[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046632] Re: Submenus appear and disappear rapidly and can't be used
Oh, actually I think this was a side effect of a different problem: I had a USB ethernet dongle attached which, for some reason, was connecting and disconnecting rapidly. So probably the applet tried to refresh every time this happened. I guess ideally it would still be usable even in this situation, but probably this is not really an issue. I'll investigate the ethernet dongle issue separately. ** Attachment removed: "nmcli-con.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/2046632/+attachment/5729795/+files/nmcli-con.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager-applet in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2046632 Title: Submenus appear and disappear rapidly and can't be used Status in network-manager-applet package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I'm using nm-applet under the awesome window manager. Most of those actions are exposed globally, and either have a keyboard shortcut bound to them by default, or you can bind one yourself. And you can also assign arbitrary shell scripts to global keyboard shortcuts. Then you can bind a mouse button to the keyboard shortcut used to trigger any of those actions. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 299158] Re: DejaVu, Liberation Mono, Noto Mono, Tlwg Mono, Oxygen Mono, Bitstream Vera Mono: Combining diacritics out of place
This is a problem even at the desktop level. With the gnome desktop font set to the default 'Ubuntu 11' if I use an app (gImageReader in my case, see also https://github.com/manisandro/gImageReader/issues/613) to write certain decomposed characters (e.g. \u0069\u0300), they are not properly combined on the screen. This is a bad user experience. I've switched to 'DejaVu Sans 11' as a workaround, as it seems to handle everything correctly so far. However, the related DejaVu Sans Mono Book still messes this up (e.g. in gnome-terminal and gedit), but on different combined characters. So for monospace needs I've found FreeMono to cover the most ground (pkg: fonts-freefont-ttf). Try this, while switching between the default gnome-terminal font (Ubuntu Mono?) and DejaVu Sans Mono Book: $ echo -e '\u0069\u0300\u0020\u0254\u0327' ì ɔ̧ The ì renders correctly while the open o + cedilla doesn't, both here and with the terminal font set to DejaVu Sans Mono Book, but if you switch to the default font in the terminal the open o + cedilla renders correctly while the ì renders with both the dot and the grave accent on top of each other, rather than the dot disappearing like it should. I would guess that the related font definitions (Ubuntu Regular/Mono, DejaVu Sans Mono, possibly others) are simply incomplete when it comes to these less common character combinations. font-manager has been very helpful for side-by-side comparisons of sample text in multiple fonts. ** Bug watch added: github.com/manisandro/gImageReader/issues #613 https://github.com/manisandro/gImageReader/issues/613 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to fonts-liberation in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299158 Title: DejaVu, Liberation Mono, Noto Mono, Tlwg Mono, Oxygen Mono, Bitstream Vera Mono: Combining diacritics out of place Status in fonts-dejavu package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in fonts-droid package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Status in fonts-hack package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in fonts-liberation package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in fonts-noto package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in fonts-tlwg package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in fonts-ubuntu package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in msttcorefonts package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Status in oxygen-fonts package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in ttf-bitstream-vera package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: In the Liberation Mono font, combining diacritical marks are drawn over the following character rather than the preceding. When I try to play a wav with aplay (e.g. aplay /usr/share/sounds/speech-dispatcher/test.wav) the level indicators in pavucontrol fluctuate, but no sound results. Adjusting the volume does not help. Also, when the headphones are plugged in, I cannot play sound through the internal speakers by selecting the "Speakers" port in pavucontrol Output Devices. With the headphones unplugged, the internal speakers work fine. I tested the Ubuntu 19.10 live USB and I am able to play sound through the headphones without doing anything special (plug in headphones, select "Headphones" from the popup that appears, and use aplay as above), so the hardware itself is apparently okay. The headphones do not work when booting the Ubuntu 20.04 live USB. The problem may be intermittent as I seem to recall I have been able to use the headphones since upgrading to 20.04, but I am not sure of my recollection. I also think that in some of my tests, I was able to play sound through the speakers with the headphones plugged in (by selecting Speakers in pavucontrol) but I cannot reproduce this now. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1889010] Re: [Inspiron 5482, Realtek ALC3204, Black Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem
This seemed like it might have been related to bug 1873384. However I have pulseaudio 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.5 in which that bug is supposedly fixed, and changing input sources does not fix the problem for me. On the other hand the speakers are now working with the headphones plugged in, when "Speakers" is selected in pavucontrol. I don't know what changed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889010 Title: [Inspiron 5482, Realtek ALC3204, Black Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I'm unable to play sound through the headphone jack on this laptop. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738774]
In general I think people with high DPI screens would prefer to use SVG icons and live with or report a small number of bugs with a small number of mid-rendered icons then live with 100% of all icons being pixelated and ugly. Perhaps making the SVG renderer default only for high DPi users of SVG-compatible icon themes would make everyone happy: high DPI users get nicer icons overall, while devs get more user eyeballs (and bug reports, and potential contributors) using the SVG renderer. FWIW all the icons look flawless to me with the Breeze SVG icon theme and a global 250% scale scale factor -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1738774 Title: Pixeled icons with LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 on HiDPI/4K display Status in LibreOffice: Confirmed Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 shipped with Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS shows pixeled icons on a HiDPI/4K monitor like used in the Dell XPS 13 9360. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1845362] Re: gnome-font-viewer crashed with signal 5 in _XEventsQueued()
I am brand new to linux. Just purchased a System76 laptop that shipped to me with PopOS 20.04 installed. In checking out the new system, I can confirm this bug exists there too (makes sense, given the ubuntu base). Launching the Fonts app from their launcher bring the app up, but that's as far as it goes. It becomes immediately unresponsive and the window cannot be closed. I am only able to exit by ending the process. Repeated a couple times with the same results. I googled the issue and found this thread. Going from the posts above, I launched the 'gnome-font-viewer' from the command line. In doing so, the app launched, and appears to be fully functional. Subsequent launches both from the command line, and the gui launcher now, are also functional. The first launch from the command line did generate the error message below however. Since I've never used linux, I don't know what it means, but maybe it'll help. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1873483] [NEW] Screensaver locks when advancing to YouTube's next autoplay video
Public bug reported: So I'm watching YouTube videos, and I have autoplay enabled, so when it gets to the end of one, it lingers for a moment then jumps right into another. While watching a video, the screensaver is inhibited, as it should be. Because most of these videos are considerably longer than my lock period. But during that jump, there's an instant where there isn't technically a video playing, and since I haven't touched the keyboard in a while, BAM, the screensaver springs into action. And I'm sitting here during the intro of the next video, listening to the theme and narrator, and going "Well that's interesting, is he leading with a black screen for some narrative reason?" until I bump the mouse and there's my lockscreen... [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1697122] Re: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment to enable pixel scrolling with touchpad and touch gestures
it's annoying for me too. The problem is that setting the envar just substitutes some problems with different ones: - Without this envar set, there is no touchscreen scrolling, and touchpad scrolling goes three lines at a time rather than pixel-by-pixel - With this envar set and a notification appears, touchpad scrolling is interrupted and mouse wheel scrolling stops working entirely until Firefox is de-focused and re-focused The correct solution is to fix these bugs, not toggle between two broken states. Chromium has different scrolling bugs, BTW. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697122 Title: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment to enable pixel scrolling with touchpad and touch gestures Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 17.04 Firefox version: 53.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.17.04.2 In Firefox, two-finger scroll gestures on a touchpad are interpreted as scroll wheel rotations, and the content scrolls three lines at a time. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1697122] Re: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment to enable pixel scrolling with touchpad and touch gestures
BTW I've since changed my mind on this. Setting the proposed environment variable makes toupad scrolling mysteriously slow down after a notification arrives until you switch focus away from Firefox and back (See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1182700). This problem is particularly severe for mouse scroll wheel users, where wheel scrolling breaks entirely until you switch away and back again. I grudgingly live with the issue when I'm using a touchpad, but I unset the envar when I'm using a mouse because of how bad it is. I think https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1182700 needs to be fixed upstream before this can be considered. Unfortunately, it's blocked on a GTK issue (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/558) that the GTK developers have declared unfixable on X11. ** Bug watch added: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues #558 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/558 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697122 Title: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment to enable pixel scrolling with touchpad and touch gestures Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 17.04 Firefox version: 53.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.17.04.2 In Firefox, two-finger scroll gestures on a touchpad are interpreted as scroll wheel rotations, and the content scrolls three lines at a time. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1773959] Re: High CPU usage by gnome-shell when only running gnome-terminal
I've noticed the same issue with all extensions disabled. It seems very correlated with changes on the screen, to include moving the mouse. I've watched 'top' over an SSH connection to the system running gnome. If I have just a terminal window open any updates in that window cause gnome- shell CPU to jump to 7-9% CPU for a couple seconds (according to top which is updating every second on a remote shell). The updates and activities I've tested so far that seem to show this behavior are: - moving the mouse around on the screen - typing any amount of text in the open terminal window - having top running in the open terminal window. I'm guessing there is something in gnome-shell copying the screen to a buffer, and, after some period of inactivity it decreases its rate of copying... perhaps? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1773959 Title: High CPU usage by gnome-shell when only running gnome-terminal Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Even when doing nothing but displaying a terminal screen with top running gnome-shell uses 10% of a CPU. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1784161] Re: Mouse inoperative in other apps while Shotwell is uploading to Flickr
Adding some detail here: Switching back to xorg reproduces the bug 100%. I can click on the launcher, it seems to be the only thing that'll receive my clicks while the bug is active, but new apps launched while the bug is active are also unable to see mouse clicks. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1697122] [NEW] Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment
Public bug reported: Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 17.04 Firefox version: 53.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.17.04.2 In Firefox, two-finger scroll gestures on a touchpad are interpreted as scroll wheel rotations, and the content scrolls three lines at a time. This is inappropriate behavior for touchpad scrolling; it should scroll pixel-by-pixel. Firefox already has the ability to do this, you just need to turn it on by running the program with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in the environment: for example, by running `MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 firefox`, or adding it to /etc/environment or something like that. Turning on this behavior yields a large usability improvement for laptop users. Therefore, I am proposing that MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 be permanently added to the packaging such that it's always present when Firefox runs. This is what Fedora does, and it results in a much improved experience for the laptop user. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697122 Title: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 17.04 Firefox version: 53.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.17.04.2 In Firefox, two-finger scroll gestures on a touchpad are interpreted as scroll wheel rotations, and the content scrolls three lines at a time. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1318360] Re: Poor microphone quality (mako)
I don't know if this will help anyone else arrive at a solution, but I observed alsamixer while switching back and forth between non-speaker phone mode and speaker phone mode in a phone call. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1468426] [NEW] Play Queue greys out songs and plays in random order and gets stuck on song(s) randomly.
Public bug reported: If I put a bunch of songs in the Play Queue, they seem to be randomly greyed out, even before they've been played. You can see that here: http://imgur.com/OLVT4Xf. Only the Beaming and Experimental Track songs have actually been played, with Pixel Party, Coyote, and breach breach breach greyed out prior to being played. Now, I'm guessing that this is Banshee shuffling the queue, but it seems to ignore certain songs and never play them. If this is by design, I think it should be changed to where if shuffling is turned on, it will visually change the order of the songs and only grey out the already played ones. Another seemingly side-affect of this is that if you have a bunch of songs in the queue and listen to an album through the last song in the queue from that album, it will jump to some random spot in the queue, removing greying out a whole bunch of songs in front of it, even when shuffle is turned off via Playback Shuffle Shuffle Off. As for getting stuck on songs, it's hard to re-produce because it seems to happen on a totally random basis. One way that you can get it happen some of the time is to add a bunch of tracks and then let them play for a bit or skip and it might start repeating 1-4 songs. What I'm expecting should happen is that it will just continue to play down the queue, and since Shuffling is turned off, it will play the songs in the order I added them until the queue is empty, deleting them from the queue as they are played. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1275042] Re: Wrong colors with Mesa 9.2 and Mesa 10.0 on Lubuntu 14.04 PowerPC
I have the same issue in Ubuntu MATE Remix 14.04.1 on an iBook G4 (mid-2005, PPC). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1275042 Title: Wrong colors with Mesa 9.2 and Mesa 10.0 on Lubuntu 14.04 PowerPC Status in Mesa: Confirmed Status in mesa package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi all, I've tried Mesa 9.2.2-1 and 10.0.1 on Debian Sid, Lubuntu 13.10, and on Lubuntu 14.04. Unfortunately all have issued false colors in games. They appear to be ABGR instead of RGBA, thus blue becomes green, red becomes alpha etc. Mesa 8.0.5-4 and Mesa 9.1.6 have no color problem. The transitional solution is to install the old Mesa 8.0.X with Force Version with the Synaptic package manager on new distributions. We had a problem with wrong colors in SuperTuxKart 0.8 last year. The Irrlicht guys have released a little hack for Irrlicht on Linux PPC (http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7t=48577). They told me that is a driver bug, and that workaround costs performance and RAM. Unfortunately this workaround isn't suitable for Mesa 9.2 and higher. At this time we have to install Mesa 9.1.X and lower on new Linux distributions like Lubuntu 13.10, Lubuntu 14.04, Debian Sid etc. It would be nice to solve this issue because we don't need the workaround in the future. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1297790] Re: Unknown audio device dialog pops up every time I plug in headphones
This started happening for me when I upgraded from Trusty to Utopic. And yes, it is a bug, not a feature. Previous versions of Ubuntu always did The Right Thing without asking (admittedly, I've never tried to use a mic/headset, maybe that would have failed before). I understand that there are technical subtleties here, but at the very least, the popup window shouldn't appear every time the device is plugged in. If there's no way to remember individual devices, there should be a checkbox or something for assume this answer until I go into the sound settings and say otherwise. If you're worried that people will forget the checkbox and rage on the forums about their microphones not working, maybe add a small bubble on the corner next to the volume icon reminding people they can change, or a menu option in the sound icon dropdown to change settings. Whatever is done shouldn't steal focus from other applications, shouldn't block the view of the center of the screen, and shouldn't require user action under most circumstances. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to unity-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1297790 Title: Unknown audio device dialog pops up every time I plug in headphones Status in “unity-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I've got a combined headphone/headset socket on my Laptop. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1045528] Re: Not able to SHIFT click when renaming a file.
I would, but since 12.10 is using an older version of nautilus, I'm guessing the chance of the fix being applied to 12.10 is pretty slim unless you backport it. Also, I'm hoping that Ubuntu move onto another file manager that doesn't theaten to remove features every release. The gnome team has some warped vision that I don't agree with anymore. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 964705] Re: System policy prevents modification of network settings for all users
I do not see a way around this for normal users. Clicking Cancel on the authenticate dialog puts the user back at square one. The expected behavior is that you pick a network from the NM menu, it prompts for a key (if required), you enter the key and connect. Currently non-admins can't connect to wireless networks. I have dozens of users with this issue, the only way around it was to allow them to add connections system-wide by overriding the polkit defaults, which I assume is a bad idea. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 959451] Re: Credentials from gnome-keyring is not used while printing
This bug has become much worse with Ubuntu 12.04 - to the point where it is not practical to use Ubuntu 12.04 in an enterprise with Samba networked printers. If you create a networked (Samba) printer, and select Prompt User If Authentication Is Required the following happens: - LibreOffice does not prompt for authentication when printing to Samba printers. The only option is to go into the print queue, right click the job, and select Authenticate. - Checking the Save Password box does nothing, if the user prints again the job is held for authentication. - Apps that use the built-in print dialogs will prompt for authentication, and do not display a Save Password option. - 100% of jobs are held for authentication unless the user's credentials are stored in /etc/cups/printers.conf which is not possible if multiple users are using the same computer. Each user should be able to have their own credentials. This is very frustrating since this bug has persisted since the last LTS and nothing has been done about it. Is there *anything* I can do as a non-programmer to help this get fixed? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gtk+3.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959451 Title: Credentials from gnome-keyring is not used while printing Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi, For end-user desktops, we've inserted the printing credentials in the user's gnome-keyring to make printing authentication automated. This worked perfectly last year and still works today ... up to the moment when the /etc/cups/printers.conf is auto-modified with the following change : AuthInfoRequired none to AuthInfoRequired username, password The result is that the user gets a Window which asks the username and the password to print. The printers are installed system wide (authentication can not be done with the printer's URI) and we send printing jobs to a Windows printing server.
