Okay, it seems that we're moving in circles. Who's going to decide which
approach to choice? I can implement storing password to system keyrings
but I won't do this without clear statement from Mozilla what they would
like more. I still prefer storing only master password because of loose
coupling.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 41179]

2013-08-07 Thread Jhorak
(In reply to Jesse Glick from comment #102)
  explain how a user would switch from Linux to Windows and bring their
  passwords with them

 Same way you would for secrets used by any other application: enter them
 again. This is an OS/desktop issue, not the responsibility of an individual
 application. Of course if you have decided to use cloud password storage
 like Sync then that would be your means of sharing secrets across machines.

Why not make it still possible? I see no benefit in retyping password
when copying profiles. IMO profile should contain all data user wants it
to store (ie. also list of passwords). Anyway do the libsecret supports
KDE right now? If it doesn't we could probably cut password store
support by this change for KDE users or implement another kwalletd
backend.

I think storing master password in system keyring manager is making
things more loosely coupling. In case system keyring manager doesn't
provide master password then we fallback to user input of master
password. In case we saved all passwords to keyring and for some reason
keyring won't be available users wouldn't have a change to have they
passwords pre-filled.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 41179]

 4) Some people at Mozilla are working on this Sign into the browser /
 Profile in the Cloud thing, of which Sync is a part. See
 https://wiki.mozilla.org/Identity/AttachedServices. I think it is important
 to make sure that the people working on this feature discuss it with the the
 Identity people to make sure that this work and that work is
 compatible/complementary.
AFAIK this has nothing to do with master password. Master password is not send
to Sync service and user is not required to set master password on other
Firefox instances, but it's good to keep Sync in mind.

(In reply to MartinSchroeder from comment #98)
 What are the downsides of completely relying on libsecret for storing
 passwords instead of a proprietary solution? Then a user had all his
 passwords in his keyring and wouldn't have to care about other locations
 where passwords are stored.
This is also an option but it requires more libsecret binding:
Getting list of passwords for Saved Passwords dialog and allow to remove
individual records if we want to keep Saved Passwords and Sync working.

Personally I would stay with currently easiest solution which is storing
user defined master password to libsecret's keyring. It's up to user to
set strong password for Firefox and Keyring. They have probably weak
password now because they have to retype it frequently. If they didn't
have to they would eventually set stronger password. It's also smaller
change to introduce new bugs since we're doing lesser change.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 867424]

2013-03-15 Thread Jhorak
I think problem is that nsIAppStartup::Quit have some async calls and
returns sooner than application is actually quit. The session manager is
expecting that Firefox quit is finished when it returns from
nsNativeAppSupportUnix::DieCB method.

We need to wait in nsNativeAppSupportUnix::DieCB until application
actually finish quitting. Is there something for this in current code?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 867424]

2013-03-14 Thread Jhorak
Ignore last comment, problem was with Fedora's Gnome shell.

Basically it looks like it's working fine. Problem is that Firefox quit,
ie. nsIAppStartup::Quit takes some time and session manager is sometimes
impatient and kills Firefox sooner that it actually quits which leads to
another 'Well, this is embarrassing' page.

There seems to be session saving code missing yet. Session saving should
be supported in eggsmc.

Store Master Password by using libsecret to Gnome Keyring patch v2

 Are you sure you need to do this as async? I don't understand all aspects of
 how SyncRunnableBase works, but if this is a separate thread, you could just
 use secret_password_lookup_sync().

The secret_password_lookup is called on main thread, so we have to use async
function to update gui.

Store Master Password to Gnome Keyring patch v3

Changes
 - Prompt user if he wants to store master password to Gnome Keyring.
 - rewritten patch a bit to avoid a lot of nested ifs.
Changing reviewer as long as Kai showed some interest in this patch. Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 411358]

2013-01-30 Thread Jhorak
(In reply to fabrice.neyret from comment #74)
 Hi guys. I came here BTWof the author of a linkifyer extension for
 thunderbird.
 I must say I'm a bit afraid by what I read in this discussions.
 - '+' IS a legal character for files in unix.
 - svn+ssh: IS an extremely important url for developpers (+ forges often go
 with mailing-lists).
 - I might be naive, but this bug sounds to me as the classical forgetting to
 protect a string by despites it might possibly contains spaces or special
 characters (important for FS pathes as well as plenty other kinds of
 strings).
 - It seems unreasonable to me to decide that the problem will end with the
 new UbuntuLTS:
   - gnome3 has plainty of problems and bugs, and it is likely that real
 computer (ie, not tablets) user will replace it by anything else, eg,
 gnome2.
   - existing code might still be used under 12.04LTS (some people in CS,
 research and engineering do have to ensure backward compatibility, sometimes
 even for binaries).
   - I guess many people will stuck with 10.04LTS even after march.

 As I understand it from this discussion, there are 2 identified bugs: one in
 gnome2 (the probably forgoten ) which must be fixed by this community, and
 one in thunderbird (about the popup - or before thunderbird, about the error
 status) for which the thunderbird community just have to release a built
 using --disable-gio .
 Any of the 2 solutions is sufficient to fix the problem, even if it would be
 better to fix both.

 - could you please do this thunderbird release, and forward the gnome bug
 to the gnome community ? thanks.

In comment 67, 68 and 70 we've come into conclusion this bug is in old
gconf. The patch I've made is only a workaround, not actual fix. You
should probably push on gconf package maintainers and let them fix this
problem. It's already fixed in upstream.

  From reading this extract (

Subject:Re: GConf/Thunderbird error on Solaris Nevada

Hi Mats,I believe you download the contribute builds of Thunderbird 2, and
run
  it on snv_70.

  For some reason, the fix is upstreamed to Thunderbird 3 alpha, but not
  community version of Thunderbird 2.
  Fixed in snv_68 means the fix was integrated to Thunderbird bundled
  with snv_68.

  ...it seems that the fix for this in thunderbird2 might require some manual
intervention as although the problem is well know, the fix was only
incorporated in the newer thunderbird3.

  Have just checked the Karmic version at:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/thunderbird
  which currently shows that version 2 of thunderbird is planned for Karmic
release.

  As thunderbird3 is at Beta 3 right now I can perhaps see why debian and
ubuntu are sticking with Thunderbird2 just now.
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/about/press/archive/2009-07-21-01

  However it does seem a shame to ship a new release with this known
  gconf issue unpatched.

Store Master Password to Gnome Keyring patch v2

Fixed patch, asking for review from PSM.
The patch has one drawback though. In Saved Passwords list the master password
is not required to show password for each record. However Gnome keyring also
allows to show password without typing master password too - user is supposed
to lock his screen when leaving his computer alone...

 Store Master Password to Gnome Keyring patch v1

 You need build system and PSM reviews, so I'll just comment on code patterns.

 +  PRUnichar *password = nullptr;
 +  nsAutoString promptString;
 +
 + // Get prompt message for Gnome Keyring master password
 +  nsCOMPtrnsINSSComponent
 nssComponent(do_GetService(kNSSComponentCID, rv));
 +  if (NS_FAILED(rv))
 +return;
 +
 +  const PRUnichar* formatStrings[1] = {
 +ToNewUnicode(NS_LITERAL_STRING(Gnome Keyring))
 +  };
 NS_NAMED_LITERAL_STRING gnomeKeyring(Gnome Keyring);
 const PRUnichar* formatStrings[] = { gnomeKeyring.get() };
 Or since this is linux-only, MOZ_LL, NS_LL or uGnome Keyring might work.
 This avoids having to free the string manually.

Thanks for feedback.
The ustr or NS_LL is char16_t*. I'm not sure if I can safely cast it to
PRUnichar), can I?

So what is current Mozilla point of view to incorporate this enhancement to
Firefox directly (without extension)? And if so what is more preferable:
1. store all saved password in keyring
2. store only master password in keyring.

fix for gconf v1

This is simple hack to avoid showing the error window. It shouldn't
affect Firefox or Thunderbird when GIO backend was enabled, as long as
gvfs is used only as fallback when GIO service is not available. This
fix suitable for long time support version of Linux (like RHEL or
Ubuntu).

Hi Mats,I believe you download the contribute builds of Thunderbird 2, and

  For some reason, the fix is upstreamed to Thunderbird 3 alpha, but not

  Fixed in snv_68 means the fix was integrated to Thunderbird bundled

  ...it seems that the fix for this in thunderbird2 might require some manual

2012-11-15 Thread Jhorak
My fix works for RHEL5, where's no gio, so I can't recompile with
--enable-gio there. You may consider to disable gio in your builds,
because as you say Ubuntu is using early version of gio and it is
probably only wrapper to gvfs (when you experience same popup error
window as gvfs creates). Upstream switched to gio as default quite
recently (until that time gvfs was used as default) so there shouldn't
be a problem for older systems to stay with gvfs only.

I don't like the idea to filter some schemes for all users just because
some legacy libraries used by LTS distributions are buggy (we should
actually fix these libraries). As long as gvfs is not used by mozilla as
default we could add this hack to gvfs code. I would like to keep gio
code untouched.

 Sorry, we can't accept a diff against the mozilla-beta part of a comm-beta
 checkout. If you think the issue affects Thunderbird 17 then you will need
 to submit a patch against mozilla-central and get it uplifted to
 mozilla-beta.

 Also I'm not a reviewer for toolkit/system/gnome, please try karlt instead.

Thanks for letting me know. Lets ask Karl what he thinks of it.

 + is installed then error window pops up if scheme is containing '+'
 character.
 + Let's pretend these kind of schemes are not supported by gnomevfs. */

 Are you sure gnomevfs is involved in gconf_client_get_* calls?
 Can you point me at the GConf code that uses GnomeVFS, please?
Sorry, I've got confused with gnomevfs (for some reason I thought gconf was
part of it). The comment is invalid. This is issue with gconf of course.

GError *err = nullptr;
gchar *command = gconf_client_get_string(mClient, key.get(), err);
if (!err  command) {
  key.Replace(key.Length() - 7, 7, NS_LITERAL_CSTRING(enabled));

 Can you explain, please, why a dialog would be shown when there is a GError
 parameter passed to the gconf_client_get_* functions?

 (Removing review request for now until we understand what is happening.)

I've looked into it deeper into gconf code and it seems there's a bug with
forwarding GError value:
gconf_client_get_string(GConfClient* client, const gchar* key,
GError** err)
{
  GError* error = NULL;
  GConfValue* val;

  g_return_val_if_fail (err == NULL || *err == NULL, NULL);

  val = gconf_client_get (client, key, error);

gconf_client_get (GConfClient* client,
  const gchar* key,
  GError** err)
{
  g_return_val_if_fail (GCONF_IS_CLIENT (client), NULL);
  g_return_val_if_fail (key != NULL, NULL);
  return gconf_client_get_full (client, key, NULL, TRUE, err);
}

See passing of error variable, it should most likely be:
  val = gconf_client_get (client, key, error);

When the error is NULL the handle_error use
gconf_client_unreturned_error to emit unreturned error signal which
subsequently leads into showing the error message.

This is valid for older gconf2 library (in my case GConf2-2.14.0). So
the patch is actually workaround for systems where these old libraries
are. We should probably push on gconf2 package maintainers to fix this
issue in gconf2.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 411358]

2012-11-09 Thread Jhorak
Hm, I can't say it's a fault of --enable-gio, this seems to be related to
g(nome)vfs. There's no libgio in RHEL5 (usually located in glib2 package) and
g(nome)vfs backend is used during compilation and I see same error message.
Affected versions:
- gnome-vfs2-2.16.2
- gnome-2.16.0

I'm getting popup and I don't have libgio installed. I think it is
related to older version of gnome-vfs2. I'll try to do some debugging
tomorrow, and we'll see.

2011-12-01 Thread Jhorak
Created attachment 577534
gsettings proxy patch v2

Thanks for reviewing. Attaching patch which should respect mentioned
issues.

There is a new symbol that needs to be added to the GSETTINGS_FUNCTIONS at the
top of the file for dynamic lookup, and some other things to touch up there so
that this compiles against old versions of GIO.
Could you be more specific (the other things)?

Please have a look.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 875266]

2011-11-29 Thread Jhorak
(In reply to Karl Tomlinson (:karlt) from comment #7)
 Think about whether using NS_NewAdoptingUTF8StringEnumerator instead of
 nsIMutableArray would simplify things:
 http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/annotate/84117219ded0/xpcom/ds/
 nsStringEnumerator.h#l90

Isn't NewAdoptingUTF8StringEnumerator available only for internal API?
I'm having problem with compilation when file including
nsStringEnumerator.h (it seems to include nsString.h which needs to have
MOZILLA_INTERNAL_API defined and I don't see MOZILLA_INTERNAL_API in
Makefile or in compilation output - in toolkit/system/gnome directory).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 867424]

2011-10-18 Thread Jhorak
Considering first option: I understand that using dbus is suitable only
for Gnome but libgnome(ui) is also Gnome-only, right? So far only Gnome
platform was supported.

I also like third option but I'm unsure what's Mozilla's attitude to
embedding foreign sources.

What is for sure that we need to get rid of libgnome(ui). Sooner is
better.

By checking js stacktrace getting proxy settings for this kind of URI
makes sense. I can't imagine how to avoid it during startup.
