Status in unity-2d package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This seems like a recent regression on Oneiric (or perhaps I haven't
  noticed it before):

On resume from suspend, the contents of the desktop are often briefly
visible before being hidden behind the lock screen. This is a
security problem if there happens to be sensitive information on the
  screen.

  =Analysis from mdeslaur=
  This is likely what happens:

1- Something grabs mouse: ie: virtual machine window, or GTK menu in an
application or an indicator
2- Screensaver attempts to start, but cannot get exclusive lock on mouse
  3- DPMS turns monitor black
4- User moves mouse, which turns the screen back on
5- Mouse movement causes mouse to get ungrabbed by vm window or gtk menu
6- Screensaver can now grab mouse, and starts

This is all related to the fact that X does not have an API that will
let the screensaver tell an application to release mouse and keyboard
  grabs.

Title:
Desktop contents displayed on resume, before lock screen is shown

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am running 14.04. When I resume from sleep, the contents of my
desktop (including any open windows, emails, etc) are displayed
onscreen briefly before the unlock screen is shown. This potentially
allows an attacker to view the contents of a locked screen.

  To reproduce:
  1) Suspend a machine, e.g. by closing the lid
  2) Resume the machine

  Expected results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the screensaver unlock screen.

  Actual results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the set of open windows that
were displayed before the machine was put to sleep. After a second or two, the
unlock screen is drawn and you have to enter a password to unlock the machine.

This is reproducible on my system.

(I'm not sure where in the stack this problem really is, so I'm
  guessing and picking on unity)

I have a Lenovo T410s laptop with Intel graphics and I use it with a
dock with two 1920x1200 monitors connected. I'm running up-to-date
Natty. If I boot the laptop with it already docked, everything works
perfectly: the two external monitors are used and I get a nice unity
  desktop spanning my 3840x1200 space.

However, if I boot with the laptop undocked, log in, and then dock the
laptop, it breaks pretty badly. Only one monitor is lit up, and I
just get a black screen with a mouse pointer there -- no desktop
background, windows, toolbars, or anything. Once it's in this state,
it doesn't seem possible to recover -- if I undock the laptop again,
the internal screen just stays black with a pointer.

When the laptop is in a working state, undocking it sort of works...
the desktop switches to the laptop screen, but then redocking it acts
just like docking as described above.

It asked me to initialize the iPod. I selected the model: Nano Touch (6th
generation) - 8GB Green
Put in a random name 'Apod' and clicked Initialize

At this point I assumed it would initialize and then let me put music
  on it.

  4) It produced the error box: Unable to initialize new iPod Unspported
checksum type
After this the iPod shows up and it can be synched (there is an error with a
few of the file formats which won't be added).
When I look through the iPod it shows no music, but when I look in rhythmbox
it shows the 2.1Gb of music added.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

I don't think this really is actually fixed in Unity in Precise, or
rather, bizarrely, it seems intermittently fixed. This morning, it was
working ok, but now I have to be exactly over the very narrow border to
resize the windows.

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  distance name=left_width value=3/
  distance name=right_width value=3/
  distance name=bottom_height value=3/

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize
on all sides.

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  distance name=left_width value=3/
  distance name=right_width value=3/
  distance name=bottom_height value=3/

Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

hm, launchpad isn't linking it, but https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-

USB is certainly subject to device disconnections and reconnections, and
definitely results in re-registrations on suspend/resume.

This is true, but it also seemed to be happening even when I had not
recently disconnected/reconnected or suspended. Perhaps they were
different bugs.

Wow, so this is happening in ~Friday's Oneiric in a very interesting
way: the whole screen is visible and the mouse pointer moves, for
several seconds before the dialog appears. It's quite possible to

Please describe how you are suspending the laptop. Is it suspending by
itself? Are you closing the lid? Are you using the indicator to trigger
the suspend? Does the issue occur when you do any of those three, or is
 one in particular causing it?

Marc, as I said above, the problem occurs whether I use a lid close,
key, or the menu.

Yes, I saw that, hoped it would fix this, and I'm pretty sure it did

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 701018] Re: a11y panel should have an option to turn on gtk-entry-password-hint-timeout

2011-10-12 Thread Martin Pool
Some people (including me, in the past) have physical conditions that
mean they type with a higher-than-usual error rate. Entering a typical
password without confirmation that the correct key was pressed is
difficult and runs a risk of being locked out through repeated wrong
attempts.

If it was in Security rather than Accessibility that would also be fine.
Since the feature exists, it would just be nice to make it easier to
reach than editing gtkrc.

This may be either network-manager or kernel, depending on triage...

I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop.

Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of
  Ubuntu.

However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get
very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss,
very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically
  unusable.

I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar
logs from the T500 also if required.

As soon as I swap back to either 10.10 or 11.04 I get perfect
wireless, it's only on 11.10 that I get problems, this would suggest
it's not hardware or configuration on my side.

I have had this since first installing 11.10 which was a little after

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 842219] [NEW] date/time menu lets you start evolution from the greeter screen

2011-09-05 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

On current oneiric, at the lightdm login screen:

1- click the clock in the top right
2- click 'add event'
3- evolution's first-run wizard starts up

That's kind of cool but probably not really a good idea (and it can't
take keyboard focus so isn't all that useful.)

** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 830756] Re: pointless revert/close dialog

2011-08-21 Thread Martin Pool
This actually consistently comes up when I click on a network; then it's
also impossible to close the network properties window by clicking the
lower-right 'close' button.
