[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1934185] Re: Ubuntu Dock popup menu won't go away

2021-07-01 Thread Paul Eggert
"Also if you'd like to discuss Thunderbird then please open a separate
new bug."

OK, I filed bug#1934243 for the Thunderbird issue. Thanks for diagnosing
the original bug as a problem with Ubuntu Dock, not GDM.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1934243] [NEW] thunderbird drag-n-drop move messages fails on Wayland

2021-07-01 Thread Paul Eggert
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 21.04 when I use Thunderbird, drag-n-drop sometimes fails to
work when moving messages. I attempt to drag a message (or a collection
of messages) from one folder to another, but the attempt to drag fails
and nothing happens.

This occurs when I use the default (Wayland) login. The problem does not
occur when I use X.org login.

The problem is intermittent; it may take a few moves for the failures to
start occurring.

I reported this issue in bug#1934185 but that bug report is primarily
about Ubuntu Dock and I was asked to file a separate bug report about
Thunderbird.

To file this bug report, I ran "ubuntu-bug" under X.org but the bug
actually occurs only under Wayland.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1901776] [NEW] emacs snap has many errors on startup - how to report snap-related bugs?

2020-10-27 Thread Paul Eggert
Public bug reported:

[This is a reposting of Bug#1898083, which I reported against Emacs. I
don't know what package to report for Emacs snap bugs, so I am initially
guessing that the package should be "snap" in the form. If "snap" is
wrong, please reassign it to the appropriate package, which apparently
is not "emacs".]

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 and my first shell command was 'emacs'.
The response was:

Command 'emacs' not found, but can be installed with:

sudo snap install emacs # version 27.1, or
sudo apt install e3 # version 1:2.71-2
sudo apt install emacs-gtk # version 1:26.3+1-1ubuntu2
sudo apt install emacs-lucid # version 1:26.3+1-1ubuntu2
sudo apt install emacs-nox # version 1:26.3+1-1ubuntu2
sudo apt install jove # version 4.17.2.7-1

See 'snap info emacs' for additional versions.

So I tried the first command 'sudo snap install emacs'. So I tried it:

$ sudo snap install emacs
[sudo] password for eggert:
error: This revision of snap "emacs" was published using classic confinement
and thus may perform arbitrary system changes outside of the security
sandbox that snaps are usually confined to, which may put your system at
   risk.

If you understand and want to proceed repeat the command including
   --classic.

That didn't look promising, but I was stubborn, and continued as
follows:

$ sudo snap install --classic emacs
emacs 27.1 from Alex Murray (alexmurray) installed

Great! Now I can run Emacs. But the experience was not good at all:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1639180] Re: no login possible after update to nvidia 304.132

2017-01-12 Thread Paul Eggert
> @eggert-cs, have you tried the "ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa" PPA?

No, sorry, I just followed the recipe in #20 to downgrade from 304.132
to 304.131, plus the file /etc/apt/preferences.d/local-nvidia-quirks as
described in #18 to make sure 304.132 is not reinstalled as part of an
upgrade. This desktop is being used by others for their daily work, so
I'm conservative about making changes to it. Is there a reliable recipe
for trying out ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa for a little bit and then
reverting to what I have now?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1639180] Re: no login possible after update to nvidia 304.132

2017-01-11 Thread Paul Eggert
I am still observing the problem on my Ubuntu 16.04.1 x86 desktop, which
has C77 [GeForce 8300] (rev a2) graphics. I assume this is because
304.134 has not yet been backported to 16.04.1 LTS. I hope the bug is
fixed soon, as it's a little disconcerting that the latest stable Ubuntu
release does not work on my non-bleeding-edge desktop. (Nouveau crashes
too often to be useful, and the more up-to-date proprietary driver has
so many artifacts on the screen that it is unusable.) For now, I have
worked around the problem by using the recipe in #20 to go back to
304.131-0ubuntu3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1639180] Re: no login possible after update to nvidia 304.132

2016-11-06 Thread Paul Eggert
I also observed the problem on my desktop running Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
x86. lspci | grep VGA reports "02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA
Corporation C77 [GeForce 8300] (rev a2)". I am attaching
/var/log/Xorg.1.log, which says "NVIDIA GPU GeForce 8300 (C77) at
PCI:2:0:0 (GPU-0)". This system worked fine with the previous 304xx
package. I have worked around the problem by dropping 304xx and using
Nouveau.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-05-07 Thread Paul Eggert
This happened to me too, I think just after I started up Rhythmbox on my
16.04 desktop. I don't use Windows shares. It's pretty annoying.

Bug description:
  Example:

I use Virtualbox and mount a .vdi on an SMB server. Using gvfsd-smb
(browsing within Gnome to find the share), gvfsd-smb uses up to 50%
CPU which slows down the entire system when accessing the network
share. Mounting using sudo ($ sudo mount -t smbfs -o
guest, nounix, noperm //server/share /media/share) so that cifs is used
uses around 8% CPU. The difference is dramatic!

If I didn't have sudo access my machine would grind to a halt when
trying to use the remote share.
