[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1687246] Re: GNOME Shell should support fractional (non-integer) Hi-DPI scaling

2018-11-28 Thread SergeiS
I'd like to air some disappointment. Whoever decided that we should be
happy with 100,200,300% options is WRONG. We should have a field to
enter 135 or 150 or 177, whichever works best for the screen size. I'm
not able to use any latest Ubuntu releases on my laptop because of this
decision. I'm currently forced to stay with Xubuntu that allows setting
custom DPI.

  ---

I'm using fully updated Ubuntu GNOME 17.04.

In Ubuntu Gnome, you only allow for integer scaling of things for high
DPI monitors. While in theory this sounds good, on a 27 inch 4k
monitor like mine, restricting it to integers is a problem. 1x is
annoyingly small, and 2x is WAY too big. You need a 1.5x, and
presumably to just allow most noninteger values to future proof the
distribution given 8k monitors and all sorts of new and weird things
coming out, like windows 10 has.

Photos of the two annoying sizes are available here (it won't let me
  attach two files):

  http://i.imgur.com/vWrvZxq.jpg
  http://i.imgur.com/11p19k7.jpg

I apologize for my photography skills in advance., you'll have to look
at the ruler for scale to see the problem. Please contact me if you
  need any more information etc.

  Workaround
  ==
You can enable experimental fractional scaling in Ubuntu 17.10 or 18.04 LTS
by running the following command in a terminal and then restarting your
computer. Note that this is an experimental feature and is not fully supported
by either Ubuntu or GNOME.

  gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-
  framebuffer']"

After restarting your computer, you should find additional scale
options in Settings > Devices > Displays.

If you change your mind and want to get back to supported status, run:

  gsettings reset org.gnome.mutter experimental-features

Still a problem on 14.04 now. What's confusing is that the file system

Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

Bug description:
First time I use an USB drive since I updated to 12.04 and I found a
really annoying bug on Nautilus. Nautilus claims that the destination
drive is read-only when in fact it is not.

  How to reproduce:

  1. Connect a USB stick drive to your competer.
  2. The USB will appear in the desktop.
  3. Open two Nautilus windows one in your home folder, other in the USB stick
drive.
  4. Select any file from your home folder (small enough to fit the free space
in the USB drive)
  5. Drag the file and drop it in the USB drive window.

-- Nautilus will say that it cannot copy the file because the
  destination is read ony --

If you try the copy the same file with the terminal you will see that
the file is copied without problem, other programs like gedit or
LibreOffice can write in the usb stick drive just fine.

It is not a problem with the USB stick, as shown here:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-05-09 Thread SergeiS
I am running Ubuntu 14.04 on bare metal, and yet compiz is eating CPU and
desktop effects are slow IF the cpu loaded with something, even if the load is
niced. I've tried the UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE=1 compiz setting above and it makes no
difference.
I am running stock intel drivers on Haswell c/gpu. Why does it say my hardware
is not supporting Unity? 12.04 had no problems with that.

Title:
Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

Status in Compiz:

Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
It appears that the workload of low-level graphical operations used by
compiz when, for example, moving windows has increased dramatically
between Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04.

This might not be that visible when using high-end gpus, but should be
clearly visible when using compiz on llvmpipe and to some-extent
invalidates the approach of using compiz on top of llvmpipe as a
fallback when no GPU is available:

  How to reproduce:
  1) Use the unity-3d desktop in Ubuntu 14.04 on top of a non-accelerating Xorg
driver like modesetting. Move windows around. Note peak and average cpu-usage.

How to verify compiz is the culprit:
  1) copy /usr/bin/compiz from a Ubuntu 12.04 installation. Drop it in as
/usr/bin/compiz on 14.04. Reboot. Perform the same window movement. CPU-usage
should be substantially lower.

This problem also affects VMs running on VMware ESX with a software-
rendering GPU. Window movement becomes sluggish, which suggests that
even with GPUs, compiz has increased the number of operations required
  to move windows.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1168742] Re: Disks are not unmounted when physical eject button is used

2013-11-14 Thread SergeiS
Confirmed on Ubuntu 13.04 64bit (3.8.0-33-generic).

What a PITA bug, I was backing up my family video dvds using dd command
and noticed that the size of the images is always the same. I eventually
tried playing and iso file and of course some of the chapters weren't
playing.

No workaround yet other than using eject button in Nautilus?

In 13.04, disks (DVDs, CDS) are not unmounted when ejected via the
hardware button on the drive. After ejecting disks via the hardware

menu from the icon on the launcher), however, everything works
  properly.

Just as a note, as per
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#Hardware_Malfunctions, I
attempted to report this using ubuntu-bug storage, however there is
not an option dealing with unmounting devices, and clicking other
tells you that you should run ubuntu-bug again with a specific package
name. In an attempt to get this to a semi-relevant audience, I ended
up just saying that a disk wasn't auto-mounted, clicking through the
next few popups, and ended up here. If this isn't the right place to

I don't have the encrypted swap, only the home directory (the default Ubuntu

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 745836] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in cppu::throwException()

2011-09-18 Thread SergeiS
Bjorn: this is definitely a ecryptfs related issue. The workaround I've
found somewhere is to simply repoint HOME to an unincorporated directory
like:

env HOME=/home/sergei/Unprotected libreoffice -calc

Which is not a fix but something to get by. OO and LO save all state
there from that point, which might be a security risk.

Note to other users, in case you didn't realize,
/home/sergei/Unprotected is a link to a directory outside of my
encrypted home directory. You can make one by:

sudo mkdir /home/Unprotected
sudo chown your_login:your_login /home/Unprotected
ln -s /home/Unprotected ~

  3) What is expected to happen in a KDE Natty in a KDE session with the
KDE integration active or GNOME is a Writer or Calc file untouched for
a long period of time (ex. 1 hour+) is when one tries to edit it, the
  application does not crash.

  4) What happens instead is it crashes. This is highly correlated to
both EcryptfsInUse and resource constrained (Memory CPU 50%)
  environments. Occurs with:

+ Intel drivers, Compiz not enabled, Writer open only bug 745836
+ binary ATI drivers, Compiz enabled, Calc open only bug 799047

  WORKAROUND: Use Gnumeric.

Sorry, not unincorporated, but unencrypted. Spellchecker's playing
smart.
