  But some other devs seems to blame an atk-bridge:

  And some others suggest a dbus/gdbus race; the good thing is that
  seems not disturbing that much the system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1317046] [NEW] Extensive flicker on NVIDIA since yesterday's update

2014-05-07 Thread teledyn
Public bug reported:

I did an apt-get upgrade yesterday and rebooted, and since then my
desktop windows flicker on changes enough to make the system difficult
to use. For example, pop-ups on chrome will flicker between two spots
over and over and continue to flicker so long as I am typing (happening
right now on each keystroke typing here, fragments of a Chrome plugin
notification will alternate positions on each keystroke).

Also in chrome, changing tabs will cause the previous and next tab to
flicker alternating rapidly for a moment before the new selection is
set. This effect happens changing any windows so it isn't peculiar to
Chrome. I noticed also that on rebooting after the upgrade, the
settings for my two monitor display had been reset to the defaults.

Prior to the update, the window manager was working fine.

2013-11-01 Thread teledyn
on the problem machine 192.168.10.7, I used the Printer Properties to
send Print Test Page to the HL2270DW printer on 192.168.10.3, and
captured the printout on the 10.3 machine -- the printout is attached,
and unzipped it begins with

%-12345X@PJL
@PJL JOB NAME=Brother HL-XXX
@PJL SET RAS1200MODE = OFF
@PJL SET RESOLUTION = 600
@PJL SET ECONOMODE = OFF
@PJL SET SOURCETRAY = TRAY1
@PJL SET MEDIATYPE = REGULAR
@PJL SET ORIENTATION = PORTRAIT
@PJL SET PAPER = LETTER
@PJL SET PAGEPROTECT = AUTO

and when I cupsctl to enable the printer, again, the printer hiccups
like it is about to print, but nothing comes out, and if I use lpr on
10.3 the file also does not print.

corrupted driver files perhaps? purge and re-install?

Bug description:
  After upgrading to 13.10, I am able to print to one network printer,
  but not to the other; both are Brother printers, the MFC-j6510DW
  prints fine, but the Brother HL2270DW for CUPS goes through all the
  motions, it even causes the printer to click once as if it is about to
  print, but nothing comes out.

  Other machines on the network, including one that was also upgraded to
  13.10, are able to print to this device, and if I print to file, and
  then use ssh to cat the contents of the PDF to lpr on the printer
  machine (running 13.04) I can print. But test pages and evince are
  unable to print directly.

  The MFC-j6510DW printer is on it's own, connected via wifi, but the
  HL2270DW is connected to another LAN machine via USB, but this does
  not appear to bother any other machines on the LAN.

  In the Cups access.log on the printer host, the logs appear fine:

  and on the sending machine, the print queue says sending and then
  the print queue is empty. So all indications are that the document
  should print, but nothing comes out of the machine. If I use lpr
  file.pdf on this machine, I still see the same Cups access log entries
  on the printer host, and the printer still clicks as if to print.

  I am using hl2270dwlpr-2.1.0-1.i386.deb and
  cupswrapperHL2270DW-2.0.4-2.i386.deb downloaded from Brother's
  website, but here again, these drives will produce a PDF file that can
  be printed from any other machine, and the other 13.10 machine is also

I should have tried that first -- and a curious thing, as soon as I
deleted the old printer entry, the unprinted test page printed. I did
an aptitude purge of both the cupswrapper and the hl2270dwlpr and then
reinstalled, and now it prints!!

yay!

I love happy endings.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2013-04-26 Thread teledyn
It isn't just VLC reading DVD images, but also Audacious, EasyTag and
SoundConverter reading mp3 dirs, ImageMagick reading image dirs, Kino
building a video clip collection, Emacs opening src dirs ...

Really it is the whole paradigm of modern data-driven (not 80's era app
driven) workflow

Dare we consider a Unity-native browser that is a fork of Nautilus 3.4?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1130505] [NEW] module-combine-sink causes daemon to crash

2013-02-19 Thread teledyn
Public bug reported:

upgrading to ubuntu 12.10 breaks the module-combine-sink feature of
pulseaudio -- the old module-combine that was removed in the newer
editions is still referenced by the paprefs program that would normally
set the combined output feature of pulseaudio; various sources give
recipies for configuring module-sink-combine instead, for example
throughthe gconf-edit setting of the system/pulseaudio/modules, however
enabling the module-combine-sink will cause the pulseaudio daemon to
abort.

documents on pulseaudio module-combine-sink are very out of date; the
instructions reference the old oss sound drivers! I did try configuring
for alsa devices hw:1,0 and hw:0,0 (as seen in the attached config
files) but these were not recognized in the sound control app attached
to the volume status bar icon or in the pulse audio volume control

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1090111] Re: HDMI reports resolution mismatch on changing users

2013-01-06 Thread teledyn
well THAT was disasterous: having nvidia drivers, it is poison to upgrade!
:(

The system is now largely unusable: I've had to remove all the fglrx
drivers because they cause unity and other apps to crash (there appears to
be no open-GL support anymore) and now, rebooting into the open source
drivers, the desktop image on the HDMI monitor is considerably larger than
the screen, so the menus and status bar are now beyond the view, regardless
of the resolution! -- the many fglrx bug reports suggest this issue won't
be solvable any time soon

my 7 year old son looked at it and said, Welcome to 2013! :(

just in case my report didn't include this before, I am running
NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2) which worked quite well
in 11.04

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1090111] [NEW] HDMI reports resolution mismatch on changing users

2012-12-13 Thread teledyn
Public bug reported:

I may need some help gathering necessary information for this as I am
not sure what component will be affected, I'm only guessing it is nvidea
as that is the video module loaded.

symptom: on changing users, only sometimes, the HDMI connected screen
goes blank and the monitor hardware reports a resolution mismatch.
Restarting X does not fix the problem, the only solution I've found is a
hardware reboot. The monitor itself only has one resolution so it
cannot be adjusted.

this is a new problem, only since upgrading to 11.10 and persists in
12.04.1

it does have line out, so I guess that's my strategy then; I'll contact
that list. This computer has been happily running Ubuntu for a long
long time, so it's my guess they've changed something specifically in
the 11.10 release version

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1087905] Re: no audio output device with ens1371

2012-12-08 Thread teledyn
I haven't the faintest clue how to use module-combine-sink instead of
module-combine, but perhaps the pulse list can help with that.

I'm not sure how this diagram tells me anything useful about
module-combine-sync or how to not use it. it is fascinating, but I'm not
following the advice here, sorry.

2012-12-08 Thread teledyn
there is no mono speaker in the box, but that doesn't mean there circuitry
isn't there, only that dell hasn't hooked it to anything. there is a
line-out in addition to the speaker-out

how do I obtain the pulseaudio verbose log?

2012-12-08 Thread teledyn
I'll take your word for it ;) I see also, listed in the Output Devices, for
the admin account (other user accounts still cannot see ANY devices) I have

LFE on Separate Mono Output/ No Amplifier
LFE on Separate Mono Output / Amplifier
Headphones / No Amplifier
Headphones / Amplifier

and I have my Analog Output B-Link USB Audio device; running paprefs no
longer adds the device that binds the output together under one pseudo
device. Under Ubuntu 11.04 I don't recall seeing those LFE entries, just
the line-out and headphone.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1087905] Re: no audio output device with ens1371

2012-12-08 Thread teledyn
just for the record: I switched from Unity-2D to LXDE and with it had to
switch to using the pavucontrol to set up my sound devices: the unified
paprefs device appeard in the pavucontrol lists, and when set the system
behaves as it did under Unity in 11.04, the same sound is now heard on both
channels.

So I am left with the issue of why the admin is able to use the sound and
not the other users, even though all of them are in the audio /etc/group

fwiw, the pavucontrol did show volume controls of the mono speaker and a
switch for mono mix; I turned both on and turned the volume full blast but
heard nothing coming out of the box. It's my guess Dell just didn't bother
to put a speaker on it ;)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1087905] Re: no audio output device with ens1371

2012-12-07 Thread teledyn
ok, situation solved I think: I did a cold reboot, shut it down, let it
sit for a few minutes, then restarted the machine, and voila, I have
sound -- so this was, as they say, stray capacitance (ie, wtf I dunno)

sorry, seems to be a false alarm, although I did learn alot about
debugging alsa ;)

  when using evince in dual-view (two pages visible) is there any way to

2012-01-25 Thread teledyn
Public bug reported:

The player is going along fine, stepping through the play list, and then
the playback on a subsequent track does not begin, the toolbar icon is
still in play-mode, but the progress needle does not move and the track
does not play; other apps are able to play sound (using aoss for
example); even if I select other tracks that have recently been played
(to show that it is not the fault of the mp3 itself) the player will not
play them. The only solution is to exit the program and start it up
again.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 921610] Re: playback halts, refuses to play subsequent tracks

2012-01-25 Thread teledyn
this may be some sort of sound conflict with xchat notifications (using
aoss) as I noticed in lsof | grep snd that xchat was using the sound system
and once it was removed and rhythmbox restarted, the sound returned. So
it's some sort of blocking that's going on between the two.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 908941] Re: gnome-sushi will not engage

2012-01-04 Thread teledyn
I am not seeing any .xsession-error action when I press the space bar
hovering on an mp3

sushi from the command line gives

$ sushi

 (sushi-start:22206): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter:
 Unable to find suitable fbconfig for the GLX context: Unable to find
 fbconfig with rgba visual

 **

 Cogl:ERROR:./cogl-xlib.c:67:cogl_xlib_set_display_EXP: assertion failed:
 (_cogl_xlib_display == NULL)

 /usr/bin/sushi: line 15: 22206 Aborted
 /usr/lib/gnome-sushi/sushi-start

does this mean sushi requires a 3D graphics support that my old laptop is
lacking?

 Thank you for your bug report, could you add your .xsession-errors
 (copied when you get the issue) to the bug? does it work if you run it
 by hand on a command line?
