[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1224756] Re: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store
Basically we need to change pulseaudio in a way it can ask trusty store for the right permission when starting the recording process. Please ping tvoss to know more about how that can be done at the trust-store level, since there are some examples in the trust-store project. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1224756 Title: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products: Confirmed Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Currently the 'audio' policy group allows access to pulseaudio which allows apps to use the microphone and eavesdrop on the user. Pulseaudio needs to be modified to use trust-store, like location- service does. Integrating with trust-store means that when an app tries use the microphone via pulseaudio, pulseaudio will contact trust-store, the trust-store will prompt the user (Foo wants to use the microphone. Is this ok? Yes|No), optionally cache the result and return the result to pulseaudio. In this manner the user is given a contextual prompt at the time of access by the app. Using caching this decision can be remembered the next time. If caching is used, there should be a method to change the decision in settings. Targeting to T-Series for now, since the trust-store is not in a reusable form yet. Original description: David and the security team (inspired by an observation from Rick) discussed that when recording, pulseaudio should somehow unobtrusively show the user that it is recording. The easiest thing to do would be for pulseaudio to alert indicator-sound which would then turn its icon red (similar to indicator-message turning blue with new messages). Marking 'high' because apps with access to pulseaudio can currently eavedrop on users. If the app is allowed to do networking (the default for apps), then it can ship that information off to a server somewhere. Note 1, the alert to indicator-sound must happen via the out of process pulseaudio server and not the confined app itself to be effective. Note 2, we should consider how to enforce this for foreground apps only. Application lifecycle should probably handle this for 13.10 (apps are suspended if not in foreground or if the screensaver is on), but we don't want an app on the converged device to record in the background when the user isn't paying attention. Example eavesdropping attack: start recording only when the screensaver is on (perhaps inhibiting the screensaver during recording would be enough). When playing without sound effects enabled, the game seems very stable. To get to the bottom of this I created an app that simulates a bit how a game works with sound effects. It's a bit more aggressive than Machines-vs-Machines (still not really far fetched from a real game scenario) and reliably triggers some crashers in less than a minute here. So far I've seen crashes in creating SoundEffects items as well as removing them from the scene. Please find the example here: lp:~mzanetti/+junk/soundcrasher You should be able to run it on any vivid powered device by just opening the .pro file in QtCreator and hit the play button. The logs vary a lot between crashes. Sometimes I get some PulseAudio messages, sometimes it just crashes without any. Probably some raciness. Anyhow, this example app should be give the system a hard time and reveal most of the crashes eventually. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1445134] [NEW] Network manager never scanning for new access points
Public bug reported: While trying to reproduce another bug related with the last seen value from the access points, I noticed that network manager is never really scanning for new access points on my desktop, not even when not connected. $ sudo nmcli g logging level debug domains wifi_scan Then powered an access point, but was never really able to see it. From syslog, noticed that there is never really a scan, which explains why the ap never goes away and why it is not able to find it in the first place. If I force a scan via cmdline it works as expected (and I noticed a scan also happens when changing connections). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1443178] [NEW] Accounts Service always relies on language fallback if never set by the user
Public bug reported: current build number: 169 device name: mako channel: ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed alias: ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed last update: 2015-04-12 20:38:14 version version: 169 version ubuntu: 20150412 version device: 20150210 version custom: 20150412 This causes a bad side effect when changing volume via indicator-sound, as that will cause a sync to accountsservice in order to sync the volume. Once that sync happens, it will request the user properties, and in case the user doesn't have a valid language at /var/lib/AccountsService/users/user, it will always rely on the fallback, which would be fine if calculating the fallback wasn't 't so cpu or i/o intensive (and that happens multiple times). As a test, just flash latest vivid image on mako, don't set any language when the wizard shows up, run top and then change the volume by pressing volume up/down. This is what I see with mako: PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 2609 phablet 20 0 499660 121220 52688 S 7.6 6.5 0:41.69 unity8 5600 phablet 20 03676 1760 1288 R 6.0 0.1 0:00.19 language-option 1312 root 20 0 211532 15572 11344 S 1.9 0.8 0:07.25 unity-system-co 1316 phablet 20 0 36532 3792 2928 S 1.3 0.2 0:01.66 accounts-daemon And the reason why: src/user.c ... static void user_get_property (GObject*object, guint param_id, GValue *value, GParamSpec *pspec) { User *user = USER (object); ... case PROP_LANGUAGE: if (user-language) g_value_set_string (value, user-language); else g_value_set_string (value, user_get_fallback_value (user, Language)); break; case PROP_FORMATS_LOCALE: if (user-formats_locale) g_value_set_string (value, user-formats_locale); else g_value_set_string (value, user_get_fallback_value (user, FormatsLocale)); break; user_set_property never gets called unless the user changes the system language from system-settings or wizard. Once you change the language, it will set a valid language at /var/lib/AccountsService/users/user, causing this behavior to stop. Another bad side effect of this issue is that it takes quite a while for accountsservice to reply back to indicator-sound when the sync happens, possibly causing sync aborts (as indicator-sound only waits 1 second before triggering another sync). Some possible ways to fix this issue: 1) Make wizard to set language even when the selected language is already the default one; 2) Change accountsservice to save the fallback value at the first time it gets that from the system; ** Affects: canonical-devices-system-image Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: accountsservice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: unity8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: unity8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: canonical-devices-system-image Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to accountsservice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1443178 Title: Accounts Service always relies on language fallback if never set by the user Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products: New Status in accountsservice package in Ubuntu: New Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: current build number: 169 device name: mako channel: ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed alias: ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed last update: 2015-04-12 20:38:14 version version: 169 version ubuntu: 20150412 version device: 20150210 version custom: 20150412 This causes a bad side effect when changing volume via indicator- sound, as that will cause a sync to accountsservice in order to sync the volume. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1420395] Re: upower consuming over 17% cpu
After profiling upower, this is actually not an issue in there, as the only thing it is doing is getting the battery change event from the kernel, updating the internal struct and sending another dbus message so the clients could see the changes. The main issue here is that the kernel is sending a big amount of battery events (all valid, and different changes), which results in udev, upower and dbus consuming a bit of your cpu. Verified this bug against both krillin and arale and that is not the case there, as I already did the profiling and reduced the amount of battery events. As this bug is just specific to mako, and would require a kernel change to reduce the amount of events, we can lower the priority and fix in vivid only. ** Summary changed: - upower consuming over 17% cpu + [mako] upower consuming over 17% cpu when in idle ** Description changed: From the meta battery bug # 1372413 mako running 191 As device was not suspending and battery level running down, upower is reported at 17%+ cpu by the cpustat tool - mpdecision and systemd-udevd also change their behavior. + mpdecision and systemd-udevd also change their behavior. + + The upower cpu consumption is just a side effect of the amount of + battery related events the kernel send, and specific to mako. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to upower in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1420395 Title: [mako] upower consuming over 17% cpu when in idle Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products: Confirmed Status in upower package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: From the meta battery bug # 1372413 mako running 191 As device was not suspending and battery level running down, upower is reported at 17%+ cpu by the cpustat tool mpdecision and systemd-udevd also change their behavior. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1398560] Re: Music playback randomly stops working
I was finally able to reproduce the issue I saw before with media-hub, following the steps described by comment 14. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1398560] Re: Music playback randomly stops working
Trying to reproduce but I'm still unable to get the issue described at comment #14. I was able to get the system to hang for a bit, but that was because mediascanner crashed. It seems that at one point media-hub wasn't able to accept new connections (couldn't play music via music- app). The problem is that it worked fine after a reboot, so not really pulse specific. I also tested the pulseconfig described by comment #16, but audio is also working as expected (if the file was corrupted or with the multimedia role muted, it would show up when using such configs). Will keep trying to reproduce the issue (this is latest RTM/krillin). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1398560 Title: Music playback randomly stops working Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products: In Progress Status in Media Hub: Invalid Status in QT Ubuntu Camera: New Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: In Progress Bug description: While listening to music media-hub stops randomly. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1398560] Re: Music playback randomly stops working
Opened bug 1438491 for the issue I had with media-hub. For this bug I'll just force pulse to not store/restore any mute or device related value for the multimedia role. I think the original issue is that the multimedia role stream got muted, causing the blocking issue just for multimedia related apps (ringtone and alarms were playing fine). It seems the issue only happens when at least 2 threads are waiting for the wait condition (that gets triggered by pa_threaded_mainloop_signal). When I'm unable to make it to crash, it always shows only one thread waiting the signal. So my current theory is that there might be issues when calling pthread_cond_wait on more than one thread at the same time (maybe when increasing/decreasing the mutex count). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1436162 Title: [pulsesink] abort at pthread_mutex_unlock(m-mutex) == 0' failed at pulsecore/mutex-posix.c:118, function pa_mutex_unlock() with libc 2.21 Status in glibc package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in gst-plugins-good1.0 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: current build number: 146 device name: m75 channel: ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed last update: 2015-03-24 13:57:03 version version: 146 After libc 2.21 landed, pulsesink fails constantly when pausing or seeking the active pipeline. The mutex in question is the one used by pulse's mainloop, which gets used by pa_threaded_mainloop_lock, pa_threaded_mainloop_unlock and pa_threaded_mainloop_wait. As the pulseaudio calls are all asynchronous, gst (pulsesink element) calls pa_threaded_mainloop_wait right after calling pulseaudio, so it can block the thread until pulseaudio returns via callback (which then calls pa_threaded_mainloop_signal, unblocking the thread). The mutex is also recursive, allowing many lock and unlock calls to happen in parallel. Follows the log when I'm able to reproduce the crash (with the mutex recursive count): Interrupt: Stopping pipeline ... Execution ended after 0:00:06.840520615 Setting pipeline to PAUSED ... [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1224756] Re: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store
** Changed in: canonical-devices-system-image Assignee: Michael Frey (mfrey) = Canonical Phone Foundations (canonical-phonedations-team) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1224756 Title: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products: Confirmed Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Currently the 'audio' policy group allows access to pulseaudio which allows apps to use the microphone and eavesdrop on the user. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1425172] Re: Network indicator lists the non-exist AP
From previous conversations: Pat McGowan (pat-mcgowan) wrote on 2015-02-12: Yes, I currently have some 50 APs in the list both on command line and the indicator Its as if the phone was picking them up while I was driving Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre (mathieu-tl) wrote on 2015-02-13: Scanlist updates aren't instantaneous, it depends on whether another scan has happened, and whether the network is still in range; and given moving fast through APs as I recall they will also have to timeout from the list. How long in between tests from the command-line? What is the distance between the two locations? Marcus Tomlinson (marcustomlinson) wrote on 2015-02-16: I tested this by turning on and off a WiFi hotspot a few times and observing both the output of nmcli d wifi list (executed every ±30s), and the list displayed in the Network Indicator. Over 4 test cycles I observed the following: When turning on the hotspot it takes about 1min (maybe 2min) for both nm and the indicator to display the new AP. When turning off the hotspot, nm and the indicator took anywhere between 5-10min to recognise that the AP had dissappeared. AFAICT signal strength updates for APs on the list (other than the currently connected AP) also lag by this 5-10min delay. Seeing that the indicator is always in sync with Network Manager, these delays are clearly not caused by the Network Indicator, but by Network Manager itself (as Mathieu mentioned). So yes, Network Manager does recognise when an AP is no longer in range or drops in signal strength, but personally I find the delay far too long (which I think is the concern expressed here). John McAleely (john.mcaleely) wrote 50 seconds ago: Anecdotally, going on a bus journey in london (or a train journey) will produce a long list of garbage AP's that are not interesting when you finally sit down near a hotspot you want to join. It's not an issue on 'other' OS. Seen on RTM based hansets too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1425172 Title: Network indicator lists the non-exist AP Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products: New Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu RTM: Confirmed Bug description: Summary: Network indicator lists the non-exist AP Steps to reproduce: 1. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1373404] Re: No warning of high volume level
One easy way in the indicator to know if the active port a headphone/headset: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8556022/ I think we should do the following: 1 - Check if the active port is headset; 2 - If headset, see if the volume for the multimedia role is higher than 75%. If higher, change it to 75% (this is basically what is done on Android). This check can be done once at every reboot (or every time someone plugs a headphone/headset). 3 - When changing volume for the multimedia role, warn the user if higher than 75%. You can also do the same for the other roles, but generally we are only concerned with multimedia. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1373404 Title: No warning of high volume level Status in Sound Menu: In Progress Status in Ubuntu UX bugs: Fix Committed Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “ubuntu-system-settings” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “unity-notifications” package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in “unity-notifications” package in Ubuntu RTM: In Progress Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu RTM: In Progress Bug description: The EU has a legal requirement for personal music players to prevent hearing damage. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32009D0490rid=1 Desired resolution: - For RTM the design spec'ed in the following section of the Sound wiki page should be implemented https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#Warnings_.28note:_This_section_should_be_implemented_for_RTM.29 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-sound/+bug/1373404/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

NOTES: The same problem is observed for the opposite situation where a Bluetooth speaker is connected to the device when it is already playing music through the krillin loud speaker. The Bluetooth speaker will only be used once the music app is restarted. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1224756] Re: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store
** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Ricardo Salveti (rsalveti) ** Tags added: touch-2014-10-9 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1224756 Title: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Currently the 'audio' policy group allows access to pulseaudio which allows apps to use the microphone and eavesdrop on the user. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1370091] Re: With music playing, pressing the dialpad keys reduces the volume for an odd interval
We could later on have a separated role for dtmf, that would not be affected by corking and not by ducking, but that is currently not possible as it'd break the silent mode use case. Once we're able to group roles, and separate behaviour with volume, we can get this fixed, but post RTM. ** Also affects: tone-generator (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1370091 Title: With music playing, pressing the dialpad keys reduces the volume for an odd interval Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “tone-generator” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: 1. play a track 2. open dialer-app and press the keypad What happens: The sound music turns down for a few seconds and then gets back to normal automatically. So from IRC it's more about the lack of a fading effect when ducking the sound. There's also an issue that the dtmf tone takes a while to disappear after playing the sound, and for that I added a bugtask for tone generator. ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Changed in: tone-generator (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: tone-generator (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: tone-generator (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Ricardo Salveti (rsalveti) ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Ricardo Salveti (rsalveti) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1370091 Title: With music playing, pressing the dialpad keys reduces the volume for an odd interval Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “tone-generator” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: 1. play a track 2. open dialer-app and press the keypad What happens: The sound music turns down for a few seconds and then gets back to normal automatically. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1370091] Re: With music playing, pressing the dialpad keys reduces the volume for an odd interval
The question here is more to what is the desired behaviour when playing DTMF tones. It needs to be an alert, as on silent mode you don't want it to play, but any alert at this moment will trigger the ducking effect described by the bug. Do we want it to duck or to cork? Cork would be even more confusing imho. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1370091 Title: With music playing, pressing the dialpad keys reduces the volume for an odd interval Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “tone-generator” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: 1. play a track 2. open dialer-app and press the keypad What happens: The sound music turns down for a few seconds and then gets back to normal automatically. With UT, my voice gets distorted to an extent that person at the other end have real difficulties to hear what I am saying, while with Android call quality is much better with no distortion. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1364725] [NEW] Krillin fails to display spinner/unity8 after upgrade to 1.11.7-0ubuntu1
Public bug reported: I noticed that after mako's version 213 of ubuntu touch (http://people.canonical.com/~ogra/touch-image-stats/213.changes), the display started failing quite frequently when using it with krillin (rtm is fine though). Tracking down the changes, it seems that the lightdm update from 1.11.6-0ubuntu1 to 1.11.7-0ubuntu1 is the one causing the issue, as I can get my display to work perfectly fine with latest image + lightdm 1.11.6-0ubuntu1 The symptom is a bit weird though, as the display itself is on (with proper brightness and so on), but nothing showing up on the screen (like not being rendered for some reason). Display power off/on doesn't help, and it seems Unity8 is running fine in the background. When I get this issue, I'm also not able to see the ubuntu touch spinner before Unity8 is up. One way to get a working display again is by restarting ligthdm by hand. ** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1364725 Title: Krillin fails to display spinner/unity8 after upgrade to 1.11.7-0ubuntu1 Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I noticed that after mako's version 213 of ubuntu touch (http://people.canonical.com/~ogra/touch-image-stats/213.changes), the display started failing quite frequently when using it with krillin (rtm is fine though). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1318360] Re: Poor microphone quality (mako)
Can you try the latest image and see if you can still reproduce the issue? We're not yet applying filters, but the volume was adjusted, so I wonder if that would also affect this issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1318360 Title: Poor microphone quality (mako) Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After months of complaints from people talking to me on the phone (mako ubuntu touch), I finally got around to use multiROM to dual boot Ubuntu Touch and Android. Several people can confirm that there is a noticable difference in terms of sound/microphone quality between Android and UT in phone calls. With UT, my voice gets distorted to an extent that person at the other end have real difficulties to hear what I am saying, while with Android call quality is much better with no distortion. I have had a suspicion for a long time that this might be a software and not a hardware issue. After trying Android and Ubuntu on the same hardware I believe this suspicion is proved correct. This issue has persisted in all the builds I have tried since at least the beginning of the year, but probably longer. I am now at r17 of Utopic.
