Title:
pulseaudio hangs, prevents login, home as ntfs

Status in PulseAudio sound server:
  Fix Released
Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “pulseaudio” source package in Jaunty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

IMPACT: When pulseaudio can not write into ~/.pulse (either because of
permissions or quota or some other issue), pulseaudio spins
continually attempting to write its state into that directory. This
  can hang the login process.

DEVELOPMENT: A later upstream release included a patch to give up and
fail to start if pulseaudio is unable to write its state into
  ~/.pulse, instead of spinning.

  PATCH: Attached at

(test builds are in ). This simply backports the upstream fix to the release in
  Jaunty.

  INSTRUCTIONS: chmod/chown ~/.pulse to root/root 700, then attempt to
  login.

REGRESSION: This patch is from upstream, and has been tested in later
releases of both PA and Ubuntu.

  Original bug description:

I have my home directory on an ntfs drive. fstab line for the ntfs drive is
  UUID=DA103AC5103AA901 /windowsntfs
defaults,umask=022,uid=1001,gid=1001 0 1

  Log in as user 1001

Login screen disappears, goes to ubuntu brown background, and just waits. Can
still move mouse, but no visual progress on screen (waited several times more
than one minute). Then run
  $ killall pulseaudio
from tty or from ssh from another computer, and then gnome loads, the panel
appears, and everything (except for pulseaudio) works fine

Note that uninstalling pulseaudio (and everything related) lets me log in fine
Note that having my home directory on an ext3 drive works fine (sound works
properly from pulseaudio too).
I also used an empty home folder for testing.

This kind of setup previously worked. On ubuntu hardy and intrepid,
pulseaudio performed fine on a home directory on an ntfs drive. Does
  not work on jaunty

The .xsessions-errors give the following information about pulseaudio
  I: caps.c: Limited capabilities successfully to CAP_SYS_NICE.
  I: caps.c: Dropping root privileges.
  I: caps.c: Limited capabilities successfully to CAP_SYS_NICE.

N: main.c: We are not in group 'pulse-rt', PolicyKit refuse to grant us the

appropriate PolicyKit privileges, or become a member of 'pulse-rt', or increase
the RLIMIT_NICE/RLIMIT_RTPRIO resource limits for this user.
E: core-util.c: Failed to create secure directory: Permission denied
W: lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.
  Terminated

The terminated is where I killed it, and everything else in the
  .xsessions-errors file looks fine

I have tried this setup on two laptops.
  Happy to give more info.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1162466] Re: GDM wont start on Ubuntu GNOME using Gnome3 ppa

2013-03-31 Thread brian baker
I just had this too with a fresh install of ubuntu-gnome, after install and
update and dist-upgrade everything was fine. I then added the gnome3 and
gnome3-staging and ricotz-testing ppa's and no login prompt or anything just a
blue background and a x cursor. tried lightdm and gdm both the same story.
then i thought hmmm graphics issue again with G-S so installed the
nvidia-current and all was working again. :-)

Title:
GDM wont start on Ubuntu GNOME using Gnome3 ppa

Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I tried to upgrade to pre Gnome 3.8 by using the Gnome3 ppa, the
update itself went well but when i restarted the only thing I got was
the blue blinds background with a mouse courser, nothing else, no
  login promt.

I tried hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del which brought up the log out dialog box
and asked if I wanted to log out from GDM-session ? Strange...

I tried pushing the power button once instead which brought up the
shutdown dialog box telling me again I was logged in as GDM ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1040193] Re: Redundant ubuntu-online-accounts and gnome-online-accounts panels using a session other than Unity

2012-10-07 Thread brian baker
it also doesn't allow gnome-contacts to function either!
when you try to add an online account it takes you to online accounts window
and allows you to set up an account i.e. google
after going through the various steps of authentication it just stops! it
should take you back into gnome-contacts but it doesn't.
when you run gnome-contacts through a terminal it shows no errors either!

i also filed this bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679733
cheers

Title:
  Redundant ubuntu-online-accounts and gnome-online-accounts panels
using a session other than Unity

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
To reproduce this, close gnome-control-center and run the following command:
  env XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-control-center

Note that there are two Online Accounts panels: one for ubuntu-online-
accounts and one for gnome-online-accounts. This is very unpleasant.
These two panels claim to do the same thing, but ultimately they have
nothing to do with each other.

To make matters worse, the gnome-online-accounts panel doesn't appear
to do much of anything by default (except probably with Evolution)
since Empathy has been built to use ubuntu-online-accounts — to the
extent that Empathy will open that configuration panel when the user
  chooses Accounts from its menu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 908941] Re: gnome-sushi will not engage

i just purged sushi and reinstalled and still it crashes!

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have installed and reinstalled gnome-sushi several times but it
still will not connect with nautilus -- on other computers it will
preview my media files without problems as soon as I press the space
bar, but on this laptop there is no reaction at all from the spacebar
press on an mp3 (it shows the mp3 music icon, so I'm sure the system
would know what to do with the mime type, and the open menu correctly
  assigns to mpg321)

is there some trick to getting gnome-sushi connected?
