[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1574732] Re: Regression: Kernel Update in 16.04 from last days renders nvidia driver unusable

2016-05-07 Thread Tim Gardner
That is the goal. I'm surprised that you didn't get a dialog on upgrade
that requested a decision on secure boot mode. You might if you remove
and reinstall the nVidia driver.

Regression: Kernel Update in 16.04 from last days renders nvidia

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I am running Ubuntu 16.04 since at least four months, always with the
nvidia proprietary drivers (installed from the repository). I used
nvidia-361 for a while with no issues (and i need it for steam
gaming). However, an update installed on my machine yesterday breaks
the nvidia drivers. I tried purging the driver, rebooting and
reinstalling and i tried a newer version for the ubuntu-drivers ppa.
Nothing helps: With the nvidia driver installed, i get a low-
resolution login screen, but cannot login due to missing 3d
acceleration. Running on nouveau works fine.

This seems very strange to since everything worked until this
afternoon. Yesterday, i was happily playing games on steam, installed
some updates and now, my graphics are broken.

Here is a rough example for how to support 3rd party modules in a secure
boot environment. Note that you have to have Xenial linux 4.4.0-22.38 or
better.

Bug description:
At first there was no native recognition of my sound driver (see this [
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1525554 ] a lot of
others a experiencing this problem)
so there was a workaround to fix that, the notebook has sound output now, but
ever since i got these horrible scratching noises while booting, which i dont
have booting windows, which is kinda surprising while one could take it for a
bios or hardware problem.

basic workaround for fixing missing sound driver was adding two lines to the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
  options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
  options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1

with these lines a was able to get sound, but i then have these crazy
  noises while booting.

the following are some lines from the terminal which might help:

  'lsb_release -rd'

  cat /proc/asound/version

even adding the right driver and module into /etc/modules (like snd-
hda-intel model=PCH index=0) did not work, like i found in this thread
  ( https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Soundkarten_konfigurieren/ ) sorry for
  the german thread.

i dont know what to add anymore. feel free to ask.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1355196] Re: compiz fails with intel_do_flush_locked failed: Invalid argument

2014-08-19 Thread Tim Gardner
Scott - the major difference between -6 and -7 is the rebase from
3.16-rc7 to 3.16. Please try installing http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16-rc7-utopic/ as well as
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16-utopic/ in order to
confirm it is isn't an Ubuntu specific bug. Results should also
determine the bisect range.

  Description:Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
  Release:14.04

  Package version: 1:4.2.3~rc3-0ubuntu2 0

Start libreoffice and create a document, fx a text document.
  Save it as foo#hash.odt

  Select File-Save As

The default filename is now foo.
  Expected foo#hash

When uninstalling libreoffice-kde, saving from libreoffice works as
  expected.

This same error occurred for the following package names:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1212261] Re: fglrx-installer should not depend on linux-headers

2013-08-14 Thread Tim Gardner
Having a linux-headers package dependency in Quantal/Raring/Saucy is
benign since there will never be an official LTS kernel installed in
those releases. I do suggest fixing the Saucy version however so that
this problem isn't propagated to 14.04.

  UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Updated raring on March 16th. After update xrandr is detecting a non-
existant VGA display on T500 laptop.

On boot lightdm would display login page at native resolution for laptop

lightdm displays at lower resolution 1024x768

Bug description:
I have a HP LP2475w monitor. Sometimes when the system has put it to
sleep, it fails in bringing it back up again. The screen remains
blank. Even changing virtual terminals with ctrl+alt+f1 does not work.
Ssh'ing in and running 'sudo service lightdm restart' makes it come
  back up again.

This error shows up in dmesg:

[18380.721810] [drm:drm_edid_block_valid] *ERROR* EDID checksum is
  invalid, remainder is 125

This monitor worked flawlessly on my previous computer which had
  NVidia + the binary driver.

Bug description:
I have a Lenove Thinkpad T400 with an external monitor (1680x1050)
  connected.

Switching windows, surfing the web, and using the compiz effect that
streteches windows when moving them against the border cause my system
  to freeze.

I can still move the mouse, however, nothing is clickable at all.

Hoped that todays update to 2.21.0-0ubuntu1 solved, the issue but
froze allready twice in 30 minutes. There is nothing in the logs
  AFAICS.

After upgrade to raring and reboot, I'm seeing frequent Freezes in

ctrl-alt-f1 will work, and I can login there.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is a MASTER bug report, i.e. not a real bug report, but a tool to
  help manage other bug reports.

Most bug reports on i855 are probably due to the CPU/GPU incoherency
problem that is now consolidated upstream at
  http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27187 (which was split off
from a bug report for i845). For now, we mark all automatically
reported GPU lockups on i855 as duplicates of this unless there is a
  reason not to.

A kernel with the proposed fix is available at https://launchpad.net
  /~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-fixes

To use this fixed kernel, run the following commands:

  sudo apt-add-repository ppa:brian-rogers/graphics-fixes
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.35-ppa21+v9patch-generic

There is a similar master bug report for i845 at bug 541492.

Recently this machine stopped suspending when the lid is closed. It
suspends just fine from the menu, but when the lid is closed the

I'm not sure that this is a bug in gnome-settings-daemon, but I've
traced it up the stack far enough to know that the events are coming
out of the kernel and that upower is detecting the lid status changes

I'm clearing the Natty verification tag as I was able to reproduce the
corruption and verify that this patch fixes the symptoms caused by the
reproducer.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 745836] Re: encrypted swap corrupts application stack/heap [was: soffice.bin SIGSEGV cppu::throwException()]

2011-10-09 Thread Tim Gardner
Tyler - this patch fixes the corruption caused by the reproducer in #86
using a 2.6.38 kernel. However, I'm not able to reproduce this using a
2.6.35 kernel. Do you have any advice as to whether this patch is really
applicable on kernels older then 2.6.38 ?
