[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1663060] Re: Add a title field to snap metadata

2017-02-14 Thread James Tait
For reference Click Package Index ("the store") already has a title
field. It is returned by default in the details and search endpoints:

$ curl -s
'https://search.apps.ubuntu.com/api/v1/snaps/search?q=ubuntu-clock-app=1'
-H 'X-Ubuntu-Series: 16' | jq .
{
  "_embedded": {
"clickindex:package": [
  {
"publisher": "Ubuntu Core App Developers",
"ratings_average": 0,
"name": "ubuntu-clock-app.ubuntucoredev",
"package_name": "ubuntu-clock-app",
"title": "Clock",
"icon_url":
"https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/icon_1.png;,
"price": 0,
"summary": "Ubuntu Clock application for the Unity desktop",
"content": "application",
"alias": "ubuntu-clock-app",
"version": "3.6+snap3",
"_links": {
  "self": {
"href":
"https://search.apps.ubuntu.com/api/v1/snaps/details/ubuntu-clock-app;
  }
},
"architecture": [
  "amd64"
],
"prices": {},
"plugs": [
  "opengl",
  "unity7"
],
"snap_id": "vjQhIxU28Zszo6iEjbbrmosRqSpBq4GD",
"slots": [],
"revision": 5
  }
]

And snapd 2.21 at least requests it explicitly:

[14/Feb/2017:06:57:57 +] "GET
/api/v1/snaps/search?confinement=strict%2Cclassic=anon_download_url%2Carchitecture%2Cchannel%2Cdownload_sha3_384%2Csummary%2Cdescription%2Cdeltas%2Cbinary_filesize%2Cdownload_url%2Cepoch%2Cicon_url%2Clast_updated%2Cpackage_name%2Cprices%2Cpublisher%2Cratings_average%2Crevision%2Cscreenshot_urls%2Csnap_id%2Csupport_url%2Ctitle%2Ccontent%2Cversion%2Corigin%2Cdeveloper_id%2Cprivate%2Cconfinement=appear.in
 HTTP/1.1" 200 2454 "-" "snapd/2.21 (series 16; classic) ubuntu/16.04 (amd64)"

I'd have to check where the value for that field is coming from though -
whether it's automatically extracted from somewhere or provided by the
developer in the web UI.

  Add a title field to snap metadata

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:

Status in snapcraft package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in snapd package in Ubuntu:

Status in snapd-glib package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  There are currently three naming fields in the snap metadata:
  name: a codename for the snap (can't contain spaces)
  summary: a one-line description of the snap
  description: A multi-line description of the snap

  For example for the Ubuntu calculator app we have:
  name: ubuntu-calculator-app
  summary: Ubuntu Calculator app
  description: The calculator app for all Ubuntu devices.

  What is missing is the 'title' field from the store - this is more
  appropriate to use in a graphical system to display this. For example,
  this should be "Calculator" for ubuntu-calculator-app.

  I think the following needs to be done:
  1. A title field needs to be specified in the .snap metadata.
  2. snapd needs to return this field for local snaps from the metadata, and
return the store field for searches.
  3. The store should take the title field from the metadata when uploading and
automatically set it in the store.
  4. Snapcraft needs to have updated documentation / prompt the user to enter
this field.
  5. snapd-glib needs support for this field.
  6. GNOME Software should use this field where appropriate.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1252106] [NEW] WiFi connections not re-established

2013-11-17 Thread James Tait
Public bug reported:

If I boot my phone at home, it happily connects to my wireless network.
If I leave home and have Cellular Data enabled, it will establish a 3G
connection. If I then return home, it remains on 3G instead of switching
back to the wireless network. Even if I disable Cellular data, the
wireless connection is not re-established.

I have tried restarting network-manager and wpasupplicant, to no avail.
The only way I have been able to get it to reconnect to the wireless
network is to reboot the phone. The logs suggest that the wireless
authentication fails, but the reboot doesn't prompt for new credentials.

Right. But which debug packages do I need to install to get that? I
already have xserver-xorg-core-dbg and xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg and
I don't see a xserver-xorg-xmir-dbg package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102001] Re: CUPS recommends incorrect driver for Samsung ML-1670

2013-03-06 Thread James Tait
This is great news! Unfortunately I'm now ~10,000km from the printer, so
I can't test this myself.

Now, how do we go about fixing the recommendation?

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  After login, it's very possible the screen will appear corrupted and show
artifacts of a previous session. This is a security and privacy concern.

  [Test Case]
  Simple as logging in several times. It's highly reproducable (over 50% in my
tests).

  [Regression Potential]
  Seems low. We had this same patch in 12.04, but it got accidentally dropped
for 12.10.

  [Original Report]
  With the latest updates im getting corrupted graphics - images after the
login until the unity launcher - desktop appears and this is happening in
every system restart - relogin.

  Im attaching a screenshot of what im getting , it looks like its a
  combination of corrupted images from the windows that was running
  while i was doing the latest updates , my last session before the
  problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1004775] Re: NetworkManager restarts dnsmasq on every IPv6 route advertisement, thus very frequently

2012-06-27 Thread James Tait
FWIW, I've checked the Ignore automatically obtained routes checkbox
in the Routes... dialogue. I'm going to see how it goes. So far I've
reconnected to Freenode, Facebook and G+ after unplugging my network
cable to clear the route list, and so far the route list hasn't grown
from the default routes set up when I reconnected the cable.

  NetworkManager stops and starts dnsmasq very frequently (every few
  minutes). During the brief window that dnsmasq is restarting,
  hostname resolution doesn't work. dnsmasq is getting restarted
  frequently enough that I see brief hostname resolution errors in
  Chrome several times a day during normal web browsing.

  This is on Precise with network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4 and dnsmasq-
  base 2.59-4.

  The frequent restarts seem to be triggered by IPv6 route
  advertisements on my network. (See log snippet below.) When
  NetworkManager gets a route advertisement, it reconfigures everything.
  In the case of dnsmasq, this means stopping dnsmasq, writing a new
  config file, and starting dnsmasq. NetworkManager should restart
  dnsmasq only if it its configuration changes.

  I'm attaching a snippet from /var/log/daemon.log on my system that
  demonstrates a restart. This is with debug logging configured in
  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977639] Re: NetworkManager erroneously reports iwlwifi as disabled by hardware switch

2012-04-10 Thread James Tait
I managed to restore my wifi using the rfkill command as described here:

  http://sunilkumarn.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/solution-to-wireless-
disabled-by-hardware-switch/

I had to reboot for the device to become available, however, and I'd
like to understand how NetworkManager got itself in such a state in the
first place.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977639] Re: NetworkManager erroneously reports iwlwifi as disabled by hardware switch

2012-04-10 Thread James Tait
Turns out this is easy to reproduce, at least for me:

 * Associate with a wireless network. (This step may not be necessary, but is
the normal state for me.)
 * Click nm-applet to activate the drop-down.
 * Uncheck Enable Wireless from the nm-applet drop-down.
 * Click nm-applet a second time to activate the drop-down.
 * Note under Wireless Networks in the nm-applet drop-down, the message
wireless is disabled by hardware switch.
 * Note that Enable Wireless in the nm-applet drop-down is greyed out.

To re-enable wireless, I have to:

 * Open a terminal.
 * Issue: sudo rfkill list.
 * Note the indexes of the Wireless LAN entries that show Soft blocked: yes.
 * Issue: sudo rfkill unblock n for each value of n returned by the
command above.
 * Issue: sudo service network-manager restart.
 * Click nm-applet to activate the drop-down.
 * Check Enable Wireless from the nm-applet drop-down.

  thinks that there are active external outputs - in such case suspend
  is skipped. Have a look at method do_lid_closed_action in gsd-power-
  manager.c. This method uses gnome_rr_output_is_laptop method from
  gnome-rr.c to find out, whether output is built-in or external. On my
  notebook output-name is default and hence output is considered to
  be an external one (even though there are no external outputs
  connected).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948844] Re: Closing laptop lid does not suspend

2012-03-14 Thread James Tait
Running gnome-settings-daemon without debug output produced nothing when
the lid was closed.

Running it with the debug output produced the attached - notably, gsd
seems to think there is still an external monitor connected, which there
definitely isn't.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948844] Re: Closing laptop lid does not suspend

2012-03-13 Thread James Tait
jtait@sixtymilesmile:~$ gsettings list-recursively
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power | grep lid
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action 'suspend'
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action 'suspend'

I verified that this is still a current issue for me. Closing the lid
does blank the screen, but doesn't lock it and doesn't suspend.

2012-03-13 Thread James Tait
Yes, requesting suspend through the session indicator works as expected.
I do recall having to add a boot parameter to get that to work. If I'm
not mistaken, acpi_sleep=nonvs was the one, but I also have nomodeset.

2012-03-06 Thread James Tait
I've come across this bug and had the idea of hashing the URL to create
the avatar filename rather than simply replacing some characters. I've
never written Vala before, but I'm willing to have a bash at patching it
if that would be of interest, so we can fix this in time for 12.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 929028] Re: gnome-terminal window stops repainting

2012-02-13 Thread James Tait
I don't know if something has changed in the recent updates, but this
seems an order of magnitude worse today. I'm having to hit Ctrl-A,
Ctrl-A several times to switch between Screen windows on almost every
occasion.

Bug description:
  I don't have a reliable test case for this.

  I spend the majority of my time in a gnome-terminal SSH'ing into a VM.
  I run byobu on the VM and switch between Screen windows very
  frequently. Often, I'll switch Screen windows and the gnome-terminal
  window will not repaint. A few seconds later, part of the byobu status
  bar will repaint such that the top two or three pixels of the
  highlighted window name will become apparent. Sometimes I have to
  switch back and forth several times to get the gnome-terminal window

  I haven't been able to reproduce this consistently (sorry) but it's
  happened twice since I upgraded to 11.10.

  Sometimes when I switch the workspace to one containing gnome-
  terminal, g-t fails to repaint. The screen remains the default off-
  white colour. It hasn't locked up, if I right-click I get a menu and
  can do things with it. But when I close the menu, the area where it
  was isn't cleared.

  I'm using xmonad, and so don't have compositing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 849254] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_unref()

2011-11-22 Thread James Tait
Yes, this is still an issue for me. Yes it is reproducible - I just have
to log out and log back in and it crashes shortly after the Unity
launcher is displayed. I assume there's something in some setting
somewhere that the program doesn't like, but I don't know where I should
start looking.
