[Desktop-packages] [Bug 730311] Re: firefox takes enormous amounts of RAM and swap space, growing until system crashes

2018-08-05 Thread Bzzz
Alright, let's come to an end here. FF60 ESR will finally drop market
share below 10% / IE levels, and nobody cares about performance problems
and memory leaks on marginal browsers when they were ignored at 30%
market share already. It's dead, Jim.

Title:
firefox takes enormous amounts of RAM and swap space, growing until
  system crashes

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

On my T400 with 2GB of RAM / 7GB of swap, the current beta12 of
firefox takes easily up to 1 GB of RAM and swap combined; I have also
observed amounts of up to 1GB RAM _AND_ 4GB of Swap yesterday. The
system (of course) gets incredibly laggy because of somewhat silly I/O
sizes, which creates full HDD load at the rate of less than 1 MB/s of
throughput. A system load of 20/15/10 (2 cores) rapidly occurs.
Moreover, mouse movement gets choppy and mouse acceleration stops
working, keyboard inputs are barely accepted.

How collect that data with package firefox-esr installed? FF 52 ESR is
not/no longer available from Ubuntu repositories.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 730311] Re: firefox takes enormous amounts of RAM and swap space, growing until system crashes

2018-07-28 Thread Bzzz
Still an issue with FF ESR 52.9.0 and 8GB of RAM on Ubuntu 18.04. Grows
like cancer from a few hundred MB at startup to 2GB+, gets laggy above
1.5GB, gets unusable at 2GB. Not killing the entire system anymore, but
I can tell memory usage from zippyness of loading pages and reaction
time of especially JS-heavy sites.

Today, I didn't lock the screen and put the computer into sleep mode
when I went to bed. So some 10 minutes after the last action, the screen
would lock as usual, presenting the blueish unlock prompt (simple
locker).

This time, however, when I returned, a gray lock screen with Debian logo
was presented. I was able to unlock it, and after a fraction of a
second, the screen was locked again. This can be repeated for arbitrary
amounts of logins, it will never unlock completely. Ctrl+Alt+L for
manual locking was also not possible. One can see the desktop running
behind normally for this short amount of time, but of course take no
actions. From a different user and graphical session, I tried disabling
the lock at all, but this doesn't seem to work for gnome-screensaver at
all. Or maybe not for the current session, but that's not helpful for
this acute problem as well.

I was able to find and kill a suspicious gnome-screensaver from a shell
session, after that the main session is completely unlocked. Manually
locking now brings the old simple locker back up. Everything seems fine.

Questions:
1) Where the heck did gnome-screensaver on a KDE system come from? I never
configured that. And after killing it once, it's gone.
2) Even if it got installed and configured by one of the latest updates (I
don't see that from the packages shown above), gnome-screensaver has a re-lock
loop on KDE. Major bug?

with tlmgr, the update tool of TeX Live. I have a separate installation
of TeX, not that from the Ubuntu repositories.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1006072] Re: [gm45] Intel GPU X4500 hung, fuzzy screen or total lock of KDE session

2012-09-28 Thread Bzzz
I'm back to precise, how long do I have time to upgrade to quantal to
test these changes? Guess that bug report will expire until quantal is
at release status. However, I do not have the problem atm in precise,
using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.19.0-0ubuntu1~xup1. Maybe the re-
install of Ubuntu fixed it already for me...

Bug description:
When a brightness, volume, or eject key is pressed on a keyboard,
focus changes in the current window. At its mildest, this has odd
visual effects. At its worst, it causes the Adobe Flash player to exit
  full-screen mode.

  Steps to reproduce, A:
  1. Start playing a movie full-screen with the Adobe Flash plug-in.
  2. Press a brightness, volume, or eject key on the keyboard.
What happens: The Flash plug-in exits full screen.
  What should happen: It shouldn't.

  Steps to reproduce, B:
  0. Switch to a theme where the focused and unfocused selection colors are
obviously different, e.g. New Wave.
  1. In any standard GTK text field (e.g. GEdit or Geany), select some text.
  2. Press a brightness, volume, or eject key on the keyboard.
What happens: The selected text momentarily goes grey.
What should happen: The selected text stays the same color.

  Steps to reproduce, C:
  1. Start writing an OpenOffice.org Writer document.
  2. Press a brightness, volume, or eject key on the keyboard.
What happens: The insertion point disappears for as long as the key is being
pressed.
What should happen: The insertion point keeps blinking as normal.

  Steps to reproduce, D:
  1. In Firefox, tab to a link in a page, so that its URL appears in the status
bar.
  2. Press a brightness, volume, or eject key on the keyboard.
What happens: The URL momentarily disappears from the status bar.
What should happen: The URL stays where it is.
