[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1848326] Re: [cosmic+] error booting with prime-select intel: prime-select does not update initramfs to blacklist nvidia modules
I'm facing the same problem with Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and GeForce 310M, using an old Samsung QX310. Without these drivers, the preinstalled intel driver works fine. But with "prime-select intel" I boot into a black screen. To go back into the DE, first I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F4 and then input my login and password. Sometimes it takes a few tries. I hope this helps others, so that booting into recovery mode is not needed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-prime in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1848326 Title: [cosmic+] error booting with prime-select intel: prime-select does not update initramfs to blacklist nvidia modules Status in nvidia-prime package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in ubuntu-drivers-common package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in nvidia-prime source package in Bionic: Triaged Status in ubuntu-drivers-common source package in Bionic: Triaged Status in nvidia-prime source package in Eoan: Won't Fix Status in ubuntu-drivers-common source package in Eoan: Won't Fix Bug description: when I try to boot with the iGPU selected, DE won't boot, with nvidia selected, everithing is fine. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1886732] [NEW] Shotwell fails to import and wrongly reports "photo library folder was not writable"
Public bug reported: 1) Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 2) shotwell package version: 0.30.10-0ubuntu0.1 3) a. I'm performing "Import from folder" from an external drive. b. This external drive is formatted as HFS+, comes from a Mac, and by default it's mounted as read-only, which is OK. c. As result of the import, some files (both photos and videos) are imported ok, while some others don't. d. For those which are not imported, the error reported in the UI is "953 photos/videos failed to import because the photo library folder was not writable", which doesn't make sense, as some others were imported. Looking further, I came to found in ~/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log the following pattern: L 3733 2020-07-07 20:47:09 [WRN] BatchImport.vala:1840: Unable to perform MD5 checksum on file : Error opening file : Permission denied L 3733 2020-07-07 20:47:09 [WRN] BatchImport.vala:1405: Import failure : File write error By checking the code, I see convert_error method maps several different error codes to ImportResult.FILE_WRITE_ERROR In particular, lines 124 and 125 map IOError.PERMISSION_DENIED to ImportResult.FILE_WRITE_ERROR else if (ioerr is IOError.PERMISSION_DENIED) return ImportResult.FILE_WRITE_ERROR; But in this case, the permission denied came from the read, and not from the write. BTW: Permission denied has to do with different permissions for those files, so it's ok to not have been imported. 4) It's ok for Shotwell to fail importing files without read permission, but the error message confuses the user, which may understand Shotwell library got corrupted (as on same operation some files were imported and some others don't). A better error message could be "953 photos/videos failed to import because permission was denied to read the source files" ** Affects: shotwell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to shotwell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886732 Title: Shotwell fails to import and wrongly reports "photo library folder was not writable" Status in shotwell package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: 1) Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 2) shotwell package version: 0.30.10-0ubuntu0.1 3) a. Hi, I do not remember what was the kernel that came with the machine, but if it was a 4. etc, the current kernel I have is 5.4.0-12-generic # 15-Ubuntu SMP. How can I edit the grub i915.enable_psr = 0 ?. Are these steps that I found on the internet right? sudo nano /etc/default/grub edit line with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "quiet splash i915.enable_psr = 0” save sudo update-grub reboot Those steps are done, I will comment if it has no effect. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1859730] Re: [comet lake] Gnome freezes, icons missing, graphics corruption
Hi everyone, Thank you very much Daniel for your attention and recommendations but ..; 1. I installed ubuntu 20.04, everything started fine, but it failed again in the same way as in ubuntu 18, before this I was testing fedora 31 and the same errors were presented for both ubuntu 18, 20 and fedora 31, (screen crash, black screen with the message [2658.28 ...] systemd-journald [378]: failed to write entry (22 items, 749 bytes), ignoring: read-only file system). 2. Thinking that it may be a hardware error especially of the micron m2 SSD, contact dell technical service and just have an answer from them I will comment on it by this means. 3. I also cannot get the id of the .crash file, but when I select to report the error, an error window appears indicating the following: "The problem cannot be reported: It has some packages installed with obsolete versions bsdutils, libblkid1, libmount1, libsmartcols1, libuuid1, mount, utillinux, uuid-runtime " Any advice to fix those versions of the packages? Thank you very much to all! ** Attachment added: "crash.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/1859730/+attachment/5321393/+files/crash.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1859730 Title: [comet lake] Gnome freezes, icons missing, graphics corruption Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in mesa package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: ack please.. This happens wither plugging them to my laptop or to my projector which is connected via HDMI. This is how it used to work with windows 7- When I perform the sound test, no sound is manifested. The speakers test does however produce a sound, so it appears that even though the Jack connection is detected, no sound comes out. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1389858] Re: Libreoffice calc 4.2.7-0ubuntu1 not updating references after sort
I know that this bug is closed. But should not you wait for some user feedback? In my opinion the updated Libreoffice calc still doesn't work correctly. As I stated above: sorting is a tool that allows me to do painlessly what I could do 'manually' by, laboriously, inserting/removing, cutting and pasting rows. For me the correct sorting behaviour should be undistinguishable from sorting 'by hand'. Find attached an spreadsheet document that, using the updated LibreOffice, behaves differently depending on the way ('by hand' or 'Data/Sort') a table is sorted. Behaviour is the same if '/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/registry/main.xcd' is edited according to Björn Michaelsen's instructions in #11. ** Attachment added: LibreOffice calc document https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1389858/+attachment/4280240/+files/Test2.ods -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1389858 Title: Libreoffice calc 4.2.7-0ubuntu1 not updating references after sort Status in LibreOffice Productivity Suite: Unknown Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in libreoffice source package in Trusty: Fix Released Bug description: Update to LibreOffice 4.2.7 is causing incorrect sort behaviour in Calc. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1389858] Re: Libreoffice calc 4.2.7-0ubuntu1 not updating references after sort
@Björn Michaelsen: I am reddit OP. I think that distinguishing sorting behaviour by '(not)adjusting references' is prone to confusion (more below). I prefer to use 'old' or 'new' style LibreOffice sorting. 'old' meaning the standard sorting behaviour in all spreadsheet software and LibreOffice up to version 4.2.x. For me (see #14 above) sorting is a tool that allows me to do painlessly what I could do 'manually' by, laboriously, inserting/removing, cutting and pasting rows. Seen in that light the 'old' sorting style is also the logical one: When I cut and then paste (to a different position) a row of cells the formulae which do not use absolute references are automatically adjusted (i.e. a reference to the cell to the left is maintained) and, therefore, there is no need for more adjusting after (manual) sorting. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1389858 Title: Libreoffice calc 4.2.7-0ubuntu1 not updating references after sort Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Update to LibreOffice 4.2.7 is causing incorrect sort behaviour in Calc. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1291326] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 fail to wakeup from sleep
The update to prime 0.6 released today does not solve this bug, the mouse still does not respond on wakeup. But the Ctrl+Alt+F6 followed by Ctrl+Alt+F7 ends with a correct login screen with mouse working, so the session can be unlocked, though some visual artifacts appears (bakground image lost is some of the desktops) and in the top bar of some apps like Chrome. Also there's some slowdowon in the system. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-prime in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1291326 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 fail to wakeup from sleep Status in “nvidia-prime” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I'm using Kubuntu 14.04 64 bit on a Dell E5440 machine. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 892680] Re: PAM with LDAP breaks authentication to Policykit enabled Gnome applications using LDAP credentials
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 781737 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781737 I am a long-time follower of bug 781737, but I have found that I had to take the same measures as comment #5. In particular, groups in LDAP that share the same name as a predefined group in /etc/group are not handled reliably, so I had to create a netadmins group for my purposes when carrying out my version of comment #5. My additional configuration looks like this: [Configuration] AdminIdentities=unix-group:netadmins;unix-group:admin -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to policykit-1 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/892680 Title: PAM with LDAP breaks authentication to Policykit enabled Gnome applications using LDAP credentials Status in “policykit-1” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi, 1) Test system My client is a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x86. It has been fully patched. libnss-ldap and dependencies have then been installed with Synaptic package manager using the local administrator account created during installation of Ubuntu. /etc/ldap.conf has been modified to point to an OpenDJ v2.4.2 LDAP server running on the local network, using ldaps://server:port nomenclature. A dedicated bind account has been created in the LDAP server and this has been specified in /etc/ldap.conf with the bind password recorded at /etc/ldap.secret PAM configuration files at /etc/pam.d have been modified to contain the following, in order common-account, common-auth, common-password and common-session: account sufficient pam_ldap.so account required pam_unix.so auth sufficient pam_ldap.so auth required pam_unix.so nullok_secure use_first_pass password sufficient pam_ldap.so nullok password required pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5 session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022 session required pam_unix.so session optional pam_ldap.so /etc/nsswitch.conf has been modified accordingly to contain the following information: passwd: files ldap group: files ldap shadow: files ldap LDAP users can log in to the client successfully, and home directories are created automatically. In LDAP, my test user accounts have been assigned the gidNumber attribute value of 119 (admin). 2) What I expect to happen As an LDAP user (note *not* as a local administrator), I expect to be able to launch a Gnome application such as Ubuntu Software Center and have Policykit validate my LDAP credentials correctly, such that I can install or remove applications (or otherwise perform administrative tasks). 3) What happened instead Logging in to the system as an LDAP user, I can launch Ubuntu Software Center. Upon (for example) attempting to install an application, I am prompted for my credentials. I enter these (the same credentials used to log into the system), but they are rejected with an Authentication Failure error. Also, Policykit seems to want to only accept the credentials of the local administrator account created during installation of the OS, as the authentication window prompts for Password for itadmin ('itadmin' being my local administrator account). 4) Additional information Using the same LDAP account and credentials, I can authenticate to and use Synaptic Package Manager to install applications without issue. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 517021] Re: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage
Bless you Mucku! My disk is not full but I started to get kernel error messages whenever I browsed with nautilus (Not with Thunar) one particular disk partition (1.8TB) and moving a tiny file from a directory to another would take ages. Removing ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata solved the problem! :-D This bug deserves a fix by the gvfs developers. Thank you again! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517021 Title: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: gvfs My disk space was really full at one moment, no byte left free. People say, that does corrupt the files in the ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata folder, so the gvfsd-metadata can't read it without being screwed up. Workaround: run rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata Expected results: gvfsd-metadata should be able to handle the no space left situation. --- Original description --- After installing 9.10 Ubuntu 64bit browsing and opening folder in nautilus or Gnome-commander take several minutes when there are many files in it e.g. 10.000. Interestingly Midnight-commander does not have this problem. Opening such folders does not hang with MC. Using top i can see that gvfsd-metadata is using 100% CPU and when i kill it the computer stops hanging. I am using the 32bit version of Karmic too and there is no such Problem (although tested on a different computer). Please fix this because it is highly annyoing. Right now i am killing it every 20s with the watch command to be able to work at all. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)
Is the solution described in comment #143 and comment #147 really the correct one? In short, that means dbus always stops on the event deconfiguring- networking, which is emitted when /etc/init.d/networking stop is called. In other words, whenever /etc/init.d/networking stop is called, dbus gets killed. That has a nasty effect: when dbus stops, gnome-settings-daemon crashes and that means the desktop theme is lost. Please see bug #868095 [1] and my comment #3 on that bug. VMware Tools does this all the time (calling networking stop) when suspending the machine. That means you are guaranteed to get a horrible looking (and not completely functional) desktop whenever you resume your VMware session. That also happens if I simply restart the networking service: /etc/init.d/networking stop /etc/init.d/networking start (Of course, because this chain reaction that leads to gnome- settings-daemon death starts on networking stop) In conclusion, this seems to be a serious issue. I wonder if that is happening with more people besides myself and the other fella on bug #868095. I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they automount on startup. An example of this is here: //ip address of nas box/share name /home/hamish/directory name cifs credentials=/home/hamish/.smbcredentials,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 ** note the use of cifs in the lines above ** (The username and password are in the .smbcredentials file) On startup, for each entry in the /etc/fstab file, I get the following in dmesg: [ 70.495504] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation [ 70.495569] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101 But the shares are mounted, and a nautilus session opens up (which is also annoying...) Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an error message: CIFS VFS: server not responding CIFS VFS: no response for cmd 50 mid this number changes And takes about 2 minutes to timeout. This also happened with Gutsy Should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed so that it works? It is related to the starting of network-manager and CIFS shares trying to connect on startup *before* the network is up, and dismounting the shares *after* network-manager is stopped. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 868095] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes on resume in VMware
I'm also having the same problem. I was able to track the cause of this problem and find a workaround that seems to work. 1 - Cause: The event deconfiguring-networking is fired whenever /etc/init.d/networking stop is called. If you read the source of /etc/init.d/networking you can see this line: initctl emit deconfiguring-networking D-Bus is configured to stop working whenever the event deconfiguring- networking is fired. If you read the source of /etc/init/dbus.conf you can see this line: stop on deconfiguring-networking gnome-settings-daemon segfaults whenever D-Bus is killed. You can see this in the syslog: Suspend VMware: Oct 25 15:33:54 ubuntu kernel: [ 4317.379836] init: dbus main process (10856) killed by TERM signal Oct 25 15:33:54 ubuntu kernel: [ 4317.382712] init: Disconnected from system bus Resume VMware: Oct 25 15:36:01 ubuntu kernel: [ .539639] gnome-settings-[11048]: segfault at 8 ip b43f15a8 sp bf96b790 error 4 in libpower.so[b43e2000+18000] 2 - How VMware is related to this: VMware Tools is able to run scripts on the virtual machine poweron, suspend, resume etc. The script /etc/vmware-tools/scripts/vmware/network calls /etc/init.d/networking stop when the machine is suspended. Since stopping the networking services creates this chain reaction that ends up crashing gnome-settings-daemon, it's always going to happen when the virtual machine gets suspended and VMware Tools runs this network script. 3 - My workaround: sudo chmod 644 /etc/vmware-tools/scripts/vmware/network Yeah, that's all, just remove the executable flag on this script. Of course it won't run when you suspend/resume your VM, but I actually didn't miss it. The network in my VM kept working after suspending/resuming. Of course this is not the solution to the actual problem. 4 - What is the solution? This problem means that whenever I decide to restart the network by typing /etc/init.d/networking stop /etc/init.d/networking start D-bus will get killed and gnome-settings-daemon will segfault. This shouldn't really be the intended behavior. So the question is, why does D-Bus has to stop working whenever the network goes down? --- I hope I was able to help you figure out this problem. Meanwhile my workaround seems to be working and brought me peace again. :-) ** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868095 Title: gnome-settings-daemon crashes on resume in VMware Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: gnome-settings-[2165]: segfault at 8 ip 00d5a5a8 sp bf8051f0 error 4 in libpower.so[d4b000+18000] Reliable gnome-settings-daemon crash every time an oneiric system is suspended then resumed in VMware Player.
