[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1770429] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 No audio from speakers. Headphones working. Surface Pro 3

2019-01-31 Thread brian mullan
more clues related to comment #9

if I run alsamixer I can toggle AUTO-MUTE from ENABLED to DISABLED and the
SOUND SETTINGS
Choose a device for sound output switches between headphones output and Analog
Stereo Output.

I did this 4-5 rapidly and now it seems that the SOUND SETTINGS Choose a
device for sound output now appears to switch back/forth between
headphones and Analog Stereo Out but when I plug in Headphones I hear
audio from both speakers & headphones.

But as a temp workaround this is ok for me since if I use headphones I
can turn off my speakers but if not using headphones (re not plugged
in) my speakers work.

Ubuntu 18.04 No audio from speakers. Headphones working. Surface Pro 3

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I updated my Surface Pro 3 From Ubuntu 17.10 to Ubuntu 18.04 (did a clean
install) and the only audio working was from the headphone jack.
  I tried all these:

  [another
answer](https://askubuntu.com/questions/829520/ubuntu-16-04-no-sound-from-speakers-only-headphones-working)

I went back and tested the live CD and even the live cd has no audio
through the speakers. so this must be related to 18.04. I never had
sound issues before and under windows audio still works correctly.

here is my alsa iformation http://www.alsa-
  project.org/db/?f=8bf135db52610a603014779ef24041a491c8a32d

and here is how I fixed it:

  renaming /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.bk , then rebooting the computer fixed the my speaker sound
  issue.

I then restored line by line in to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, rebooting
between restored lines, until all lines were back and ... it still worked!
so I restored the original /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and rebooted the
computer and everything was still working
so I am not sure what the problem was but is now fixed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1813952] [NEW] Audio Playback problem - Speakers only work if Headphones are also plugged in

2019-01-30 Thread brian mullan
Public bug reported:

pulseaudio v 11.1

$ cat /proc/asound/version

Audio has been working fine until this morning when "some" update
occurred on my Ubuntu desktop system.

I found that I was NOT getting any audio out of my speakers.

I also found in SOUND SETTINGS that for OUTPUT I only had listed:

Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Built-in Audio"
Headphones - Built-in audio

Next, I plugged in my headphones to my Desktop and when I did that:

I started hearing Audio out of my Speakers AND in my Headphones !

AND... in SOUND SETTINGS

Line Out - Built-in Audio appeared !

@John Arnold
There is a really simple workaround till this is fixed.

This worked for me and let me compile xorgxrdp. Not sure what your use
case is but...

step 1

*$ sudo touch /usr/include/X11/fonts/fontutil.h*

This file is owned by *root:root*, with mode *0o644*.

Then edit that file and put the following contents into it:

#ifndef _FONTUTIL_H_#define _FONTUTIL_H_
#include
extern int FontCouldBeTerminal(FontInfoPtr);extern int
CheckFSFormat(fsBitmapFormat, fsBitmapFormatMask, int *, int *,
int *, int *, int *);extern void
FontComputeInfoAccelerators(FontInfoPtr);
extern void GetGlyphs ( FontPtr font, unsigned long count,
unsigned char *chars, FontEncoding fontEncoding,
unsigned long *glyphcount, CharInfoPtr *glyphs );extern
void
QueryGlyphExtents ( FontPtr pFont, CharInfoPtr *charinfo,
unsigned long count, ExtentInfoRec *info
);extern Bool
QueryTextExtents ( FontPtr pFont, unsigned long count,
   unsigned char *chars, ExtentInfoRec *info
);extern Bool
ParseGlyphCachingMode ( char *str );extern void InitGlyphCaching (
void );extern void SetGlyphCachingMode ( int newmode );extern int
add_range ( fsRange *newrange, int *nranges, fsRange **range,
   Bool charset_subset );
#endif /* _FONTUTIL_H_ */

  = = = = = = = = = = =

Save the file and then do your compile/make etc and it should succeed.

Again, this is just a workaround till the bug gets fixed but it works for
me.

fontutil.h is contained in libxfont1-dev package not libxfont-dev
package (version 2.0.1).

I am trying to build xorgxrdp and it fails because fontutil.h is
missing.

In Ubuntu, libxfont1-dev package is required however libxfont1-dev and
libxfont-dev cannot be installed together. This is the problem.

I looked at Debian, too. /usr/include/xorg/dixfont.h in Debian does NOT
include X11/fonts/fontutil.h.

This is the right state.

Package info: Ubuntu 16.04

$  dpkg -la | grep -e xserver-xorg-dev -e libxfont-dev
ii libxfont-dev 1:2.0.1-3~ubuntu16.04.1
amd64X11 font rasterisation library (development headers)
ii xserver-xorg-dev 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583256] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.04 Pulseaudio does not use /etc/pulse/default.pa if ~/.config/pulse/default.pa does not exist

2016-05-18 Thread brian mullan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1583255 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1583255

Public bug reported:

System is Ubuntu 16.04

According to Ubuntu Pulseaudio MAN page:

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/man5/default.pa.5.html

it says...

The PulseAudio sound server interprets a configuration script on
startup, which is mainly used to define the set of modules to load.
When PulseAudio runs in the per-usermodeand
~/.config/pulse/default.pa exists, that file is used. When PulseAudio
runs in the per-user mode and that file doesn't exist,
   /etc/pulse/default.pa is used.

On my system I have put the following into - /etc/pulse/default.pa

load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-ip-
acl=127.0.0.1;10.204.151.0/24

The contents of my ~/.config/pulse/ directory contains NO default.pa
file only the cookie file:

$ ls ~/.config/pulse
cookie

After a reload I issue the command patcl list modules and the "module-
native-protocol-tcp" is NOT listed ?

$ pactl list modules

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1533656] [NEW] user environment diff btwn firefox launched from cli & firefox launched from the menu

2016-01-13 Thread brian mullan
Public bug reported:

Recently I was some implementing some LXC desktop environments and came
across a difference regarding Firefox when started from the CLI or
started from a Menu.

In my use-case I use the Pulseaudio module module-native-protocol-tcp in
the Host to allow the LXC desktops to redirect their sound/audio to the
Host's speakers.

in particular... this is done by adding the following to
/etc/pulse/system.pa & restarting Puluseaudio or rebooting once.

  load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-ip-
acl=127.0.0.1;10.0.3.0/24

Then in each LXC container user's .bashrc I add:

  export PULSE_SERVER=10.0.3.1

Which redirects sound in the LXC container to 10.0.3.1 which is the Host
& the Host's Pulseaudio server.

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav tests that the sound is
directed to the Host Pulseaudio server ok and other apps like VLC work
fine also in the container.

However, I found that only with Firefox (and Chrome) launched from the
Ubuntu menu there was no sound/audio.

If I launched either Firefox or Chrome from the CLI where the User
environment had the PULSE_SERVER=10.0.3.1 then sound worked fine
(youtube for instance).

After digging around I found that launching from the Ubuntu menu doesn't
execute the Firefox binary directly but via a shell script in
/var/lib/firefox/firefox.sh.

If I add: "export PULSE_SERVER=10.0.3.1" to the top of firefox.sh
then Sound DOES work when launching Firefox in an LXC container by
clicking on its icon in the menu.

I decided to file a bug on this because I'd expect that the User
"environment" for Firefox should be the same whether launched from CLI
or from the menu.

Bug description:
  === SRU ===
  Rationale:
Network Manager in wily triggers on newly created interfaces and resets
their network configuration even though it's not supposed to manage them at all.
This breaks LXC and quite possibly libvirt as those provide bridges which
are then completely unconfigured by Network Manager.

  Test case:
   1) Update (or not) network-manager
   2) Restart it
   3) Install lxc
   4) Check that lxcbr0 exists and has an IP configured

  Regression potential:
The change to Network Manager is related to udev handling of new devices,
even though normal operation on a regular desktop machine was tested, it's not
impossible that this may regress handling of some devices.
The fix was cherry-picked directly from upstream, so did go through code
review and has been publicly available for a while.

This fixes a significant regression compared to Ubuntu 15.04 and
looks less risky than the alternative workaround which was uploaded
  earlier.

  === Original report ===
After initial upgrade from Ubuntu 15.04 to Ubuntu 15.10 LXC worked for a
couple days then failed. I found that the lxcbr0 interface no longer existed.

I reported this on the lxc-user alias and about the same time several
others had this happen to them also.

Serge Hallyn requested I open a launchpad bug and post some info but
before I could gather that info the system returned to normal (re
lxcbr0 was back) the next day after the server was booted up again.

note: at least one other person had this happen to them also (lxcbr0
  came back by itself).

Today, I booted this server again and ... again lxcbr0 was missing
where it had been working last night.

Below is all of the Info Serge Hallyn asked me to post.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246929] Re: no audio in KVM virtual machines : cannot select alsa or pa

2013-12-16 Thread brian mullan
Serge

I made the changes in comment #40 and the extra change in comment #42
but after reboot when I started Virt-Manager I immediately got a dialog
box stating:

Unable to connect to libvirt.

Verify that:
 - The 'libvirt-bin' package is installed
 - The 'libvirtd' daemon has been started
 - You are member of the 'libvirtd' group

Reverting those changes out and Virt-Manager works ok and no dialog box.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246929] Re: alsa bug in KVM virtual machines

2013-11-08 Thread brian mullan
Serge you asked...
No, wait. If I specify AC97 audio when setting up the vm in virt-manager (by
specifying customize config before install), I do see the
QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=none in env variable, but kvm is started with -device AC97,...

Can you please re-try specifying AC97 when creating the VM and see if you get
working sound?

I did that before but I just tried it again still no sound from
inside the VM.

post the pulseaudio verbose log in your real machine and check whether kvm is
accessing through alsa-plugin or pulseaudio native api

See attached.

Still no audio heard in VM

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246929] Re: alsa bug in KVM virtual machines

2013-11-04 Thread brian mullan
Raymond..

I am using virt-manager not the cli to create/manage my KVM VM's.

I did check in case QEMU_AUDIO_DRV is supposed to be an environment
variable either in the Host OS or the VM itself so just in case I did
check and there is no ENV present (printenv QEMU_AUDIO_DRV) in either.

I also checked the VM's xml file /etc/libvirt/qemu/vm name.xml and its
not present there.

If its not an environment variable but a setting in some config file ...
where do I look?

Raymond...
Here is some more info. I created a 2nd KVM VM using the same ubuntu 13.10
desktop .ISO and all default virt-manager settings

once the new VM (called test) was created again there was no Audio.

So I checked:

as being logged. see below

I found that the setting of QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=none

This seems like the same problem that was reported as a bug in 2010 in bug ID:

Raymond...

Sorry, not sure what you mean by -- which is alsa source-ID 21 Analog
?

Also... the previous messages are from /var/log/syslog inside the KVM VM
Ubuntu 13.10 running image... not from the Host OS.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246929] Re: alsa bug in KVM virtual machines

2013-11-02 Thread brian mullan
All of this is on a 2nd machine of mine with a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 install on a
new hard disk.
The KVM is the default install.
The KVM VM was created using the default Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop ISO image.

Note that I started with this 2nd machine because my primary Ubuntu
13.10 machine (which was an upgrade from 13.04) was having the same
problems.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246929] Re: alsa bug in KVM virtual machines

2013-11-02 Thread brian mullan
Raymond... pls keep in mind I'm not a developer. I want to help with
this problem but you have to give me end-user understandable questions.

do you mean the emulated hda sound card (QEMU_HDA_ID_DUPLEX) ?
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/virt/kvm/qemu-kvm.git/plain/hw/hda-audio.c

You also asked:
which backend audio are you using ?
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/virt/kvm/qemu-kvm.git/tree/audio
alsa , pulseaudio or sdl

I have Pulseaudio

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1003743] Re: webcam fails w/ubuntu 12.04 works w/Debian 6 - both x64 OS

2012-06-08 Thread brian mullan
NOTE - when I filed these 2 bugs for some reason Launchpad marked them
as Firefox related.

THEY ARE NOT... cheese, uvcview etc all have problems although lately I
have been able to uvcview to capture/display

But regardless, from my searches something with webcam's broke around
11.10 release and continues.

Skype for instance has a work-around being published about using a PRE-
LOAD for the ia386 code.

Again, in my ignorance .. I suspect combo of multi-arch and Unity.

On latest x64 bit Debian it all works... so to a DEV that should also be
a clue as to what changes from there to Ubuntu.

2012-05-24 Thread brian mullan
I have a guess that both are related and possibly a cause of the move to
multi-arch and to Unity.

Multi-arch because it seems they are both affecting x64 users from what
I can see.

And Unity (at least for the webcam problems) because symptoms are less
pronounced if you switch from Unity to Unity 2d or one of the Gnome
options.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 865672] Re: Adobe Flash Player Settings dialogue does not respond to mouse clicks

2012-05-22 Thread brian mullan
One thing I learned experimenting..

If I am on a Ubuntu x64 bit pc and using my browser to connect to a 32 bit web
server and it offers me the flash player
the Flash Player User Settings menu DOES allow me to click on it.

If however I use my browser to connect to a x64 bit web server and it
offers me the Flash Player, the Flash Player User Settings menu does NOT
let me click on any menu options.

  WORKAROUNDS:

  1.

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html#117645

  2. Click on the flash window. Now use the keyboard to tab through the
  settings dialog. Space to select.

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
Adobe flash player is configured on my system to ask before a website sets a
flash cookie, so if a video (eg on youtube) is played, a dialogue box will pop
up asking me whether or not to allow the website to store a cookie on my
machine. However, nothing happens when I click on either 'allow' or 'deny', so
the box stays put and I can't view or control the video playing beneath it.
On this machine I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10; in 11.04 there was a program
for adjusting the flash player settings in the System Settings control panel,
but that program is no longer there and not accessible via the dash, so there
is no obvious way to just configure flash to allow all cookies and avoid the
dialogue box.

  Workaround: using Unity 2D instead

Notice : the problem has been already corrected two years before :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/410407?comments=all
I'll add that it's perhaps because of Compiz : It works with Unity 2d, KDE,
Gnome-Shell, Gnome-Session-With-No-Effect BUT it affects Ubuntu 3D,
Gnome-Session Fallback and Caito-Dock session
