[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1801317] Re: Can't move/snap Nautilus window to occupy left or right half of the 1366x768 screen

2022-10-22 Thread Duke
I just upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to 22.04.1 LTS. In 20.04 LTS this
worked as expected, but no longer in 22.04.1 LTS. My screen resolution
is 1366 x 768 (16:9). It does work when I disable or auto-hide the dock,
but this is more of a workaround than a solution in my opinion.

Title:
Can't move/snap Nautilus window to occupy left or right half of the
  1366x768 screen

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with GNOME Shell.
Nautilus does not want to occupy 50% (left or right) of the screen sized at
1366x768.

  See screencast - https://i.stack.imgur.com/ainWP.gif .

Other applications (such as GNOME Terminal, Eye of GNOME, Gedit) are
normally snapping to the left/right half of the screen.

But Nautilus can be resized to the width lower than half of screen (I
can get 650 px, which is smaller than 1366/2 = 683 px).

The first usable screen resolution seems to be 1400x1050, then goes
1440x900. But large amount of [current
  devices](http://gs.statcounter.com/screen-resolution-
  stats/desktop/worldwide/#monthly-201709-201809-bar) are still using
  1366x768.

  Notes:
  1. first seen on AskUbuntu ( https://askubuntu.com/q/1088630/66509 )
  2. disabling SideBar helps (by or `gsettings set
org.gnome.nautilus.window-state start-with-sidebar false` ), but it is hack and
loss of usubility.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969577] Re: Small icons in app grid of Activities Overview

2022-05-29 Thread Duke
With regard to the difference between the app grid when using the default
Ubuntu Dock extension and the Dash to Dock for COSMIC extension, it looks like:
* in the case of the default Ubuntu Dock extension, the elements of the app
grid are centered horizontally relative to the app grid, not including the dock
(and their size is calculated based on the available width); this is why the
app icons are smaller, but the elements in the app grid are centered correctly
relative to the app grid (the left and right margins have the same width)
* in the case of the Dash to Dock for COSMIC extension, the elements of the app
grid are centered horizontally relative to the screen, including the dock (and
their size is calculated based on the available width); this is why the app
icons are bigger, but the elements in the app grid are not centered correctly
relative to the app grid (the left margin is smaller than the right margin)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969577] Re: Small icons in app grid of Activities Overview

2022-04-30 Thread Duke
The icons have the right size when the dock is disabled (as mentioned in
the original bug description), but also when the dock is moved to the
bottom (see the attached screenshot). However I prefer the dock to be on
the left, so for me this is not really a solution either.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1970058] [NEW] Order of app icons in application grid seems to be random (not sorted alphabetically)

2022-04-23 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

I tried out Ubuntu 22.04 today, and the app icons in the application
grid (or applications overview, I'm not sure what's the official name)
seem to be sorted in random order (they're probable sorted, but I can't
figure out how). I think it would be better if the app icons were sorted
alphabetically by default after a fresh install.

I know the icons can be rearranged manually, but I don't think this
makes this issue less relevant.

In Ubuntu 20.04 the icons were always sorted alphabetically (but on the
other hand there was no way to reorder them if so desired).

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969577] Re: Small icon in Activity Overview

2022-04-23 Thread Duke
I tried out Ubuntu 22.04 today, and I came across the same issue. The
app icons in the app grid are very small and the app names very short (I
know the full name is shown when you hover over an app icon, but I don't
think that makes this issue less important). I'm going to attach a
screenshot too. FYI: My screen resolution is 1366 x 768 (16:9).

I don't have this issue in Ubuntu 20.04, but I know the Gnome activities
overview has been redesigned since Gnome 40.

On a side note, the order of the app icons in the app grid seems to be
random. I know the icons can be rearranged manually, but I think it
would be better if the icons were sorted alphabetically by default.
However I suppose it will be better to create a separate bug report for
that issue (if one doesn't exist yet).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1913642] [NEW] Background color of certain tooltips is solid black after upgrading yaru-theme-gkt to version 20.04.10.1

2021-01-28 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

2) Package version: yaru-theme-gtk version 20.04.10.1

For example when hovering over an item in the left panel of Gnome Files,
a tooltip is displayed.

When yaru-theme-gtk version 20.04.6 is installed, the background color
of the tooltip is dark grey with some transparency (similar to the color
of the tooltips that are displayed when hovering over an icon in the
Ubuntu Dock for example).

After upgrading yaru-theme-gtk to version 20.04.10.1, the background
color of the tooltip is solid black (and the tooltip box is higher).

See the attached screenshot: on the left the result when yaru-theme-gtk
version 20.04.6 is installed (the expected result), on the right when
yaru-theme-gtk version 20.04.10.1 is installed (the actual result).

3) Expected result: the background color of the tooltips should be dark
grey, with some transparency, like elsewhere.

4) Actual result: the background color of the tooltips is solid black.

** Affects: yaru-theme (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1876471] Re: Trash desktop icon is not translated

2020-05-03 Thread Duke
Apparently this isn't only a problem of the desktop icons package after
all. In Files "Trash" is translated as expected, with the exception of
the breadcrumb item (see the attached screenshot).

Should I assign this bug report to another package? If so, what package
should it be assigned to?

** Attachment added: ""Trash" is translated to "Prullenbak" (in Dutch) except
on the desktop and in the breadcrumb (Files)."

Same problem with Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 930QCG.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook and Galaxy Book Flex look very similar,
the sound chip should be the same, the Chromebook is open source and
also uses the Linux kernel, can we refer to the Chromebook code?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1834566] Re: Samsung Notebook 9 Pro - Internal Speaker Playback problem - HDA Intel - Realtek ALC298

2020-04-11 Thread Duke Fong
Same problem with Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 930QCG.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook and Galaxy Book Flex look very similar,
the sound chip should be the same, the Chromebook is open source and
also uses the Linux kernel, can we refer to the Chromebook code?

I have the same problem, but after an upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.

Missing indicator icons after first login

Status in unity-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is a fresh install of 16.04.
When the computer first boots, the greeter correctly shows all the indicator
icons in the top right (i.e. accessibility, time, power menu). After the first
login, then going back to the greeter either by logging out or by switching
user, only the accessibility indicator is shown. Most importantly, this means
the power menu cannot be used after logging out.
I have this happening on two machines, both with fresh installs of 16.04. One
is a desktop machine with an nVidia GPU and the other is a laptop with Intel
HD3000 GPU, both show the same problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-07-27 Thread Duke
Not a power user here, but I know when my machine is stammering while
silent. System monitor revealed 45% cpu usage idling on the desktop.
Moving cursor pushes it to 100%. Ran 11.4 previously, but support ran
out and things started to fall apart. 14.04 is only OS on drive that ran
11.4 and xp pretty well. Celeron M 1.7ghz. (Old inspiron 600m) 2gb ddr2
333mhz. If my registering this helps escalate the issue I have surpassed
my stature in geekdom.

Title:
Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

Status in Compiz:
  Triaged
Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
It appears that the workload of low-level graphical operations used by
compiz when, for example, moving windows has increased dramatically
between Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04.

This might not be that visible when using high-end gpus, but should be
clearly visible when using compiz on llvmpipe and to some-extent
invalidates the approach of using compiz on top of llvmpipe as a
fallback when no GPU is available:

  How to reproduce:
  1) Use the unity-3d desktop in Ubuntu 14.04 on top of a non-accelerating Xorg
driver like modesetting. Move windows around. Note peak and average cpu-usage.

How to verify compiz is the culprit:
  1) copy /usr/bin/compiz from a Ubuntu 12.04 installation. Drop it in as
/usr/bin/compiz on 14.04. Reboot. Perform the same window movement. CPU-usage
should be substantially lower.

This problem also affects VMs running on VMware ESX with a software-
rendering GPU. Window movement becomes sluggish, which suggests that
even with GPUs, compiz has increased the number of operations required
  to move windows.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1312375] Re: Problem with resizing borderless windows that are located against the screen border

Title:
Problem with resizing borderless windows that are located against the
  screen border

Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Apparently the invisible draggable area which you can use to resize a
window is located outside the window.

Now that all windows are borderless, when I auto-resize a window to
the left part of the screen (by dragging it to the left border of the
screen) I can no longer grab the left, top and bottom border for
resizing afterwards (the resize arrows do not appear). I suppose that,
when the border was 1 pixel wide, there was always the possibility to
grab the border in order to resize the window.

Maybe there should be a small (even 1 pixel could make a difference)
invisible draggable area inside the window too? I suppose there is no
such draggable area inside the window at the moment so as not to
interfere with the interior of the window (the scroll bars for
example)? Or is there another reason?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1238410] Re: Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

2013-12-07 Thread Duke
I experience this problem on my desktop PC too from time to time. The
workaround from comment #4 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1238410/comments/4) brings back the cursor.

Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

Bug description:
On fresh boots the greeter desktop may have the cursor visible or may not
until mouse is moved.
On a log out/in the cursor is almost always invisible until mouse is moved.
(unless made visible in greeter screen, then visible on Desktop

This is all well good, maybe some intentional aesthetics/design
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687791) , however sometimes the
cursor never becomes visible.
In that case hitting some keys or context menu can cause it to show, though
most times a log out is needed.
(with the removal of ctrl+alt+delete log out this means most users will
need to either blindly find the session indicator or hit power button.

When the g-s-d cursor plugin is disabled then the cursor is always
visible, it the plugin has no use in an ubuntu session then maybe it
  should be default disabled

There is also the possibility, particularly on ssd drives, of a login
with no session indicator. This occasionally combines with no visible
  cursor.

Title:
COLOURlovers dash plugin appears twice and unable to go to next dash
  plugin in the preview window

Status in “unity-lens-applications” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 this morning.

When I open the Dash, go the Application lens, click Filter results
and select Dash plugins, the COLOURlovers plugin appears twice.

When I click on one of the two COLOURlovers plugins the preview window opens.
When I click on the arrow at the left (or press the left arrow key on the
keyboard) the previous Dash plugin is correctly shown in the preview window
(which in my case is Clementine).
But when I click on the arrow at the right (or press the right arrow key on
the keyboard) while in the preview window for the COLOURlovers plugin, I always
stay on the preview for the COLOURlovers plugin instead of going to the next
plugin (which should be Devhelp).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1153934] Re: Some radio streams which used to play OK don't play after updating to rhythmbox 2.98

2013-06-04 Thread Duke
I use 2 different user accounts on my Ubuntu 13.04 machine: an
administrator account and a standard user account.

Playing internet radio streams in Rhythmbox works when I log in with the
administrator account, but doesn't work when I log in with the standard
user account.

used to play perfectly (heard it daily) with the previous version of
rhythmbox, but after upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 which brought a new
version does not play any more. Some other streams still play
  perfectly, for instance:

After clicking the radio nothing happens, it doesn't play the stream
or produces any other message whatsoever

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 859560] Re: Gedit line number margin doesn't scale with font size

2013-05-02 Thread Paul Duke
New install of Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. Bug still exists. I've suffered with
this bug for about a year on prior 32 bit system and I must have larger
fonts. Please fix it.

Title:
Gedit line number margin doesn't scale with font size

Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome:
  Invalid
Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Machine: 64bit Ubuntu Ocelot with all updates applied as of
  26/09/2011.

The width of the Gedit line number margin (enabled in preferences)
doesn't scale with the font size. I am visually impaired and thus have
my gedit font size set to 16. However when I do this and press enter a
few times (so I have more than 9 lines in a file) the margin isn't
expanded to fit the new two digit number. When we have more than 99
lines (three digits), the margin scales correctly once more.

This happens on a new setup with fresh configuration files.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1). Open gedit
2). Change font size to 16 (probably also has issues at other sizes too).
3). Make more than 9 lines in the file.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

With two batteries, when the first battery hits low levels gnome-
power-manager alerts the user of low/critical and then takes the
critcially low action, even thow the other battery is still at 100%.
gnome-power-manager detects and can interact with either battery.

This affects at least karmic, but is believed to affect jaunty as
  well.

  gnome-power-manager version 2.26.1-0ubuntu3

I would expect that gnome-power-manager should warn, but then continue
to move through the second battery.
