[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1926033] Re: left clicking selection on desktop - super large area

2021-04-26 Thread Egor Rudkov
I am also experiencing something related to this. I have a dual-display
setup, with primary one being scaled to 125%. The icons of new desktop
are not aligned to monitor grid as they should and my left monitor
desktop boundaries are far off from the actual display.

Ubuntu 21.04 upgraded from 20.10
Nvidia graphics

Title:
left clicking selection on desktop - super large area

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I left click on my desktop (say I want to select Home and Trash
icons) the selection area is insanely large. I have 3 monitors all
with different resolutions my gut feeling is it has something to do w/
that. I've attached a gif that shows the issue. The selection area
(teal) is me selecting a very small area but it expands instantly very
  large.

This happened after I upgraded from 20.10 to 21.04

I've reinstalled my Nvidia drivers and the problem persists.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1863142] Re: [nvidia] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in xf86ScreenSetCursor(pCurs=NULL)

2020-06-15 Thread egor
I also consistently run into the issue running gnome on xorg in Fedora. Nvidia
drivers 440.82. Although this is on Fedora, but posting here since it's been
going on a while and no resolution or other useful threads I can find. Symptoms
appear to be the same.
The issue is triggered by Remmina and can also be triggered by KRDC for me when
run in Gnome on Xorg. KDE on Xorg does not appear to trigger the bug, not it is
triggered on Wayland.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-06-14 Thread Egor Rudkov
Affects me as well:
- Ubuntu 20.04
- Nvidia driver 440
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super
- 2 monitors: 2k and 1080p

I have a strange behaviour with this one. If I set my primary 2k display
scaled to 125% and position my second 1080p monitor on the right - it
works fine. But if I drag secondary monitor to the left from my primary
one, I get this bug and mirroring turns on instead of join.

Title:
Display scale and layout not remembered when X11 Fractional Scaling is
  enabled

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in mutter source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

After upgrading to 19.04, I enabled the experimental 'x11-randr-
  fractional-scaling' setting. If I set scaling to 125, 150, or 200%,
the setting is remembered and used the next time I log in. If I set
scaling to 100%, however, the next time I log in the scaling switches
back to 200% automatically. I only want to use fractional scaling for
  external monitors.

  [ Test case ]

  - Use a multi-monitor setup
  - Enable Fractional scaling under X11 (from display settings)
  - Setup mixed-DPI settings in gnome-control-center
  - Log-out
  - Log-in again
+ Settings should be preserved

  [ Regression potential ]

It's not possible to set some scaling combinations any more with
  multiple or single monitors.

  - Configuration is not restored at all.

  [ Known issue ]

Monitor settings won't be preserved disabling fractional scaling or
enabling it in the wayland session.

  -

Background: This is on a Dell XPS 9360 with a 1920x1080 ~168 DPI
screen. Pretty standard configuration. I have my DisplaySize set to
  294x165 in Xorg.conf, Xft.dpi=168, GTK font scaling factor 1.0.

I have been unable to find an appropriate combination of settings
where 168 DPI is respected for accurate font rendering, while at the
same time not scaling up the rest of the UI to unusable proportions.
Fractional scaling seems to be the only way to adjust some Gnome UI
  elements.

I still don't get it. It's been unfixed in Bionic since forever. Do I
need to enable -proposed do get the fix? I thought this was risky. It's

Status in gnome-shell source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed
Status in gnome-shell source package in Cosmic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Upstream issue: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/913

  [ Impact ]

Keyboard Layout indicator don't display current layout (empty selected
  drop down box)

  [ Test case ]

  1. Boot
  2. Suspend or lock the screen
  3. Log again with your user
  4. The keyboard indicator should display current layout

  [ Regression Potential ]

Really low, we properly pass a null value instead of an undefined one,
  without breaking JS.

  --

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

  1. After normal boot, suspend or lock.
  2. Login again.

Result: Keyboard Layout indicator don't display current layout (empty
  selected drop down box)

  [ Workarounds ]

  - Switch with keyboard (Super+space) or mouse. BUT if you then logout
on the login screen *when you press the first character* of the
password the shown selected keyboard layout resets.

  - Restart Gnome Shell (Alt+F2 r):

(dnsmasq-base-2.75-1ubuntu0.16.04.2)
  - restated my laptop to ensure clean start

Observed results -> DNS queries are forwarded only to DNS servers

  * If you have checked or unchecked the "Use this connection only for

  * If you have this checked, try unchecking it and see if that makes a
difference
-> no change if I toggle this option. Behavior is same.

  * When you say "DNS lookups" please be clear about whether the hostnames
being looked up are public (e.g., www.google.com or whatever), on your local
LAN, or in the network accessed via the VPN. Does it make a difference which
one you choose?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1781091] Re: notify-send only works the first time

2018-07-11 Thread Egor Tensin
I installed a fresh Ubuntu on a VM, and the problem did go away. I'm
sorry for misleading you. I found out that the problem goes away if I
disable the third-party GSConnect extension (due to be included in the
next Ubuntu, https://github.com/andyholmes/gnome-shell-extension-
gsconnect) that talks to KDE Connect on my phone. Disable the extension,
reboot, and the problem is gone (Alt+F2 & r doesn't work). Enable it
again, or even open the preferences, and the problem appears again.

Several people have mentioned upgrading to kernel 4.8 or higher solves the
issue. As per #81, you can easily install kernel 4.8 (if you're on Ubuntu
16.04, that is) by running

  sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-16.04

If you are still experiencing this issue after upgrading to kernel
4.8, please share your system details in the comments.

  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  * initctl restart unity-panel-service restarts the panel, but the text is
still missing
  * suspend and resume does not fix the issue
  * Logging out fixes the issue
  * Other affected applications:
  ** Chromium file select dialog
  ** Terminal (entire window)
  ** ttys 1-6 (Ctrl+Alt+F1, etc.)
  ** Document viewer (menus)
  ** Software Updater
  ** Rhythmbox
** The dialog that appears when you take a screenshot with Ctrl+Alt+PrtSc
  ** ubuntu-bug
  ** Nautilus
** LibreOffice Calc (spreadsheet text contents)
  ** Firefox
  * Unity dash is not affected.
  * Skype is not affected.
  * Mousing over a button in a dialog correctly shows the text.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6

2018-06-12 Thread Egor Tensin
I had a lot of trouble with NetworkManager+OpenVPN on Ubuntu and
discovered a couple of workarounds.

If you're having trouble resolving internal domain names (like
*.internal.company.com), you might want to try adding something like
this to the [ipv4] section in /etc/NetworkManager/system-
connections/YOUR_VPN_CONNECTION:

dns-search=internal.company.com;

If you want to direct all DNS lookups through your VPN, try adding

dns-priority=-1

to the same section. But this will disable all DNS servers except for
the VPN, so if you have a local DNS server, local domain names will stop
resolving.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 & network-manager 1.10.6-2ubuntu1.

I'll duplicate this message in #1671606.

DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This was initially opened as #1671606 then later duped to #1639776.
Discussion in #1639776 indicate that we need new bug for this so I am
opening one ... Please don't mark this as duplicate to #1639776 or
other similar bug report. We already lost several months and we are
  again at beginning ...

  TL;DR; -> network-manager-1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 use DNS defined by
VPN (correct). network-manager-1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 use DNS from
DHCP instead of one defined by VPN (wrong).

DNS resolver should query only DNS servers defined by VPN while
  connection is active.

  =

  Test steps / result:

  - upgraded network-manager to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
(dnsmasq-base-2.75-1ubuntu0.16.04.2)
  - restated my laptop to ensure clean start
  - connected to VPN using openconnect / network-manager-openconnect-gnome

Observed results -> DNS queries are forwarded only to DNS servers
defined by LAN connection (this is wrong / connection not working at
  all)

  - "killall dnsmasq"
  - dnsmasq get automatically restarted by system

Observed results -> most of the the queries are forwarded to DNS
servers defined by VPN, but lot of queries get forwarded to DNS
servers defined by LAN connection (this is still wrong / DNS leaks,
attacker can hijack connection even if VPN is enabled)

  - I downgraded back network-manager to 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 (dnsmasq-base
stay same)
  - restated my laptop to ensure clean test
  - connected to same VPN using openconnect

Observed results -> DNS queries are forwarded only to DNS servers
defined by VPN connection. There are no leaks to LAN DNS server (this
  is correct behavior).

  =

Paul Smith requested additional details in #1639776. Here are:

  * If you're using IPv4 vs. IPv6
-> IPv4 only. I have IPv6 set to ignore on all network definition (lan / wifi
/vpn)

  * If you have checked or unchecked the "Use this connection only for
resources on its network"
-> unchecked on all nw definition

  * If you have this checked, try unchecking it and see if that makes a
difference
-> no change if I toggle this option. Behavior is same.

  * When you say "DNS lookups" please be clear about whether the hostnames
being looked up are public (e.g., www.google.com or whatever), on your local
LAN, or in the network accessed via the VPN. Does it make a difference which
one you choose?
  -> No difference.

  * Are you using fully-qualified hostnames, or relying on the DNS domain
search path? Does it make a difference if you do it differently?
-> I normaly use FQDN due to nature of HTTPs cert validation. I don't see
difference when I try same using hostname + domain search.

  =

I am using openconnect (cisco) and openvpn. Test result are by using
openconnect but I saw same behaviour also while using openvpn.

  =

  Thanks

  Lukas

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1620170] [NEW] wake from suspend fails when using discrete videocard on hybrid system

2016-09-04 Thread Egor
Public bug reported:

My laptop (ASUS K501UW-AB78) fails to resume from suspend when using
Nvidia driver and Nvidia videocard is active. The problem does not arise
when I switch to built-in video using nvidia prime or when using nouveau
driver.

Since this appears to only be relevant for hybrid systems, I file the
bug under nvidia-prime; please move as appropriate.

what I expect to happen: when system is in suspend and I open laptop lid or
press any button, the laptop resumes and brings up the lock screen.

what actually happens: when system is in suspend and I open laptop lid
or press any button, the laptop awakens (power and wifi LEDs turn on);
the screen gets backlit but remains black. I cannot switch to terminal
session via Ctrl+Alt+F1. I am unable do anything blindly (for example,
type in the password and try to turn off the laptop via keyboard
combinations).

to replicate the problem: install ubuntu 16.04, install nvidia driver
via "additional drivers" settings dialog. Open nvidia-settings, open
PRIME tab, switch to NVIDIA (performance mode), log out, log in, suspend
the pc, press any button.

Tested on: Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 LTS x64 and Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon x64; in both
cases kernel 4.4.
Driver version: 361.42, nvidia-prime v0.82. I tried to manually install 367.44
driver, but both systems failed to load with that one (unlike my desktop).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1166807] Re: chromium menu bar for unity needs reimplementing

2013-10-22 Thread Egor
I guess, I encountered a problem, closely related to this bug. I use KDE
hence no unity or gnome launched. Since I upgraded to saucy, chromium
got a one-pixel menu bar at the very top of the window. If I use system
window border, it is invisible (because it has the same color as my
border), but still active. If I use chromium window border, I can see a
one-pixel line just above the window. In both cases this menu is
clickable, I mean, if I click in some correct place in the left side of
this bar, a menu appears, and by using keyboard arrows or by moving
mouse left or right I can explore this menu — File, View, Bookmarks…
just a regular menu.

The terrible thing is: I cannot move my mouse to the top of the screen,
taking care only about its horizontal position, I have to bump the top
of the screen, then carefully move the mouse some pixels down, and then
click on the tab to show or close it (middle mouse button). So, the idea
of chromium's developers to gain infinite height (in terms of Fitts's
law) for the tabs is buried, since useless one-pixel menu resides on the
screen.

Is it possible to uninstall some package to get rid of this menu since I
do not use GNOME or unity?

Nevertheless, it seems much like a bug for me&friends, since it appeared
after just `apt-get dist-upgrade` and not some `apt-get install`.

The global menu bar in Chromium is already a hack for Unity. It
