I just experienced the issue on Ubuntu 15.04, 3.19.0-18, GT650M@346.59.
I the past, I have had these black borders occasionally on several
different computers. They all had nvidia GPUs. The strg+alt+f1/f7 trick
works for me, which it at least much easier than restarting unity (which
somehow also closes the session now, see #1441592).

@townsend: I have this issue on my Macbook Pro Retina 10.1 with Ubuntu 14.04 
using the nvidia card (gt 650m). In many applications, only parts of the screen 
are refreshed and the parts that are not refreshed flicker heavily (seemingly 
between old versions of the screen). This is especially a problem in firefox.
I tried the following fixes before:
- "Force synchronization between X and GLX" in ccsm: no change
- turning off "Allow Flipping" in nvidia-settings: removed the flickering but 
the issue remained otherwise unchanged
- updating to newest nvidia driver (now 337.25): no change

I just tried your patched compiz version and it seems that the issue is
now completely resolved!

  I'm using latest compiz on intrepid.

  Since jockey-gtk does not work on my box (I already filed a bug), I
  manually installed nvidia-glx-177 and added the "driver → nvidia" line
  to xorg.conf.

  Now I seem to be having some screen refresh problems when using
  compiz: parts of the screen are refreshed, but others aren't. That
  means nautilus doesn't show files or folders until I move the cursor
  over them, firefox doesn't show webpages properly until I scroll down,
  and so on.

  Please, tell me if there is any additional info I can provide to find
  out the cause.

Just happened here too. Ubuntu 13.10 on a Macbook Retina accessing a Synology 
NAS. 
Nautilus hung up while browsing a folder on the NAS. After killing and 
restarting nautilus, gvsd-afp-browse stayed at 100% cpu. Ejecting the drive did 
not help. It was not possible anymore to access the NAS, when trying to mount 
it in the network view I got  "Cannot acces [nas_name]: Error sending data: 
broken pipe". After killing gvsd-afp-browse, I was able to access the NAS again 
(I had to reenter the credentials).

Bug description:
  Happens on an irregular basis on 12.04 and I think I've experienced it
  on 11.10.

  For no reason gvfsd-afp starts up. Cooling fan kicks in, system
  becomes laggy. Easily cured using system monitor and killing the
  process. Someone on the Ubuntu Forum asked if I have a Mac on the
  network and the answer is yes, an iMac and there are shares on that
  machine I can access.

  Have experienced this issue on my Acer Aspire 5742 and Compaq Mini 110

Reencountered the same problem again today (again on my MPr 15"). I
_did_ shutdown the computer properly yesterday evening, but I'm pretty
sure that I closed the lid immediatly after clicking on shutdown.

Just had the same problem after a (normal) restart on a Macbook Retina
10,1. Sound wasn't working anymore and  most applications using sound
hung up/waited for a ling time and then crashed (most annoyingly
flashplayer, which caused firfox to hang). After deleting the folder
pulse, sound instantily worked again.
