I'd forgotten about this until now. It's been working for me lately. I can reproduce this with sudo mount -t cifs -o noauto,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,guest,nounix,noserverino,file_mode=0660,dir_mode=0755,iocharset=utf8,vers=2.1 //192.168.1.1/backup/ /media/grumpy/brick followed by running nautilus The network drive is a USB hard disk attached to my router. After recent upgrade of network-manager:amd64 from version 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 to version 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 DNS resolution of VPN's server hostnames does not work. Roll back to version 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 solves the problem.
