[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1743489] Re: iwlwifi firmware panic on 4.13, ucode 29.610311.0

2018-08-06 Thread berend
It's very similar to the behaviour described here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=231159

I also have a Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 7260, REV=0x144.

And I'm on Ubuntu 18.04. I think I saw it on Ubuntu 17.10 as well, but
happens reasonably frequent now, every few days.

Same issue: can't sent files from my tablet to my Ubuntu laptop anymore.

slightly different error:

Perhaps this is because my home directory is encrypted, and system
directory is not encrypted?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1511330] Re: PPTP connection does not establish due to error: "Connection activation failed: the VPN service returned invalid configuration."

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 12.04
  Behavior started after the last update from update-manager (which updated
pulseaudio).

  Preconditions:
  Playing video+audio from Hauppauge PVR250 TV capture card, which
intermittently stutters in audio/video delivery (half-second pause)

  Symptoms:
  After a while, the occasional stutter from audio delivery turns into a
2-second repeat - like a scratched audio cd, and pulseaudio starts logging lots
and lots of:

  (3628.790|   0.000) D: [pulseaudio] module-udev-detect.c: /dev/snd/controlC0
is accessible: yes
  (3628.811|   0.021) D: [pulseaudio] module-udev-detect.c: /dev/snd/controlC2
is accessible: yes

  (about 10-100 rows each second) which does not stop.

  I.e - every few minutes, the audio stops and repeats for a couple of
  seconds, and then resumes normal operation, but seems to still be
  stuck in some loop causing above logging.

  Might be alsa-related, because:
  - Restart of pulseaudio does not remedy the problem
  - Stopping pulseaudio and continuing with alsa-only, still produces the
2-second pauses, but with silence instead of repeating audio.

  This behavior was not present before the update.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1016825] Re: Audio gaps and runaway logging after a while

2014-04-25 Thread berend
For what it is worth: steam store video play is broken in both cases
(i.e. when spotify doesn't work, or when it does work). So lots of
stutters there. But different behaviour, not repeats, but continual
stuttering/broken up audio stream. Nothing in syslog for that though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2014-04-20 Thread berend
After upgrading to 14.04 pulseaudio is basically stable for me (same
hardware). Although sometimes, after a reboot it isn't: pulseaudio
starts stuttering, and I need to move the mouse to get playing to
continue. But after power-down and restart the issue is fixed, and the
stuttering is over. There was no need to change any of the settings.

Title:
  periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

Status in PulseAudio sound server:
  Confirmed
Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  When running PulseAudio, if I'm playing music via any source (Exaile, Totem,
  Flash in Firefox or Chromium, VLC, etc.) every few minutes the audio will skip

  happens. dmesg doesn't show anything. Nothing else seems to be affected. It
  doesn't seem to happen regularly.

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch (with pulseaudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15),
  but the same thing happened in 10.04 on the same hardware. Uninstalling the
  PulseAudio packages and going back to ALSA gives me no issues whatsoever,
which
  is how I know the issue is with PulseAudio. I'm using my onboard audio

  ...and it goes on.

  The Underrun! messages alone happened a few times before, but it
  didn't skip.

  I'd like to use PulseAudio, but it's pretty annoying having audio skip all the
  time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1304661] Re: Volume lower/raise using keyboard doesn't work

2014-04-20 Thread berend
I've detected that if I assign the sound buttons different keys, that
this works. So although I can assign play to the Audio play key, this
is not recognised. But if I assign it to Super+F5 for example, then it
works.

Same for sound up/down. Different keys work, just not the audio keys,
although it appears they are recognised.

BTW, I'm using a laptop + an external keyboard (Razer Blackwidow).

Title:
  Always in visible workspace does not work

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I can enable this option, but doesn't do anything, stays in single
  workspace.

  If you go to compiz, general options, and look at desktop size, it
  doesn't show data for vertical virtual size and number of desktops.
  Can set them with the unity tweak tool, but does not show up in
  compiz. Setting these options in compiz won't make them stick.

  So possibly related: i.e. workspaces don't work, therefore this option
  doesn't work.

2014-04-09 Thread berend
nouveau driver exhibits exactly the same corruption, almost worse I
would say. Enabled it with:

  xrandr --output LVDS-1 --panning 3520x1200

so not an nvidia driver bug, but somewhere in Xorg.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1301597] Re: Sound underruns (sounds get repeated) at times

2014-04-02 Thread berend
Good question, I had internet access issues at that time too. Currently
everything is playing perfectly (for an hour), no skips, but I upgraded
all, and rebooted.

Only issue now is the volume up/down buttons don't react.

Given that it is no longer very repeatable at the moment (before it
always happened), and I now perhaps seem to run with:

  extra-arguments = --log-target=syslog --high-priority yes --nice-level
-11 --realtime-scheduling yes --realtime-priority 5

priority can be lowered.

I just did a test with spotify playing + a youtube video in firefox, and
heard only a few very minor stutters I think.

I'll post a comment if the issue comes back.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2013-06-12 Thread berend
Here's my current incantation which seems to work for me:

1. In /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf have a line:

  options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0

2. In /etc/pulse/default.pa I have:

.ifexists module-udev-detect.so
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
.else
### Use the static hardware detection module (for systems that lack udev/hal
support)
load-module module-detect tsched=0
.endif

3. Not sure if relevant, but this a change in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:

default-fragments = 256
default-fragment-size-msec = 4

4. Important, I fire up alsamixer and set Auto-Mute to Disabled.

If one of these steps is missing the problem is bad. With these, the
stuttering is rare.

And no, I won't rant about how playing audio on BeOS was so
unproblematic. And I could even play 16 simultaneous movies as well.

in print-to-file I first have to select a different paper size (any
different paper size), then re-select A4, then I get A4 paper size in
the .pdf. Otherwise I get letter.

2013-05-06 Thread Berend De Schouwer
In firefox 20.0, print to file defaults to letter. If I change this to
A4, the PDF file on disk is still marked as size Letter. So various PDF
readers assume it's Letter.

I can confirm this is not a bug with pulseaudio. When I route the audio
to my wireless audio card, no stutters at all. It's purely related to
the intel hda driver.

Here my two audio cards:

Title:
  Audio gaps and runaway logging after a while

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 12.04
  Behavior started after the last update from update-manager (which updated
pulseaudio).

  Preconditions:
  Playing video+audio from Hauppauge PVR250 TV capture card, which
intermittently stutters in audio/video delivery (half-second pause)

  Symptoms:
  After a while, the occasional stutter from audio delivery turns into a
2-second repeat - like a scratched audio cd, and pulseaudio starts logging lots
and lots of:

  (3628.790|   0.000) D: [pulseaudio] module-udev-detect.c: /dev/snd/controlC0
is accessible: yes
  (3628.811|   0.021) D: [pulseaudio] module-udev-detect.c: /dev/snd/controlC2
is accessible: yes

  (about 10-100 rows each second) which does not stop.

  I.e - every few minutes, the audio stops and repeats for a couple of
  seconds, and then resumes normal operation, but seems to still be
  stuck in some loop causing above logging.

  Might be alsa-related, because:
  - Restart of pulseaudio does not remedy the problem
  - Stopping pulseaudio and continuing with alsa-only, still produces the
2-second pauses, but with silence instead of repeating audio.

  This behavior was not present before the update.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1076315] [NEW] Chromium print to file puts the pdf in the wrong directory

2012-11-08 Thread Berend De Schouwer
Public bug reported:

When printing, and choosing print to file, the .pdf is always
generated in the home directory, and not in the chosen directory.

Print to file lets one choose a directory, however, this is ignored.

This used to work correctly as recently as October. I think this might have
been broken by chromium-browser 22.0.1229.94~r1
61065-0ubuntu1 which came as an update on 17 October. That matches the
timestamps of the .pdf files in my home directory.

** Affects: chromium-browser (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1071288] Re: No multiple monitors

2012-10-29 Thread Berend De Schouwer
I've found a probable cause.

xrandr won't enable LVDS1 unless VGA1 is off. So I have to plug in
VGA1, and then run:

xrandr --output VGA1 --off
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1366x768
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto
xrandr --output VGA1 --primary

I have to turn VGA1 off, then I can turn LVDS1 on, and then VGA1 on.

The xrandr error message is cannot find crtc for output LVDS1

A bit of googling shows that this happens to more people, with different
video cards, on all sorts of versions, with all sorts of Linux
distributions.

Possibly related, possibly off-topic: I make VGA1 the primary display,
because if I don't I can't resize beyond a certain size even though VGA1
is 1920x1080. This may be because VGA1's resolution is higher, and
windows are stuck on LVDS1's size.

Title:
  No multiple monitors

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Gnome-shell usually doesn't run on multiple monitors, even though it's
  configured in SystemSettings - Displays

  usually because once in a blue moon it does. So the hardware
  supports it.

  xrandr lists:
  LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
 1366x768   59.9 +
  VGA1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 477mm
x 268mm
 1920x1080  60.0*+

  (other resolutions cut from the output)

  gdm starts on both monitors. As soon as I log in, LVDS1 goes off.

  I can enable the second monitor in SystemSettings-Displays, and even
  click on keep configuration but it doesn't activate.

  It's disabled in software somewhere. I say that because the message
  tray at the bottom is in a different location when both monitors are
  active. So there is a software detect-monitor-size that moves the
  message tray, and it's almost always where it would be for single
  monitors.

  Worked fine in Gnome-Shell 3.0.0.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1070284] [NEW] Locale is set wrong

2012-10-23 Thread Berend De Schouwer
Public bug reported:

As of today, my locale changed for some unknown reason. I assume a apt
upgrade, but I actually don't know.

It used to be English South Africa (en_ZA), now it's Afrikaans South
Africa (af_ZA) While I understand Afrikaans, and I have 29 locales
installed, I don't understand why it was changed. I also don't know
where to change it back.

I've tried to dpkg reconfigure locales, and checked /etc/default/locale.

/etc/default/locale is set to en_ZA.UTF-8
$LANG is af_ZA.UTF-8 on login
$LC_* is en_US.UTF-8 (which is wrong for en_ZA)
/etc/environment contains no LANG, LC_, etc.

locale:

LANG=af_ZA.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=af:en_US:en
LC_CTYPE=af_ZA.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=af_ZA.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=af_ZA.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NAME=en_US.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

I expect the environment variables of new logins to match
/etc/default/locale. That file is owned by root, readable by everyone,
and unmodified in almost 3 years.

Status in “langpack-locales” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  As of today, my locale changed for some unknown reason. I assume a
  apt upgrade, but I actually don't know.

  It used to be English South Africa (en_ZA), now it's Afrikaans South
  Africa (af_ZA) While I understand Afrikaans, and I have 29 locales
  installed, I don't understand why it was changed. I also don't know
  where to change it back.

  I've tried to dpkg reconfigure locales, and checked
  /etc/default/locale.

  /etc/default/locale is set to en_ZA.UTF-8
  $LANG is af_ZA.UTF-8 on login
  $LC_* is en_US.UTF-8 (which is wrong for en_ZA)
  /etc/environment contains no LANG, LC_, etc.

  locale:

  LANG=af_ZA.UTF-8
  LANGUAGE=af:en_US:en
  LC_CTYPE=af_ZA.UTF-8
  LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_COLLATE=af_ZA.UTF-8
  LC_MONETARY=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_MESSAGES=af_ZA.UTF-8
  LC_PAPER=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_NAME=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_ADDRESS=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_TELEPHONE=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US.UTF-8
  LC_ALL=

  I expect the environment variables of new logins to match
  /etc/default/locale. That file is owned by root, readable by
  everyone, and unmodified in almost 3 years.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Upgrades from 11.10 to 12.04 fail indicating exit status 1 from
installing/upgrading colord.

  [Discussion]
  /var/lib/dpkg/info/colord.postinst does not produce helpful error messages
even if run manually. But the script is trying to run this command:

addgroup --quiet --system scanner

  Running it without the --quiet option reveals the error:

sudo addgroup --system scanner
addgroup: The group `scanner' already exists and is not a system group.
Exiting.

  So there's the problem: the group is already there but is not a system
  group. Taking a look at the group I see:

  $ grep scanner /etc/group
  scanner:x:1001:colord

  Indeed it is not a system group, and it only seems to be used by
  colord.

  [Test Case]
  1.  Install Ubuntu 11.10
  2.  ???
  3.  Upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04

  Expected: Successful upgrade with no errors
  Actual: Upgrade hits this error - package colord 0.1.16-2 failed to
install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script
returned error exit status 1

  [Workaround]
sudo delgroup scanner
sudo apt-get install -f

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 879384] [NEW] Toggle wireless off makes it impossible to toggle back on

2011-10-21 Thread Berend De Schouwer
Public bug reported:

Toggling wireless off (to disconnect) makes it impossible to later
toggle back on.

I have to run rfkill unblock all before I can toggle wireless back on.
Then it comes back.

This is for Gnome3.2, which doesn't allow you to disconnect from a
wireless network: you have to toggle the entire wireless stack off to
disconnect.

$ sudo rfkill list all
0: sony-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
1: sony-bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
4: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Toggling it back on should soft-unblock if toggling it off soft-blocks.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 879384] Re: Toggle wireless off makes it impossible to toggle back on

2011-10-21 Thread Berend De Schouwer
I've found a bunch of other bugs that say that the wireless is blocked
on reboot. That's not the problem here. Wireless works on reboot. It
just stops working (from the GUI) if you ever disconnect from a wireless
network; and you can't get it working again afterwards.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 842141] [NEW] Authentication failed with sip protocol

2011-09-05 Thread berend
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to 11.04 after empathy stopped working (probably after
upgrading to pitivi latest or so). But empathy worked sort of ok on
10.10.

All other protocols are fine.

I'm trying to connect to 2talk.co.nz (which uses Asterisk I believe).
I'm behind a NAT firewall, and run a stun server. Other applications
(Twinkle) can connect fine.

2011-09-05 Thread berend
Problem solved, it appeared I had a non standard version installed:
0.7.0-1~ppa10.10+1

I thought an upgrade would fix that. I removed this, reinstalled, and
got the Natty one, all working now.
