[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1333627] Re: update broke fonts in firefox
By the way, the file 30-metric-aliases.conf breaks font selection on all web pages containing font selectors like this: font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; in the case where Helvetica is NOT installed, while Arial IS installed. In css the font names are prioritized, and if the first isn't installed, the second should be chosen, and so on. So the web page should display in Arial, instead it displays in Nimbus Sans L. Because when the browser requests helvetica from fontconfig it should be denied and try the next option (Arial), instead it gets Nimbus Sans L and never gets to test for Arial. This problem exists in several browsers. I'm not sure whose responsibility this is, browser or fontconfig. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to fontconfig in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1333627 Title: update broke fonts in firefox Status in “fontconfig” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I have Ubuntu Studio 14.04. The updates window popped up and asked me to install updates. Which I did. This somehow broke my font configuration. So that I have blurry fonts in firefox. No other application is affected. I have modified nothing in /etc/fonts/conf.avail. If updates changes the contents of /etc/fonts/conf.d I do not see the purpose of having a conf.avail/conf.d - organization. The purpose must be to let users link or unlink files in conf.d to files in conf.avail. I don't expect updates to create links in /etc/fonts/conf.d that were previously created at installation time or upgrate time. I already resolved this issue by deleting the links, as described above. I downgraded to 2.11.0-0ubuntu4, and nothing wrong happened. Then I upgraded, and still nothing wrong happened. So there must have been another package update that caused this. I don't know what other package would mess around in /etc/fonts/conf.d. In the BIOS, the Nvidia GTX750 was selected as default, for some reason, Ubuntu is not following this. Once I disabled the onboard card, everything worked as expected! This could be a headache for a lot of people, and I think it could be solved easily with an option of what video card is to be used (this would be done at the same place nomodeset is done, but not have to press any key to bring it up), or to be able to detect BIOS settings. ** Package changed: ubuntu => fontconfig (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to fontconfig in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1333627 Title: update broke fonts in firefox Status in “fontconfig” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have Ubuntu Studio 14.04. So if I unlink something in /etc/fonts/conf.d I expect it to stay that way. Changes to the files themselves should go in /etc/fonts/conf.avail. Changes to which files are available by default in /etc/fonts/conf.d should be applied only when they are CHANGES. ** Package changed: ubuntu => gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/884717 Title: Asus UL30A backlight malfunction on screen off/wakeup Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: On UL30A Bios 212 in Oneiric Ocelot the backlight turns off as expected, but on resume the backup does not come up again, until the laptop has finished a (sw)suspend and wakeup cycle. After that the backlight works again until it blacks out again on predefinied timeout. (see additional information) This bug is definitely reproducible. Switching the backlight brightness level from the console using sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=ff works well. It may be a scripting issue. additional information: While the screen is switched off and backlight is off, no key or key combination will help but FN+F1 (sleep). The same applies for a lid close, if configured. Neither setting FN+F5, nor FN+F6 nor FN+F7 nor FN+F8 nor FN+Space will switch the backlight on again. If you use an external light, you can see shadows of the screen content, so it is definitely a backlight issue. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 864855] Re: Mushy/blurry/jagged fonts in software center
How would I know whether I'm testing the correct branch? I was linked to here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed and did as it told. I now have 5.0.2 installed. Matthew McGowan, what exactly is it that you are saying about the fonts? Can you not see on the screenshot that the text "View" (in the menu) and the text "Games" (in the window) have the same pixel size (8 pixels high) but have different gamma correction? I know it _should_ be rendered as other gtk labels, but it _isn't_. That's what this bug is about. I made a gtk label in Glade and pasted a screenshot of it right next to the offending text in the software. To me, it's very obvious that the text is wrong, even though the size is the same. It is definetely not because of the small font. Even if I select a smaller UI font, fonts in other applications only get smaller - they don't get uglier. I don't understand what you mean by saying the text is intended to be small compared to the default font - it's not. The text I circled seems to have normal font size. However, the categories pane on the left, has a smaller font. Which I also dislike. I selected "Ubuntu 9" for the UI font because _that's the font I'd like to be used for UI_. I don't see any good reason to disregard the user's preferences. ** Attachment added: "software-center.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/software-center/+bug/864855/+attachment/2561649/+files/software-center.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to software-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/864855 Title: Mushy/blurry/jagged fonts in software center Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in “software-center” source package in Oneiric: Fix Committed Bug description: Some of the font rendering in software center is horrible.
