[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2035114] Re: zenity 3.24.1 --question argument does not return a value in ubuntu 22.04

2023-09-11 Thread Manfred Hampl
See the man pages:
"... and return (either in the return code, or on standard output) the users
input."

The answer to "--question" is returned in the return code, not in
standard output.

user@ubuntu:~$ zenity --question --title="Answer the question." --text="Yes or
No?" # answering yes
user@ubuntu:~$ echo $?
0
user@ubuntu:~$ zenity --question --title="Answer the question." --text="Yes or
No?" # answering no
user@ubuntu:~$ echo $?

Title:
  zenity 3.24.1 --question argument does not return a value in ubuntu
  22.04

Status in zenity package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  '--question' attribute in zenity is not returning a value after the user
interacts with the message box. It should be returning a 0, 1, or 5 depending
on what the user selects. Other forms that zenity produces do return the
appropriate values.
  tom@BossUbuntui9:~$ zenity --version
  3.42.1
  tom@BossUbuntui9:~$ zenity --calendar
  09/12/2024
  tom@BossUbuntui9:~$ zenity --question --title="Answer the question."
--text="Yes or No?"
  tom@BossUbuntui9:~$
  This is a paste from my terminal. As you can see the --version and
--calendar arguments return the appropriate values. When I use the --question
argument, it does not matter whether I press yes or no, I get nothing.

  If i use the Intel-Graphiccard, everything works well, i can suspend and
resume as often as i'd like.
  Edit: As soon as I switched (switch to ATI and back to Intel, the below
problem happens on Intel-GPU too).
  If i use the ATI-Graphiccard i can suspend (wich takes a longer time than
with the Intel one) however I can't resume. I get a blank/black screen and
can't change brightness. Plus I can't switch to any tty.

  I've tried this instructions to find an error:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
  but it dosn't seem to bring relevant informations (however, I'll add the
dmesg.txt to this bugreport)

  PS: to switch between graphiccards, I use "vga_switcheroo" and i have
  "vanilla"-ubuntu, no third party software.

The pkg-website only provides a searchable index on the packages in

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1965942] Re: Netmask should be replaced by Prefix?

2022-03-22 Thread Manfred Hampl
My understanding was that the limits for directly reachable computers in
IPv4 is called "netmask" and in IPv6 the equivalent is called "prefix".

gnome-comtrol-center 1:3.36.5-0ubuntu3 on Ubuntu focal correctly shows
these different labels for manual settings in IPv4 and IPv6.

In my opinion the only thing to be done for this bug report is adding
"prefix" to the documentation in https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-
help/net-fixed-ip-address.html.en

Instead of

Type in the IP Address and Gateway, as well as the appropriate Netmask.

it has to be something like

Type in the IP Address and Gateway, as well as the appropriate Netmask
(for IPv4) respectively Prefix (for IPv6).

  The link to the documentation page is

  https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/net-fixed-ip-

  Netmask, which is not shown on the relevant part of the Ubuntu 20.04
  Settings page, but there is a box headed "Prefix". Should this replace
  the reference to Netmask?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1962043] Re: libwacom9 : depends on : libwacom-common

2022-02-28 Thread Manfred Hampl
The cause is that both libwacom2 and libwacom9 depend on libwacom-common
in the version identical to the libwacom(number) version.

I assume that you have libwacom2 and libwacom-common installed from a
previous Ubuntu release, or a older version in Jammy that meanwhile has
been superseded.

sudo apt install libwacom9 libwacom-common=2.1.0-2
or
sudo apt install libwacom9 libwacom2-
or
sudo apt remove libwacom2
should help.

see also
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libwacom/+question/700653

Eventually a "breaks:libwacom2" clause in libwcom9's control file could
help.

2021-04-08 Thread Manfred Hampl
/dev/sde2 916G 870G 0 100% /

Your root file system is (almost) full.
You might run the command
du -schx /*
to see the directories that use most space, and then dig further to identify
which files/directories consume too much space and do clean-up.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1922290] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in update_dbus_opened_locations()

2021-04-06 Thread Manfred Hampl
to the "confusing description":

Maybe a misinterpretation on my side. I booted the system, logged in,
and immediately received a pop-up informing me of a crash. This might
have been caused by the presence of a not-yet-reported crash file from
an earlier session, although I cannot remember that I have executed
"nautilus --version" earlier.

Only upon seeing the crash report and the bug report that has been
created, I executed "nautilus --version" (or maybe executed it again)
and with that command I reliably can produce that crash again.

Meanwhile I have downloaded the hirsute-beta-iso from March 31.
Booting it in "Try Ubuntu" mode in VirtualBox also reliably crashed when
running "nautilus --version".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1867406] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Dock/Taskbar icons

2020-03-14 Thread Manfred Hampl
My experience with that matter and how to reproduce:

Ubuntu 20.04 (development) installed.

Ubuntu dock bar at the left (or right):
You can easily re-arrange the icons by dragging one of them up or down with
your mouse and pressed left mouse button.
When hovering between two icons, they slide up and down to create space for
dropping the icon that you want to move.

Now relocate the dock bar to the bottom edge of the screen with
Settings - appearance - position of the dock: bottom

Now when attempting to move an icon, the other icons do not leave space
for dropping the moving icon, but they move somewhat in groups.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1781428] Re: please enable snap mediation support

2020-01-23 Thread Manfred Hampl
Now with the updated snap packages published, (see Bug #1856196 ), when
will the pulseaudio packages be re-published?

Everyone on Xenial and Bionic who did a package update between
2019-12-11 and 2019-12-12 now has orphaned pulseaudio packages
installed, blocking the installation of additional pulseaudio packages!
see Bug #1858164 Bug #1858164

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
  please enable snap mediation support

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in pulseaudio source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed
Status in pulseaudio source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Ubuntu 16.10 added rudimentary snap support to disable audio recording if the
connecting process was a snap. By Ubuntu 18.04, something changed in the build
resulting in 'Enable Snappy support: no' with audio recording no longer being
mediated by pulseaudio (access to the pulseaudio socket continued to be
mediated by snapd's apparmor policy). This resulted in any application with the
pulseaudio interface connected to be able to also record. Ubuntu 16.04 never
had mediation patches and always allowed recording when the pulseaudio
interface was connected.

  To correct this situation but not regress existing behavior, Ubuntu
  19.04's pulseaudio was updated patch to allow playback to all
  connected clients (snaps or not), record by classic snaps (see bug
  1787324) and record by strict mode snaps if either the pulseaudio or
  new-in-snapd-2.41 audio-record interfaces were connected. With this
  change, snapd is in a position to migrate snaps to the new audio-
  playback and audio-record interfaces and properly mediate audio
  recording (see https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/upcoming-pulseaudio-
  interface-deprecation/13418).

  The patch to pulseaudio consists of adding a module, enabling it in
  default.pa and then when it is enabled, pulseaudio when faced with a
  record operation will, when the connecting process is a snap (ie, its
  security label (ie, apparmor label) starts with 'snap.'), query snapd
  via its control socket to ask if the snap is classic and if not,
  whether the pulseaudio or audio-record interfaces are connected.
  Adjusting pulseaudio in the manner does not require coordination with
  any release of snapd. It does need a newer version of snapd-glib,
  which was recently updated to 1.49 in the last SRU.

  [Test Case]

  IMPORTANT: if updating pulseaudio while the session is running, either
  need to reboot for the test or kill pulseaudio so it can restart with
  the new snap policy

  For unconfined applications:
  $ paplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav && echo "yes"
  yes

  $ rm -f /tmp/out.wav ; parecord /tmp/out.wav && echo "yes"  # ctrl-c to stop
recording
  ^Cyes

  $ paplay /tmp/out.wav && echo "yes"
  yes

  For confined, non-snap applications:
  $ sudo apt-get install evince

  $ aa-exec -p /usr/bin/evince -- paplay
  /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav && echo yes

  $ rm -f /tmp/out.wav ; aa-exec -p /usr/bin/evince -- parecord /tmp/out.wav &&
echo "yes" # ctrl-c to stop recording
  ^Cyes

  $ aa-exec -p /usr/bin/evince -- paplay /tmp/out.wav && echo "yes"
  yes

  For classic snaps:
  $ sudo snap install test-snapd-classic-confinement --classic

  $ snap run --shell test-snapd-classic-confinement

  $ cat /proc/self/attr/current # verify we are classic confined
  snap.test-snapd-classic-confinement.test-snapd-classic-confinement (complain)

  $ paplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav && echo "yes"
  yes

  $ rm -f /tmp/out.wav ; parecord /tmp/out.wav && echo "yes"  # ctrl-c to stop
recording
  ^Cyes

  $ paplay /tmp/out.wav && echo "yes"
  yes

  $ exit # out of snap run --shell

  For strict snaps with pulseaudio:
  $ sudo snap install test-snapd-pulseaudio --edge

  $ snap connections test-snapd-pulseaudio
  Interface   Plug  Slot Notes
  pulseaudio  test-snapd-pulseaudio:pulseaudio  :pulseaudio  -

  $ test-snapd-pulseaudio.play --help # ensure SNAP dirs are created
  ...

  $ sudo cp /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav /var/snap/test-snapd-
  pulseaudio/common/

  $ test-snapd-pulseaudio.play /var/snap/test-snapd-pulseaudio/common/Noise.wav
&& echo yes
  xcb_connection_has_error() returned true
  yes

  (note, the xcb_connection_has_error() message is due to the x11
  interface not being connecting which is unrelated to mediation. x11 is
  left out to ensure that just audio-playback/audio-record are tested)

  $ test-snapd-pulseaudio.record /tmp/out.wav && echo yes # should pass
  ...
  ^Cyes

  $ test-snapd-pulseaudio.play /tmp/out.wav && echo yes
  ...
  yes

  For strict snaps with audio-playback/audio-record:
  $ sudo snap refresh core --candidate # make sure have 2.41. 'install' on 16.04
  $ sudo snap install test-snapd-audio-record --edge

  $ snap

  Firefox pushed a fix via 'Studies' option, but this seems to be disabled by
default in Ubuntu builds?

  When this is disabled, no update is getting pushed!

  Think we need to get a fix into repositories asap :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1751460] Re: [regression] deja-dup-monitor crashed with SIGSEGV in Gigacage::<lambda()>::operator()

2018-03-21 Thread Manfred Hampl
Looking at Jeremy Bicha's error message

org.gnome.Epiphany.desktop[12949]: FATAL: Could not allocate gigacage
memory with maxAlignment = 34359738368, totalSize = 103079215104.

"totalSize = 103079215104" stands for a memory allocation of 96 GiB.
What the heck is webkit2gtk doing with so much memory?

Bug description:
  Impact
  --
  webkit2gtk 2.20 adds a new security feature called the Gigacage that uses an
extremely large virtual memory address space (much larger than available
physical memory).

  Deja Dup's monitor background service had "ulimit -v 100" (that's
  1 GB) set as a workaround for a memory leak issue that the developer
  was unable to reproduce.

  After upgrading to the new webkit2gtk version, Deja Dup's monitor
  service will crash because of that virtual memory limit.

  Test Case
  -
  Install the deja-dup update.
  Install the webkit2gtk update from a PPA (not prepared yet).
  Log out. Log in.
  After a few minutes, check /var/crash/ for any Deja Dup crash reports.

  Regression Potential

  This could reintroduce the memory leak bug, but otherwise this is a minimal
fix. Even if that happens, it's better than the service refusing to run.

Also your problem has nothing to do with deja-dup and webkit and is probably
caused by bug #1754564

In fact just the date/time information in the header comment differs,
all other contents of the 20-sane.hwdb file are identical.

Doesn't the first grep command in is_module_blacklisted need adding a ^
identical to the second one -

"grep -G \"blacklist.*%
vs.
"grep -G \"^blacklist.*%

to avoid matching commented-out entries (like "#backlist noveau" etc.)?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1461113] Re: Where is Firefox 38.0.1 ?!

2015-07-10 Thread Manfred Hampl
What about precise?

http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-2656-1/ does not contain any information
about Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-
security/cve/pkg/firefox.html lists 23 open CVEs for the precise version
of firefox.

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ubuntu/ppa seems
to contain a version that closes the vulnerabilities (firefox -
39.0+build5-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), why isn't that copied to the official
repositories?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1460487] Re: unknown

2015-07-05 Thread Manfred Hampl
There was a recent comment from the bug reporter in bug #948053

i wanna have the nvidia-173 cause i can't have a good resolution
whithout

If the display hardware is

GraphicsCard:
  NVIDIA Corporation G72 [GeForce 7500 LE] [10de:01dd] (rev a1) (prog-if 00
[VGA controller])

as shown in this bug report, then the nvidia-graphics-
drivers-304-updates package should contain the correct driver.

As far as I know there is no working 173 driver available for Ubuntu
12.04.3 and up, but the GeForce 7500 LE hardware should be well
supported by the 304 driver. see
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/304.125/README/supportedchips.html

Try installing the package nvidia-304-updates

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1414333] Re: libcairo-dev depencencies in Utopic

2015-02-27 Thread Manfred Hampl
This is a regression bug caused by the fact that for correction of bug
#1391857 a package cairo 1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1.1 was created in
trusty only but not in utopic.

See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cairo

Steps for duplicating that bug:

On a trusty implementation with -updates enabled install libcairo2 from
trusty-updates (version 1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1.1), but not libcariro2-dev.
Upgrade from trusty to utopic
Try installing libcariro2-dev
This fails with

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libcairo2-dev : Depends: libcairo2 (= 1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1) but
1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1.1 is to be installed
   Depends: libcairo-gobject2 (= 1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1) but
1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1.1 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Proposals for solution: copy the trusty package to utopic or backport the 1.14
version from vivid to utopic.

This problem has gained importance, because the ...ubuntu1.1 version has
meanwhile been moved from trusty-proposed to trusty-updates and will be
part of a standard trusty implementation now.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1330067] Re: outdated package causing crashes

2014-06-20 Thread Manfred Hampl
Ok, it seem that the version 1.3.1-3 in utopic does no more have that problem.
But how can an updated version be delivered to trusty (and eventually saucy and
precise)?

Should an SRU request or a backport request be issued?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1307238] Re: Update Manager is broken

2014-04-14 Thread Manfred Hampl
I doubt the validity of this bug report. The text has been copy/pasted
from the question doucment https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/software-center/+question/222801 that is more than a year old, and that
is aready solved.

In that question document the command sequence
sudo apt-get install --download-only libssl1.0.0:amd64 libssl1.0.0:i386
sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libssl1.0.0_1.0.1-4ubuntu5.6_*.deb
resolved the problem.

To the reporter of that bug: What is your name? John or Kathy?
What is the output of the following terminal commands:

uname -a
lsb_release -a
sudo dpkg --audit

2014-02-01 Thread Manfred Hampl
Potential workaround:

Open a terminal and issue the command

gksudo gksudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/info/fglrx-pxpress.postinst

This will most probably ask for the password and then open an editor
with the post installation script loaded.

Scroll down to the end of the file and then about ten lines back up
until you find a line that reads

   has_aticonfig=$(which aticonfig)

modify that line into

   has_aticonfig=$(which aticonfig || true)

save the file and close the editor

finally execute the terminal command

sudo dpkg --configure -a

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1219998] Re: package fglrx-pxpress 0.3~hybrid0.0.1 failed to install/upgrade: sub-processo script post-installation instalado retornou estado de saída de erro 1

2014-01-31 Thread Manfred Hampl
It seems to me that the post installation script aborts with status 1 if
fglrx is  not installed.

There is in postinst:
# Make sure we use the discrete card
has_aticonfig=$(which aticonfig)
if [ X$has_aticonfig != X ]; then
aticonfig --px-dgpu || true
fi

At least on my system if I try it in a shell
has_aticonfig=$(which aticonfig)
gives an exit code of 1 (I do not have an aticonfig executable anywhere in my
path).

Wouldn't it be reasonable to change it to

has_aticonfig=$(which aticonfig || true)

to cater for systems where aticonfig is not present (due to fglrx not
being installed)?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 722171] Re: Some Launchpad links to source packages with epoch don't work in Chromium

The issue has been reported to Launchpad itself with bug # 973212
So this might be marked as duplicate.

  Hi

  Some source package links from:
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/git
  are working and others aren't

  The Latest upload link:
  a href=/ubuntu/+source/git/1:1.7.4.1-11:1.7.4.1-1/a
  works, but the Natty Narwhal link to the latest version of the source
package
  a href=1:1.7.4.1-1img src=/@@/package-source /1:1.7.4.1-1/a
  doesn't: if I open it, the address bar shows:
  %31:1.7.4.1-1

  Cheers,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1030504] Re: Please ship pkg-config file libxul.pc in firefox-dev

2012-12-18 Thread Manfred Hampl
** Summary changed:

- Please ship pkg-config file lixbul.pc in firefox-dev
+ Please ship pkg-config file libxul.pc in firefox-dev

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
  Please ship pkg-config file libxul.pc in firefox-dev

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  In the firefox-dev package for Ubuntu Oneiric there used to be a pkg-
  config file for XULRunner, namely /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libxul.pc.

  This allowed binary extensions to be configured and built in a sane
  way.

  In the Precise version of firefox-dev, this file has been removed due
  to the Removing XULRunner from oneiric effort [1].

  Unfortunately, this effectively breaks proper build configuration for
  third-party binary extensions, such as mozilla-gnome-keyring [2] and
  forces the Ubuntu package [3] to use hardcoded paths.

  I don't see any point in hiding the XULRunner interface in Ubuntu, since
this is what locks Ubuntu out for interesting binary firefox extensions.
  Other distributions such as Fedora and Debian still ship the libxul.pc file.

  Please include the libxul.pc file in the firefox-dev package.
