Is there anyone who can work on this for 70? This sounds like a serious
problem so I'm concerned since we're at the end of the beta cycle very
soon.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1322784]

2015-02-27 Thread Lhenry
Comment on attachment 8561105
Pad heap allocations passed to flag_qsort() on x86 Linux to work around gcc bug
affecting Ubuntu packages

Accepting for ESR 31 since it's a topcrash and affects many users.

Title:
Firefox crashes in flag_qsort during spellchecker initialization on
  x86 due to gcc bug

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  Fix Released
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gcc-4.8 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The most common Firefox crash on Linux in Mozilla's crash-stats system
is crashes in the function flag_qsort.

  These crashes occur:
   * only on x86 architecture
   * only on Ubuntu packages (and not on Mozilla's builds)
   * on precise and saucy and trusty (based on kernel versions reported with
the crashes)
and appear to be due to a compiler bug in the compiler used to generate
Ubuntu's builds. (It could be a common compiler bug triggered by different
compiler options or a compiler bug specific to Ubuntu's gcc.)

The analysis that leads to the conclusion that this is a compiler bug
  is in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=983817 . In
particular, the compiler is miscompiling an access to an element of an
array of unsigned short as a 32-bit read, and when the unsigned short
in question is the last one in the allocation and that allocation is
aligned so that the byte following has a different 0x10 bit, this
  can lead to crashes.

The most recent (whenever you follow the link) 7 days of crash reports
  are available at: https://crash-

stats.mozilla.com/report/list?signature=flag_qsortproduct=Firefoxquery_type=containsrange_unit=weeks

  PDF.js prints blank pages

Firefox cannot close tab (using Ctrl-w) when flash content is selected

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  Confirmed

Status in “flashplugin-nonfree” package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Firefox cannot close tab (using Ctrl-w) or switch to next tab (using
Ctrl-Tab) when flash content is selected on page.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Open a new Tab
  2) Go to a website with flash content (in this case youtube.com)
  3) Selected the flash content by clicking on it (in this case click on play)
  4) While the content plays, press a keyboard shortcut (in this case Ctrl-w to
close the tab)

Result: The shortcut is not registered by firefox, the tab remains open
Expectation: The shortcut should be registered by firefox, the tab should
close

A good way of knowing that selecting the flash content is at the
root of the problem: if you select a part of the page that is not
flash content (in this case empty white space at the right or the left
of the video) followed by Ctrl-W, the tab closes.

  Version Information:
  Ubuntu Hardy (2.6.24-19-generic)
  firefox 3.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.3
  flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.124.0ubuntu2

This is still the case for the url bar though not for t he seach bar.
For the url bar, the dropdown still appears to be limited to the current width
of the url bar. For the search bar, the dropdown can be wider than the search
bar.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

The Google Suggest drop-down list is too narrow by default in Firefox
  2.0 (I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.5+1-0ubuntu1 from 7.04 Feisty).

See the screenshot attached. I'm using the default theme and fonts at
the resolution of 1024x768. The mouse pointer doesn't appear in the
screenshot; it was just pointing to the selected entry.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Firefox.

  2. In the search bar, select the Google search engine icon and type in
a common word that is not too short.

  3. A drop-down list from Google Suggest appears which contains several
indistinguishable suggestions, because for each suggestion, only the
first word is displayed, and the rest is replaced with an ellipsis
(...) because of the shortage of horizontal space. You can only see
the full suggestions as tool-tips, which is poor usability for the
  Suggest feature.

  Expected behavior:

Make the drop-down list wider to accommodate its content as necessary.
