[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1751147] Re: nvidia-304 kernel module failed to build with new bionic kernel [error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_timer’; did you mean ‘init_timers’?]

What I meant to say is only nvidia-304 and in the next kernel 15 update,
that fix that is listed above will NOT work anymore. Since this is
nvidia's legacy were out of luck.

Title:
  ACPI PCC Probe Failed

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am running upgrade full version of Ubuntu 15.04 from 14.10 on a Dell
XPS-12 laptop. A few months ago, I joined a Linux user group who
helped me rid my laptop of a blue screen Microsoft Windows 8.1
Operating system and install Ubuntu 14.10. This laptop has a cinnamon
desktop GUI. I have been told that I must put up with the Dell HDD
password dialog box on startups before I can start to enter my Ubuntu
login prompt screen. The initial boot up message of ACPI PCC Probe
failed occurs prior to my Dell HDD password dialog box logon password
window. I will be happy to help you any way I can. I know how to
access The Terminal and can do some basic navigation. However, I'm
not too thrilled about my Linux user group's low level of involvement
with Newbies. I wish I could get the level of training I received
many years ago sitting in a classroom learning to use the Apple
computer. Back in 2002, I took an introductory Red Hat Linux 6.5
2-day course at Kennesaw State University and loved it! Wish that
level of live classroom computer training was in place with Ubuntu!
Anyway, I'll help any way I can. This laptop is for learning, and if
further issues occur, I can always use my other Windows 7 Professional
Dell XPS 9100 Tower to communicate with you if necessary.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2014-02-16 Thread vmc
This makes no sense. Daniel is ask to start a new bug of the same old issue,
that in turn will be marked duplicate of this one.
In stead of bifurcating all the duplicates, wouldn't it make more sense to
combined them?

This problem will very well be nvidia or nouveau issue. This problem of
freezing has been around after ubuntu 12.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2014-01-01 Thread vmc
It started crashing again. Both using gnome-control-center Dash.
I researched the IOMMU=soft, and that hack is iffy at best. As described here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168555

Using nvidia drivers doesn't freeze, but the user experience is choppy or
sluggish.
I don't have a second computer setup so the ssh option in the
DebuggingSystemCrash is not a viable solution.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: computer freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-12-31 Thread vmc
christopher.m.penalver Post# 17:

I just now saw your request and have installed the latest Ubuntu 14.04
dated today, 12/31/2014

First I needed to install:
sudo apt-get install python-apport

Then I ran:

apport-collect 1242767

The apport finished without incident. I needed to boot using nomodeset ,
otherwise the screen would freeze
as soon as I started the debugging procedure.

Waiting for further instructions.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-12-31 Thread vmc
penalvch,
I don't have IOMMU in my BIOS, but according to this link:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-bugs/2010-September.txt

I added it to my linux string.

Also, the freeze happens not just using Systems Settings, but also at
unknow times. Usually some sort of graphics usage. Also using the Dash
at times will freeze.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-12-31 Thread vmc
penalvch,

I just tried using the added IOMMU to my linux string as per the link above:
iommu=soft swiotlb=131072

Of course with nomodeset it never fails. I then remove nomodeset but
kept iommu=soft swiotlb=131072, and it never fails ( or hasn't yet).

Apparently newer boards have the IOMMU on the BIOS, my Narra6 does not.

Can the current nouveau compensate for the lack of no hardware IOMMU?

What exactly does this prove?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1181902] Re: Nouveau driver glitch on Ubuntu 13.04 will cause system to freeze under certain conditions

2013-12-21 Thread vmc
Actually using Kubuntu. All I have to do is use nomodeset on first boot
after install. After that it boots normally without it.

This nouveau bug is present on 14.04 testing, on each daily install.

Title:
Nouveau driver glitch on Ubuntu 13.04 will cause system to freeze
  under certain conditions

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

This only happens to Ubuntu 13.04, as my GeForce 6150SE card was
working fine for Ubuntu 12.10. The Nouveau driver glitch will cause my
whole system to freeze under certain conditions.

I first get my system freeze when starting virtualbox, which is
installed from the offical Oracle virtualbox PPA. Duplicated several
times -- Freshly boot into X, then start virtualbox from within xterm
via virtualbox , 2 seconds later my whole system freeze up.

Google search indicated that it might be cause by the offical Oracle
virtualbox PPA, so I followed the advice to switch to the offical
Ubuntu virtualbox from the software center, but get into system freeze
doing exactly the same thing. Duplicated several times as well.

I was about to conclude that it is the virtualbox's problem when I
suddenly remember that I've got into such system freeze before doing
something entirely different, because the symptom is exactly the same.
So I tried again -- startx -- :1 to get me into another X session,
  and quit.

Yes, then and there, I get into such system freeze again. The symptom
is that the display turned black, then a random pattern tiled across
  the whole screen.

Installing the closed source additional driver (nvidia) to replace the
Nouveau driver solve the problem, which in turn proved that my
suspicion was right -- it *is* the Nouveau driver that is causing the
  problem.

  Thanks

  PS.

Comparing with the previous Xorg.1.log, the lines that didn't get
  output are:

(II) NOUVEAU(0): EDID vendor ACR, prod id 426
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Using EDID range info for horizontal sync
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Using EDID range info for vertical refresh
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
   . . .

The whole unloading part (filtered by sed 's/\[[^]]*]//') of my
previous Xorg.1.log is at http://paste.debian.net/5260/, the whole un-
  filtered file is at http://paste.debian.net/5261/.

This behavior may be from the new GTK+ 3.10 tht is present in Trusty,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1239010] Re: gnome-settings activation freezes computer

2013-10-11 Thread vmc
After further analysis I believe the problem is in the integrated video:
nvidia 6150se nforce 430.

This problem occurs both using Ubuntu 13.10 Unity and Ubuntu-gnome 13.10

When I installed nvidia-304 proprietary program it doesn't happen.

So the bottom line is nouveau is the problem area and needs attention.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232940] Re: appearing color bar instead of unity and panel

2013-10-07 Thread vmc
I just installed today's ubuntu saucy ISO [ saucy-desktop-amd64.iso
07-Oct-2013 07:48], which still had the color rainbow on the launcher
and panels.

After it was installed I ran all current updates which included mesa.
Now everything is fixed.

This also fixed gnome saucy which had some unusual display behaviors as
well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1181902] Re: Nouveau driver glitch on Ubuntu 13.04 will cause system to freeze under certain conditions

2013-09-18 Thread vmc
This happens on both Ubuntu 13.10 Unity, and Ubuntu GNOME. It use to
happen on Kubuntu, but the .config settings have solved it. No more
gliches on Kubuntu 13.10 at all.

With Ubuntu 13.10 Unity, the Launcher and Panel are rainbow colored
and completely cover up Launcher Panels. The background is normal. The
Launcher flashes for a breif second so I see the icons, but then the
rainbow color covers it up.

With Ubuntu 13.10 GNOME, it is random when it freezes. I can ALWAYS
cause it to freeze if I start Empathy. Various programs can cause it to
freeze but not always. Empathy will always freeze the computer, and
cause the screen to have unrecognizable virtical lines. A power off is
the only option, That elephant nonsense doesn't work here.

I know its the GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics that's causing this,
because if I use nomodeset nothing freezes.
With Kubuntu, when it first started freezing, I could use modeset=0 and it
would work.

Here is my GeForce 6150SE card:

  $ lspci | grep VGA
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE
nForce 430] (rev a2)
