  [Impact]

   * This bug affects Thunar, and likely other file managers relying on
  udisks2.

   * When ejecting a USB disk, the disk ejects normally. However, Thunar
does not detect that it was successfully ejected.

   * The "Writing data to device" notification will be displayed for
  some time.

   * Eventually, Thunar pops up an error dialog saying 'Failed to eject
  "". Timeout was reached.'

   * Thunar will sometimes also exit at this point.

   * It has been determined that the upstream patch included in this
  upload resolves this error.

  [Test Case]

   1. Mount a partition of a USB hard disk or flash drive.

   2. Using the eject button in the Thunar window sidebar, eject the
mounted partition of the USB HDD.

   3. The disk will spin down and eject normally. The "Writing data to
device" notification will be displayed until an error dialog saying
'Failed to eject "". Timeout was reached.'

  [Regression Potential]

   * Regression potential is very minimal. The patch is from upstream
gvfs, contains a single line change, and applies only to the drive
  stopping event.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Mount a partition of a USB harddisk

  2) Using the eject button in the Thunar window sidebar, eject the
mounted partition of the USB HDD.

  3) After the USB HDD is ejected and spins down, unplug it
  .

At (2), the disk ejects normally. But Thunar thinks it hasn't been
ejected and is still trying to eject. The "Writing data to device"
notification continues to display. Eventually, Thunar pops up an error
dialog saying 'Failed to eject "". Timeout was

Same thing happens with some USB flash drives, so the bug can also be

xserver-xorg now has an apport hook. So in order of ubuntu-bug to work,
it is necessary to have python3-apport installed, per LP: #1730035.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1753576] Re: GDM freeze

2018-03-06 Thread Nish Aravamudan
I edited /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and put WaylandEnable=false back in (I
had it enabled before to test). Greeter came right up on reboot and my
external monitor works again.

What is curious is that my session choice in both cases was/is Gnome on
Xorg. So is it possible there's some change in the greeter's behavior?
As to using wayland or not.

Yeah, tricky when the machine physically seems to be hung (no
touchpad, no responsiveness to keyboard)

Thanks for the info!

I just was wondering, as the responsiveness of the desktop feels very
different, and it does seem like I'm now on an Xwayland session, even
though I didn't change anything. I wonder if it's Wayland that's
actually crashing?

But if I plug in my usb-c dongle, it immediately freezes and the fans
start to spin. Unplugging the dongle has no effect. Suggestions for
debugging?

I just rebooted again and without hitting any keys, it did come up to
the greeter without issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1753576] Re: GDM freeze

2018-03-05 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Hrm, I'm not entirely sure what just changed. I rebooted and unlike
before, I hit Escape at the splash screen, and the GDM greeter showed up
just fine (after hitting Escape again to go back to graphics mode). I'll
see if that's reproducible shortly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1753576] Re: GDM freeze

2018-03-05 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Oh also the splash screen correctly displays on both monitors, so i
think it must be in X that the multiple displays fail.

I'll see if I can figure out how to get to a temrinal.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1753576] Re: GDM freeze

2018-03-05 Thread Nish Aravamudan
@vanvugt: no, as it's not crashed (afaict), it's just 100% cpu (based
upon fans). Numlock is still responsive as is sysrq, but i can't get to
any ttys (that is, ctrl+alt+f2, etc don't seem to work).

I even tried booting with 'text' and annoyingly gdm still started (I
might be misremembering how to do that, though).

Any suggestions on how to force a crash?

I might reboot now and just leave it to see if it eventually progresses.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1676977] Re: Login prompt never presented with ldap login and ldapi set with a name.

2017-04-26 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Thank you for the prompt testing. I'm marking a few potential src
packages where the actual issue might lie.

** Also affects: accountsservice (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided

** Also affects: systemd (Ubuntu)

I have a ldap login configuration that has worked with several Ubuntu
  versions.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with 16.10.

If I left my ldapi setting using a name as I used to, the login prompt
never appears. If I change the ldapi setting to the IP of the
authentication server, the login works perfectly.

The authentication server name resolution works fine on 16.10 (after
login) and on previous version even during login.

It seems to me my problem is related to some ordering issue.

I followed the same path and dist-upgraded all the way to yakkety and
saw no errors with the package in proposed. I'm not sure, though, if
that really qualifies as a v-d-y, given that I didn't reproduce the
original issue in that path.

This is a packaging error when upgrading from trusty to xenial. You
may see a file conflict error because a file moved from libsane to
libsane-common. This is fairly common, as you can see from the dupes
  and affect-count.

As described in comment #4, only xenial really needs to be patched.
But since it shares the same version of sane-backends as yakkety and
zesty, it's nice to update both of those so that upgraders get a clean
  path.

  [ Test Case ]

Install libsane and libsane-common on trusty. Upgrade to xenial.

  [ Regression Potential ]

Tiny. This is just a Breaks/Conflict packaging error. No code

I setup a Trusty LXD, installed libsane and libsane-common and then
manually updated source.list with the xenial repositories, including

You seemed to have ignored Paul's message and instead provided context
which should go in a different bug.

This bug was for name resolution failing after suspend/resume. It had
nothing directly to do with VPNs. Please file a new bug.

Hi Paul,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates is the standard reference.

It takes at least 7 days in -proposed before the SRU team will release
it.

Thanks,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1675683] Re: Computer sluggish/irresponsive for several minutes after hibernation

2017-03-27 Thread Nish Aravamudan
This is probably going to be tricky to debug as it's probably hardware
dependent.

Can you first run `sudo dmesg -C`, then suspend and resume and then
attach the output of `dmesg` ?

Computer sluggish/irresponsive for several minutes after hibernation

Status in pm-utils package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,
my computer is very sluggish for a good five minutes after thawing from
hibernation.

Booting the system and the thawing process in itself seems to run fine
: the console displays the progress of reloading contents into RAM at
a satisfying pace, then the lightdm unlock interface displays.

From this point on, things become strange : the computer has an
constant and intense hard drive activity and applications do not
respond to input in a swift manner (moving the mouse cursor works in
"real time" though, and the clock, which displays seconds, also works
  almost normally).

This reminds me of what happens when you set focus back to an
application that had been paged to swap : it is irresponsive until it
is back in RAM. Except this happens for all applications at once.

This stops after several minutes (more than five) and the computer
  becomes usable again.

I experienced the problem today again. The current RAM usage is 7.2
Gio / 15.6 Gio and swap usage is 4.2 Gio / 31.3 Gio.

  Main memory usage is :
  firefox 3.4 Gio
  firefox (other instance) 1.7 Gio
  thunderbird 624 Mio
  xfwm4 213 Mio

Hibernation with TuxOnIce did not induce this problem (I am not using
it currently due to mismanagement of video drivers).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1564778] Re: package libsane-common 1.0.25+git20150528-1ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/etc/sane.d/hp.conf', which is also in package libsane:i386 1.0.

2017-02-10 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Hello and thank you for this update!

If I understand this correctly, the issue is when coming from Trusty, a
file is now owned by two packages.

A user would obviously experience this on Xenial during upgrade when the
new version of libsane-common gets installed.

But then they might also experience it on Y & Z if they choose to
resolve the issue on X by removing libsane-common on X, and release-
upgrade'ing instead, and then trying to install libsane-common again on
the new release and it fails agin. Except that libsane depends on
libsane-common, so I believe it would also be removed in that case. So,
IIUC, this cannot actually happen on Y or Z. You only need to modify
those versions so that they are after X for upgrade purposes from X?

Your fix is to ensure that (old) versions of libsane are removed so the
file conflict doesn't occur, is that correct? (note that all of these
questions will be necessary to satisfy
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates.)

Finally, I believe your X and Y versioning is a bit off. I tend to use
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Update_the_packaging
as my standard, and that would result in:

Z: 1.0.25+git20150528-1ubuntu3
Y: 1.0.25+git20150528-1ubuntu2.16.10.1
X: 1.0.25+git20150528-1ubuntu2.16.04.1

While your version is not incorrect, it assumes that release naming will
proceed forever alphabetically sorted forwards, which we (presumably)
know is not going to happen post-Z, so it's a good habit to break.

I am going to ask the -devel list about this, as I'm not sure what the
right way forward is (it feels weird to add to our delta just to allow
for the fixlet).

Thanks!
-Nish

P.S. In case you're interested, it seems like sane-backends could do
with a fresh merge to Debian unstable (last done in Wily!)

Title:
NetworkManager should provide default name for VLAN

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I tried to use the network manager UI to define a VLAN interface, and
nothing happened. There are a few bugs here:

  (1) When creating a VLAN interface through the UI, the "vlan interface
name" must be filled in. This should just default to ., rather than being a required field. (I typed in "vlan100"
to get the "Save" button to activate.)

  (2) After creating my VLAN interface, nothing happened. No new
interface appeared. I then realized that I had not installed the
"vlan" package, and assumed that NetworkManager therefore could not
  complete configuration of the interface.

  (3) After installing the 'vlan' package (and then telling
NetworkManager to disconnect and reconnect my Ethernet interface from
the UI, just for good measure), still no VLAN interfaces were present
  on my system.

I also tried editing the VLAN interface in the UI, and specifying
"enp4s0f1.100", but still no VLAN interface came online.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1630349] Re: libwebp ftbfs on armhf

2016-10-04 Thread Nish Aravamudan
It would appear, though, that libwebp has neon support, it just needs to
be modified (configure script) to detect it properly, rather than
relying on the header's existence. The code has runtime neon detection,
so it should be safe to compile-in, if hte compiler supports the optoin.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1630349] Re: libwebp ftbfs on armhf

2016-10-04 Thread Nish Aravamudan
I found a reference to a similar issue in openal-soft_1:1.16.0-3 from
earlier this year.

http://gcc.1065356.n8.nabble.com/distro-test-rebuild-using-
GCC-6-td1224722.html#a1226791

It seems the arm headers have changed how configure should detect neon
support, and now the build is falsely detecting neon support, even
though it's not passing the required -mfpu=neon flag. Given that neon
support was not enabled before, I believe the best choice is to disable
it via a configure flag.

'recommends: fonts-noto-cjk' causes oversized Ubuntu Server ISO

Status in ghostscript package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Due to the change in bug# 1621210, ghostscript now recommends fonts-
noto-cjk. This package is a ~76MB in size and put the Ubuntu Server
ISO well over the 700MB limit.

The Ubuntu Server team has considered the following:

  1) Remove the print server task. Currently, in Xenial and Yakkety, the
print server task does not even show up as an option due to bug#
1624519. However, removing this is a rather large tasks to take up
right before a release. We would like to avoid this option if
  possible.

  2) Blacklist fonts-noto-cjk in the server-ship seed [1]. We were told
that blacklisting is for very specific causes and this was not an
  appropriate use case.

  3) Change the recommends of ghostscript on fonts-noto-cjk.

  4) Other?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1280756] Re: libopenexr6_1.6.1-7_i386.deb 403 Forbidden

2016-09-28 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Thank you for filing this bug. Based upon the time of your report, and
that libopenxr6 is at the following levels:

 libopenexr6 | 1.6.1-4.1 | precise | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, powerpc
 libopenexr6 | 1.6.1-7ubuntu1 | trusty | amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, powerpc,
ppc64el

I would suspect a mirror issue (transient?). Marking as Incomplete.

How very strange. I guess there must be a side-effect in the xorg intel
driver that tries to handle those keys, but seems odd that'd be the
case. Or it could be very specific to the hardware. My fn keys and other
input work. What machine are you seeing this on?

> Purging permits it to behave as per expected.

I'm glad I didn't permanently break your system! I assume your tests are
occurring each time after restarting X/your system?

Note that this was just a build of the version of in Yakkety already
at the time. It looks like a new Yakkety upload has occurred and I'm
pushing a rebuild to my PPA (2.99.917+git20160706-1ubuntu1~16.04ppa1),
can you test that one too once it has finisehd buiding?

Hrm, that seems sort of surprising as my package would have done that.
It's purely a drop-in replacement for the intel X video driver. You
rebooted after installation (or restarted X)?

Non-responsive in what sense? Your system hung/crashed?

Can you confirm that ppa-purge'ing my PPA results in your system
working? You're sure it wasn't something else that happened to install
simultaneously?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078068] Re: Video blinking blue during incoming call

2016-07-06 Thread Nish Aravamudan
@andor-udel,

Yep, but with the caveat that it's a PPA version, etc. If you could test
it, that'd be great! But it obviously is not an official solution (more
testing will encourage me or someone else to get it fixed officially :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078068] Re: Video blinking blue during incoming call

2016-07-05 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Ok, so I figured it was best to test the version in Yakkety. I rebuilt
in Xenial locally and tested it, it fixed the problem for me! So that's
exciting.

I've put this in the same PPA as
2:2.99.917+git20160522-1ubuntu1~16.04ppa1. I'm not sure it's appropriate
to SRU the whole version, but given we're running a git snapshot (it
seems) in 16.04 too, maybe it'd be fine. I'm going to update some of the
bug metadata to make it clear where the bug is.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 997927] Re: NM reports "VPN service 'openvpn' disappeared"

2016-03-10 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

There isn't really enough information here to know if there is a bug in
openvpn itself, or in NetworManager. So I am marking this bug Incomplete
for now for openvpn.

If you can provide exact steps so that a developer can reproduce the
original problem using only openvpn, then please add them to this bug
and change the status back to New.

** Changed in: openvpn (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Incomplete
