[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1542030] Re: Problem during configuring (wrong path)

2016-02-26 Thread Peter Schüller
As a workaround to allow installation, I made a symlink:

# cd /usr/lib
# ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/utempter
# apt-get install libutempter0

-> installation can finish however it might be good to remove the
symlink afterwards (?)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1438740] Re: gnome-panel crashes when starting Unity 3D engine steam game - signal 5 in _XReply()

I need to boot from this live-cd and there install steam and the game to
test it, is that correct?

I have another 14.04 ubuntu where the bug does not happen with the same
game, so it might be hardware-specific.

2015-04-01 Thread Peter Schüller
As I have no memory stick here at the moment I tried some more things:
* the crash is reproducible in gnome-flashback compiz
* the crash is reproducible in gnome-flashback metacity
* the crash is reproducible in unity (when I manually start the gnome-panel)
* if I restart the gnome-panel while the game is running, it immediately
crashes again

Title:
gnome-panel crashes after launching steam game (Thomas was alone)

Status in gnome-panel package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Hello,

I encountered a minor problem on Ubuntu 13.04 with Gnome session in
fallback mode. After running the game (even without launching steam
application), both gnome panels (upper panel and the bottom one)
  disappear.

I had started gnome-panel manually in the terminal and then launched
  the game.

  I received a following message:
  (gnome-panel:3447): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-panel' received an X
Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 32189 error_code 8 request_code 62 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

  Output of apt-cache policy gnome-panel:

  gnome-panel:

Bug description:
This bug is a followup to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
  /gnome-panel/+bug/1201095 with attached crash report.

The game where I observe this is Magicite, however it seems to be the
case for other steam games as well (see other bug report).

I run gnome-flashback session with compiz on Ubuntu 14.04.

When the game starts, the panel crashes and disappears. I have to
restart it manually in a shell (it does not automatically respawn).

To report this bug I also had to use the workaround given here:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1312204] Re: package tex-common 4.04 failed to install/upgrade

2014-06-28 Thread Peter Schüller
I solved the problem for me by doing as root the following:

(Before you do this, make sure you have the two package files or similar
versions of these package files in /var/cache/apt/archives !)

dpkg --ignore-depends=tex-common --purge tex-common
dpkg --ignore-depends=texlive-base --purge texlive-base
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/tex-common_4.04_all.deb
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/texlive-base_2013.20140215-1_all.deb

Just purging and installing tex-common did not work. Texlive-base is
somehow involved in this. It seems tex-common can only be installed if
texlive-base is not yet there.

warning.

many of the following three lines

the map is listed:
  /usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
  /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/web2c/updmap.cfg
  - please run (as root) update-updmap
  /etc/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
  /usr/local/share/web2c/updmap.cfg
  - edit the file and remove the line
any other place (esp under your home directory)
  - only used if you have user only fonts activated, otherwise
this file should not be there
  - edit it by hand

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-05-12 Thread Peter Schüller
I think what is broken is just the program to configure these shortcuts.
Why? Because using workarounds I can configure my X to switch among layouts
when I press ALT+SHIFT. In my setup at least there is no inherent
limitation about the ability of using these special keys for switching.

To give an example of such a workaround in my Gnome Classic Flashback
(Metacity):
* If I right-click on the indicator icon, select Text Entry Settings...
then I will get a dialog window where I can define just shortcuts for
Switch to next source using... and Switch to previous source using...
and in this dialog box I CAN configure ALT+SHIFT. When I close the dialog
afterwards it works just fine, consistently, I can switch.
* In the system settings - keyboard - shortcuts dialog I can even
see ALT+SHIFT there, however if I delete this shortcut there is no way to
get it back in that dialog because it will not detect the key. I can always
set the shortcut using Text Entry Settings.

Perhaps the problem is so trivial just for the case of Gnome Classic
Flashback (Metacity). But in Gnome Classic Flashback (Metacity) in my
opinion the only problem is the GUI in the system settings, and the problem
is that it does not detect the keypress. The dialog even displays this
shortcut correctly if it has been set using another tool, so the shortcut
storage and representation is working, just key press detection for setting
the shortcut is broken.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-05-08 Thread Peter Schüller
William: I installed your packages, logged out and in of Gnome Classic
Flashback (Metacity) on 14.04.

But it does not work. I tried to set ALT+LSHIFT, LCTRL+LSHIFT,
LALT+LCTRL, ALTGR+RCTRL, ALTGR+RSHIFT, RCTRL+RSHIFT, LCTRL+ALTGR,
LCTRL+RCTRL, LCTRL+RSHIFT.

Is there an easy way to switch back from your packages to the non-ppa
packages? I think ALTGR+RCTRL worked before installing your ppa but I
want to verify.

Regression potential: The input switching shortcut might capture other

choosing their switching shortcut anyways. For users this bug affects,
this represents a working solution for a critical bug.

2014-05-01 Thread Peter Schüller
After deinstalling gstreamer plugins and totem-mozilla plugin and
disabling gstreamer setting in firefox the problem disappeared.

I then step-by-step reactivated these packages except for the
totem-mozilla plugin. The bug did not appear again.

I will now install totem-mozilla and see what happens.

Title:
firefox 200% CPU usage while idle/shutdown: mpegaudioparse0 and
  mpegaudioparse1 processes

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Firefox regularly eats up 100% or 200% CPU usage while just gmail and
  google calendar pages are opened.

Shutting down firefox does not really shut it down, only the window
disappears, the processes that eat CPU stay, so restarting firefox
does not work until I manually kill these processes.

While they show up as firefox in $ top, I now managed to activate
the thread view where these processes show up as mpegaudioparse0
  and mpegaudioparse1 processes.

Actually this might not be a bug in firefox but in one of the
extensions, e.g., flashplugin, but I am not sure. Firefox should kill
these harshly when exiting, so that restarting firefox is a possible
solution to CPU-eating buggy plugins and extensions.

  I am using ubuntu 12.4.

In about:config I can see that media.gstreamer.enabled is default (true)

Should I try if this happens again if I set it to false?

Which functionality will I lose if I set it to false?

mpegaudioparse is part of gstreamer, so I would suspect the totem

work on some legacy devices.

other words with Linux 3.2.x and XServer 7.6.

problem.
You could do it using Synaptics our using the CLI

I tried to do an apt-get remove fglrx fglrx-amdcccle but apt-get gaves me
fglrx-updates in replacement , with the same issues. I experimented
fglrx-update some months (a year?) ago with similar problems, but at that time
it was a conscient experimentation.
The 13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 could maybe stay in fglrx-updates, and no fglrx ?

fglrx-update some months (a year?) ago with similar problems, but at that time
it was a conscient experimentation.
The 13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 could maybe stay in fglrx-updates, and no fglrx ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 691770] Re: gnome-settings-daemon I/O problem

2012-02-23 Thread Peter Schüller
i am not sure if this is still an issue, suspend works in most cases
now.

i am sure that i disabled all indexing (system-preferences-search and
indexing - remove all directory paths) to make my machine faster, so
perhaps this contributed to solve the problem?
