[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1875015] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 and Displaylink is extremely slow

2021-03-08 Thread svenmeier
On my system this problem shows up when I enable fractional-scaling
(which I have to, to be able to use different scaling for my notebook's
3k display and my external monitor).

As soon as I close my notebook's lid or disable fractional-scaling,
performance on the external monitor is back to normal.

Status in X.Org X server:

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Using ubuntu 20.04 on displaylink docking with external monitor is
totally slow, unusable. The GUI responds very slow, if you click, the
command of the click goes on after about 3 seconds... if you type, all
the letters are with the same lag, so it is totally unusable.

Was using displaylink without any problem on 19.10 until yesterday, when I
upgraded to 20.04.
  It is terrific.

If i plug out the usb for the displaylink docking station, than the
speed is back, and the system is ok, if I connect it to the docking
station again, everything extremely slow again.

Please investigate this asap, as it is unusable on displaylink docking
  stations.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1021375] Re: Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

Title:
Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

Status in Nautilus:
  Confirmed
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
First time I use an USB drive since I updated to 12.04 and I found a
really annoying bug on Nautilus. Nautilus claims that the destination
drive is read-only when in fact it is not.

  How to reproduce:

  1. Connect a USB stick drive to your competer.
  2. The USB will appear in the desktop.
  3. Open two Nautilus windows one in your home folder, other in the USB stick
drive.
  4. Select any file from your home folder (small enough to fit the free space
in the USB drive)
  5. Drag the file and drop it in the USB drive window.

-- Nautilus will say that it cannot copy the file because the
  destination is read ony --

If you try the copy the same file with the terminal you will see that
the file is copied without problem, other programs like gedit or
LibreOffice can write in the usb stick drive just fine.

It is not a problem with the USB stick, as shown here:

The permisions on the removable drive are set correctly:

There is enough free space in the drive:

  /dev/sdb11,9G 681M 1,2G 36% /media/DESIGNPLUS

A file can be copied to the USB stick using the cp command for
  example.

  sergio@shana:~/Trash$ cp wireless.txt /media/DESIGNPLUS
  sergio@shana:~/Trash$ cd /media/DESIGNPLUS
  sergio@shana:/media/DESIGNPLUS$ ls -lah

  -rw-r--r-- 1 sergio sergio 73 jul 5 10:38 wireless.txt

But nautilus just dennies to copy the file claming that the
destination is read only, when it is not.

I tested it with two different USB sticks in two different computers
running Ubuntu 12.04 and the same result.

After switching back into Gnome session touchpad movement works again.
Thus I suspect this to be a Gnome problem.

Title:
Xorg freezes on simultaneous touchscreen and mouse input

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Whenever I operate a mouse and simultaneously use the touchscreen, the whole
user interface freezes:
  - no mouse operation possible
  - no keyboard operation
  - video playback halts
  - fan goes up

The duration of this freeze seems to be related to the amount of
input, I'm generating simultaneously with the touchscreen and the
  mouse.

  After a few seconds:
  - mouse operates normally again
  - all missing keyboard input is showing up immediately wherever I had the
focus
  - video skips the frozen seconds and continues
  - fan returns to normal operation

It doesn't matter whether I use a bluetooth mouse or the touchpad.
Note that this does not happen when simultaneously operating mouse and
  touchpad.

It seems to me that xorg is running into some kind of loop, possibly
trying to make sense of contradictory input from mouse/touchpad and
  touchscreen.

Yes, this is an unlikely situation, but it happens most of the time
when someone else is trying to show me something on the screen and
accidentally touches it, while I'm doing something with the mouse.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1509711] Re: Screen temporarily not locked when coming out of suspend

2016-01-15 Thread svenmeier
The problem does no longer show up with kernel 4.4.0.

@hjwp2: perhaps you could try out the mainline kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-wily/ too?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1514694] Re: whitespace missing after print pdf

2015-11-09 Thread svenmeier
Copying the text from the original document: "Martin ritt durch Schnee und
eisigen Wind."
In the output the whitespace is missing between the words and the text becomes
"MartinrittdurchSchneeundeisigenWind."

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1481171] [NEW] thunderbird zombie process

2015-08-03 Thread svenmeier
Public bug reported:

Every other week I can no longer start thunderbird, because another instance is
already running (although no application window is listed in gnome-shell). The
following error is shown:
Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window,
you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system.

Forever whatever reason gnome-shell keeps a reference to the thunderbird
child process:

sandra@sandraOrange:~$ ps -A | grep thunderbird
 1550 ?00:00:07 thunderbird defunct
sandra@sandraOrange:~$ cat /proc/1550/status | grep -i ppid

smooth now.

Title:
  Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using Gnome Ubuntu 14.10, Dell XPS 13, intel 915 Graphics

After upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10 there are a lot of places where
the graphics are working much slower than they were before:

  - Gnome Shell Interface is very sluggish, visible chops (redrawing)
  when pressing the [Super] key.

  - Selecting text in Gedit takes a full second pr. line

Experiences some subjective improvement when I booted kernel 3.13.0-37
instead of 3.16.0-23, but that may be my imagination as the problem
  persists.

I've searched google, forums, found a couple of relevant links that
point to the issue being the Intel drivers.

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/53962...E2%86%92-14-10
  http://www.webupd8.org/2014/10/ubunt...ent-1652086424

But the drivers currently in 14.10 should be newer than those supplied
by Intel to 14.04 so that doesn't make sense to me. As one Intel
  developer wrote:

I would like to point out that since what we do is bring more ecent
versions of the software to the target distributions than they ship
with, a 14.04 targeted installer is unlikely to bring much to a 14.10
installation, which most likely has the same or more recent versions
  already anyway.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

2015-01-29 Thread svenmeier
I don't understand how this bug can be 'invalid', when it perfectly describes
the symptoms on my fresh Ubuntu 14.10 installation.
It's discouraging to see that all commenters' effort to help identifing the
cause of the problem is dismissed with 'this is not a me-too bug'.

@Timo Can you reopen #1385764 please, it cannot be a duplicate of an
'invalid' bug.

Blacklisting intel_rapl and intel_powerclamp didn't help here :/.

2015-01-19 Thread svenmeier
I did a fresh install on an empty system without downloads (no internet
connection) and without restricted-extras.

Live-CD Gnome was fast as usual, rebooting into the installed system
left me with a slow desktop.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

2015-01-19 Thread svenmeier
Just tried once again with Ubuntu 14.10 live-CD on a usb stick and Gnome
was fast as always.

After I suspend my notebook and logging in after 10 to 20 minutes, this

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 874834] Re: No audio in firefox.

2011-11-06 Thread svenmeier
So it seems I'm the one to apologize. I'll look for a bug report
(possibly creating one) which is more related to my problem, i.e. flash
has no sound.

Thanks.

  (1) Do you get sound in other applications, or do you have no sound at

Only browsers and OpenShot Video editor have no sound on output.

  (2) Are you using Firefox, or some other browser?

  Firefox and Chromium

  (3) Does the problem occur in another web browser? (If you are using
Firefox, you could try Chromium, which you can get by installing the

  All other browsers.

  (4) Does the problem occur in another user account? If you only have one
user account, you can create a second one for testing purposes.

  Both user accounts
