[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1644598] [NEW] evolution will not start after upgrade

2016-11-24 Thread zak wylde
Public bug reported:

ubuntu 16.10

evolution:  Installed: 3.22.1-0ubuntu2

Upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10 yesterday and now Evolution won't start so
I can't get at my emails except on my phone.

Trying to start it in a terminal gives me:
'
[libprotobuf FATAL google/protobuf/stubs/common.cc:61] This program requires
version 3.0.0 of the Protocol Buffer runtime library, but the installed version
is 2.6.1. Please update your library. If you compiled the program yourself,
make sure that your headers are from the same version of Protocol Buffers as
your link-time library. (Version verification failed in
"/build/libphonenumber-ClRhsc/libphonenumber-7.1.0/cpp/src/phonenumbers/phonemetadata.pb.cc".)

'google::protobuf::FatalException'
  what(): This program requires version 3.0.0 of the Protocol Buffer runtime

'

Does that suggest some conflict issue with the libprotobuf packages(s)?

thx.

@Gunnar - thanks, that seemed to work. At least I can get online now :)

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Since /lib/udev/usb_modeswitch relies on /lib/udev/hotplug.functions
  which has been removed from systemd, usb-modeswitch fails in Yakkety.

  [Test Case]

  Well, it's easiest to test with a USB dongle. My own (gunnarhj) Huawei
  E1750 fails to trigger mobile broadband on Ubuntu 16.10 with usb-
  modeswitch 2.2.5+repack0-1ubuntu1. After having built the package with
  the attached debdiff it works as expected.

  [Regression Potential]

  Low. The proposal mirrors an upstream commit:

  https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/usb-
  modeswitch.git/commit/?id=10a6240885e98b55f512b0a85fb8d44cbaca503e

  The related Debian bug report is at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-

  2.3.0+repack0-1.

Sorry to ask but how do i apply this patch? If this is the issue where
the mobile broadband dongle no longer shows up in the list of available
connections, I have this issue since upgrading to 16.10 from 16.04 as
well).  thx.

2016-09-07 Thread Zak Peirce
While I fully appreciate the work you have taken in this bug report I
do not feel comfortable running with this workaround in production.

If and when this is resolved I will upgrade these nodes back to 16.04.

  belong to hadoop user will be killed ,through debug ,i found the
  /bin/kill in ubuntu16.04 has a bug , it has bug in killing process
  group   .

  Ubuntu version is:

  Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  Release:16.04

  (1)The way to repeat this bug
  It is easy to repeat this bug , run “/bin/kill -15 -12345” or any like
“/bin/kill -15 -1”  in ubuntu16.04  , it will kill all the process .

  (2)Cause analysis
  The code of /bin/kill in ubuntu16.04 come from procps-3.3.10 , when I run
“/bin/kill -15 -1” , it actually send signal 15 to -1 ,

  -1 mean it will kill all the process .

  (3)The bug in procps-3.3.10/skill.c ,I think the code "pid =
  (long)('0' - optopt) " is not right .

  static void __attribute__ ((__noreturn__)) kill_main(int argc, char
**argv)
  {
    case '?':
  if (!isdigit(optopt)) {
  xwarnx(_("invalid argument %c"), optopt);
  kill_usage(stderr);
  } else {
  /* Special case for signal digit negative
   * PIDs */
  pid = (long)('0' - optopt);

  if (kill((pid_t)pid, signo) != 0)
   exitvalue = EXIT_FAILURE;
  exit(exitvalue);
  }
  loop=0;
  }

  (4) the cause
   sometimes when the resource is tight or a hadoop container lost connection
in sometime, the nodemanager will kill this container , it send a signal this
jvm process ,it is a normal behavior for hadoop for hadoop could reexcute this
task. but with kill bug ,it kill all the process belong to a hadoop user .

  (5) The way to workaround
   I  copy /bin/kill in ubuntu14.04 to override /bin/kill in ubuntu16.04, it is
ok in this way   .

This also affects an out of repository Hadoop install.

I found this issue but it did not solve the issue.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/38419078/logouts-while-running-
hadoop-under-ubuntu-16-04

Replacing /bin/kill with the binary from 14.04 LTS solved the issue for
me. I am uncomfortable with the workaround, I will have to revert these
systems to 14.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1459143] Re: Complete system freeze upon switching WiFi networks

2015-08-02 Thread Zak
I also am encountering this bug on my XPS 13 9343. It happens once or
twice a week. I have to force a reboot in order to reconnect to a new
network without crashing.

Title:
  Complete system freeze upon switching WiFi networks

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Occasionally when I am manually switching from one WiFi network to
  another through the Indicator applet, the entire system freezes
  completely—neither the laptop's own keyboard and trackpad nor any USB
  devices produce any effect. The only way to resolve the situation is
  then to force a power down, which has caused me to lose data on
  several occasions.

  This started occurring on Xubuntu 15.04; I have not had any similar
  bugs on previous iterations of Xubuntu or other Ubuntu variants.

  It seems to happen when I am switching from an unsecured to a
  particular WPA-secured WiFi network, though as it happens only once in
  a while (about once every two days or so under moderate computer use)
  I am not sure about the source of the issue. I do know that it seems
  to happen only while switching WiFi networks.

  This is one of two new network-manager bugs that I noticed around the
  same time, immediately after upgrading to 15.04. The other bug was
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
  manager/+bug/1270257.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1402941] Re: Sound stutters when I try to change volume

2014-12-15 Thread Zak Espley
IDK if this is relevant either but before I reported this bug it cause
my computer to freeze. I restarted and went to report the bug. I ran
ubuntu-bug command and selected audio problems. Then it went through
it's thing and I gave me a list of hardware to select. I selected
Internal-Speaker and continued. I then recreated the bug for the bug
report. Continued through the process but I didn't realize I needed to
report it from my browser. So I ended up exiting the new tab by
accident. I forgot about Ctrl+Shift+T and just decided to make a new bug
report.

On my second try I ran the ubuntu-bug command. I selected audio problem
again. But this time, when it popped up with a list of hardware, my
Internal-Speaker wasn't there anymore. I had to select the HD-Audio-
Generic.

So something happened after the error that made it not recognize my
hardware.

I'm pretty sure i found a workaround: turn off gapless playback.
I think it might have to do with library size the one experiencing the problem

Title:
  Banshee randomly crashes while playing songs in Play Queue

Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Frequently when listening to music in my Play Queue Banshee will
  simply crash/close without any sort of notice or message. It always
  happens at the end of a song, but I can go back into it and play the
  two songs again without it crashing (so it's not the songs which are
  triggering it).

  No "Banshee has crashed" messages appear, so I have no way to debug
  this and I am unable to do it on demand.

  Any clues of what I can do to help debug this would be great. This is
  getting really annoying, as I can't sit down and listen to music
  without it crashing occasionally.

I'm pretty sure i found a workaround: turn off gapless playback.
I think it might have to do with library size the one experiencing the problem
had >130K entries
