[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768993] [NEW] Upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04 does not start gdm3 on boot

2018-05-03 Thread Mike Robinson
Public bug reported:

Note, I have kde and gnome installed. Previously I was using lightdm,
but since this was removed with the upgrade, I chose to use gdm. When
booting, gdm did not start but instead I was at a shell login prompt. No
errors were present in syslog or dmesg. dmesg output is attached.

I could start the x server by executing `startx` from the CLI. I then
issued a `dpkg-reconfigure sddm` and selected sddm, then `dpkg-
reconfigure gdm` and selected gdm. It gave me some sort of error about
invoke-rc.d, so I then did `invoke-rc.d gdm3 start`, and it started gdm
fine without rebooting. Then on next reboot as well, gdm started. So I'm
not sure what there actually caused it to work.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1296133] Re: Suspend and hibernate missing from KMenu and Power Management in System settings

2014-07-01 Thread Mike Robinson
This does not apply to my case: the Power Management service is
enabled but suspend and hibernate do not show up.

Try disabling it and re-enabling it.

Title:
Suspend and hibernate missing from KMenu and Power Management in
  System settings

Status in “upower” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have used install scripts to install Kubuntu 14.04 on three
completely different systems. Although the packages installed are
basically the same, one of the system has no Suspend/hibernate options
in the KMenu nor in the Power management in the KDE System settings.
Since this is a laptop, this also means that the battery life is
greatly reduced, because it cannot go to standby when lid is closed or
when it's idle. Interestingly, If I logout, there is a Standby button
on the lighdm login screen. If I click it, the laptop goes to standby
  and wakes up without problems.

2014-06-19 Thread Mike Robinson
I'm not sure if anyone else had this problem, but I had disabled the
Power Management service. As soon as I enabled it again, suspend and
hibernate showed up. You can find this in:

System settings Startup and Shutdown Service Manager
