This is a security problem if there happens to be sensitive information on the screen. =Analysis from mdeslaur= This is likely what happens: 1- Something grabs mouse: ie: virtual machine window, or GTK menu in an application or an indicator 2- Screensaver attempts to start, but cannot get exclusive lock on mouse 3- DPMS turns monitor black 4- User moves mouse, which turns the screen back on 5- Mouse movement causes mouse to get ungrabbed by vm window or gtk menu 6- Screensaver can now grab mouse, and starts This is all related to the fact that X does not have an API that will let the screensaver tell an application to release mouse and keyboard grabs. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1280300] Re: Desktop contents displayed on resume, before lock screen is shown
This security bug has been open for 4.5 years now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1280300 Title: Desktop contents displayed on resume, before lock screen is shown Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I am running 14.04. When I resume from sleep, the contents of my desktop (including any open windows, emails, etc) are displayed onscreen briefly before the unlock screen is shown. This potentially allows an attacker to view the contents of a locked screen. To reproduce: 1) Suspend a machine, e.g. by closing the lid 2) Resume the machine Expected results: Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the screensaver unlock screen. Actual results: Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the set of open windows that were displayed before the machine was put to sleep. After a second or two, the unlock screen is drawn and you have to enter a password to unlock the machine. This is reproducible on my system. I'm running up-to-date Natty. If I boot the laptop with it already docked, everything works perfectly: the two external monitors are used and I get a nice unity desktop spanning my 3840x1200 space. However, if I boot with the laptop undocked, log in, and then dock the laptop, it breaks pretty badly. Only one monitor is lit up, and I just get a black screen with a mouse pointer there -- no desktop background, windows, toolbars, or anything. Once it's in this state, it doesn't seem possible to recover -- if I undock the laptop again, the internal screen just stays black with a pointer. When the laptop is in a working state, undocking it sort of works... the desktop switches to the laptop screen, but then redocking it acts just like docking as described above. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 701018] Re: a11y panel should have an option to turn on gtk-entry-password-hint-timeout
Some people (including me, in the past) have physical conditions that mean they type with a higher-than-usual error rate. Entering a typical password without confirmation that the correct key was pressed is difficult and runs a risk of being locked out through repeated wrong attempts. bug 833479 might be a dupe? I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop. Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of Ubuntu. However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss, very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically unusable. I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar logs from the T500 also if required. As soon as I swap back to either 10.10 or 11.04 I get perfect wireless, it's only on 11.10 that I get problems, this would suggest it's not hardware or configuration on my side.
