[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1880404] [NEW] graphic app list does not scroll/scrolls partly with touchpad

2020-05-24 Thread mc
Public bug reported:

I have just upgraded to 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa GNOME version 3.36.2 and
now experiencing some (minor) issues.

When entering the app list (through the graphic button on the edge of
the dock) and trying scrolling through my apps using the touchpad,
scrolling is either not working or works partly - i.e i'm being able to
move only between the first two pages. If moving to a different page by
clicking the dots to the right side (say page 3 or 4), scrolling is
locked.

Interestingly, scrolling works fine when using my mouse wheel, and
depending on what page i'm ending up in, trying to use touchpad
afterwards allows me to scroll through the 3 pages - the one i started
in, the previous one, the one after.

I'm certain my touchpad is not damaged, as it works as usual when
browsing the net with several browsers.

I used to have this problem as well back in 18.04:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1694373
and it seemed like the scrolling response improved majorly in the sense that
gradual scrolling is now possible, making the experience more fluid than it
used to be.

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
inkscape : Depends: libpoppler64 (>= 0.48.0) but it is not installable

The libpoppler64 package has been replaced by the libpoppler68 package
  (https://packages.ubuntu.com/artful/libpoppler68) on Ubuntu 17.10.

A suggested fix would be to install libpoppler68, and if that is
  unavailable, use libpoppler64.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2017-09-07 Thread mc
@andrea-lazzarotto thank you for your information. I saw, that it is
fixed in 17.04, but I would like to stay on long-term-support version
and I still hope that it will be fixed for 16.04 too. I understand that
it cannot be fixed for all possible versions, but IMHO LTS version
should have this privilege.

When IPv4 Method is set to Automatic VPN, DNS address recieved from
OpenVPN server do not update resolv.conf.

This can be achieved when using a standard openvpn config file by
  adding the lines:

  script-security 2
  up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
  down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

In Network-manager there seems to be no option to run connection

Status in Inkscape:

Status in inkscape package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: inkscape

  UPDATED DESCRIPTION 2011-05-11 (AV):
When Inkscape loads a palette file (in GIMP .gpl format), it uses the
contents of the "Name: " header in the file to create a label in the palette
selector. If the "Name: " header is missing, then the palette selector label
remains unset.

Inkscape should handle this situation by providing a fallback, for
example the palette filename or a default string such as "Unnamed
  palette"

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
At the bottom right corner, the colour palette changer resides. I can change
the palettes as expected, but some palettes show up without a name (but
switching to them changes the palette shown in the bottom line). An
illustrating screenshot is attached.

Deleting ~/.config/inkscape and restarting inkscape does not resolve
  the issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 893210] Re: [Dell OptiPlex GX620 - AD1981b, playback] No sound at all

2013-12-21 Thread 9-mc-o
It seems that I have same problem here.
It's Dell Optiplex GX620 + fresh 13.10 install.

I have only 2 output ports in pulseaudio

ports:
analog-output-headphones;output-amplifier-on: Słuchawki /
Amplituner (priority 9010, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)
properties:
device.icon_name = audio-headphones
analog-output-headphones;output-amplifier-off: Słuchawki / Brak
amplitunera (priority 9000, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)
properties:
device.icon_name = audio-headphones

So I cannot get any output from motherboard ports (headphone port is also too
loud as somebody mentioned).

My alsa-info is at
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=e1ab95695370eaa14f1c47947e1a2a0a3232d2f0
(there's also nvidia card with intel-hd hdmi stuff inside)

Please tell me if I can provide any additional useful info to fix this.

2013-12-06 Thread MC Return
psusi, do you really have to ask on the unity-dev mailing list if compiz is
dead ?
Hahahaha migrating unity off of it hahahaha.

Attention, attention: This bug report's comments are just a joke...

Status in “emerald” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I hope Emerald does not get forgotten and someone can fix this,
because it is still by far the best window decorator available,
coupled with a great theme manager and possibilities for the power
user to adjust window decorations in both looks and functionality.

For example the window decoration can be individualized and upgraded
by adding buttons to make windows Sticky/Unsticky Shade/Unshade Roll-
Up/Down or by adding glow, changing fonts and adjusting
  shadows/transparency and colors.

All of those functionality and the great look with transparency and
glow cannot be matched by any other available window decorator out
there, so this is a big regression on Precise and Quantal for many
users, who used to use it on Ubuntu before.

Also it was designed to accomplish Compiz and Compiz without Emerald

really great in the past and still is.

psusi, we should maybe delete compiz from the Ubuntu repositories too
and replace it with unity8 awesomeness finally.

Then we could simply close all compiz related bugs and pat ourselves on
the shoulder, saying: Well done. Fixed.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I installed Intrepid fresh onto this laptop (HP Pavilion dv9540us),
and the alert sounds don't play. Instead, whenever I make one of the
rather common mistakes that cause an alert sound (such as hitting
backspace one too many times), there's a very loud, and very annoying,
  beep from the internal speaker.

If I go to system-preferences-sound, where I would expect to disable
the annoying beep, I find that the System Beep tab is now gone. I
agree with this decision - this is 2008, we should never be using the
internal speaker for anything. Especially not shutdown noises, where
it's not even obvious how to disable it.

After googling, however, I found that many others have this problem,
and strangely enough the solution is to click disable alert sounds
even though the alert sound itself never plays.

So, there are two bugs here then:
  1) The nice alert sound isn't used at all. I've never heard it in Ubuntu,
only annoying PC speaker beeps.
  2) We use the PC speaker instead of the alert sound, and disabling the PC
speaker is difficult since we no longer have the system beep tab.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1043759] Re: Display settings confirmation dialog appears out of the screen when disabling one monitor in a multi monitor setup

Display settings confirmation dialog appears out of the screen when

Bug description:
I have a two monitors setup with the laptop screen and external
monitor connected via VGA. This setup is illustrated in the attached
screenshot from the display settings applet in the control center.

  * Taking that setup as a starting point,
  * Place the display settings window on laptop monitor (bottom display)
  * Click on the off button for the laptop monitor to disable it
  * Click the apply button to confirm settings

  Expected result:
  * Laptop monitor turns off
  * Display settings window moves to the current workspace on the active monitor
  * Popup dialog asking if I want to keep this configuration or revert it
appears on same workspace as above

  Current result:
  * Laptop monitor turns off
  * Display settings window and popup dialog move to the workspace down from
the currently active one

In other words what is happening is that the windows that were in a
disabled monitor gets moved to a workspace that has the same relation
to the current one as the spatial relationship between monitors. For
example if the laptop monitor was setup as being on the right of the
external monitor, the window would be on the workspace to the right of
  the active one.

This is clever, but extremely hard to guess for the user, especially
if they don't normally use workspaces in their daily ubuntu usage.

What's worse is that there's a timeout on the confirmation dialog that
will keep ticking and will automatically revert the previous
configuration when it expires, confusing the user even more.

I don't mind keeping the clever behaviour but the display settings
window should be an exception to that rule and should always appear on
the active workspace on the active monitor. Or the workspace should
switch automatically to the one where the window ends up being placed
  in.

Bug description:
I have some automated tests that run eventstat to track the average
events/second for all running processes. I've been having trouble
getting the data to stabilize and showed it to Colin King recently,
who seems to have found the culprit. If you look at
  https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/eventstat-raring-desktop-amd64
-install-idle-vm/95/artifact/eventstat.csv you will see that on line
8, the events/second for compiz jumps dramatically. Move over a few
columns and you'll see that this sudden rise corresponds to gnome-
  screensaver activating.

This is on a freshly installed raring vm, so it should be the default
  screensaver.

Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 301174] Re: Use proper sound event instead of system beep

2013-07-08 Thread MC Return

  Use Case:

Dragging movie/audio files from nautilus to totem.

  Steps to Reproduce:

  1. open totem media player full screen
  2. open nautilus full screen
  3. browse to media files
  4. select some media files (e.g. a movie file) and move it to start a drag
and drop operation
  5. press Alt+Tab

  Observations:

  Nothing happens.

  Expected Results:

Alt+Tab should allow the user to switch tasks and preserve the drag
state, so the user can drag files from one application to another.

  Notes:

Drag and drop works if the applications are tiled to the left/right of
each other, or if they are windowed so it should work when they are
  full screen.

text corruption in terminals (xterm, urxvt) and emacs

Status in Compiz:

Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Using tmux with urxvt results in frequent screen corruption.

I am running tmux as tmux -2 to enable 256 colour mode and my
  .tmux.conf contains:

  set-option -g default-terminal screen-256color

... to enable 256 colours for apps running inside tmux. When
corruption occurs, neither clearing the screen with clear or tput
clear helps. What does seem to help is switching to another tmux
window and back to the problematic one.

This configuration used to work fine in natty.

I have some automated tests that run eventstat to track the average
events/second for all running processes. I've been having trouble
getting the data to stabilize and showed it to Colin King recently,
who seems to have found the culprit. If you look at
  https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/eventstat-raring-desktop-amd64
-install-idle-vm/95/artifact/eventstat.csv you will see that on line
8, the events/second for compiz jumps dramatically. Move over a few
columns and you'll see that this sudden rise corresponds to gnome-
  screensaver activating.

This is on a freshly installed raring vm, so it should be the default
  screensaver.

Bug description:
This bug is fixed in unity-3d since ubuntu 11.04.
It still exists in unity-2d and will never be fixed as unity-2d is no longer
supported since ubuntu 12.10 (see comment #343).

  *

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
  earlier releases as well.

For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012
unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1).
Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize the
window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE KNOWN (see
comment 320)?

  *

  *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
  dx-n-resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during
the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize
on all sides.

  *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
  https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

  *

  Workaround for Compiz/Unity: Alt+Middlemousebutton resizes a window
  most comfortably.

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  distance name=left_width value=3/
  distance name=right_width value=3/
  distance name=bottom_height value=3/

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

Multi-monitor: Mousepointer hangs when passing between monitors,

Bug description:
  [How to reproduce]

  1. Have a dual screen left-right config, with the Launcher just visible on
your main (left) monitor
  2. Make your mousepointer move between first and second display multiple times

  [What you would expect]

You should feel no barrier when doing that, as there is no Launcher on
  the right screen.

  [What actually happens]

The mousepointer sometimes hangs, when moving between those screens (both
directions are
  affected, left-right right-left).

Note: It always hangs once you stay longer than 1 second on each monitor.
It also starts blocking after one second if you move between your
screens rapidly.

@John Lea:
Of course those shortcuts are broken, because the default shortcuts for Ubuntu
(you decided those IIRC) are Ctrl+Super+LeftCursor and
Ctrl+Super+RightCursor ;) Try those.

lp:compiz trunk is even more advanced regarding Grid (Compiz 0.9.10-dev
only), see a video here:

Ctrl-Alt-Numpad 4 - Place window on the left side of the screen in
*semi-maximised* state (it is important that the window is actually
semi-maximised, not just the same size and position as a semi-
maximised window) Pressing a second time does nothing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 890747] Re: Keyboard shortcut - Ctrl Alt Del doesn't do what most people typing it would expect

2013-04-10 Thread MC Return
The Compiz solution for this would be the easiest and can be applied by
anyone interested:

0. Enable CCSM-Commands plugin
1. Open CCSM-Commands-Commands tab
2. Enter this into the Command line 0 field: gnome-system-monitor
3. Go to Key Bindings tab
4. Set Run command 0 to Ctrl+Alt+Del

Voila. You're done. Compiz will take over the shortcut and Ctrl+Alt+Del
will open the system monitor from now on.

Bug description:
If you want to restore a maximized or semi-maximized window Ctrl +
  Super + Down works.

If you want to restore a window placed in corners or top/bottom half
  Ctrl + Alt + R works.

If you press Ctrl + Super + Down for a window placed in corners or
top/bottom half, the window gets minimized instead of getting restored
  first.

Ctrl + Super + Down should replace Ctrl + Alt + R, so that restoring +
minimizing using Ctrl + Super + Down works for all windows the same
  way.

  Desired resolution:

  - Replace the Ctrl + Alt+ R shortcut with Ctrl + Alt + Down

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 968112] Re: Emerald (the original Compiz Window Decorator) not available in Precise and Quantal, while it was working on all Ubuntu versions before [needs-packaging]

Title:
Emerald (the original Compiz Window Decorator) not available in
Precise and Quantal, while it was working on all Ubuntu versions
  before [needs-packaging]

Also it was designed to accomplish Compiz and Compiz without Emerald
is not Compiz anymore, while the combination Compiz/Emerald/Unity was
really great in the past and still is (with 2 minor bugs, which still
  need to be fixed).

Here a few links showing the undaunted popularity of Emerald:

  http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/install-emerald-in-ubuntu-1110-oneiric.html

http://www.linux-geek.co.nz/2011/06/04/how-to-change-ubuntus-window-borders-with-emerald/

Fetching the source and compiling works, when done this way:

  git clone git://anongit.compiz.org/fusion/decorators/emerald
  cd emerald
  git checkout -b compiz++ origin/compiz++
  ./autogen.sh
  export LIBS=-ldl -lm ./configure
  make

Please package this great window decorator for Precise, Quantal and
  future versions of Ubuntu.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The fade-the-hidden-windows-back-in function (to restore the windows after
the desktop has been shown) is broken:
It pops in and pulses the opacity instead of smoothly fading it in.
This effect is visually very unpleasant.

  [Test Case]

  How to reproduce:
(Enable the slow animations function in the CCSM-Composite plug-in to clearly
notice what exactly is happening.)
Press Super+D to show the desktop.
Notice that visible windows fade out smoothly until the desktop is fully
visible.
Wait a few seconds to make sure the fade-out has finished.
Now press Super+D again to restore the hidden windows.

  What you would expect:
The windows should fade back in smoothly in the same manner they faded out.

  What actually happens:
The windows pop back in partially visible, then first fade out a bit until
they finally start to smoothly fade back in.

Also note that this popping/pulsing effect does not happen if you
invoke Super+D to restore the hidden windows before the fade-out
animation has finished - then the fade-in works as expected.

  [Regression Potential]

The fix for this bug just changes initial opacity when fading windows
back in and has no potential for any regressions.

The ImageMode module that line seems to be trying to import, however,
seems to import fine by itself:

  ok

(I've confirmed that ImageMode comes from the same place, as if I
remove PIL.pth again, the above line just returns the No module named

I've tried reinstalling python-imaging already. I note in any case the

  *

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
  earlier releases as well.

For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012
unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1).
Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize the
window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE KNOWN (see
comment 320)?

  *

  *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
  dx-n-resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything.

Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

The invisible border logic is only implemented in gtk-window-
decorator.

It would have to be implemented on a per-decorator basis.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the fast reply.
Seems like gtk-window-decorator is more advanced in this case than Emerald. :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 890747] Re: Keyboard shortcut - Ctrl Alt Del doesn't do what most people typing it would expect

2013-01-30 Thread MC Return
I thought a while about the best solution for this problem and came up
with this:

We can perfectly fix it without messing with Gnome itself:

First we will upgrade the Compiz Gnome Compatibility plug-in to also
deal with other gnome shortcuts (currently it just deals with
showMainMenu, showRunDialog, CommandScreenshot, CommandWindowScreenshot
and CommandTerminal).

This will also have the positive side-effect that all will be perfectly
configurable CCSM style, so the user will be easily able to modify everything
to your needs if it won't suit him, it will be possible to not just change the
shortcut, but also the command that is run, when hitting this key-combination.
The defaults will be the same as Gnome uses.

With another ubuntu-config.patch we will adjust the shortcut for
Ctrl+Alt+Del to open gnome-system-monitor/processes tab instead of
proposing a log out for Ubuntu/Unity only.

  1. Type Ctrl+Alt+Del.

What happens: In Unity, a mutant version of the Log Out dialog

What should happen: The nearest equivalent to the Windows Task Manager

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-01-27 Thread MC Return
** Description changed:

  *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-dx-n
  -resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything.

  *
+
+ Workaround for Compiz/Unity: Alt+Middlemousebutton resizes a window most
+ comfortably.

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  distance name=left_width value=3/
  distance name=right_width value=3/
  distance name=bottom_height value=3/

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by
this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid
by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all
applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open
right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is
that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which
usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best
fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around
each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing
(in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border
thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although
the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally
all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these
have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the
  position of the metacity team).

xnox, please look at comment #7.
I am running Emerald on Raring with latest Compiz/Unity and did so on Precise
and Quantal as well. It just needs packaging.

Title:
Emerald (the original Compiz Window Decorator) not available in
Precise and Quantal, while it was working on all Ubuntu versions
  before [needs-packaging]

Status in “emerald” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Also it was designed to accomplish Compiz and Compiz without Emerald
is not Compiz anymore, while the combination Compiz/Emerald/Unity was
really great in the past and still is (with 2 minor bugs, which still
  need to be fixed).

Here a few links showing the undaunted popularity of Emerald:

  http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/install-emerald-in-ubuntu-1110-oneiric.html

http://www.linux-geek.co.nz/2011/06/04/how-to-change-ubuntus-window-borders-with-emerald/

Fetching the source and compiling works, when done this way:

  git clone git://anongit.compiz.org/fusion/decorators/emerald
  cd emerald
  git checkout -b compiz++ origin/compiz++
  ./autogen.sh
  export LIBS=-ldl -lm ./configure
  make

Please package this great window decorator for Precise, Quantal and
  future versions of Ubuntu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1077427] Re: System randomly hangs. Sometimes when unattended, sometimes using firefox

2012-11-15 Thread John Mc
I ran some tests yesterday as this host was crashing too frequently and
unusable. I reloaded from scratch with a 12.10 x64 distro and disabled
UEFI and also created an XFS root disk partition as opposed to the
standard ext4 filesystem. Only Firefox was loaded. the Nvidia drivers
had not even been installed and X froze. I was able to ssh in and see
the Noveau errors in syslog. [scrollback truncated]... i was unable to
capture the errors today from yesterday's session.

I made some changes and my system is now running stable. Not a single
crash. My choices were to purchase a different graphics card (big
unknown) or to reload a know good OS.

$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS \n \l

Sorry ubuntu 12.XX

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 11.10

  1. Type Ctrl+Alt+Del.

What happens: In Unity, a mutant version of the Log Out dialog
  appears.

What should happen: The nearest equivalent to the Windows Task Manager
appears. Currently, that is the Processes tab of System Monitor.

(Implementing this probably would invalidate bug 485740.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 976006] Re: zenity crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID()

2012-04-07 Thread MC Return
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 969031 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/969031

Additional information:
I had a problem with xorg-edgers-PPA, which made X crash. After upgrading
xorg-server this is now fixed again. It was the first boot after this fix, when
Zenity crashed.
