[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-11-14 Thread Matthias Niess
Maybe there are separate issues. Booting to a black screen after update
happened on three of my machines (2 nvidia, 1 AMD). On all of them it
was enough to remove the binary drivers, reboot and reinstall them.

The solution is actually easier than #60. You just need to remove and
reinstall the nvidia drivers (or amd if you used those).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1666681] Re: Drop interactive_search.patch (type-ahead search)

2017-07-24 Thread Matthias Niess
Hey Carlos @csoriano,

sorry for replying to such an old bug but I didn't know where else to do
this. You mentioned use-case covered by search, so here are my usecases
not covered by search (as far as I know).

In research projects you often have big datasets. So e.g., when I get
data from an MRT-scan with a couple of thousand images, tracker is out
of the question. I need to access the data immediately and can't wait
for indexing.

When I want to navigate to images starting with "PBX" I just enter that
for type-ahead and Nautilus jumps directly to the first file starting
with that while still showing me the files before and after (according
to the current sort-order). Search doesn't navigate, it searches for
"PBX" and shows me all files containing PBX anywhere (after a long wait
because the files aren't indexed, yet).

Sometimes I need to see files in the context of their creation time.
With type-ahead I just sort by date and navigate to a specific file to
see which files where created before and after the file in question.

Researcher who are already using newer versions of Gnome without type-
ahead often just use PgUp/PgDown until the see what they need instead of
directly navigating there.

You see the pattern: search can't replace navigation. They are two
seperate things.

Thanks for taking the time to reply here. If you're interested in
discussing this further, just let me know where.

Title:
  Drop interactive_search.patch (type-ahead search)

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Nautilus dropped the popular type-ahead search feature years ago.
Ubuntu has been carrying a patch to revert that change. See bug
1164016 for the original LP bug and patch proposal.

Nautilus is now under very active development. During the 3.22 cycle,
that patch needed to be rebased. I tried to do it and what I came up
with caused a crash (it didn't really crash for me, but ricotz and
some others experienced it) and the first letter typed activated type-
ahead search but the first letter was dropped. In other words, you
would need to type "ddow" to activate the Downloads folder instead of
just "dow" like in previous releases. (LP: #1635988)

I did that rebase in October 2016 and no one has stepped up then to
  improve the patch.

The Nautilus maintainer csoriano has said that the slots and views
changed significantly during 3.22 and will likely be refactored more
  in the future.

If there's no one available to maintain the patch, unfortunately,
we'll eventually have to drop the patch to not be stuck on an ancient
  version of Nautilus.

I am proposing that we do this at the start of the 17.10 development
cycle. This gives 6 months for a developer to step up and try to fix
the patch and 12 months before 18.04 LTS.

  Other Items
  ===
  - For better performance with the built-in search, we need to reconsider
avoiding tracker in Unity (LP: #176)

  - There is an option in Preferences for users to disable searching in
subfolders. I don't think we want to do that by default but maybe it
  can help some people.

The current Nautilus 3.24 packaging is in the GNOME3 Staging PPA with
  this patch now disabled.

[SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

When first boot into Unity desktop, English keyboard layout is active
while all other parts of the system language settings are set to
  another language (e.g. German).

The bug is properly addressed in newer upstream releases in Vivid, but
the changes is too intrusive and not suitable for being back ported in
SRU. And changing the default to use system keyboard layout solves the
  problem.

  [Test Case]

  1. Set the system language to something other than English, e.g. German.
  2. Create a new user, log in to the Unity desktop of the new user.
  3. Check the keyboard layout, it should be German instead of English.

  [Regression Potential]

Since this changes the default value of the keyboard layout settings
by using system defined as default, it avoids using ibus's built-in
keyboard layout related functionality, so that this could be a
regression for users rely on this certain behavior (e.g. use English
keyboard while want to keep the system language settings to German),
but such behavior is not expected for normal usage.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-11-20 Thread Matthias Niess
We already figured out how this was introduced and how to fix it. We
just need someone to actually create the fix.

The ibus package changed the default setting of desktop.ibus.general
.use-system-keyboard-layout from true to false. Ever since this dconf
setting was introduced, we had this error.

For existing installations you need to change this manually either with
dconf-editor or ibus-setup.

For fresh installs we need to patch the package to revert this setting
back to its old default.

Title:
[SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

Status in ibus package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in ibus source package in Trusty:
  Triaged

2015-10-11 Thread Matthias Niess
How to test if the proposed package fixes this:

1. Install proposed package
2. create new user
3. login as the new user
4. run dconf read /desktop/ibus/general/use-system-keyboard-layout

The result should be 'true'. I don't have a machine with 14.04 anymore
so I can't test this. Please folks, lets finally get this fixed. For all
non-english users this is a major annoyance.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-08-06 Thread Matthias Niess
@andrew Installing the package won't fix the bug for your current user.
It will change the default for newly created users. If you want to fix
it for your current user you just need to change the setting by hand
by opening ibus-setup and checking the setting to Use system keyboard
layout.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-07-21 Thread Matthias Niess
I can definately verify (for at least 100 machines) that changing the
settings DOES work. What I can't verify is that this patch modifies the
default setting (or updates existing installations). If anyone can
verify this, please do so. This is such an annoying bug that I need to
fix on every single non-US Ubuntu installation by changing the ibus-
setting

Bug description:

When switching focus from one window to another, the target window may
become blank. See the attached screenshot, where I opened two gnome-
terminals and clicked on their titlebars alternately - the issue was
triggered after about 5-10 clicks. I've had this happen on other
appications too, e.g. software-centre, empathy, etc.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE:

  [ Test Case ]

Verification requires an nVidia GPU with proprietary drivers. The
problem can not reliably be reproduced at will, only after some time
(depending on resident GPU memory and usage) and even then only
  randomly.

  1. Minimize a window
  2. Initiate Scale and deactivate it again (press Super+W to show all windows
and then press it again to go back to normal)
  3. Click the window icon on the launcher to maximize it again.
  4. The window contents will be white, black, or transparent depending on the
Ubuntu version

  [ Regression Potential ]

It is unlikely this change has the potential to introduce new
  regressions.

  [ Other Info ]

Fix was cherry-picked from the Ubuntu Vivid Vervet dev relase where
it has been in use for some weeks without problem.

@hennekn
I can confirm that changing the ibus-setting solves this for me, too. I'll help
with builing a fixed package (got a little experience with that now). What
exact package (and file) is responsible?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-27 Thread Matthias Niess
I removed the duplicate status. The bugs might be related, but we don't
know that. In the other report people have the problem after every
reboot. In this bug it happens while being logged in. As the bug occurs
randomly, I cannot yet confirm if the workaround from the other bug does
it.

If it helps: This problem was introduced with 13.10.

I have 100+ employees who have to reset the keyboard settings on a daily
basis since the upgrade to 14.04. I'm pretty sure that for everyone who
uses Ubuntu in a non-US corporate environment, this has highest
priority.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-14 Thread Matthias Niess
This also happens when there is only one keyboard layout installed. It
still randomly switches to en_us. This shouldn't be classified as low
importance since it is a major problem, especially in corporate
environments. I have this happening on dozens of machines and have lots
of annoyed users who have to use the workaround of switching layouts
forth and back on a daily basis.

Bug description:
Just upgraded from 12.04 (raring) to 12.10 (saucy) and keyboard layout keeps
changing from pt_br to what I think is en_us.
It seems random so I don't know what trigger this, but sometimes just
alt-tabbing is enough to mess with keyboard layout in one of the windows.
I already removed the en_us from my keyboard sources, double checked the use
of one source for all windows, and even removed accelerators to switch between
layouts but none have worked.

Status in “libimobiledevice” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The latest libimobiledevice release 1.1.5 is a year old and does not
support iOS7 devices. Most iOS devices have been updated to iOS7 by
now, so currently the library is broken in functionality for most
users. The git snapshot has been tested to work, but there seems to be
no new upstream release being prepared for the time being.

The new git snapshot includes several fixes, including the security
fix that was previously patched on top of 1.1.5 in Ubuntu.

Packaging branch merge request attached to this bug report.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1207812] Re: iOS 7, Trust Prompt Looping

2014-03-12 Thread Matthias Niess
My packages are probably not up to standards. But for hardware-
enablement alone this should be fixed in trusty. There won't be a
release of libimobiledevice anytime soon that fixes this and the current
version cannot be fixed with a trivial patch. So the only solution would
be using a package build from git master.

This problem is still present in 13.10 and trusty. As long as you use
the affected nvidia chipset on the motherboard. I upgraded the computer
I have with this motherboard just to see if the bug is still there. I
won't be upgrading it anymore. So I can't give any more feedback and

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1236601] Re: wrong background color when editing icons on desktop

2013-11-05 Thread Matthias Niess
So as far as I can see this only happens when renaming files on the
Desktop. As files on the Desktop are not supported anymore by Gnome,
this is probably a wontfix from their perspective. Just saying we
shouldn't expect much help from upstream with this if I'm not totally
wrong.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-09 Thread Matthias Niess
I still get the feeling that you don't see the seriousness of this bug.
Any drive-by browser-exploit can now escalate to root privileges because
of this. Most Ubuntu users are running it with their admin account (that
has sudo privileges). Running the wrong script or visiting the wrong
website will be enough.

Bug description:
Under unity and cinnamon, it is possible for a user to turn off
network-syncronized time and then change the time on the system. It is
also possible to cat /var/log/auth.log and find the last time a user
authenticated with sudo, along with which pty they used. If a user had
used a terminal and successfully authenticated with sudo anytime in
the past, and left the sudo file in /var/lib/sudo/username/, a
malicious user could walk up to an unlocked, logged in machine and
gain sudo without knowing the password for the computer.

To do this, a user would only need to launch a few terminals, figure
out which pty they were on via tty, find the an instance in
/var/log/auth.log where sudo was used on that PTY, and set the clock
to that time. Once this is done, they can run (for example) sudo -s
and have a full access terminal.

  1) This has been observed on Ubuntu 13.04, and may work on other versions.
  2) This may have an effect on various window managers, but I confirmed it on
Unity and Cinnamon
  3) I expected to have to authenticate when I changed the time and date, as I
do on Gnome and KDE. I also expected to be denied permission to auth.log
  4) I was able to change the system time to whatever I wanted, and view
auth.log. This was sufficient to access sudo without having to type my password.

Note: This bug also affects any version of OS X, though the mechanism
is different. Some versions don't require you to authenticate to
change the time through the GUI, but some do. No version I've seen
requires authentication to use the systemsetup command, which can
alter the time from the command line. This may be an overall bug in
sudo. Why can I bypass security by changing the time?!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1062186] Re: 'Backup Failed' message when external backup drive first inserted

2013-04-26 Thread Matthias Niess
I added deja-dup to the bug-report so that this appears in *their*
bugtracker and not the ubuntu-packages. I'm sure this is a race
condition.

I get the error when I plug in my slow external HDD. Leaving it plugged
in I trigger the backups again by pluggin in another USB device. As the
backup-drive is already mounted there is no race-condition and the
backup works.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1080082] Re: Lightdm killed during boot (kills itself?)

Title:
Lightdm killed during boot (kills itself?)

Status in Light Display Manager:
  New
Status in “fglrx-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm running 12.10, and since installing the stable release in October
I didn't install any upgrades. This week, after installing the latest
upgrades, lightdm stopped working: the Xserver starts, and dies
immediately, leaving me on a tty7 with remains of log messages.

If I log in and manually restart lightdm, it works.

I think I am not alone in this, as a user had reported exactly the same back
in July in the xubuntu-users mailing list:
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-users/2012-July/004252.html

  I've done some tests and:
  - If I disable plymouth (by removing splash from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
in /etc/default/grub) the bug goes away
  - If I press 'esc' to exit plymouth before lightdm triess to start the bug
also goes away

Looking at the lightdm log, it seems that it decides to kill itself:
  ...
[+1.22s] DEBUG: Starting Light Display Manager 1.4.0, UID=0 PID=1138 (notice
the pid)
  ...
[+5.59s] DEBUG: New display ready, switching to it

'knuckles'
[+6.54s] DEBUG: Got signal 15 from process 1138 (signal to die received from
itself!!)
[+6.54s] DEBUG: Caught Terminated signal, shutting down
  ...

This is what leads me to believe that the bug is in lightdm.

asks the user to unlock his/her keyring in order to save the Ubuntu
One token _if_ the user has changed his/her password after initial
  installation/login of Ubuntu 9.04.

The actual problem seems to be that the default password for the
keyring is initially and automatically set to the same password the
user uses to log in into Ubuntu (GDM). The user does not know anything
about the keyring, because it works automatically (and that's fine).
However if the user ever changes his/her password for Ubuntu (Linux
username) the password protecting the keyring is not changed. So later
if the user needs to unlock the keyring, he/she needs to rembember
what was his/her password when he/she started using Ubuntu in the
  beginning.

The solution would be to set some kind of flag in the Gnome keyring
(Sea Horse?) that the password has been taken automatically from the
username/login. So if ever the user does change his username/login
password, the Gnome keyring would know to automatically also change
the password that protects the keyring.

This bug does not effect new users of Ubuntu, but most likely
everybody who has been using Ubuntu for a longer time (and thus has
changed their login password at some time, which brakes the keyring
  automatics).

I don't have a machine with precise available at the moment. Anyone with
precise can confirm the issue by using the testcase. Just change the
password using the GUI tools and you won't have access to the Gnome
keyring.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1077621] Re: Privacy settings in gnome-control-center should be password protected

2012-11-11 Thread Matthias Niess
I concur. Shouldn't be too hard to protect with policykit, right? The
same actually goes for the backup-settings, I'd say.

Title:
Privacy settings in gnome-control-center should be password protected

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Currently, the privacy settings are not secured properly and allows
driveby users to get a glimpse of the user's privacy settings.

To make my point, if someone manages to view the list of folders that
a user doesn't want Zeitgeist to log, he would be able to find the
exact folders that the user does not want others to get an easy
  access.

Hence, I suggest the privacy settings are locked by default similar to
how the User Accounts work and the settings are only accessible if the
user inputs the password. This would provide added security to the
  user's privacy settings.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 844119] Re: Hitting Alt-Tab does not display Libre Office in list of switchable open applications

2012-09-24 Thread Matthias Niess
I confirm this is still present in Ubuntu 12.04. It happens to me no
matter if I have lo-menubar installed or not. I can't alt-tab to
libreoffice documents. This happens on all my installations of Ubuntu.
The Icon correctly shows up in the launcher and in the ALT TAB view. The
application just won't focus.

As far as I can see this only happens when LO is opened by double-
clicking a file (which is probably the way people usually open it). I
also don't have the default shortcuts so LO in the launcher.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 842566
   Libreoffice and unity integration broken.

Hitting Alt-Tab to bring up a list of switchable open applications
does not display the running Libre Office instance. In order to switch
to Libre Office and bring it to the foreground I must move other
windows around with the mouse and click the Libre Office window.

  To reproduce:
   * Open Libre Office Writer
   * Open a few other applications such a Firefox and Thunderbird
   * Hit Alt-Tab and switch to Firefox
   * Hit Alt-Tab again while keeping Alt depressed

  Expected behavior:
   * Libre Office should be in the list of available switchable applications

  Actual behavior:
   * Libre Office is not in the list of available switchable applications when
hitting Alt-Tab and keeping Alt depressed
   * Libre Office is not switched back to when tapping Alt-Tab quickly (the
last-used application before Libre Office is jumped to)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1041054] Re: Alt+Print only works when both keys are pressed at exactly the same time

2012-09-03 Thread Matthias Niess
This looks like a regression. It worked for me before the last update.
Now I have the same issue. Also: this bug existed in the past (HUD
blocking all keycombos that use ALT) and was already fixed, as far as I
remember.

When I choose Safely remove drive context menu entry for an external
