[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058310] [NEW] Dummy output with Celeron Silver audio

2024-03-18 Thread Chris Hall
Public bug reported:

Built in speakers have alsa driver as sof-audio-pci-intel-apl, but there
is no sound. I believe the CPU sound unit is essx-8336. Many people have
reported similar problems, with the system sound being "dummy output".
My bluetooth ear buds do work. Endeavour-OS and Fedora 39 live images do
work with this machine, as does the Win 11 dual boot, so the hardware
works. Will this problem be fixed in version 24.04?

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2020604] Re: After mesa upgrades, Chrome won't show graphics

2023-05-26 Thread Chris Hall
Well, on one of my machines I installed Mesa from the kisak more stable
ppa ("turtle"), which is more up to date than mesa from the jammy
repository. I was able to re-enable hardware acceleration with no
problems. So there is something in the whole collection of mesa packages
that broke several chromium based browsers.

After today's Ubuntu 22.04 mesa upgrades many of our users reported

We documented the problem in AskUbuntu before we realized it was
probably related to mesa, so wanted to link to that report here:

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1469116/since-23-may-2023-ubuntu-22-04-mesa-
  updates-chrome-wont-display-website-graphi

There are several useful pointers and bypasses listed in that
AskUbuntu link (one being to remove affected users' GPUCache
directories, which does not destroy their profiles and seems to work
in many but not all cases).

Not sure if this is an issue with mesa or Chrome or specific machine
graphics or an interaction between them.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2020604] Re: After mesa upgrades, Chrome won't show graphics

2023-05-26 Thread Chris Hall
Disabling gpu solved the problem for both Brave, Brave-beta and Chrome.
Once I could get the browsers to open up and render text, it was than
possible to turn off hardware acceleration. Any idea if the mesa driver
problem will be addressed in the next update?

An ironic thing about the about://gpu url is that unless you disable the
gpu, it's not possible to even read  the url. A real chicken and egg
problem.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1993565] Re: Mailto: URL feature brings up empty Thunderbird window

2022-11-07 Thread Chris Hall
deb, but the bug seems to have been fixed. So something in the chain of
Brave/Chrome, xdg-open, and Thunderbird seems to have removed the problem.

Title:
Totem unable to play video: "The specified movie could not be found"

Status in Totem:
  Unknown
Status in totem package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
As part of our ISO testing for the Pi desktop, we attempt to play

https://archive.org/download/BigBuckBunny_124/Content/big_buck_bunny_720p_surround.mp4
with the shipped totem video player. Unfortunately, on the current
Jammy image, totem simply reports "The specified movie could not be
found" when attempting to play the file (the exit code is 0, no other
errors are reported at the command line).

I've attempted to install a few gstreamer codecs, in case that
might've been the issue (this was necessary on some older versions),
but neither gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, nor gstreamer1.0-libav made any
difference. Just to ensure the video file was intact and playable, I
then installed vlc from the archive, which played the video happily.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1948978] [NEW] Thunderbird write e-mail window never released in wayland

2021-10-27 Thread Chris Hall
Public bug reported:

If I run Thunderbird (latest version), when I write an e-mail or reply
to an e-mail, a new window opens. When I send the e-mail, it works
correctly and the e-mail is sent, but the red dot on the Thunderbird
icon on the task bar never goes out. If I close or pkill Thunderbird,
only the main Thunderbird window is released by the display manager and
it is not possible to open Thunderbird again without logging out or
restarting gdm3. This is with Wayland. There is no Thunderbird process
left to kill.

I got a case of failing to wake up with GDK_SYNCHRONIZE turned on, and
I've attached the output from journalctl. However, there's no new crash
file. Am turning off wayland for now.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Hall
On second thought, I re-enabled wayland and turned on GDK_SYNCHRONIZE
and I'll give it a day or so to see if the bug crops up again. There's
definitely something wrong about gdm3 calling wayland because after
boot, icons that should appear on the dash only do so AFTER you run a
program, like a terminal via ctrl-alt-T.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Hall
After disabling the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE statement, I finally was able to get
the bug to reappear. I've attached a new prevboot file (after a power
button shot down and reboot). I also used apport-cli to upload the crash
report. It's url is
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/0005b74e-3103-11ec-b60f-fa163e6cac46

I'm going to disable wayland again as the system is a little too flaky
with it enabled.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Hall
The last error reported was on Oct 18 and the url is
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/33300c46-3036-11ec-ad49-fa163e102db1

I've rebooted into wayland, but so far the bug has not occurred. It's
possible that the synchronization is preventing it from happening. I
will wait a while longer and if it still does not happen, I will disable
synchronization and try again.

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Hall
I was able to upload the first crash, but no web browser opened so I
don't know where it went. The second crash would not upload because it
said that the crash was about a package that was not installed.

I edited the environment file and will try to reproduce teh bug
tomorrow.

I tried this with my 2 crash reports but ubuntu-bug reported an internal
error each time, so I doubt that they became attached to the bug report.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-18 Thread Chris Hall
One more thing. I was using Focal Fossa, but it was incompatible with a
library needed for a program I needed for my work (gle-graphics). This
forced me to upgrade to Groovy Gorilla and then Hirsute Hippo. My
problems started because 21.04 defaulted to wayland. I have tried out
Impish Indrie on an old Toshiba laptop, but the upgrade froze solid and
then after reboot it said it could only do a partial upgrade. The
partial upgrade works, but it has made me nervous at this time to try
and upgrade my much more important desktop. for now, I can live with
xorg, which works fine.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-18 Thread Chris Hall
Thanks Daniel. Here's the prevboot.txt file. There were 2 separate crash
files generated when I booted using wayland. The first with my user
permission was generated immediately and this was when there were no
dash icons present. The second was generated with root ownership when
the screen tried to dim (a cursor was visible in the top left of the
screen). I needed to ctrl-alt-del to get the machine to reboot. It's a
Dell Optiplex 990 mini-tower. I will try to attach the 2 crash reports
using ubuntu-bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1130326] Re: No Certificate Authority Certificate Dialog doesn't receive focus

2017-04-11 Thread Chris Hall
This is still a problem for me in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

The workaround above worked for me:
1) add the wireless network using another protocol (LEAP)
the connection will fail
2) now go back and edit the connection, this uses a different dialog which
correctly gets focus
3) make sure you click "Don't remind me again"

Title:
No Certificate Authority Certificate Dialog doesn't receive focus

Status in network-manager-applet package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Using Gnome 3.Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
  network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4.2

  - I'm adding a new wireless network that uses certificates; "tunneled tls"
  - I do not select a CA certificate in the initial dialog "Authentication
required by wireless network"
  - I get a warning popup "No certificate authority certificate chosen" with
"ignore" and "select" (or similar)
  - But this popup is not in focus, the buttons can't be clicked and the dialog
can't be dismissed.
  - I can't proceed except by clicking "cancel" in the partially-obscured
"Authentication" dialog.

The result of this is that I can't use a self-signed certificate, and
  so can't use the network.

When I do go to select a certificate, it filters by file extension.
The filter can't be disabled, so I don't see and can't select my
certificates. Note that when exporting certs e.g. from Thunderbird,
the extension is not added automatically, so it's likely that certs
  won't have an appropriate extension.

Then in continuing interaction, gnome-settings manager segfaults. I've
used the autoreport function to file that separately.

  peace,

isaac
