[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1790608] Re: [snap] Libreoffice/Firefox do not open files from thunderbird (more general: from /tmp)

2022-11-09 Thread Ronald Huetter
Same, if you click a link in evolution mail that should open in firefox.
It breaks such an important use case that I don't understand, how snap
moved forward to standard. Can't explain this to friends, whom I have
recommended changing to Ubuntu.

Bug description:
I received a document via e-mail in Thunderbird. I have the
Libreoffice snap package installed. When I want to open the document
from Thunderbird, I see the Libreoffice splash screen, and then a
dialog stating "/tmp/mozilla_0/.docx does not exist."

The same dialog appears when I navigate to the folder in Files and
  want to open it.

When I copy the file to my desktop, however, I can open it without
  problems.

I guess the source of the issue is confinement, that the Libreoffice
snap can only access files from $HOME. But this breaks the case where
thunderbird creates a temporary copy in /tmp.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1913570] Re: Firefox not opening file chooser dialog for importing certificates

2021-02-19 Thread Ronald Huetter
I tried:
sudo apt-get install -y xdg-desktop-portal

It didn't cure the problem, right after install. Re-installed firefox
didn't make it work either. After reboot everything was working.

Question is, where did I loose this xdg-desktop-portal, but I'm quite
sure it wasn't there from the initial install, because I see the same
behaviour on some other test system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1913963] Re: [Cherry Trail] [modeset] Cursor flickering on dual screen setup

2021-02-02 Thread Ronald Huetter
In Ubuntu-Budgie the above trick doesn't solve the problem. I notice
that Ubuntu Desktop is using gdm3 whereas Ubuntu Budgie is using
lightdm. They are calling xorg with different arguments. So I
reconfigured Budgie for gdm3 and, after creating the monitor.xml file,
the flicker is gone.

I hope, this helps to fix the problem in Budgie. Let me know, if I can
do something else.

Respective xorg command lines:

Ubuntu-Budgie:
/usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0
-nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch

Ubuntu Desktop:
/usr/lib/xorg/Xorg vt2 -displayfd 3 -auth /run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority
-nolisten tcp -background none -noreset -keeptty -novtswitch -verbose 3

Ubuntu-Budgie with gdm3:
/usr/lib/xorg/Xorg vt2 -displayfd 3 -auth /run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority
-nolisten tcp -background none -noreset -keeptty -novtswitch -verbose 3

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1913963] Re: [Cherry Trail] [modeset] Cursor flickering on dual screen setup

2021-02-02 Thread Ronald Huetter
Have to add to the above: after first login, I rearranged the screens
using the Display Settings. That creates a file ~/.config/monitors.xml.
That file does some magic in preventing the flickering. However, it
becomes effective only after logging out and logging in again, so I was
mislead when testing the flickering above. Anyways: deleting the file,
logging out, logging in (Xorg) and the flickering is back. Rearranging
screens, logging out/in: flickering is gone.

With this, I'll try on Ubuntu-Budgie again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1913963] Re: [Cherry Trail] [modeset] Cursor flickering on dual screen setup

2021-02-02 Thread Ronald Huetter
Hi,
first to say: I've been testing Ubuntu-Budgie. There is no option to run on
Wayland. So I downloaded (2021-02-02) and installed Ubuntu 21.04 Desktop to
perform the test and found some surprising results:
1. fresh installation, running on Xorg: the flickering is clearly visible. In
fact, the cursor flickers, if anywhere on the screen some redrawing happens.
To reproduce: open Term. A slight flickering is visible whenever the console
cursor is disappearing and reappearing. This is also the case outside the Term
window. Increase the effect by launching Firefox and browse to cnn.com. While
opening the page, a lot of redrawing is happening (the little bullet in the
tab, some line in the bottom about loading, and the many items on the page.
During the pay load, cursor is flickering anywhere on the screen.
2. logout and login, this time on Wayland: No such effect.
3. logout and login, again on Xorg, again no such effect!

Btw.: I cancelled to install updates to keep a stable environment, so
just the version as indicated above.

If you have any idea, how logging in on Wayland cured this effect
(reinstalled two times to be sure), I might be able to check on Ubuntu-
Budgie (where I can't simply select Wayland).

switched to only single screen, cursor is completely stable.

  When issuing
  xrandr --output HDMI-2 --scale 0.99x0.99
again cursor is stable. Switching to 200% scaling in the desktop settings,
doesn't help.

I tried to catch the effect in a movie. However, because of frame
rate, it is not possible to show the effect. If if its helpful, let me
  know and I'll try harder.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1913963] [NEW] Cursor flickering on dual screen setup

2021-01-31 Thread Ronald Huetter
Public bug reported:

When running on dual screen config, the cursor is heavily flickering.
Makes it a very unpleasant experience, if not renders it unusable. If
switched to only single screen, cursor is completely stable.

When issuing
xrandr --output HDMI-2 --scale 0.99x0.99
again cursor is stable. Switching to 200% scaling in the desktop settings,
doesn't help.

I tried to catch the effect in a movie. However, because of frame rate,
it is not possible to show the effect. If if its helpful, let me know
and I'll try harder.
