[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1986444] Re: network-manager fails to detect usb internet adapter

2022-08-14 Thread sally
I followed some suggestions:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/906636/ethernet-adapter-was-disable-on-ubuntu-17-04/909185#909185
to fix the problem. Specifically, I edited the file:
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf
and changed the line
unmanaged-devices=*,except:type:wifi,except:type:gsm,except:type:cdma
to
unmanaged-devices=*,except:type:ethernet,except:type:wifi,except:type:gsm,except:type:cdma

I also followed the suggestion:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1039233/no-wired-connection-wired-unmanaged-ubuntu-18-04/1043244#1043244
and edited the file: /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and changed the
line
managed=false to managed=true

After sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager and a reboot the problem seems to
be fixed.
Incidentally, there were quite a few problems with the upgrade, and I had to
reinstall the
Ubuntu Desktop to fix some of these. I do not know if the NetworkManager files
were changed or deleted when I did this.

Archlinux already has a driver for Kernel 5.6 via AUR
  (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-340xx/) and Debian SID has
  one for kernel 5.5.

So, the question is: when will we see a new version in repositories?

Bye and have a nice day.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1872950] Re: Nvidia 340.108 fails to install with kernels 5.5 and 5.6

2020-10-23 Thread sally
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 without realizing this problem with the
nvidia-340.108 . The upgrade failed to install this driver with the 5.8
kernel that comes with the upgrade. Fortunately, I still have the 5.4
kernel that is compatible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1400 with legacy GPU
GeForce 8400M GS. I wondered whether there is or will be a fix for the
nvidia driver to make it compatible with the 5.8 kernel in Ubuntu 20.10.
Thank you for your help.

It?? could be the open-weather extension which is causing the error.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849055] Re: gnome-extensions fails to load after boot

2019-10-21 Thread sally
The extensions do load when I enable them.?? The problem is that after a
reboot

they are not enabled and I need to do it by hand. This does not happen
after

every reboot but occurs often enough when I start up the computer that
it's annoying.

Most of the time when I start or restart Ubuntu-19.10 the gnome-extensions that
I have enabled fail to load. I am forced to go each time to gnome-tweaks to
re-enable these extensions which is very
frustrating. This worked fine in Ubuntu 19.04. I am using a Dell Inspiron
1420 laptop. Thank you
for any help with this.

I am having problems with the latest Nvidia drivers. There is overheating and
other instability when I watch you-tube videos so I'm
not sure the problem is with Sudoku.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 969489] Re: lightdm tries (and fails) to start too early?

2013-08-23 Thread sally
I had the opposite problem. By commenting out the line : sleep 5
after the line: post-start script
in /etc/init/lightdm.conf
my lightdm bug is fixed in Ubuntu 13.04

Bug description:
Sometimes lightdm comes up fine. Other times it appears to fail.
x-0.log shows it tried to load 'nv' (rather than 'nvidia' which is
what actually exists). When I then log into console and 'start
lightdm', it comes up fine (on :1).

I've not had it come up ok today, so I don't know if, when it comes up
fine, it starts on :0. No idea if the lightdm.conf needs a change to
'start on'clause, or if this is just a case of a bad shipped config
  file (for module 'nv').

2013-05-04 Thread sally
I purged nvidia and rebooted. The result was the same --- an all purple
page without login.

Title:
Lightdm fails to display login screen

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This problem started after upgrading Ubuntu 12.10 which worked fine to Ubuntu
13.04. After booting, my Dell inspiron 1420 reaches an all purple screen
without login. Ctrl-Alt-F1 gives a purple screen with
blinking cursor and the words starting up Ctrl-Alt-F2 yields a console
terminal where I can access unity with startx. I needed
to update the Nvidia driver to 319 for startx to work.

Title:
  Evolution contact lists broken

Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  https://launchpad.net/~sallybarbera wrote on 2012-01-28 ...

I have been trying to create contact lists on Evolution Mail. I creat
the list, all looks good, try to send an email and I get a message
that there is a problem with an address, re-open the list and it's
changed some of them to whing dings or symbols! Anyone help with this
  problem?

I now have the same problem. Creating a new contacts list ends up
  with gibberish entries, e.g. fred.b...@somewhere.com becomes a
  sequence of 6 or 7 non-printable and non-ascii characters.

This _always_ happens when the address is added by
  1. typing in the box below Type and e-mail address ... and selecting the
matching name from the address book, or
  2. drag-n-drop and existing contact into the contacts list area of the window

  It does _not_ happen when
  3. the address typed into the box below Type and e-mail address ... does
_not_ match an existing contact, or
  4. when the address is selected using the [Select..] button and the resulting
Show Contacts pop-up and selector

  My Evolution version is 3.2.2

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation

2011-11-25 Thread sally-ann barbera
HI. Sorry I am not only a newbie to Ubuntu but I don't understand any of what
you're saying, not being a techo of any description. Does this mean that I can
install something to make this dvd work, or not? if so what, and how do I find
it and if not then I guess I just have to play it on the telly!
Thanks

  10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 11.10

  1. Install Ubuntu.
  2. Insert a standard movie DVD.

  What happens:
  * In Ubuntu 10.10 and earlier, An error occurred - Could not read from
resource.
  * In Ubuntu 11.10, An error occurred - Could not read DVD. This may be
because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed.

Without libdvdcss2, Totem, VLC, and others are unable to play my
original DVD-s. I know it's illegal to ship Ubuntu with libdvdcss2,
but it could be in multiverse repos, and totem's plugin installer
could install it, OR add the medibuntu repo to the list (but leave
unchecked), then Totem's plugin installer should give a hint, to use
that repo's libdvdcss2 to play your DVDs. Newbies wont find out how to
solve this problem by theirself, go back to win, and then it will be
harder to solve the bug #1 :)

  Not to be confused with:
  * bug 502426, where DVDs don't play when libdvdcss is installed
  * bug 745515, An error occured location not found while trying to play a DVD
  * bug 747433, Totem cannot play this type of media DVD because it does not
have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from this disc

  -
  Desired solution:

When a user tries to play a dvd, a dialogue should pop up displaying
  the following message:

The DVD you have inserted cann't currently be played because the
supporting software has not been installed. This is because it is not
legal for Ubuntu to distribute this software in some countries. If you
are certain that it is legal for you to install this software in your
country, you can install it now. Would you like to install it now?

  yes install now no thanks
