Title:
  Erratic ethernet connectivity and icon

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS

  Installed: 1.10.6-2ubuntu1.4
Candidate: 1.10.6-2ubuntu1.4
Version table:
   *** 1.10.6-2ubuntu1.4 500

Expected behavior is a stable high-speed internet connection when usb
  tethering with an Android phone.

Instead, for the past three months, since covid slowed down internet
connectivity on Jio telecom in India, my Ubuntu internet connectivity
has become erratic. In the early morning before 6 AM when I tether an
Android phone to my laptop the internet connectivity indicator in the
upper right-hand corner of the desktop shows the normal three boxes in
a triangle and has decent speed. As network traffic increases the
indicator turns to three gray boxes with a question mark in the middle
and connectivity speed remains decent for a few websites, such as
YouTube, Google Search and some others, but connectivity stops for
most websites. Chromium, Vivaldi and Firefox browsers show the
following error for such sites: “This site can’t be reached.
askubuntu.com’s server IP address could not be found.”

Oddly, in tri-booted Win 10 all websites open reliably 24/7, though
sometimes at slow speeds. In Fedora 31 on the same hardware the
behavior is identical to Ubuntu. I’ve tried changing the DNS settings
in Ubuntu to use Cloud Flare, Google and even the DNS settings in
Windows, but to no avail. On Ask Ubuntu there were no helpful
comments except a suggestion to file a bug report.

Ideally, connectivity without "unable to connect" errors on most
  websites should be available always.

BTW, when I allowed data to be collected for this bug report it was in
the early morning, so the connection was working properly and the
network icon was the normal three boxes in a triangle with decent
speed. If need be, I can send more information later when the "unable
to connect" errors occur from Windows 10, or via email, which always
  works.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 209513] Re: After upgrade, "Update standard folders to current language" threatens to rename your home folder

2017-03-07 Thread Aurosutru
Wow, this bugginess is still around in 16.04. Today after a minor
upgrade this offer to change folders came up. I initially declined the
offer but when it persisted I accepted and my Download folder with 13 GB
of data disappeared - poof - and was replaced with an empty Download
folder. Fortunately, after reading the above comments it seemed the data
was still around and turned out to be fairly easy to locate. The
Download folder was tucked away in Home's .cache folder. A new Download
folder had been created, so it was a simple matter to merge the two and
everything is now back to normal. What fun :-/

Title:
After upgrade, "Update standard folders to current language" threatens
  to rename your home folder

Status in xdg-user-dirs package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Occurs during:
  * Ubuntu Gutsy upgrade to Hardy beta
  * Ubuntu 8.04.1 routine updates
  * Ubuntu 8.04.1 upgrade to Intrepid beta

  After upgrading, this dialog appears:

Update standard folders to current language?

You have logged in in a new language. You can automatically update
the names of some standard folders in your home folder to match this
language. The update would change the following folders:

Current folder name: New folder name:

 /home/jamie /home/jamie/Videos

Note that existing content will not be moved.

WTF? (My home directory _is_ /home/jamie). What is this trying to
do? Will it rename my home directory? Or is it just updating default
directory where Nautilus searches? Or where downloaded files are
saved?? (There's no Help button, btw.)

The only sane thing is to say "No, thanks" (i.e. "Keep old names").
Perhaps that's the wrong answer, but the dialog text isn't clear about
what this change does, so I'd be foolish to say yes.

Either (1) this shouldn't appear and show those paths, it's a bug, or
  (2) this dialog is correct, but the text should be better at saying
that it's safe and merely changes default paths of no great
  consequence.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1350123] [NEW] Startup with iPhone plugged in causes inability to logout

2014-07-29 Thread Aurosutru
Public bug reported:

In 14.04 startup with an iPhone 3G plugged in causes several problems.
Changes to Unity made with Unity Tweak Tool are not recognized after
such a startup, and attempting to logout hangs after the desktop icons
are erased and only the desktop background remains. Startup without the
iPhone plugged into a usb port works fine, as does operation when
plugging in the iPhone after startup.

The iPhone is jail-broken and is set to tether. Synaptic shows only
libplist1, libimobiledevice, usbmuxd and libusbmuxd2 installed related
to iPhones.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1264270] Re: Regular black screens since automatic kernel upgrade

2014-01-05 Thread Aurosutru
Chris, I did update the BIOS to 407 last month after reading the
instructions in the Ubuntu documentation that BIOS upgrades are
necessary even if a system is stable in Windows, which this system is.
The ASUS BIOS update software in Windows was used. I had high hopes
the BIOS upgrade might cure this problem, but it persists, though it has
diminished. Maybe the upgrade to 3.8.0-35 has helped too. Reverting to
3.8.0-33 gives a stable system.

Here is the output from sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode
-s bios-release-date

K55A.407

Regular black screens since automatic kernel upgrade

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Since upgrading the kernel along with other automatic software updates
(about 200MB download) the video of this system regularly blanks after
a few minutes of operation or shows a black screen with white text
having machine gibberish that looks like a log file with seconds at
the left edge. Resetting the display screen to never turn off
automatically doesn't help. Unplugging the laptop's monitor and
plugging it in again will usually restore normal functioning, but only
  for a while.

This sort of problem occurred the previous two times automatic kernel
upgrades were installed and was fixed by a display manager update that
followed about a week later, at least in one case. Maybe three times
is a charm and the underlying problem will now be solved.

  Thanks.

I'm filing another bug regarding a crash that occurred during one of
the video hang-ups when monitor unplugging didn't help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1204476] Re: Xorg freeze or more likely a kernel problem

2014-01-04 Thread Aurosutru
Chris, your comment comes at an opportune moment - I have recently gone
through two more automatic kernel upgrades and each has produced video
instability similar to what is described here. If you have time and
interest, perhaps you would have a look at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1264270 Thanks.

Usual startup with stable onscreen video

  Observed:
Immediately after a system update last week that included going from kernel
xxx.25 to xxx.26 the video became unstable. At start-up the cursor will blink
in the upper left corner and won't respond to any input. Switching back to
kernel xxx.25 brings back the usual stability. Switching to kernel xxx.19,
which came on the installation .iso is also unstable. Sometimes plugging in an
external monitor will produce a temporarily stable video, but within 10 minutes
the system degrades to instability. Unplugging the monitor will usually bring
the laptop screen back to life, but again only temporarily.

I don't have enough Internet bandwidth to do kernel bisections, but
will be happy to pursue this if needed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1264270] Re: Regular black screens since automatic kernel upgrade

2014-01-04 Thread Aurosutru
Upgrading through an automatic kernel upgrade to 3.8.0-35 has not solved
this video instability.

Title:
Regular black screens since automatic kernel upgrade

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  New

2013-10-27 Thread Aurosutru
Upgrading to kernel 3.8.0-32-generic actually made this problem much
worse, but last night's auto-upgrade including the error reporting
software (apport, python files, etc.) along with the Intel 9xx and 8xx
driver upgrade, etc. seems to have solved this. Thanks.

  Xorg freeze

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi,

After the latest automatic kernel upgrade to 3.8.0-31-generic my
Ubuntu 13.04 system again has graphics instability, especially when an
external monitor is connected to or disconnected from the laptop.
Sometime system text messages on a black screen will appear on the
monitor or laptop screen when the graphical output quits. This
problem happened with previous kernel upgrades this year and was
resolved when a new display manager file was installed in a subsequent
small auto upgrade. Reverting to 3.8.0-30 at start up now gets rid of
  the problem.

The system is an ASUS K55A laptop with an i7 3630QM CPU having Intel
  HD 4000 on-chip graphics.

I can help with some technical detective work to help solve this
problem, but due to a slow EDGE Inet connection kernel bisections are
  not feasible.

  Thanks for your help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1239254] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2013-10-12 Thread Aurosutru
Public bug reported:

Hi,

After the latest automatic kernel upgrade to 3.8.0-31-generic my Ubuntu
13.04 system again has graphics instability, especially when an external
monitor is connected to or disconnected from the laptop. Sometime system
text messages on a black screen will appear on the monitor or laptop
screen when the graphical output quits. This problem happened with
previous kernel upgrades this year and was resolved when a new display
manager file was installed in a subsequent small auto upgrade.
Reverting to 3.8.0-30 at start up now gets rid of the problem.

The system is an ASUS K55A laptop with an i7 3630QM CPU having Intel HD
4000 on-chip graphics.

I can help with some technical detective work to help solve this
problem, but due to a slow EDGE Inet connection kernel bisections are
not feasible.

Thanks for your help.

2013-07-24 Thread Aurosutru
Might be worth noting that this is a dual-boot system with Win8. The
GRUB start-up screen comes up reliably but when the laptop has no
monitor connected the default boot into Ubuntu fails with a perpetual
blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the laptop screen. When the
monitor is plugged in, both the monitor and the laptop screen behave
normally at startup, but will fail after a short time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1118465] [NEW] Intermittent tethering

2013-02-07 Thread Aurosutru
Public bug reported:

I recently had a problem with kernel 3.2.0-35. For a day tethering with
an HTC TYTN smartphone running Windows Mobile, stopped working. After
reading the post for Bug #1027292 I restarted Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit with
kernel 3.2.0-23 and tethering worked again. It also worked when running
kernel 3.2.0-33 and now it works again in 3.2.0-35.

When not working the phone said connected but the Ubuntu message in
the upper right hand corner of the screen said disconnected and no
throughput was possible. There was no animation of the networking icon
area, but it remained like an empty windshield wiper area, or whatever
it is :-)

For now, everything is back to normal. Seems this area of code needs
some TLC.

** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059359] Re: Cannot print high resolution in 12.04 - worked in 11.10

2012-10-04 Thread Aurosutru
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise running-unity

** Description changed:

Printing high resolution images with an HP Deskjet D1360 stopped working
after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 two days ago. The print is
stretched about 50% vertically and is black and white, without any
color. Low-res image printing seems OK. I have installed all software
updates and HPLIP, which previously worked.

I understand the issue is known for some printers, perhaps due to the
change from Poppler to Ghostscript discussed in bug 998087. Attempting
the workaround described there and in
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2022997 gave strange results
for onscreen windows, including inability to move them and loss of the
three top buttons, which were fortunately undo-able with the listed
  reset command.

  Thanks.

Title:
Cannot print high resolution in 12.04 - worked in 11.10

Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Printing high resolution images with an HP Deskjet D1360 stopped
working after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 two days ago. The print
is stretched about 50% vertically and is black and white, without any
color. Low-res image printing seems OK. I have installed all
software updates and HPLIP, which previously worked.

I understand the issue is known for some printers, perhaps due to the
change from Poppler to Ghostscript discussed in bug 998087.
Attempting the workaround described there and in
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2022997 gave strange results
for onscreen windows, including inability to move them and loss of the
three top buttons, which were fortunately undo-able with the listed
  reset command.

  Thanks.

Attempting the workaround described there and in
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2022997 gave strange results
for onscreen windows, including inability to move them and loss of the
three top buttons, which were fortunately undo-able with the listed
  reset command.

  Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059359] Re: Cannot print high resolution in 12.04 - worked in 11.10

2012-10-04 Thread Aurosutru
Hi,

Dano, as you've instructed, I've run apport-collect 1059359 and sent to
Launchpad.

Till, I'm also attaching the outputs from DebuggingPrinterProblems,
including cups error_logs after trying three prints, the first of which
was successful at normal print settings. Also attached is the printer
detection section outputs, and a picture of the printer output.

Regards,

Aurosutru

  Thanks.
