[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240198] Re: Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2014-07-22 Thread Jochen Fahrner
It looks like Canonical is not interested in fixing essential bugs. This
and some other essential bugs (nvidia driver problem, brcm driver
problem) caused me to switch to native Debian with Gnome 3. And I was
very astonished that Debian does not suffer from all these bugs, because
both systems are based on Gnome 3. So it must be Canonical modifications
that break the system, but no one at Canonical feels responsible for all
these bugs. Instead they wait for someone upstream to fix these bugs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1315384] Re: python-indicate not showing up in message indicator

2014-05-28 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Yes, I did it the same way. I asked that question to Gajim developers
and they answered, it could be because Gajim uses GTK2, while Unity is
using GTK3.

Is there some documentation how messaging menu can be used in GTK2? Or
is this not possible?

BTW: if python-indicate is no longer working in Trusty, you should
remove the package.

Charles, if libindicate ist dead, please remove this package and all
dependent packages. It makes no sense to keep non working packages! It
confuses everybody.

Canonical should make it clear that libindicate does not longer exist.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1111884] Re: 10de:0611 nouveau fails at suspend/resume - PAGE_NOT_PRESENT

2014-05-28 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I have to correct myself. Kernel 3.7.10 does not solve the issues with
nouveau. The only difference is: it does not always freeze after resume,
but sometimes it also does. With later kernel version it always freezes.

In many years as a Ubuntu user my experience is, that the free graphic
drivers (nouveau, radeon) never worked satisfying, and this has not
changed until now. The proprietary drivers always worked better, and I
hope they gain control of the problems with nvidia driver.

At the moment I think it's best to downgrade to 12.04 and wait for a
half year or a year.

2014-05-27 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Is there any progress in this critical bug? My MacBook 5,1 became mostly
unusable after upgrade to Trusty because of Bug #1319899. Neither
nouveau nor nvidia are working reliable in Trusty. Since this critical
bug is unsolved for more than a year, I have no hope that it will ever
be fixed. If there is no chance to get my graphics working reliable in
Trusty, I will have to downgrade to Precise, which was working flawless
for me.

2014-05-27 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Look at Ilia Mirkins answer. Looks like freedesktop.org is only
cooperating with kernel developers. Normal users have to contact their
distributions support channel. But I see no activities by Canonical to
solve this issue. Now I understand why many people don't switch to linux
:-(

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-24 Thread Jochen Fahrner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1240198 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1240198

Mirko, you are right. And it's also a shame how long critical bugs are
unresolved. See Bug #884 . This makes nouveau graphics driver
totally unusable on laptops (laptops need supsend/resume for power
saving). This bug is reported in january 2013 and still unresolved!

When those critical bugs are unresolved for such a long time, you can
think about how low long it will take till this bug gets fixed. It's
time to think about a switch to some other, more stable system.

This is NOT a duplicate of Bug #1240198! In this bug the keyboard layout
is correct after booting. The bug is, that it is changing randomly AFTER
booting.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-21 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I'm also wondering why this is of low priority. A system with a broken
keyboard layout is totally broken and unusable. IMHO this is high!

I'm thinking about downgrading to 12.04 which really worked flawless for
me. Since install of 14.04 I have lots of problems on my MacBook 5,1.

Nouveau is crashing on resume from suspend. Bug #884

Nvidia often does not recognize graphics card and input devices. Bug
#1319899

Wifi often tries endless to connect. Maybe Bug #1310746, I'm not sure.

Keyboard layout is changing randomly.

My MacBook got really unusable with this upgrade. All these bugs exits
since months, and my hope that they will be fixed soon is fading away
from day to day.

This is not what the One Hundred Papercuts claims. :-(

nvidia-319 black screen after upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-319” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I was on Ubuntu 13.04, just changed from nvidia-current to nvidia-319
  a few days ago.

Today, I decided to upgrade to 13.10, after reboot,
  1. The login screen was in low resolution.
  2. Then right after login, an error dialog pop-up saying detected system
problem, asking me whether to report the problem.
  3. Further to proceed, then black screen with only mouse pointer freely to
move.
  4. Switched to command terminal tty1 (ctrl + alt + F1), logged in and used
apt-get to remove nvidia-319 and re-install nvidia-current nvidia-settings.
  5. Rebooted and seems fine, the Report System Problem dialog pop-up again
and now being directed to here to report the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-09 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I can confirm comment #29. I'm on Trusty with a german keyboard layout
(qwertz). After login all is ok. But sometime later the layout suddenly
switches to some englisch layout (qwerty). The indicator still is
showing german. Manual switching to US and then back to DE restores the
german layout.

Just upgraded from 12.04 (raring) to 12.10 (saucy) and keyboard layout keeps
changing from pt_br to what I think is en_us.
It seems random so I don't know what trigger this, but sometimes just
alt-tabbing is enough to mess with keyboard layout in one of the windows.
I already removed the en_us from my keyboard sources, double checked the use
of one source for all windows, and even removed accelerators to switch between
layouts but none have worked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1153488] Re: Treats bluetooth input device batteries as batteries

2014-05-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Is this bug about showing a wrong icon or showing the mouse battery at
all?

IMHO a mouse battery should not be shown at all. My Logitech wireless
mouse has a non-chargable battery (primary cell) which runs a year (or
longer) with the same battery. Its absolutely useless to show its status
in favour of the laptop battery. My main concern is the laptop battery,
not the mouse battery, and I wish to see laptop battery status all the
time!

This problem still exists in 14.04.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * There are many Bluetooth devices with battery information inside.
When they are treated as system battery, it will make the system
poweroff/suspend/hibernate when some Bluetooth device has critical low
battery. It is a very annoying behavior for the users. Originally,
there is no such Bluetooth battery information until Ubuntu 12.04
brings linux-quantal-lts and linux-raring-lts, so those linux kernels
  also bring this issue.

  [Test Case]

   * Pair some Bluetooth devices, such as Apple Wireless Mouse or Apple
Wireless Keyboard.
   * Click the power indicator and you can find Apple Wireless Mouse is listed
as system battery, and there is no Apple Wireless Keyboard. If you open
gnome-power-statistics, you can find the 'Supply' field of Apple Wireless Mouse
is 'Yes' but it should not be.

  [Regression Potential]

   * There is no obvious regression as I know.

  [Other Info]

   * Most patches are from upstream, modified to fix the conflicts, and made by
the same developer (i.e. fourdollars).
   * We need another patch from
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=d0a934b764c67b4bf626f5b7cf725a6e3066afd2
to make Apple Wireless Keyboard showing.

  [Original Bug Description]

This is a weird one... the system is an HP Pavilion 23 All In One and
is powered by a large power supply brick.

I currently have an Apple Magic Mouse connected via Bluetooth. As
soon as the mouse is connected, the Battery indicator shows up and
clicking on that shows that the system is reading my mouse as a
  battery!

See the attached screen shot for what I see in the Power status.

  Looking at hcitool:
  ubuntu@201206-11396:~$ hcitool dev
  Devices:
   hci0 9C:B7:0D:80:71:DB

To make matters even more weird, I actually observed the battery
indicator go from full to Critically Low and the system suspended
itself. Keep in mind, again, that this system has NO battery, it's
reading my bluetooth mouse as a battery device.

I disconnected the magic mouse and the battery indicator went to Empty
Red outline and status showed Battery Disconnected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1315345] [NEW] open with MIME-type functionality broken

2014-05-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Public bug reported:

I cannot open a video/mpeg file with avidemux.

The desktop file for avidemux has the correct entries:

MimeType=video/mpeg;video/x-mpeg;video/x-avi;application/x-flash-

The MIME-type of a file I want to open in nautilus with avidemux is
video/mpeg. The open with dialog in nautilus is missing avidemux.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1315345] Re: open with MIME-type functionality broken

2014-05-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
After some googling around I found a workaround for this problem:
Nautilus now needs a %U in the Exec line of an applications .desktop
file.

with a line

Exec=avidemux2_gtk %U

Nautilus shows it in the open with dialog.

Either fix this new behaviour in nautilus, or fix ALL .desktop files of
all applications.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1002224 ***

I think this bug has nothing to do with gallium vdpau and xvmc.
This bug is related to debians mesa package as described here:

It should be solved in the latest debian mesa package

2014-02-23 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I'm on 12.04 with shared-mime-info 1.0-0ubuntu4.1 and still suffering
from this bug. The attachment in comment #3 works for me. I don't
understand why this is still an issue after 4 years.

.ts files always get recognized as application/x-linguist and never as

Status in shared MIME database:

Status in “shared-mime-info” package in Ubuntu:

Status in Baltix GNU/Linux:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

I checked Hardy, Jaunty and Karmic: *.ts files are always mapped to
  application/x-linguist by
  /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml. But there are several
Linux-based settop boxes that record videos in *.ts-files. So if
application/x-linguist is obsolete then it should simply be replaced
by video/mpeg. Otherwise the mime framework has to distinguish such
files by inspecting their headers. If someone knows more about
x-linguist files, please add a comment!

The problem has already been reported upstream two month ago (see
freedesktop.org above). But for 10.04 LTS we should fix it by a patch,
if it is not fixed upstream by then.

As a workaround copy the attached file to
~/.local/share/mime/packages/mpeg-ts.xml and update your mime-database with:
  $ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime

To trigger the regeneration of failed thumbnails just delete them:
  $ rm ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/*.png

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1004841] Re: Thunderbird Icon set is broken (ugly, black and white icons)

2013-07-01 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I'm wondering why it often lasts so long to fix some simple and stupid bugs in
Ubuntu.
Some time ago I switched to Debian Wheezy because of this, and I'm now very
satisfied. Debian is a very conservative distribution which does not suffer
from all these crude Canonical changes.

Title:
Thunderbird Icon set is broken (ugly, black and white icons)

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since Oneiric the standard theme in thunderbird is broken. In Oneiric (and
Precise) some of the coloured Icons were replaced by blackwhite pictograms,
but not consistently all. For example the Lightning Icons still remain
coloured, as they were before.
I don't know why some Icons were replaced by pictograms (is this because of a
new GTK-Theme?) , this is only in the Linux version of TB, the Windows version
still has the coloured icons. It would have been better if the old standard
theme remains untouched, and a new theme would have been created for the new
blackwhite pictograms.

See attached screenshot for the weird icons.

Possible work-around: Download Thunderbird from mozilla, extract a
file called omni.ja and overwrite the copy at /usr/lib/thunderbird/.
Not sure if this has undesired effects (it may delete all your email,
so be careful!), but it works for me.

I could not believe what was written here, so I tested it myself. On

disc through smb. 7389 files with 34,2 GB. No problem. Looks like it is

2013-04-30 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Bodum, I don't want to clutter my system with Gnome. Some time ago I
left Ubuntu because of all these Gnome 3 things are very hungry on
resources. I wanted a leightweigt but comfortable OS and found it in
Debian with Xfce. Compiz is the worst compositing manager I have ever
seen, wasting resources endless. I'm now very happy with Debian
Wheezy/Xfce and don't want to clutter this perfectly running system. I'm
sorry.

I'm having similar problems on Debian Wheezy/Xfce when copying large files via

responding until file transfer is finished. PCManFM does not suffer from this

Maybe I'm suffering from the same problem. Every time I upload a large
file through davfs2 to my web server, Thunar freezes completely, it even
does not redraw it's window. This even happens if I copy that file in
terminal, without Thunar. Thunar is frozen until file upload is
complete.

PCManFM and Rox filer are not affected by this problem. I don't know
about Nautilus, I don't want to install all these Gnome 3 libs.

Title:
.gvfs can't be stat'd by root causing backup tools to fail

Status in GVFS:
  Confirmed
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “gvfs” package in ALT Linux:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Problem
  ===
For security reasons ( possible DoS ), other users (esp. root) cannot access
a fuse filesystem, and not even stat the mountpoint:

  $ sudo stat .gvfs
stat: cannot stat `.gvfs': Permission denied
  $ sudo ls -la
ls: cannot access .gvfs: Permission denied
  d? ? ? ? ?? .gvfs

This means rsync --one-file-system (and similar options for find,
tar...) cannot know this is a different file system they actually want
to exclude, and fail on the permission denied error.

Please note that it is GOOD AND CORRECT that root cannot copy the
.gvfs directory. The real problem is that the stat fails.

  Workarounds
  ===
  * bind-mount the file system you want to backup beforehand (see comment #67)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 775117] Re: Thunar hangs on first launch of each session

2013-02-22 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I think I found a solution for this nasty bug. In /etc/samba/smb.conf
acivate the name resolve order line and change it to:

name resolve order = wins bcast

The host component of the search tries browsing the internet and makes
the search hang.

Bug description:

  ** Bug Description **
Running a fresh install of Xubuntu Natty 32-bit, if I log in then launch
Thunar (1.2.1-3ubuntu2), Thunar will not appear right away, and the desktop
workspace will be unresponsive (excluding panels other applications). Thunar
eventually appears around 20 seconds later (est.), usually accompanied by the
following error popup:

  Launch Error
The folder could not be opened
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

In the accompanying instance of Thunar, the Network item is missing
from the side pane shortcut view.

Depending on how long I've waited, usually the second or third Thunar
launch attempt comes up very quickly, and the Network shortcut is
  present in the side pane.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 775117] Re: Thunar hangs on first launch of each session

2013-02-22 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Hi Stefano,

 i modified the file usr/share/gvfs/mounts/network.mount

with that change you have to wait the first time you click on Network.

Now in my file i have
name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast
so i had to delete lmhosts host ???

It's essential that you remove the host. This is the cause for the hangs.
But you can also remove the lmhosts. This has no function until you add some
entries in /etc/samba/lmhosts.

In comment #20 Eugene wrote there is a workaround for this problem. I
have read the thread at bugzilla.gnome.org but don't understand what
exactly the workaround is? Please can someone describe how this

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 937325] Re: jockey doesnt install fglrx kernel module on precise

2012-10-21 Thread Jochen Fahrner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 873058 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873058

I did a fresh install of 12.04 and then tried to install fglrx-updates
through jockey. Jockey ended with an error. I attached the jockey.log.

Installation through synaptic was ok and fglrx is working now.

This bug confuses new users and should be fixed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 937325] Re: jockey doesnt install fglrx kernel module on precise

2012-10-21 Thread Jochen Fahrner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 873058 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873058

@Reinhard: yes I'm sure. Otherwise vainfo would not show which video profiles
are supported on my gpu.
I'm using Ubuntu 32-bit. Maybe you have 64-bit and there is one more bug with
this version?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1004841] [NEW] Thunderbird Icon set is broken

2012-05-26 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Public bug reported:

** Affects: thunderbird (Ubuntu)

This seems to have been reported a number of times previously, most
  closely related to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/529696?comments=all

This seems to have reappeared in Natty.

  Brasero.log contains:
  8--
   cat brasero-session.log
  Checking session consistency (brasero_burn_check_session_consistency
brasero-burn.c:1739)
  Unsupported type of task operation
Session error : An internal error occurred (brasero_burn_record
brasero-burn.c:2856)
  ---8
  The /etc/libao.conf file contains:

  8--
  cat /etc/libao.conf
  default_driver=alsa
  quiet
  ---8

  Recreation is simple.

  1) Open Brasero
  2) New Audio Project
  3) Copy MP3 (or OGG) file into project
  4) Attempt to burn
  5) CD is ejected before burning.

  On a side note, I can't used ubuntu-bug brasero or ubuntu-bug
PROCESS_NUMBER to report the bug it says that it isn't a valid ubuntu
  package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / real trash on IMAP server

2011-11-23 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Boleslaw, you misunderstand. A protocol has nothing to do with a user
interface. These are two distinct things.
Look at the POP-protocol: it has no folders, it has no trash and it is not
designed to leave mail on the server. But many mail clients have local folders,
local trash, and leave mail on the server. The protocol is only the transport
mechanism for mail, it has nothing to do with the way a mail client offers mail
to the user.

Now look at IMAP. Many old clients used it similar as POP, they fetched
mail from the server as they did with POP. Folders were only local in
these old clients. Modern clients work different, they leave mail on the
server, they use folders on the server, and since trash is only a normal
folder, they can move deleted mails to the trash folder on the server.
Why should they restrict the user interface to the technical limits of
the underlying protocol? There is no reason to do that.

I explain you quickly the problem :
The evolution Trash is a virtual folder showing mails marked as DELETED on
IMAP
  server.
In a one user on one desktop and one OS, it's probably a really good
think
for all reasons given by evolution team.

But in my environnement : multiple user, multiple OSes, multiple MUA, ...
it's a
  critical probleme.
For security reason (too easy to definitively destroy a mail) user the MUA
must
copy deleted mail in a real Trash mailbox on the IMAP server.

I can use another MUA like thunderbird, but I loose the really good
integration
   of evolution in ubuntu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / real trash on IMAP server

2011-11-15 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Don't mind about it. Evolution is history. Canonical has decided to make
Thunderbird the default mail client, and they did it right. The
evolution of evolution got stuck in the last century. If someone is
argueing this is the way how imap is designed to work, he is not
willing to make his piece of software user-friendly. This is a point
which makes Apple so successfull. The user experience has to have the
highest priority, not some old fashioned technical arguments.
