Bug description:
Ubuntu is overheating at my laptop. Opening youtube on firefox is
  enough for critical temperature shutdown.

Using lm-sensors for monitoring on 18.04 the temp varies between 70 and 85°C
with only firefox or chrome open and doing nothing.
On my old 16.04 with same using, the temp varies between 55 and 70°C.

First thought was the driver nouveau is the problem, and finally I was
able to install by add "nouveau.modeset=0" at livecd boot options,
  without temp shutdown.

After install I disable the nouveau at modprobe blacklist, but the
system continues overheating and shutdown with basic usage.

I have no idea what's happening with the bionic at my laptop.

  My laptop is a Samsung RF411 i5 2nd Generation and Geforce 540M.

Title:
Screen blanking and/or screen lock crashes gnome-shell user session on
  wayland - Ubuntu 17.10 beta

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:

Automatic (timed) screen blanking (or manually locking the desktop)
causes the wayland gnome-shell session to crash and drop to user login
prompt. The monitor fades the background to black (but oddly the mouse
cursor does not fade). The monitor blanks and goes into signal search
and then power saving mode. Almost immediately the monitor switches
back on, displaying the login prompt (note login and not unlock as
would be expected). Thereafter the screen stays on indefinitely
without further attempts to blank or power-save.

Ubuntu artful 17.10 beta. Dell monitor at 1920x1080x60hz using hdmi
connected to nvidia card with nouveau drivers on wayland session. Xorg
session seems to work as expected.

/var/crash is empty and manually running Apport and reproducing crash
does not produce a crash report, as Apport crashes with the user
session. Have included Apport output, though I had to select xorg from
limited options in app and this is clearly technically incorrect (xorg
  session works fine).

Have attached an exported log file of screen blanking causing the
crash. Blanking probably starts at about the 16:04:22 entry, and the
actual crash seems to happen at 16:04:35.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 892680] Re: PAM with LDAP breaks authentication to Policykit enabled Gnome applications using LDAP credentials

2015-02-12 Thread DJ
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 781737 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/781737

Here's a good article on how to handle this for a freeIPA domain, but it
should apply to any remote auth method.

https://www.happyassassin.net/2014/09/09/freeipa-setting-polkit-
policykit-rules-for-users-make-your-user-a-polkit-administrator-on-your-
clients/

I'm sure this is a bug though. It should try to authentication as root,
instead of using some random user.

Title:
PAM with LDAP breaks authentication to Policykit enabled Gnome
  applications using LDAP credentials

Status in policykit-1 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

  1) Test system

My client is a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x86. It has been
  fully patched.

libnss-ldap and dependencies have then been installed with Synaptic
package manager using the local administrator account created during
  installation of Ubuntu.

/etc/ldap.conf has been modified to point to an OpenDJ v2.4.2 LDAP
server running on the local network, using ldaps://server:port
nomenclature. I am not using SSL.

A dedicated bind account has been created in the LDAP server and this
has been specified in /etc/ldap.conf with the bind password recorded
  at /etc/ldap.secret

PAM configuration files at /etc/pam.d have been modified to contain
  the following, in order common-account, common-auth, common-password
  and common-session:

  account sufficient pam_ldap.so
  account required pam_unix.so

  auth sufficient pam_ldap.so
  auth required pam_unix.so nullok_secure use_first_pass

  password sufficient pam_ldap.so nullok
  password required pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5

  session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022
  session required pam_unix.so
  session optional pam_ldap.so

/etc/nsswitch.conf has been modified accordingly to contain the
  following information:

  passwd: files ldap
  group: files ldap
  shadow: files ldap

LDAP users can log in to the client successfully, and home directories
are created automatically. In LDAP, my test user accounts have been
assigned the gidNumber attribute value of 119 (admin).

  2) What I expect to happen

As an LDAP user (note *not* as a local administrator), I expect to be
able to launch a Gnome application such as Ubuntu Software Center and
have Policykit validate my LDAP credentials correctly, such that I can
install or remove applications (or otherwise perform administrative
  tasks).

  3) What happened instead

Logging in to the system as an LDAP user, I can launch Ubuntu Software
Center. Upon (for example) attempting to install an application, I am
prompted for my credentials. I enter these (the same credentials used
to log into the system), but they are rejected with an Authentication
  Failure error.

Also, Policykit seems to want to only accept the credentials of the
local administrator account created during installation of the OS, as
the authentication window prompts for Password for itadmin
('itadmin' being my local administrator account).

  4) Additional information

Using the same LDAP account and credentials, I can authenticate to and
use Synaptic Package Manager to install applications without issue.

Logged in as the LDAP user, the id command returns the following,
where dave is the LDAP username:

  $ id
  uid=1001(dave) gid=119(admin) groups=119(admin)

  Policykit version details:

  $ apt-cache policy policykit-1
  policykit-1:
Installed: 0.96-2ubuntu0.1
Candidate: 0.96-2ubuntu0.1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 118433] Re: mahjongg scoreboard: sometimes cannot enter name

2012-10-19 Thread DJ Dallas
The bug appears to be fixed in 12.04.1.

Thanks for the reminder Thomas. We only upgraded our production
machines after the LTS point release, so we hadn't noticed yet. Some
nice improvements made as well!

For the sake of completeness, here are how things stand at the moment:
Ubuntu Precise 12.04.1 LTS (32 bit)
Mahjongg 3.4.1
Packages: mahjongg (precise-updates) 1:3.4.1-0ubuntu2.1; gnome-games-data
(precise-updates) 1:3.4.1-0ubuntu2.1; etc.

I'm going to (try) mark the bug as completed and close it, as I was the
one who resurrected it in Lucid. If anyone disagrees, feel free to
change it.

Thank you to everyone who worked on this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 978218] [NEW] Account editor renders outside borders of small screens

2012-04-10 Thread DJ Dallas
Public bug reported:

On small displays (such as 1024x600 netbook) the account editor window is to
big to fit inside the available space. Parts of the window are rendered off the
screen and cannot be accesssed (particularly the Cancel and OK buttons). The
window can also not be resized or moved to a position where these controls can
be reached. The cause seems to be that the account editor window has no
scrollbars whatsoever and therefore cannot resized small enough to fit within
these small displays.
There seems to be a regression here as in Evolution 2.28.3 on Ubuntu 10.04
Netbook Remix this was not an issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2011-09-26 Thread DJ
same with me.

I was not able to connect at all in N-only mode, in N/G mixed mode i can
connect but unusably slow. What shocks me is that if this is an issue
with iwlagn or network manager shouldn't this be effecting more people?

what could have changed in the parts specific to the Centrino Ultimate N
from 11.04 to 11.10?

do any of you guys have any work-a-rounds that make the system usable?
have you tried a fresh install?

cheers,

Bug description:
This may be either network-manager or kernel, depending on triage...

I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop.

Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of
  Ubuntu.

However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get
very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss,
very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically
  unusable.

I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar
logs from the T500 also if required.

As soon as I swap back to either 10.10 or 11.04 I get perfect
wireless, it's only on 11.10 that I get problems, this would suggest
it's not hardware or configuration on my side.

I have had this since first installing 11.10 which was a little after
  Alpha 2.

  Wired connection is fine.
