[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1631528] [NEW] Blank screen after grub menu

2016-10-07 Thread Johan Nilsson
Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 on my laptop I have some
problems booting. After the grub menu the screen goes blank and nothing
happens after that. I think the system is booting properly apart from
the screen not showing anything, I can change the volume using the
hardware keys and I can connect with SSH from another machine. I've
found two workarounds for this problem.

1) Select recovery mode from the grub meny and then resume normal boot,
however, the screen resolution is not set properly.

2) Change my grub config file to boot into text mode. I commented out the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
and changed
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”text"
and uncommented the line
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

After running sudo update-grub and rebooting the system boots into MATE
and the correct screen resolution is set.

I've collected dmesg after a "blank screen" boot, let me know if there
is anything else I should provide.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1475914] Re: login freezes or black screen with kernel higher than 3.19.0-15

2015-07-23 Thread Johan Nilsson
I have a similar issue with my laptop with AMD graphics running ubuntu
gnome 15.04, which I originally reported as #1447356. I have kernels
3.19.0-15 and 3.19.0-22 and both of them give a black screen after the
grub screen.

Title:
  login freezes or black screen with kernel higher than 3.19.0-15

Status in xserver-xorg-video-ati package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Env :
  Linux 3.19.0-22-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 16 23:32:37 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cape Verde
XT [Radeon HD 7770/8760 / R7 250X]
  using xorg default driver (not the proprietary)

  Facts :
  - On the login page, just after the boot, the system is freezed (or looping)
  - I can't open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1
  - When I choose a previous kernel version from Grub, the problem occurs with
all versions I had installed since 3.19.0-16
  3.19.0-15   OK
  3.19.0-16   KO
  3.19.0-18   KO
  3.19.0-20   KO
  3.19.0-21   KO
  3.19.0-22   KO
  - When I choose the recovery mode of the version that have the problem, the
recovery menu freezes also (see attachment)
  - I've done a clean install on a new disk and after the update of the kernel
(3.19.0-15 - 3.19.0-22) I have a black screen after the boot (no login
screen). And I have the same problem trying the recovery mode with version
3.19.0-22.
