Title:
pkservice.py crashed with AttributeError in __init__(): 'module'
  object has no attribute 'MainLoop'

Status in HPLIP:
  Fix Committed
Status in hplip package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in hplip source package in Vivid:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
If an HP printer needs HPLIP with HP's proprietary plug-in (firmware
files for printers, proprietary driver code pieces for printing and/or
scanning) the automatically initiated installation of the plug-in
fails and causes crash reports, leading to crash report pop-ups and
non-working printing and scanning functionality. The problem is caused
by the switchover from Python2 to Python3 in Vivid, especially also
that the Python3 executable is named python3 and not python.

If the crash happens shortly before shutdown or reboot the pop-up can
  appear right after log-in.

  [Impact]

All Vivid users who use a printer or multi-function device which needs
HP's proprietary plug-in get crash pop-ups and their devices will not
completely work or not work at all.

  [Test Case]

Connect an HP printer or multi-function device which needs the plug-in
(for which models see this bug report and the numerous duplicates) and
set it up. As soon as the plug-in gets downloaded and installed, crash
reports pop up, and the devices functionality which needs the plug-in
will not work as plug-in installation does not complete.

The proposed package solves the problem.

To test without having an appropriate printer, simply run the command

  hp-plugin

in a terminal window. With the current package it will fail as
mentioned, with the proposed package plug-in installation will
  succeed.

  [Regression Potential]

Very low. The patch is trivial and it affects only users who need the
plug-in. All users of other HP printers or non-HP printers are not
  affected.

  hp-plugin needs /usr/bin/python to point to python3*

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:

Status in hplip package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After upgrading to Vivid, my HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP would not work
anymore, and trying to install the binary driver, as prompted by the
HPLIP utility would fail. After fiddling for a good hour, I realized
that the utility was failing to load the python modules for hplip:

  $ gksu hp-plugin

  [ ... ]

Uncompressing HPLIP 3.15.2 Plugin Self Extracting
Archive...
Error importing HPLIP modules. Is HPLIP installed?

I changed to /usr/bin, and noticed that python was a symlink to
  python2.7; I temporarily made it be a symlink to python3.4, and I
managed to install the proprietary plugin for my printer. However,
other software would crash, so I reverted to have the symlink pointing
  to the old python2.7 location.

Bug description:
The filter hpps crashes (Python Traceback) on a broken pipe on stdout
when the subsequent filter (the hp backend) errors out due to a
network problem (see comment #8). As Linux distributions have
automatic crash handling/reporting systems this causes annoying pop-
ups which irritate the users giving the impression of a more severe
  problem.

To the HPLIP developers at HP: Please check all components for
  possible crashes in error situations.

  Original report:

I have a HP Laserjet pro 200 color MFP M276n which was configured and
working normally. I have it configured both directly with an USB
connection, and through the network with a fixed IP.

Since a recent cups update (I believe), network printing does not work
any more but the USB connection still works. When I try to print
through the network I get a message telling me that the job has been
send, and then I get a crash report. I don't know why apport is not
intercepting the crash report, so I attach it manually here. In the
properties window of the printer I see Idle - Filter failed and in
the printer queue the job is held.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1428356] Re: 03f0:2b17 USB HP LaserJet 1020 printer will not print after boot

2015-04-16 Thread Suma Byrappa
Hello Chris,

As Till pointed out there are still errors with plugin config file and
plugin files are missing.

Please try the below steps once again.

= Run the command hp-uninstall to cleanly uninstall HPLIP. Remove
plug-ins too when prompted.

= Install the latest (or already downloaded 3.15.2 run file)

= Remove all the existing queues by running the command hp-setup -r

= Re-configure the queue by running the command hp-setup. This step
will also prompt for installing the plugin. Follow the prompts to
install the plugins.

= Try printing to the queue named HP_LaserJet_1020

I see in the log files that there is also a filter called foo2zjs is
used. Looks like this is the auto queue configured for the device. But
lets see first if the problem is solved in a cleaned setup.

So I may suggest to backport Utopopic (HPLIP 3.14.6) package to Trusty (HPLIP

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1428356] Re: 03f0:2b17 USB HP LaserJet 1020 printer will not print after boot

2015-04-15 Thread Suma Byrappa
Hello,

It looks like HPLIP is not installed properly, as some hplip config
files are not found as per syslog report.

Please try installing latest Linux driver and reconfiguring the queues.
Given below are the steps to do it.

= Download and install the latest HPLIP release from
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html
(automatic installer) or http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-
web/install/manual/index.html (manual installation, if automatic
installer does not work)

= Reconfigure print queue using below commands.
   = hp-setup -r (remove all print queues)

   = hp-setup

= Try printing

= In case the problem persists, send us the output of running the
command hp-doctor, /var/log/syslog and /var/log/cups/error_log

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1430561] Re: hp-plugin crashes with error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed

2015-04-13 Thread Suma Byrappa
HPLIP plug-in package too works well in both Py2 and Py3 environments.

This problem is seen due to mixed Python environments. HPLIP maintains
/usr/bin/python as the shebang lines; allowing the scripts to run with
whatever is the default python. But in Ubuntu HPLIP packages, shebang is
changed to /usr/bin/python3 which makes scripts to run with Py3. The
python script inside the plugin package holds /usr/bin/python as the
shebang, due to which it runs in Py2 (which is default). The problem
happens as the python script inside plugin package is invoked by a
script which contains /usr/bin/python3 as the shebang (updated in Ubuntu
packages).

Since plug-in package is proprietary, we will provide a solution to this
problem.

Bug description:
  I've already filed a question
  (https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/238002), but I came to
the conclusion it's indeed a bug.

I have a Deskjet 3520 All-in-one and no matter what I do, scans always
arrive with JPEG artifacts. For example, with hp-scan, when I disable
compression, I get the following error message:

error: Unable to set option compression to value None

When running XSane, in the advanced settings menu, I get JPEG as only
compression option. Manually setting the compression to none in the
drc file has no positive effect either. In any case, scans arrive with
  severe JPEG artifacts.

Used hplip version is 3.13.10 on Kubuntu 13.10. I've attached the
  output of hp-check.

Title:
Make HPLIP working with Python 3

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  In Progress
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “hplip” source package in Trusty:
  Confirmed
Status in “hplip” package in Fedora:
  New

Bug description:
In Ubuntu Linux we want to switch over completely to Python 3 and are
on the way to eliminate everything which needs Python 2.

Therefore I want to know whether HPLIP is already tested with Python 3
at HP and whether there was already effort on adapting HPLIP to Python
  3.

As Python 3 will also get standard in the other distros I would
appreciate very much if HPLIP could be switched over to using Python
  3.

And finally, I can strace an hpmud command to see that it fails. (Attached.)

This behavior is consistent with the Fedora bug. It appears like a
broken USB connection, but I've tried two working cables on USB ports
at the back and front of my computer.

Title:
Printer shouldn't be paused after hp CUPS backend failed

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  Confirmed
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: cups

When printing fails for some reason (backend failed message),
printer is paused, and won't resume automatically, even after a
reboot. This is silly because there's no notice about that in the
print dialog nor in the print queue: you have to go to
System-Administration-Printing, and be very clever to understand how
  to re-enable the printer.

In most cases, the fact that something failed doesn't mean other
documents won't print, and generally users will figure the error
better by themselves than with a paused printer.

This is in Lucid, cups 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.3 (not sure it's the same
  behavior in Maverick).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1036236] Re: hpcups and hpijs driver use different rasterization

Title:
hpcups and hpijs driver use different rasterization

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  Confirmed
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
HPLIP provides two drivers for the Laserjet 1515n: hpcups and hpijs:
  - hp-color_laserjet_cp1515n-hpijs-pcl3.ppd
  - hp-color_laserjet_cp1515n-pcl3.ppd

The new hpcups shall replace the old hpijs, however, it produces very
different rasterization results, resulting in a radically different
visual impression. Differences are especially prominent for greyscale
  prints.

Hpcups produces amplitude modulation halftones (dots of different
sizes at fixed locations). When resolution is set to Normal, the
size of these dots is so large that contours cannot be reproduced with
reasonable detail. Heavy aliasing can be easily seen in the circle
contours on the Ubuntu Printer test page. Printing photographs in
greyscale mode yields badly rasterized images like those known from
low-quality newspaper prints (dot pattern is so prominent it dominates
image contours). Artifacts are reduced, but still visible at
  resolution Best.

In contrast, hpijs produces frequency modulation halftones with
stochastic dithering (small-sized dots placed at varying densities).
At resolution Normal, it produces evenly colored areas with
reasonably sharp edges. Circle contours on the Ubuntu Printer test
page appear continuous. Photographs are reproduced at a a much higher
fidelity as with the hpcups driver.

  Questions:
  1. Why do the two drivers use different rasterization?
  2. Why is the result of rasterization so bad in the hpcups driver, set at
resolution Normal, Greyscale?

  Note:
Both drivers produce acceptable color prints with much fewer artifacts
visible, even at resolution Normal.
