[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2007381] Re: Xorg freeze

2023-02-15 Thread David Scott
Additional info, not sure if it has any relivance but the last update
installed a new wi fi driver for RTL8821CE card. It seemed to take a
very long time to install.

Title:
  Xorg freeze

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Yesterday Toshiba M300 laptop ran for around 5mins. Screen went black and
flashing cursor in top corner then stopped and started again with log in
screen. As duel boot started laptop in Windows 10 and no problems so software
problem. Reseached and found a fix which was putting in file,
1 - Creating a file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf"

  Section "Device"
  Identifier "Intel Graphics"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "TearFree" "true"
  EndSection

This seems to have fixed the problem. I was running System Profile to watch
Temps and also Mate System monitor with Firefox in the background. It did for a
moment give a black screen but recovered so not sure if this was the problem
resurfacing.
Without this being a duel boot I would have had great difficulty identifying
if it was software or a overheating/grapics card problem. Most users would
scrap their hardware if they were presented with this problem. Hopefully my
problem is fixed but if not could you please advise me further.

2013-10-21 Thread David Scott
I now have this issue, I have noticed that is only occuring with the
Google Chrome/Chromium packages. I also noticed that this error resets
Xorg. I have included the Xorg.0.log file where the Seg Fault is.

OS : Ubuntu 12.04
Video Driver : NVidia version 319 (Recommended / Stable)
CPU : 8 Core Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5506 @ 2.13GHz
Memory : 16 G

To replicate this error / known bug; simply log in, and start google chrome or
chromium, count 2 or 3 seconds and whamo, seg fault.

Bug description:
I get logged off from Ubuntu sometimes. There is no error message or
any indication that it is going to log off. The screen goes black, and
after 2-4 seconds, i get presented with the Ubuntu Log On Screen.

There is no clear pattern (or at least if have not noticed any). One
time i am working with Netbeans, another time i am using firefox. This
also means that at present i can not clearly say what package might be
  causing this behaviour.

I am fairly sure the problem lies in 12.04 (or more precise - the
combination of 12.04 and the hardware i am using). I do not have the
same problem running 11.04 or 11.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] Offline Mode feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2012-01-25 Thread David Scott
After reading this entire post, and finding nothing useful. The only
useful posting was the one about updating (searching for the poster,
crashed my FireFox) so I am not sure if this will help anyone.

[My System]
Ubuntu 10.04.3 (server) - updated to generic-pae - running Xubuntu-Desktop
Linux acer 2.6.32-38-generic-pae #83-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 4 12:11:13 UTC 2012
i686 GNU/Linux

The steps I took to fix the problem
Applications-Accessories-Terminal
$ sudo su -
$ aptitude search network
I looked for all that was installed, and what I thought would be needed to
maintain the network through apps instead of directly through the
/etc/network/interfaces file
I found and installed the below apps
$ sudo apt-get install network-manager network-config network-manager-gnome
gnome-network-admin --reinstall

The gui informed me after this install I needed to reboot, so I rebooted.
Once I rebooted, the notification icon didn't appear, and FireFox along with
other applications did start correctly, (ie NOT in Offline Mode)
