[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1801494] Re: dock missing

2019-05-20 Thread padarjohn
OK, I've attached the requested info from my system. It goes back 4
days, so it should include the period when it stopped working.
Unfortunately I can't tell you exactly when that was - having the dock
autohide means it's pretty much hidden until I need it.

I can get the dock back with alt-f2-r to restart the gnome shell, so I
have a workaround for now. But this is obviously an issue.

This bug hasn't been addressed and is obviously still an issue. Why was
it allowed to expire?

I have a relatively clean 18.04 install, and it's happening to me too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 964270] Re: Ubuntu forgets keyboard shortcuts after a restart

2014-06-27 Thread padarjohn
According to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1063617 this
was fixed 14.04. Any chance of getting the fix in 12.04? This is incredibly
annoying.
I applied updates today and now my shortcuts are gone. I had one for the
terminal that was alt+` (I prefer alt-esc, but that's another problem). My
shortcut doesn't work, and there's a new one with ctrl-alt-t. If I delete both
and add mine back, it works for a few minutes. But then it stops working and
when I check the ctrl-alt-t one is back.

I use Dell XPS 1640. I'm using the latest ubuntu 12 and updated everything as

as when i press ALT + X the music plays/pauses. However, after I restart the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1045899] Re: Maximum number of clients reached

2014-01-06 Thread padarjohn
Yes, it's still a problem (12.04LTS with updates as of Dec 19 '13).

I don't know of any way to reliably/consistently reproduce it. I
encounter it after 1-4 days of normal usage, which would be difficult to
duplicate with a development release. Perhaps one of the other affected
parties can try.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 910539] Re: maximum number of clients reached

2013-11-11 Thread padarjohn
This is looking more and more like a X server resource leak.

I reached this state again after a couple of days (as I usually do) and
tried to capture some information to compare with the clean-state data,
so I closed everything I had open until I had only the clients that I
normally have right after login. Then I started running xwininfo with
different options.

After successfully running xwininfo several times I suddenly got

Maximum number of clients reachedxwininfo: error: unable to open
display :0.0

I literally had not run anything else other than a few shell commands. I
seriously doubt xwininfo is leaking handles. Later, when I'm not doing
real work, I'll try to script something to see if I can create a
failure.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 910539] Re: maximum number of clients reached

2013-10-29 Thread padarjohn
I don't think this is an issue with a hardcoded constant in X, not
unless someone recently made it much smaller. I hadn't seen this problem
at all in 15+ years of using Linux/X, not until upgrading from 10.04LTS
to 12.04LTS.

More likely it's a newly introduced resource leak in X or gnome.

I'm using the nVidia driver.

I hit this yesterday and had to log out/restart X, and I'm already
hitting it again today.

After killing everything except a single terminal and this instance of
Firefox I notice out of 244 root window children over 160 instances of
this sort:

 0xc001b9 (has no name): () 238x196+842+518 +842+518
2 children:
0xc001ba (has no name): () 236x164+1+27 +843+545
0xc001bb (has no name): () 238x196+0+0 +842+518

They're all children of the root window. There are some duplicates, for
instance (ignoring their 2 children):

 0xc01660 (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154
 0xc016b1 (has no name): () 1077x1052+324+118 +324+118
 0xc017ea (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154
 0xc01877 (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154
 0xc018fb (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154
 0xc01947 (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154
 0xc019cc (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154
 0xc01a45 (has no name): () 1077x1052+850+154 +850+154

I used to think it was xscreensaver, but I disabled that. I have no screensaver
process running now. The only strange thing that might be related is a shell
script I run that fires off xplanet every 5 minutes to generate a jpeg and then
calls
  gconftool -t str -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename file.jpg
to update the background image.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240225] [NEW] X server ignoring PreferredMode option

2013-10-15 Thread padarjohn
Public bug reported:

After applying the most recent updates (on 10/13/13) the X server is suddenly
ignoring the PreferredMode option in my xorg.conf file.
My monitor is attached through an 8-port KVM that doesn't pass the monitor
EDID. This means the X server can't determine the monitor capabilities and
defaults to a lowest common denominator, typically 1024x768. Until now I've
successfully used the PreferredMode option to set the mode to values defined
in the xorg.conf file.

After applying updates last weekend the X server is suddenly ignoring
that option. Currently the only way I can get the correct (1920x1200)
screen resolution is by logging in at 1024x768 and running the nVidia
Settings program, which is a PITA because the system crashes about once
a day now (reported seperately). I tried the nVidia tool option to
create a new xorg.conf file. It includes a metamodes option, but it
still doesn't work.

I just realized that this bug got opened under the wrong package. Is
there any way to move/reassign it, or should I just close it and reopen
it?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1045899] Re: Maximum number of clients reached

2013-10-12 Thread padarjohn
This is a serious regression. I never had any problem like this through
all the releases of Ubuntu I've used. This has been a non-stop annoyance
ever since upgrading to 12.04LTS.

Using the Nvidia driver.

After repeatedly using nitrogen to set my background picture, the X11
server ceases to accept new connections.

xlib reports Maximum number of clients reached.

nitrogen does not show up in ps or xlsclients.

  xlsclients reports only 18 clients.

I filed it under xorg because even though nitrogen triggers the
problem, it seems that the actual problem is a resource leak in the
  X11 server.
