. I think we should bring back
this provides in the libcups2 package like it was on Precise and Quantal.
This is a new occurrence of bug #491205 in fact, since the provides: libcupsys2
was meant to fix that bug.

** Affects: cups (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

It seems the problem was due to mdm not exiting Plymouth. Probably an

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1074779] Re: llvmpipe used after clean install instead of intel

2012-11-21 Thread Albert Pool
I do not think this bug is related to hybrid graphics at all. So far at
Linux Mint we've had various reports of this on non-hybrid Intel
machines, mostly 915 and 945: but on those slower systems it is most
noticeable that llvmpipe is in use.

2012-11-21 Thread Albert Pool
@madbiologist This problem also happens on non-hybrid machines. Quantal
randomly fails to load the X.org intel driver falling back to
modesetting or fbdev.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1074779] Re: llvmpipe used after clean install instead of intel

2012-11-17 Thread Albert Pool
I'm experiencing this on an Intel 915GM laptop, without any nvidia card. And on
a Pentium M, llvmpipe is really slow.
I've also had a report from a 945G that this happened.

I just said I found the fix, but it appears that without modesetting the
intel driver sometimes doesn't load either, and fbdev appears instead.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 882691] Re: Kubuntu can't turn on Wi-Fi on Acer Aspire One AOA101

2012-04-19 Thread Albert Pool
rfkill list says your wifi is blocked by acer-wireless, that's why it's shown
as disabled. Wicd probably ignores this as the wifi card itself (phy0) is not
blocked.
So in fact it's a bug in the kernel's acer-wmi module. You can blacklist
acer-wmi in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to get around this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 871985] Re: The printing panel shouldn't display errors about firewalld not running

2012-02-14 Thread Albert Pool
Bug affects me as well, on Linux Mint 12. system-config-printer however
doesn't have any problem adding my printer.

No crashes at me, just the message about FirewallD when using gnome's
system settings app.

Title:
The printing panel shouldn't display errors about firewalld not
  running

Status in GNOME Control Center:
  Confirmed
Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
WORKAROUND: As an alternative to the printer configuration tool from
the new Gnome Shell control center, you can still use system-config-
printer. To open it, just press Alt+F2, type system-config-printer and
  press Enter.

It appears a patch was added to Gnome back in July that requires FirewallD to
be running in order to add a network printer.
  see: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2011-July/msg09761.html

This only appears to affect those using the Gnome 3 desktop environment, and
this problem is not present in Unity, so you can still add the pinter in
Unity's control panel, but users wanting to use Gnome will encounter this. The
specific error message is:
FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns,
ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.

The documentation in the mentioned patch suggests this behavior is
actually intentional. However, FirewallD is, as far as I know,
  specific to Fedora.

  1) release: Ubuntu Oneiric Beta 2 (64 bit, but others likely to be
  affected)

  2) issue is more specific to the Gnome 3 desktop environment as a
whole, although there may be individual packages that can be patched
  to circumvent this behavior

  3) I expected the previous behavior of being able to add a network
printer without having a package that does not even exist for Ubuntu

  4) I got this nice error message that tells me FirewallD is not
running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-
client and samba-client enabled on firewall.

As far as a solution goes, a documented work-around may be a good idea
(such as an FAQ entry that says simply to install the network printer
in Unity), at least until a more permanent solution can be found.

This is bug was originally asked as a question here:
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
nettool/+question/173836 but it was suggested that a bug report be
  submitted instead.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 849297] Re: ICS - Internet Connection Sharing

The repeated dropping, connecting, dropping, connecting also happens at
me, on Linux Mint 11 or 12 so Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10. It even happens
when the host computer is Linux and the client is Windows.

  ICS - Internet Connection Sharing

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  OS:
  Ubuntu 11.10 beta 1

  Brief Description:
11.04 worked well. With the 11.10 beta 1 release I encountered issues with
ICS via lan eth0 when attempting to share my wifi connection to a desktop. Both
use Ubuntu and the issue is only present in 11.10 beta 1. Everything seems to
be configured correctly but I encounter the computer in which I share the
connection, to be repeatedly connecting and dropping the connection in 5 sec
intervals when attempting ICS with Lan from my wireless computer until I
receive a bug notice when I attempt to try other settings. Everything else
seems to work with Network connections except ICS. Sorry for the lack of info
or logs. This was tested in the 64 bit version using Ubuntu 11.10 beta 1 - as
said before the computers used were plug and play with 11.04.
