[Desktop-packages] [Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2014-07-23 Thread Sam_Ashley
If it's of interest:

At the moment there are 4 of those .goutputstream-?? files in my
home directory. That's with Ubuntu Studio 14.4/Trusty.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1283826] Re: lightdm hangs after updates

2014-07-20 Thread Sam_Ashley
An update.

I had written here that I seemed to be affected by this bug too, but I
remembered later that just before running the Software Updater gui
tool I had enabled the pre-released updates update source. After the
update the system wouldn't boot, and seemed totally hosed. But I had a
backup of the root partition made with fsarchiver and so I was able to
restore it. I did that, then just now tried disabling, then enebling one
at a time, all of the sources and PPAs that I had been using---excpt for
that pre-released updates source. The updates went without a hitch,
and it seems all good. So in my case the bug report was seemingly a
false alarm, and I just wanted to let y'all know.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1283826] Re: lightdm hangs after updates

2014-07-19 Thread Sam_Ashley
I recently installed ubuntu studio 14.4/trusty and though the
installation seemd to go well and the system had been working fine,
yesterday when I ran the gui Software Updater and did a restart when
the updates were done (as it wanted me to do) the computer went through
a welcome screen that says Ubuntu Studio for creative humans etc, then
to a log in where I entered my password, then to a blank screen. The
first time that blank screen had (I'm quite certain) my desktopp image,
but the boot process stopped there. The next times I tried to boot it
got to almost the same stage, but never to the desktop image, instead
there was only a blank white screen (I don't know if it's significant
but rather than pure white it was white with what looked like many
single pixels of a darker color, as if the screen were dirty). Normally
the next thing presented would be a dialog offering that I could select
a session, but it would get stuck before that. In its stuck state the
mouse still worked, with a mouse pointer image moving around on the
screen. I could also do ctl-alt-Fn and get to a console, but to be
honest I didn't know what to do from there.

For unusual reasons I happen to have a backup of the root partition made
with fsarchiver just before I had tried running the Software Updater
and with this I could last night restore the partition to the state it
was in just before the system was hosed. If it would be helpful in
debugging this issue I could for example run Software Updater again
and then mount the presumably hosed system from a copy of Quantal I have
on an external drive, then copy and upload somehow the apt and dpkg logs
(and/or others). I don't know if it's possible for you to contact me
(I'm new to launcpad) but assuming it is, then please let me know if
you'd like me to do this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2014-07-16 Thread Sam_Ashley
I was until recently using ubuntu studio quantal 64 bit (now using
trusty) and I happened to run across this in the apparmor profile for
evince:

# evince creates a temporary stream file like '.goutputstream-XX' in the
# directory a file is saved. This allows that behavior.
owner /**/.goutputstream-* w,

This discovery has I think been reported here before, but in case it's
useful to say, I thought to check my backup drive and discovered that
indeed those goutputstream files were still piling up in ubuntu studio
quantal. For example I have a backup done on 2014-06-18 and there are 3
of those files in my home directory; another backup dated 2014-04-08 has
14.
