Title:
New mounting point incompatible with Wine apps

Status in gvfs package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The new mount point since 12.10 is incompatible with Wine apps.
Basically a right click>open with will fail because of invalid
  characters. Same with File>Open dialogs.

  Example invalid mount point:

  /var/run/user/username/gvfs/smb-share:server=192.168.0.1,share=public

That is annoying when Office 2010 is needed to open/edit a file that
LibreOffice don't render properly (Yes, that happens)

Not only Enpass is affected.

  error:

reading it. If you save it, all the external changes could be lost.
  Save it anyway?"

The think is lying to me because I havent made any external changes.

When I click "Save Anyway", i get this error:

"Could not save the file /home/dhonn/website/arrays.php."

But on the third try it works just fine.

Here are the error messages, btw there are also GUI glitches too:

I have the same issue on multiple servers running ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1806517] Re: Ghostscript segmentation fault onb PDF using -dFirstPage and -dLastPage

2018-12-03 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
NOTE: This won't survive an apt upgrade and may raise security issues
(gs has been update to 9.26 because of security issues, see
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/g/ghostscript/ghostscript_9.26~dfsg+0-0ubuntu0.18.04.1/changelog)

As a temporary workaround one can downgrade.

For xenial (ubuntu 16.04):

# apt install libgs9-common=9.18~dfsg~0-0ubuntu2
libgs9=9.18~dfsg~0-0ubuntu2 ghostscript=9.18~dfsg~0-0ubuntu2

For bionic (ubuntu 18.04):

# apt install libgs9-common=9.22~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1
libgs9=9.22~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1 ghostscript=9.22~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1

For cosmic (ubuntu 18.10):

# apt install libgs9-common=9.25~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1
libgs9=9.25~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1 ghostscript=9.25~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1806517] [NEW] Ghostscript segmentation fault onb PDF using -dFirstPage and -dLastPage

2018-12-03 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
Public bug reported:

In order to convert a PDF file in PNG I use the command:

» convert "myfile.pdf[0]" test.png

Which gives this error:

convert-im6.q16: FailedToExecuteCommand `'gs' -sstdout=%stderr -dQUIET -dSAFER
-dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dNOPROMPT -dMaxBitmap=5 -dAlignToPixels=0
-dGridFitTT=2 '-sDEVICE=pngalpha' -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4
'-r72x72' -dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=1
'-sOutputFile=/tmp/magick-11774WIkYdVETEs9I%d'
'-f/tmp/magick-11774JZhknqCDhkN0' '-f/tmp/magick-11774twGtf-JFihri'' (-1) @
error/delegate.c/ExternalDelegateCommand/462.
convert-im6.q16: no images defined `test.png' @
error/convert.c/ConvertImageCommand/3258.

So I tried using ghostscript directly:

» ghostscript -dSAFER -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dNOPROMPT -dMaxBitmap=5
-dAlignToPixels=0 -dGridFitTT=2 -sDEVICE=pngalpha -dTextAlphaBits=4
-dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 -r72x72 -dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=1
'-sOutputFile=test.png' '-fmyfile.pdf'

Which gives an error:

GPL Ghostscript 9.26 (2018-11-20)
Copyright (C) 2018 Artifex Software, Inc. All rights reserved.

Processing pages 1 through 1.

[1]10954 segmentation fault (core dumped) ghostscript -dSAFER -dBATCH
-dNOPAUSE -dNOPROMPT -dMaxBitmap=5

If I omit -dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=1 it works properly:

» ghostscript -dSAFER -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dNOPROMPT -dMaxBitmap=5
-dAlignToPixels=0 -dGridFitTT=2 -sDEVICE=pngalpha -dTextAlphaBits=4
-dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 -r72x72 '-sOutputFile=test.png' '-fmyfile.pdf'

Processing pages 1 through 2.

Please note that it also affects imagemagick convert command and PHP
readimage command. I have confirmed the bug on Ubuntu 16.04 too.

The recent ghostscript 9.26 version is definitely guilty.

gnome-disk-utility (show as "Disks" on the desktop environment running
Unity) systematically does not acknowledge that disks have SMART
capabilities when connected through a USB port; SMART capabilities are
grayed. However, 'sudo smartctl -a /dev/' works fine confirming
that there is no problem reading SMART data through a USB link. gnome-
disk-utility acknowledge SMART capabilities if the same disk is
  connected through a SATA port.

double click as it is the default action)

  * Regression potential
Make sure disks and images handling in the desktop still works

This issue is simple to reproduce on a fresh 18.04 install:

  - right click an iso image and select "Open with disk image mounter"
(or double click as it is the default action)

  - issue the command `gnome-disk-image-mounter image.iso`

The resulting is a dialog asking for the user's password and the

This has been fixed upstream, see this patch https://github.com

The workaround in #6 doesn't fix the system being very laggy while
copying files over USB. Maybe a tad better but huge lags still happen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 869793] Re: Nautilus is very slow when opening folders with many files

2015-02-17 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
Deleteing gvfs-metadatas fixed it for me (as a workaround)

rm -rf /home/YOUR-USERNAME-HERE/.local/share/gvfs-metadata
pkill gvfsd-metadata

As per https://wiki.debian.org/Nautilus/FAQ/SlowNautilus

Title:
Nautilus is very slow when opening folders with many files

Status in Nautilus:
  Confirmed
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Opening folders with many files takes a long time with Nautilus, to the point
it becomes unusable for folders with more than 5K files.
I've measured the time it takes for folders with different amount of files to
open with Nautilus and Gnome Commander. It is ~6 times faster with GC on
average. In folders with ~20K files, it takes 30s with nautilus versus 6! with
GC.

  With Nautilus
  ~3500 files tales 6 seconds
  ~7000 files takes 18 seconds
  ~15000 files takes 22 seconds
  ~2 files takes 30 seconds

  With Gnome Commander
  ~3500 files tales 1 second
  ~7000 files takes 1.5 seconds
  ~15000 files takes 3 seconds
  ~2 files takes 6 seconds

These are mostly small dicom files (MRI images). I am using a 8 core 3.4Ghz
and 16Gigs of RAM with Ubuntu 11.04 64-bits.
Also, of course, things like selecting all files and copying them around is
absurdly slow and makes nautilus unusable... but that would be another bug
report (?).

Bug description:
GNOME removed type-ahead find in Nautilus 3.6, not without

Now when you type in a Nautilus window, Nautilus immediately performs
a search in the current directory and all its subdirectories. I
personally find this annoying. If I want to search, I'll click the
search icon. Often I'm looking at a long directory listing and simply
want to jump to a certain point in it, and type-ahead find works great
  for that.

Would Ubuntu consider patching type-ahead find back in?

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2013-05-06 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
2013/5/7 BS-Harou har...@gmail.com

I just want to say I really miss this feature in ubuntu. Every time I
want to rename a file I firstly try this only to realize it is not
possible. I prefer using mouse to keyboard as much as possible and not
having this feature is really sad.

Just get use of using F2. I got used now and the F2 shortcut works on other
OSes too.

So now it doesn't annoy me anymore ;-]

The new mount point since 12.10 is incompatible with Wine apps.

Great, congrat! Now it is maybe time to backport the fix to the latest
LTS.

I can't imagine LTS users not being able to work in an enterprise
environment, for five years

[Upstream] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “gvfs” package in Fedora:

Bug description:
At the office I use my Ubuntu computer as a work station and connect
it to our Windows network by establishing Samba (smb) connections. In
this way I can not only use the print facilities but also use directly
the network directories for opening, saving of documents.

Since ubuntu 12.04 directories of windows networks have been
integrated in the procedure for opening, saving of documents in
Libreoffice. Directories available through open samba-connections thus
are integrated in the list of directories on which docs can be saved.
This was a great new features, since before 12.04 one had to save
files on a local directory first and then move or copy them to the
  windows directory in Nautilus.

After having done the upgrade to ubuntu 12.10 QQ this facility does
not work as it should. The network directories are still shown and it
it still possible to open a document. But is it not possible to save
it and giving it another name. Another thing which had become
impossible is to open a document from another source than the network
directory (e.g. local directory, attached doc to a mail) and save it
in a directory of the network server.

When doing this the system gives the information 'Error saving the document
#name#. The file does not exist' (see screenshot 1, text in italian). If one
then presses the OK-button there is a second error communication with the
following text:
Error is saving the document #name#:
  General Error
  Generel I/O error
(see screenshot 2, text in italian)

I have checked whether the same kind of error also occurs in other
programs, at least in Evince (pdf-reader). This is not the case.

A last issue I want to report is that when one opens a doc (e.g. odt)
from a network directory, modifies it and then save it, this seems to
work. There is no error messsage. When checking by re-opening the
saved document, in a few experiments I did the modifications were not
saved. In nautilus the date indication of the file also remained the
same. In other experiments however the saving of the documents with
the modifications seemed to work as it should.

conclusion: the integration of network directories in LO has become
unreliable, with a high risk of loss of information for the user.

speed in Eee PC 1101HA - the one using AR9285 - is very low. Right now
I am trying to using aptitude to install a package and it won't even

Title:
  Karmic WPA connection disconnects regularly

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

Since upgrading my karmic netbook approximately 1 week ago (sorry it's
not more specific), my wireless connection consistently drops out
  frequently (approx. once per minute).

Other machines (using Jaunty) on the same wireless router are
  unaffected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1077742] [NEW] Can't export as pdf to SMB shares

2012-11-11 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I open a libreoffice file from an SMB share and then hit the export to
PDF button. I keep the default location (the same as the libreoffice
file: the smb share), I then hit OK and get an error:

Error saving the document [document_name]:
Nonexistent file.

Then after hitting OK on the dialog, I get another one:

Error saving the document [document_name]:
General error.
General Input.output error.

After clicking ok on that last error dialog, Libreoffice is no more
usable: all buttons and most menu options are grayed out, the document
can't be edited anymore.

I need to 'killall soffice.bin'

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075868] [NEW] New mounting point incompatible with Wine apps

2012-11-06 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
Public bug reported:

The new mount point since 12.10 is incompatible with Wine apps.
Basically a right clickopen with will fail because of invalid
characters. Same with FileOpen dialogs.

Example invalid mount point:

/var/run/user/username/gvfs/smb-share:server=192.168.0.1,share=public

That is annoying when Office 2010 is needed to open/edit a file that
LibreOffice don't render properly (Yes, that happens)

Wi-Fi connection unstable under both NM and wicd -- ath9k

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Laptop is a PackardBell EasyNote TK85. I don't know if it is a bug in
  NetworkManager or ath9k, but I suppose it's ath9k, I also tried with
wicd, same problem. Problem exists since 11.04, I tried a lot to fix
it. Tested on Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

  UPDATE
  Problem still persists in precise.
  /UPDATE

  PROBLEM:

From time to time the network becomes very slow, often it is like
dead. After a few minutes it gets better again. If I restart
networking sometimes it helps, sometimes not.

  Solutions I tried:

  - ath9k.conf in modprobe.d with nohwcrypt=1
  - networkboot on top in BIOS (according to the internet sometimes it could
help)
  - compat-wireless via backport
  - power management off
  - blacklist acer_wmi, because it activates a second wlan-device
  - deactivate BT to exclude interference

After all this trouble I decided to file a bug.

Bug description:
The wireless network can be seen, and occasionally connects after a
cold boot. Most of the time network-manager complains that the WEP/WPA
key is not correct, pops up a dialogue repeatedly.

It may or may not obtain a DHCP lease. However, no data gets
  transmitted.

Scenario 1: (See comment by Dennis Heinson for another scenario)
Beta release updated 4/10/08 on a gen 2 MacBook Pro (atheros wifi) connecting
to a BT home hub with WEP 64 bit encryption (configuration as shipped). No
previous problems with Kubuntu 7.10 and the same hardware using self-compiled
drivers.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 972311] Re: Accessing a MTP device like the Galaxy Nexus fails

2012-06-06 Thread Laurent Dinclaux
The bug is still there in 12.04 stable. When I plug my Galaxy Nexus, a
nautilus empty windows opens and after a while I get an error in a gtk
window:

Désolé, impossible d'afficher tout le contenu de « Galaxy » : DBus
error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken.

Bug description:
After updating to intrepid, my Brother DCP-7025 printed every page
about 2 cm above the usual position. This leads to pages cut as if
printing with wrong paper configuration though A4 paper is set
everywhere (Cups settings, program settings). For example when
printing a test page with the printer configuration tool I cannot see
the upper part of the Ubuntu logo.

I have used both a hardy and an intrepid live cd to test and found out
that the problem only occurs using intrepid, so I think it's a problem
  with the intrepid driver packages.

However I found out, that in the printer configuration tool a wrong
driver DCP-7025 BR-Script is loaded. The correct (and working!)
driver is DCP-7025 for CUPS. So to manually solve the problem simply
choose the correct driver in the tool.

I think that during the installation process of the package brother-
cups-wrapper-laser the correct driver is not set to be used as
default driver and the system continues to use the wrong driver
  instead.
